Jesper’s had a lot of sex. There’s no denying it, and if asked he’d just shrug and agree. He’s not ashamed about it, he likes people and bodies and making those people feel good. He’s had great sex, average sex and everything in between, but it’s extremely rare that he’s had sex like this-

“Stop laughing!” Wylan says, still laughing himself and pressing a hand against his lips in an attempt to stifle it.

“You stop laughing!” Jesper grins, another helpless bubble of laughter escaping him, because he and Wylan have, inexplicably, got the giggles for no other reason than they’re a little tipsy from the cheap wine Jesper pilfered from behind the Crow Club’s bar. Drunk on love, a voice in Jesper’s head croons, sounding suspiciously like Nina.

Wylan rolls them over then, pushing Jesper down against the pillows with a smirk. The movement causes Jesper’s fingers to slip from where they’d been pressed inside Wylan’s body, but it’s hard to mind when Wylan is straddling his hips and reaching for the bottle of oil that’s travelled halfway down the bed.

“You’re so beautiful, Wy,” Jesper murmurs appreciatively, suddenly serious when faced with the reality of his boyfriend sinking down onto his cock. He sits up, his arms snaking around Wylan’s waist to steady him.

“Shut up,” Wylan mumbles, resting his forehead against Jesper’s. “Kiss me instead.”

Jesper grins, the easy humour from earlier reigniting. “Bossy.”

His chest heaved, and his hands were limp but the back part that fell back against his clothes stung so bad tears fell from the contact. “Perhaps now we'll rethink rebellion, hm, Fahey?” “Fuck,” he panted and managed to open one eye, though he didn't have the energy to lift it to look at Anax. “You.” “Ayden-” “I'm sorry,” he winced, closing his eyes as his clothes scraped against the back of his hand again. “For-Forget it. I didn't say anything.” “So many ways to teach, Jinx.” Jinx laughed and stepped over Jesper’s pathetic form. Jesper had enough cohesive thought to think to himself that the Barrel before the Dregs hadn't been rock bottom: This was. This was the place people went to lose their dignity and sense of being before they died. The door squealed as Anax and Jinx stepped out of it, and Ayden paused to kneel next to Jesper. He murmured unevenly, “I'm sorry, Jesper.” “Yeah,” Jesper said without tone, and turned his head away, trying to catch his breath. There was a burning sensation in his neck. Ayden swallowed thickly and stood, scurrying out. The door came closed with a clang and Jinx locked it. Jesper dimly heard: “Don't cry for a bad influence, Ayden.” “I just don't like hurting people, Akuh.” “I know. You're a good boy. But it was for the best, I promise. Would I lie to you?” “No,” he mumbled, followed by a sniffle. “Come on, I have a few sweets stored in my quarters. Split them with me?” He didn't hear any response, but he did hear them climbing the ladder back onto the main deck. Jesper winced again, gasping a few times in an attempt to stop panting like a dog. Everything hurt but it felt like his hands were still on fire and were simply beyond damage. He was afraid to look, assuming he could even manoeuvre his body in a way that would allow him to. “Still my fault, Mart?” He managed, his voice cracking half way through “fault”. Mart's voice was shaky as well. Jesper vaguely remembered Mart mentioning his abilities included sensing other people's pain. Jesper would’ve felt bad, but he was positive the stimulation didn't compare. “Nothing warrants torture, Jesper. I would not even torture those men.” He stopped, then added, “But I would kill them.” Jesper's weak laugh was a choke and then a cough which only agitated his burnt skin more against his shirt and chains.

Liam Mairi 🤝 Matthias Helvar: big tall blonde blue eyed strong soft-spoken gentleman who is supposed to protect a woman of a different / “enemy” culture who has magic powers, loyal to a fault and dies in the last 100 pages of the book for kinda no reason. and I love them both 😭❤️‍🩹

I literally ran out of the color of tabs I was using to mark Nina x Matthias moments I love them so much and I love the way they love. enemies to lovers done right!!! he’s obsessed with her but he’s trying so hard to be respectful like he was raised to be / his culture states. had he lived, he’d be a wife-guy 100%.

I was rooting for Jesper and Wylan this whole time and I’m glad that they get to be together while Mr. Van Eck is rotting in prison 😌

Kaz and Inej however… they made me mad lowkey but also I get it. Kaz just can’t do the committed relationship thing no matter how badly he wants it. but him finding her parents and getting her the ship and paying off her indenture was 🥺. I shed a single tear.

but a solid 4.5/5⭐️ for me! I really liked it and finished it in 2 days (it helped that I read it stuck at a boring job where I can’t be on my phone lol)

I think a thing I really like in my top reads is a solid gang (second squad, the crows, the dreamers) and this definitely had that. but Iron Flame remains my #1 book of the year thus far (out of 8. I’m very far behind on my 52-book goal lmao)

I enjoy every second Aleksander has a scene. I especially like it even more when his true colors show. He’s ruthless. Callous. And I’d watch a whole fucking series just about him the last few centuries. Or when he was serving the King before he created the fold.

🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?

Found family! And especially the integration of born family into a found family— I’m specifically, of course, thinking about the crows with Marya and Colm, and maybe even Alys, Adam and their little baby. Outlining the wedding fic, and reading over the bits I have outlined/written for the rest of the engagement series makes me feel COMPROMISED for this reason.

But! It also applies to other fandoms! I love the little ways that Nicky and Joe hold onto and remember their families, and how Joe “introduces” them to Nile in In Loving Memory. It’s also throughout things I outlined but never wrote. In my 2O2G, back in the day, I had a whole plot line for Nile’s family figuring out that she’s alive, and how they become integrated into the guard in their own ways— overjoyed by Nile’s miracle and willing to take the time they are given… oh man. Emotions. I wish I had had the brain/time to write it then, and that I had the brain/time to pick it up again. But not right now. Maybe someday ❤️

No matter how I feel about the actual execution of my writing, which is so hit and miss, my writing always has so much heart. It’s character driven, and emotional, and I can make readers feel those emotions, too. I’m good at describing feeling and making people feel things as a result. And that’s half the battle, I guess.

🧠 Pick a character, and I'll tell you my favorite headcanon for them.

Wylan 🥹 my sweet boy 🥹🥹 one of my most beloved headcanons for him is throughout the engagement series, and even becomes a pretty big plot point— when he and Jesper marry, they hyphenate their names to Hendriks-Fahey, as a statement of their partnership/love, but also to erase Jan’s influence and help solidify Marya back in the world that she was ostracised from. I think it was @wylanslcve (I think?? I’m gonna dig the post out of my likes and link it, I’ll correct if I’m wrong ((EDIT! I WAS RIGHT. ITS HERE!)) who posted an analysis today about how important his mom and protecting and carving out a place for her is to Wylan throughout Crooked Kingdom. That’s something I’ve always felt really strongly too, it’s central to his motivations.

And it’s also petty and fun for Wylan to be essentially telling his dad “not only am I going to run the business better than any Van Eck before me, I’m not even going to keep your name. You have no claim to me as part of your legacy, your name will die with you.”

Chapter 44: Jesper

Jesper has no idea that Nina altered Wylan to look like Kuwei

Kuwei seemed friendly enough, but his Kerch was rough, and he didn’t seem to like to talk much. Sometimes he’d just appear on deck at night and stand silently beside Jesper, staring out at the waves. It was a little unnerving.

Cry laughing because he doesn’t know it’s actually Wylan—

Only Inej wanted to chat with anyone, and that was because she seemed to have developed a consuming interest in all things nautical. She spent most of her time with Specht and Rotty, learning knots and how to rig sails.

I had forgotten this small detail

She’s already reaching to act on her new dream

What’s that Tangled quote? “Go. Live your dream”

And then Kaz is Flynn saying he will and wanting to be buried in piles of money “Not you. Your dream stinks-”

Jesper worried about Nina, but thinking about her made him feel guilty. When they’d boarded the schooner and Kuwei explained parem, a tiny voice inside him said he should offer to take the drug as well. Even though he was a Fabrikator without training, maybe he could have helped to draw the parem out of Nina’s system and set her free. But that was a hero’s voice, and Jesper had long since stopped thinking he had the makings of a hero.

Woah poor Jesper 🥺

But even if he had helped then he’d be the one suffering withdrawals…

“Does the Council know the scientist is dead?”

“I put it all in my note to Van Eck,” Kaz said. “I told him Bo Yul-Bayur is dead, but that his son is alive and was working on jurda parem for the Fjerdans.”

“…Did he haggle?”

“Not in the note. He expressed his ‘deep concern’, but didn’t mention anything about price. We did our job. We’ll see if he tries to bargain us down when we get to Vellgeluk.”

“Repairs,” said Kaz.

The island was less than a mile wide, a barren patch of sand and rock distinguished only by the wrecked foundation of an old tower used by the Council of Tides.Smugglers called it Vellgeluk, ‘good luck’

“No mourners,” Rotty said, settling down to wait with the longboat.

“No funerals,” they replied.

So it’s definitely a Dregs thing and not just a Crows thing

Two men lugged a heavy trunk between them, staggering slightly with its weight.

“So that’s what thirty million kruge looks like,” said Kaz.

Jesper gave a low whistle. “Hopefully, the longboat won’t sink.”

Imagine they pulled off that whole heist just to drown because their reward weighed too much….

I’m having lots of thoughts so I’ll just include this scene and butt in when necessary

Van Eck smiled. “I will confess I am surprised, Mister Brekker. Surprised but delighted.”

“You didn’t think we’d succeed.”

“Let’s say I thought you were a longshot.”

“Is that why you hedged your bets?”

“Ah, so you’ve spoken to Pekka Rollins.”

“He’s quite a talker when you get him in the right frame of mind,” said Kaz, and Jesper remembered the blood on Kaz’s shirt at the prison. “He said you contracted him and the Dime Lions to go after Yul-Bayur for the Merchant Council as well.”

With a niggle of unease, Jesper wondered what else Rollins might have told Kaz.

Huh… this is kind of an odd thought

I’m pretty sure Jesper didn’t realize he had outed their location when they first were leaving for the heist so he shouldn’t be feeling guilty for that right?

Or am I just remembering wrong…

Either way, Jesper is definitely a little afraid of Kaz

Which is kind of sad but also fair

Any sane person should be a little afraid of Kaz Brekker

Van Eck shrugged. “It was best to be safe.”

“And why should you care if a bunch of canal rats blow each other to bits in pursuit of a prize?”

“We knew the odds of either team succeeding were small. As a gambler, I hope you can understand.”

But Jesper had never thought of Kaz as a gambler.

Matthias paced the small hideout that he was sharing with the Crows. It had been three days since Nina had gone out to do something for Kaz--he didn't deem anyone else important enough with any information on what, exactly, Nina was doing.

Before she had left, Matthias had almost given her well wishes. Almost.

Instead, he had opened his mouth, intending to tell her to be safe, but Jesper had cut him off, and Nina replied with some quip before disappearing out the door.

Now, all Matthias could think about was how his last words to her weren't anything important. In fact, he couldn't even remember what his last words were to her.

What if something had happened? She could take care of herself--he knew that well enough--but she wasn't a fighter, not like the rest of the Crows. Not like he was. And here he paced, stuck in this cramp hideout, unable to be out with her.

"You're pacing is making me nervous," Jesper said from his seat on a stool.

"Everything makes you nervous," Inej shot back with a smile, indicating that she didn't mean it. Even if it was true; Jesper's gambling addiction made him jumpy when he was sitting and doing nothing.

Matthias ignored them both; he just kept up his pacing, waiting for the moment Nina came back to him.

When had he started caring so much? Sure, they had kept each other alive, saved each other multiple times. But when had she gotten this far underneath his skin?

The door opened and Matthias whipped his face towards the sound, his legs finally stilling for the first time in three days.

And there she was.

Nina's cheeks were red and she was panting as if she had sprinted there. Her hair--which was in an elegant up-do three days ago--had started to break free, half of her locks cascading down her shoulder. Her clothes had some rips and tears in them, but there was no sign of injury.

Before she could say anything, though, Matthias was on her, kissing those plump lips with a fervor that surprised even him. She let out the softest sound of shock before kissing him back with a smile, free hand threading in his hair.

"Hello to you, too," she murmured as he broke away for air.

Matthias didn't know where to start. "It's been days--I didn't know if--and you look so--"

Nina disentangled herself from his embrace, tossing the key to Inej before turning to face Matthias once more. "I look so what? Disheveled?"

"Tired?" Jesper offered.

"Out of breath?" Inej chimed in.

"Beautiful," Matthias corrected. "You look so beautiful."

Nina's fiery eyes softened at that, and she leaned in to give him another kiss. The look of adoration on Matthias's face took her breath away, and the feel of his lips on hers was something she would never get tired of.

"Oi--go find somewhere else!" Jesper said, shielding his eyes childishly.

"Do you know how many times I've seen you kissing Wylan?" Nina shot back, making Inej giggle.

And just like that, the moment was over. But Matthias's heart beat in time with Nina's.

Like they've clearly practiced it. Did they spend an afternoon coordinating stunts and establishing hand signals? Did they get it immediately or did Kaz need a few tries to get the hang of doing it smoothly? Was Jesper standing to the side calling out unhelpful advice? I need answers.

They're called Crow Company. Jordie and Kaz went to training and met Jesper there but Jesper dropped out from gambling debt and Kaz went on without him. Eventually Jesper went back and they brought him back into Crow Company, Kaz's new Company he was commanding.

Kaz was sent to Britain after Jordie died and his leg was broken, and Inej was his resident nurse. She was with him in his darkest moments, and Inej had recently been rescued from a trafficking ring that got discovered and shut down by soldiers. She was sent back home and fought to be a nurse until finally they relented and gave her the job because she had the medical experience. They meet at their lowest, so their bond is really strong before they even get feelings for each other.

Wylan and Matthias get really close because they're found and taken in (mostly Jesper's fault) and so they get pretty close. Wylan starts to work with Matthias because Matthias is good at opening things and breaking things so Wylan asks him for help a lot. Of course Kaz is like "you shouldn't be talking to the prisoners" and Wylan is like "this one is fine" and Kaz is like "🙄" because he doesn't trust the enemy at all because they took his brother away, it's hard for him to care that Matthias isn't even German.

Nina and Jesper get really close because Jesper will punch anyone who comments on Nina being a "girl" in a derogatory sense right in the nose. Nina bandages him up right after this and they make fun of the annoying new privates together. Jesper eventually comes out to her and she's ofc very supportive and tells him she likes men and women like him (because obviously they didn't really understand what bisexual was) and so these two have amazing solidarity.
