i think the last adventurer webtoon is starting to get translated in japanese because a lot of japanese maplers on twitter started posting about it
and lol, they're all taking the piss out of it or complaining about how the webtoon is maplestory in name only
i still don't understand what the mindset behind the webtoon was. every other promotional webtoon nexon's done for maplestory has actually been about maplestory, so why was this one just a generic "returner" story with maplestory terminology stapled on? did they really just pay the author to write something about maplestory and gave no instructions nor checked what he was putting out???

Grace & Jin: New Fishing Buddy
Tumblr media
Note: Seokjin, Happy Birthday! I hope your birthday in the military is just as special as it would be if you were here. Let's make your 2024 birthday even more special. To readers, I hope you enjoy it.
Grace had it all planned, near enough.
She had gone out and bought a little box, added some shredded green tissue paper and then filled it with what she needed. It was hard to do everything in secret when you belonged to BTS and Dispatch wanted to follow your every move, nevermind there needed to be a bodyguard with you or one of the boys wanted to follow.
This was something she had to do on her own, without anyone else knowing.
There was a feeling of being completely unsure of whether this was a good thing. The news she had kept secret for the past week had made her stomach churn every moment of the day and she was slowly starting to run out of excuses, with so many eyes on her from the team, stylists and her boyfriend.
Yoongi had commented that she had been looking paler than usual and for Yoongi to notice, that meant everyone else was noticing.
How do you keep a baby secret?
You simply can’t. Not in the industry that demanded 110% from you now with all military service completed and dusted, the boys rested and now they were rearing to go. Let’s not even mention the massive comeback that Big Hit had planned now that BTS was finally back to eight members.
A baby would throw a complete spanner in the works.
But they had wanted this even if it was a complete and utter surprise.
There were so many conversations before the military and afterwards about children. They weren’t getting any younger, their careers weren’t slowing down and the demand for BTS was even stronger so when could Kim Seokjin & Chu Grace actually be a couple and have the family they always wanted?
It seemed life had said ‘screw it. You’re going to be pregnant now.’
Grace let out a long breath and pressed a hand to her stomach, feeling the nausea swell with nerves that had nothing to do with morning sickness. Jin would be due home at any point now after his schedules for the day had been finished with and she knew he had left HYBE because of the message he had sent her.
The two had finally moved into an apartment of their own, a week after Grace had finished her tour. Jin had been on the hunt since his military discharge to find somewhere just for the two of them to own, that hadn’t been their own separate spaces, with enough bedrooms for future family members and for visitors. An apartment, split over two floors, with enough bathrooms and five bedrooms had appeared on the market at their old dorm location in Hannam on the Hill.
The apartment was a complete mishmash of the two with Seokjin’s MapleStory characters displayed on a shelf in the hallway, with Grace’s love of British things displayed in the kitchen and living room. The bedrooms had been decorated neutrally but each with its own little theme though Jungkook had taken one room as his own.
And now one of those spare rooms could be the nursery.
Min-Ji, the cat the two had adopted, had taken to lounging in his brand-new cat tree where he lorded it up over everyone. But even he had sensed what was coming and what changes were due to come along, hiding himself away in one of the spare bedrooms.
Grace left the box on the dining room table and went to the kitchen to get started on dinner, cooking a traditional British dinner of fish and chips.
She tried not to freeze when she heard the chime of the lock on the door, the door gently shut, shoes kicked off and then placed on the shoe rack and a coat being hung up. There was the usual sigh of ‘Finally, I’m home’ and the usual greeting of:
“Jagiya, I’m home!”
She hid her grin and carried on making dinner, “Just in the kitchen. Something arrived for you today, I’ve left it on the dining room table.”
“I didn’t order anything,” Seokjin mused as he changed direction by spinning on his left foot and making his way over.
There was a plain white box on the table with a green ribbon wrapped around it with his name on a little tag. It wasn’t his birthday since it was the middle of summer, it wasn’t Grace’s birthday since that had been and gone and it wasn’t their anniversary either. He hadn’t ordered anything though he had seen a nice painting of Jeju Island online that he knew he had to get for their bedroom.
“Hmm,” he hummed as he pulled open the ribbon and then lifted the lid of the box.
There was a mini fishing rod, way too small for an adult but just small enough for a child. Underneath it, he pulled out a baby onesie which read ‘NEW FISHING BUDDY - ARRIVES APRIL’ and while he was still trying to process that, he spotted the sonogram picture below with Grace’s name on it, her date of birth and where it had been taken.
Seokjin was smart.
He graduated from a very hard to get into university and he had earned his degree while being a member of BTS. Not only that, he had completed his military career with top marks and learned traditional Korean alcohol, as well as design levels and games for MapleStory, was the King of Run!BTS and other things.
Yet his brain had completely shut down over what he was seeing in the box.
It could only mean one thing.
“Grace,” Seokjin started as he carried the onesie and sonogram towards the kitchen.
He never called her that, often referring to her as Chu or her other nickname of Gigi or now Jagiya. Never did he call her Grace and that’s when she turned, trying to hide the built up emotions of nerves, worry, excitement and the big need to shout the news.
“Yes, Seokjin?”
“Does this mean what I think it means?”
“Depends. What do you think it means?”
“You’re pregnant.”
It wasn’t a question, more of a statement. There was no hesitation around it and it was just a matter of fact that every single thing he had seen up to know that made him question a couple of things had confirmed what he already knew.
His girlfriend of over six years was pregnant with his future child.
“I’m pregnant,” she confirmed.
There was a pause and for a brief moment of time, Grace thought that this was going to go downhill suddenly. But all of a sudden, Seokjin let out the biggest yelp she had ever heard and the next thing she knew, her face was pressed against his chest while he screamed, “I’m going to be a father!”
Finally, after months of wanting and waiting and wondering, the dream of extending the Kim/Chu household was about to become a reality.
His fingers smoothed away the tears of relief from her cheeks and he pressed a kiss to her forehead, holding her there until he moved away to hold up his fist. An old tradition of theirs when they both confirmed what they were both feeling.
“Bangtan baby?” he asked, giving his famous wink.
Grace laughed and nodded, holding up her own fist and giving his a bump. “Bangtan baby.”

ABC ask game
F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
UHH so for a bit of context i was like. HEAVILY multifandom until about 2015 which is when my brain switched completely to hyperfixation mode... iirc i was into maplestory for 2015-2019 and then dragalia for 2020-2024 but i would somewhat say i'm still in the drgl fandom so maybe it's that... about 4-5 years then?? i feel like my ship hyperfixations tend to last 1-2 years on average tho and then i get punched in the gut by another hyperfix. so it goes
K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
(panicking because i'm realizing most of my favourite characters have very minimal/implicitly implied development arcs that i can't possibly call well written) well one that i think about constantly and i wish we saw something more similar with is ren hakuryuu from magi... people who have read magi will understand my taste instantly when i say i like hakuryuu i think 😭 i like... can't be satisfied with most tragic/vengeful prince stories after seeing hakuryuu go apeshitt i think more hero-aligned characters should be allowed that in canon </3
M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.
i actually thought about this one as i reblogged the ask game!!! i will choose. chilchuck dunmeshi. because i know he would be such a hater but i also respect someone who doesn't want to rush into relationships (platonic or otherwise) like just from experience it's usually harder for me to get along with friendly people 😭 but also i rarely ever look at a character and think i'd wanna be their friend idk maybe there's someone better suited that i missed
thanks for the ask!!

Im watching a video on mmos and i wanted to talk about my experiences with the genre for the past like 2 decades
I first got into mmos with toontown back when it was all over tv
My parents paid for an account for me and my sibling to share and my dad had his own account
I played a whole bunch of toontown but i avoided a lot of things....i was barely in double digits....stuff like cog buildings and the factory (back when there was like...1) scared me...heck i still tend to avoid them when i go back to ttr (and bc i have zero social skills so i suffer in solo)
My first TRUE mmo was maplestory....i never got far tho i leveled up a few times and got to like the elf area and had someone try to trade me but again i was just a confused 11 year old at the time....idk how mmos work! I still played them!
Theres a bunch of mmos id get into during middle school and into hs but never for too long....i was like a grandma with a cell phone....idk what im doing im just hitting things and running around the first area
I have a friend who id play some of these with back then but even then i didnt know what i was doing
At this point in my life and its only been 28 years of being alive....most of these memories are fuzzy...
I remember always being magic classes until i got one with a gunner...i thought wow thats cool!
My friend always did way more in these games than i did....
And then there was one particular mmo....i had gotten into with a different friend in hs....
Tera
Now my first jump into tera was short lived (in 2013) bc i had a laptop not made to play such a demanding game and i barely saw past lumbertown for years. I shelved tera and had a small burst of playing mmos during this time from new to old
For....whatever reason i dont remember
My previous friend got me to hop back into tera in 2015
And that
Was the start of my true mmo years
Every other mmo i clueless played barely getting anywhere for a few months to playing talesrunner a few times to whatever mmo i wanted to try that gave me a virus once and i very shakily saved my computer from it (probably)
Didnt matter
Here we are back in tera 2 years later and its all different and would only get more different the more i played....i deleted the like 3 characters i had barely used bc their names were trash and i made a new archer named deed
And we had a blast (and i had a third friend join us for some time but we dont talk about him anymore ok ok)
I dont remember how or when
But i had found an mmo coming soon with a closed beta upcoming
Blade and soul
My first time playing blade and soul.....was awful
I was on yet another laptop that could not handle the game....i gave up at the first world boss area bc i had worn the pvp outfit not knowing it was a pvp outfit (whoops) and was basically stun locked into death by strangers bc my poor computer was too slow to handle it
Despite that i bought the founders pack and walked back into the earthern realm with my blade dancer magmia
Who i promptly disgarded to play with my friend on iksnanun
And seeliewood was born
And the rest they say
Is mostly recorded on this blog for your viewing pleasure
Blade and soul to this day is still one of the best experiences ive had in an mmo despite it all despite the games jank despite it taking me months to actually DO non story content bc i had new friends who dragged me with them besides doing the first two dungeons over ans over bc i was a scared baby of 20something despite the absolutely wild people ive met and friendships lost and stupid things ive said and done and times i got my butt kicked by mushin
Its about my friends still letting me try the scary raid with them after i have an embarrassing meltdown down in front of them and a bunch of strangers
Its sitting down for hours in a dungeon just to talk bc no one is gonna yell at us to get out
Its watching a whole raid stop and watch a rare item vanish bc one of u thinks its the ugliest outfit in the world and she paid us to throw it out
Its roping people in to farm pirate princess or black ice for months until they finally drop
Its not about reaching the best gear to do the newest raid that kills you for looking at it funny
Its about a game that introduced me to my gf @shironuri
And while i have had a lot of other mmos following some lasting longer than others including a third return to tera
Most are short lived
I don't stay as hooked on some mmos or i fall back into my rapid pick up and put down way of playing games in general
Many mmos are shutting down or mobile only or have specs past my nearly 10 year old pc that i do not have the money to replace
I'm back to staying away from socializing and many of my friends have moved on or have no time for these games anymore (or they're all in ff14 which i technically own but.... you know)
So many mmos i played only a few years ago are just gone or out of my computers power to play (id love to try and get pso2 to work again but i only played on jp and that takes a HUGE amount of time to set back up)
On that note i realize there's a lot of games i play that should go on this blog but i just haven't
Like other social sims
Yall want my vrchat screens??? Eh probably not theres like 2 active followers yall probably see this on my main enough

listen, I have no idea who you are, if this is some sort of “role play character” you’re doing for your blog or whatever but this is an incredibly condescending way to address someone, like I’m an adult woman not a “girl” lol. You can look through this entire blog I have made as an archive of feminist ideological verification cases and the context of women’s rights in South Korea and their feminist movement for context of the project moon case. There are even some book recommendations. I don’t need a male video essayist condensing information and telling me what to think because since the 2016 Gangnam murder case I’ve been following the South Korean feminist movement as much as possible and as much as I can directly from the women there. I can’t know everything and this is of course absolutely nothing compared to the women living there but, again as much as possible, I want for me and others to have context for what these women are fighting against and how the system screws them over. mostly I’ll post news, sometimes I’ll post what I think, you never have to agree with every post I make but the information is here as a jumping off point. I hope more people would thoughtfully research things like this and not just watch someone’s video essay because a lot of you have fallen for some classic anti-union propaganda pretty easily regarding the labor union. You don’t immediately need to have an opinion on something if you’re unsure what to think. So I’m not sure what you mean by “put in a little effort.” Maybe you could put in a little effort, put down the gacha games and read some of the theory and books I’ve posted about here! I think a lot of Project Moon fans see this blog as a “hater” but I just post whoever is engaging in antifeminist behavior like this, I mean I posted a lot about that Blue Archive case, I posted a lot about the MapleStory case, actually I’ve probably posted the most about the MapleStory clusterfuck, it’s not because I’m seeking these things out cuz I hate them like it’s some inane fandom war. It’s literally relevant news to this blog. I’m not in conversation with you or any fan as a “fan or hater”. I don’t care. I’m literally posting and creating an archive.

When I was younger I noticed that the ability to be anonymous online was a powerful tool.
My sister and I have a 5+ year gap, so I used to go onto her MSN account and chat with her friends when I was very little and mess around switching between chats implying to different people whether it was me, her younger sister, or actually my sister. The take I got from it was that people online can’t really tell the difference if you start mimicking certain traits or online rituals. Obviously, most of her friends picked up that it was her dumb little sister chatting (not like I was a great liar in the first place), but people who weren’t as close kinda had trouble if I just copied what my sister typically typed.
Middle school was when I got more into online communities where, for the most part, if you lied about your age (especially on places that required ages 12+ for access), people wouldn’t question why you were there. So I ended up in some Inuyasha rp forums and MapleStory guilds that had all sorts of people and depending on what you revealed, people would take you at face for truth. Generally speaking, as long as you interacted in a way that didn’t make you stand out, people treated you like everyone else (as a kid, the more you chat, the more obvious it is that you’re a kid, pro tip).
My irl best friend was also into a lot of these online communities, but our experiences began to differ significantly as we socialized more online. I was the cautious type in social situations with strangers, but she was way more bubbly and interactive, gaining attention as female gamers do (yes, it happens and if you don’t think it happens, you haven’t played mmos enough). I tried to mimic her personality online because it seemed really fun and beneficial, but uh it... didn’t really work for someone like me, I ended up just getting weirdos/stalkers and had no clue how to interact with people like that. It was frustrating as a kid trying to parse through the social interaction differences of presenting yourself online as a person vs as a girl.
I decided it was in my best interest not to be presenting myself as a girl, but go neutral, and made my main character be a boy. It honestly was kind of refreshing to be represented by this character and be treated by other players the same as usual, it was just comfortable. And for a very long time, this identity I had created followed me through high school as an alternative reflection, like if I ever went online, I could be ‘this’ as long as I follow the ritual and act accordingly. It was a lot of liberty that I’m grateful for and has helped me find comfort in being myself, whoever that may be.
I think this ideal of how being online gave everyone a chance for a clean slate for your identity has kind of been colonized into something more grotesque. What once was a fertile field for the imagination, giving people a chance to explore themselves with little restraint or authoritative oversight, has become entangled with politics, strict categorization and hierarchical tiers demanding you to prescribe yourself to a predetermined tribe. The self-exploration that anonymity allowed has been paved over to make way for adults claiming they’ve already discovered what makes you ‘you’.
I’m appreciative for the time I had away from authoritative figures (teachers, parents, pastors, elder students, etc.) and being online was a part of that equalizing factor. I can only speak for myself, but I don’t know if we should be so eager to be invading that space for the sake of progressiveness when I honestly believe the value comes from self-exploration and self-validation in yourself, not by other people. As it becomes more normalized for everyone to be wearing their identity on their sleeve, it feels like the internal strength and value of knowing yourself has been traded away for the external value of everyone else knowing and validating you.

What is this blog for?
This blog is a place for me to create the fantastical stories of Corvaux Llane. A very unique character of mine I have been on and off developing. I’ll start with a summary post of the world building I have set. Using themes from my own writing as well as the Starbound Universe. We’ll move onto a summary of Corvaux’s life up to the point of the destruction of Earth and the Terrene Protectorate.
This is simply fan faction with my own slice of world building brought into it.
Why am I doing this?
I won’t explain my entire backstory, this is Corvaux’s blog after all. But the short version is that my mind is always working out new stories and imagining grand and distant worlds. I’ve been this way since I was tiny. My storytelling wasn’t always great but that’s not why I did it. I’ve only gotten better by roleplaying, creating, and as my best friend would say, consuming media.
The reason why I’m not using the Starbound Universe as it’s written is a simple but kinda strange reason. I started Starbound up with the Frackin’ Universe mod and found a whole new world of things to do. But what really surprised me was a race called ‘The Nightar’. From what I deciphered based on their gameplay design and a few other key aesthetics, they were a form of Cybernetic Vampire. Which is an aesthetic I never thought I’d get into. I fell in love with my character, Corvaux, so much that I commissioned my bestie at the time to do a full size of him.
But there was a catch. Frackin’ Universe was a culmination of mods. Yes, they were worked on together but it wasn’t it’s own standalone thing. Especially with the races. Which left Nightar with little-to-no backstory. Just small tidbits here and there about certain ceremonies or traditions. Nothing actually concrete. I searched the web to the best of my ability to see if anyone else had done anything regarding these guys. Again, I was met with tidbits and very little actual information.
My friends at the time convinced me that I should instead write about them and world build for them. Because to me, it felt like an underdeveloped concept with a lot of potential. So, I rewrote some of the lesser points of the Starbound story as well as gave the Nightar a chapter in the fate of the galaxy. It’ll begin with the Nightarian Brigade and by the time we get to the events of Starbound itself, they have created their own Fang Empire. But more on that soon.
Many of the details written have been observations I’ve cultivated by playing the game and coming up with my own writer’s reasoning as to why they happen. As well as some additional details that I created myself that might not even match up with the gameplay.
Why should I read this?
To put it simply, you shouldn’t. If you WANT to read it, I would love the support. But don’t do anything because you believe you should. It’s Fanfiction and many people look down on such things. While this does include my own world building, it all began in a game and I only expanded upon lack of details as well as changing details to better fit where things headed.
If you want to label it as something, I’d say this is AU Fanfiction. So things will not be as they were immediately portrayed in the game and even the history of said galaxy may be a bit different than you remember if you played Starbound.
My appreciation
I’d like to thank both Chucklefish and the developers on the Frackin’ Universe mod for giving me the initial inspiration. As well as the developers over at Maplestory for giving me a character design I have cherished since I was a child. And finally, I would love to thank @littlemacarons as well as @growllas for not only pushing me to make these writings a reality but also supporting me in my creative endeavors.

Stories
Fandom: Maplestory
Characters: Hoyoung, Farasi
Word Count: 1005
Summary: Hoyoung was not used to being around children, but when they flock to him when he’s coming back from a job, he doesn’t really have a choice but to go along with their shenanigans.
---
“Ugh, I’m so tired of these small time jobs Taotie,” Hoyoung groaned while putting his hands behind his head. “I wish we could just get to the big monsters already.”
“Well do you know where any of them are?” Taotie asked, popping up beside Hoyoung.
Hoyoung sighed. “No.”
“Then you gotta wait. I didn’t exactly collect all of them overnight.”
“Yeah yeah, I know. I have to be patient or whatever.”
Hoyoung closed his eyes for a moment as he let his feet carry him back to the Bureau. He was about to open his eyes again and walk inside when he bumped into… something small.
“Ouch! Watch where you’re going,” he said.
Then he realized it was a kid.
“Oh no. Hey kid, I’m sorry. I should’ve been watching where I was going.”
The kid rubbed their forehead and looked up at Hoyoung.
“Hmm…” The kid said, looking like they were thinking something over. “You work there right?” They pointed at the Bureau.
“Yeah, why?”
“If you tell me a cool story, I’ll forgive you.”
Hoyoung was a little surprised at this. Were kids normally like this, or was Cheong-woon just that boring that kids had to go asking strangers for stories? Given how his jobs had been, he assumed the latter.
“Okay, I guess I can do that for you.” Hoyoung responded and squatted down to the kid’s height.
---
“I didn’t think it would take you that long to find a watch,” Farasi said as Hoyoung handed her the item in question.
“Yeah well, I ran into a kid just outside the Bureau and they made me tell them a story if I wanted forgiveness. And you know how boring the jobs you give me are, so I had to make one up.”
“What did you tell them?”
“Something about the rolling gourds being alive like us and plotting to run over anyone who walked in their fields.”
Farasi actually let out a laugh at that.
“Did it work?”
“Yeah, and I think I scared them from walking out there for a while. Which is fine by me. Less kids getting trapped by gourds, the better.”
“You haven’t had to save any kids from gourds.”
“Yet.”
“Yet.”
---
It was a few days later when Hoyoung heard someone calling his name as he walked back into town. There was something familiar about it but he couldn’t place it until he was almost tackled to the ground by a kid.
After regaining his bearings, Hoyoung looked at the kid and saw a few more behind them, all with eager grins on their faces.
“Hey mister! You ran into me again, which means you have to tell me another story!”
Hoyoung sighed and crouched down. “I don’t have time right now. I have to meet my friend for lunch.”
The kid immediately started pouting before grinning again.
They latched onto his leg and the other children followed suit.
“We’re not letting go until you tell us a story!” The first kid said.
“Fiiiiiiine”
---
“You get caught up with the kids again?” Farasi asked as the server gave them their food.
“Yeah. They had friends this time.”
Farasi raised an eyebrow at that.
“Word travels fast huh.”
“Yeah tell me about it.”
“What’d you tell them this time?”
“I may have exaggerated the time I caught the shoe thief.”
“Well that was one of your more exciting jobs.”
“Yeah, I guess. Still wish I could do bigger jobs and move up in the Bureau.”
“You’ll get there. You’ve been improving a lot and it won’t be long before you outclass even me.”
“You mean that?”
“Eh. Maybe.”
Hoyoung flicked a chunk of bread at her.
---
The next day, Hoyoung was once again run into by a child while returning from another job.
“Hey you have to stop that or I might start bruising.”
“Well how else am I gonna get you to tell me stories?”
“I don’t know, asking nicely?”
“But that’s not as fun!”
“But it’s nicer! Who taught you manners anyway?”
“My parents!”
“And what would they say if they saw you acting like this?”
“Apologize...”
“If you apologize to me, then I’ll tell you a story. How’s that sound?”
“Will you keep telling me stories?”
“If you ask nicely.”
“Then I’m sorry! I promise I won’t do it again!”
Hoyoung grinned and started spinning another story for the child.
---
This became routine for Hoyoung. Sometimes the kid would be by themself, and sometimes they would bring friends. Sometimes they wouldn’t even be there at all, but he knew that they were somewhere watching. Hoyoung would prepare stories in advance to tell and even write them down so he wouldn’t forget.
And eventually the day came where he had to leave Cheong-woon and move onto other towns to look for the monsters that were released from Taotie. He had already said his goodbyes to Farasi, Kiling, and the Handsome Monk and was trying to figure out how to tell the kids that he was leaving.
He wasn’t sure they would understand, but he figured they would come up to him on his way back after meeting with the Handsome Monk and would pull something together.
The kid ran up to him and pulled on his pant leg.
“Are you really leaving?” They asked, tears already forming in their eyes.
“Yeah. I have to go protect people in other towns now that this one is safe.”
“I’m gonna miss you.”
“I’ll miss you too. Tell you what though, when I stop back in town, I’ll make sure to find you and tell you all the stories of the places I visit.”
The kid wiped away their tears before hugging him.
“You promise?”
“I pinky promise.”
“That’s an extra serious promise which means you have to keep it!”
“I know.”
Hoyoung wrapped his arms around the kid too and very quickly he was covered in a dozen or so children who had been watching from the sidelines.
“Can we hear one more story before you go?”
“Of course.”

Eatjean: I have no idea why it stopped working. I got this watch last week
Y0urnam3: i think you should just give it some TIME
y0urnam3: get it??????
Y0urnam3: cuz it’s a WATCH!!!
Seokjin slapped a hand over his mouth, but failed to stifle the broken laugh behind his hand. He ultimately released a squeaky laugh that almost had him in tears.
“SEOKJIN. I swear to--”
“Okay! Okay! I’ll log off, Yoongi. Relax.”
Besides studying for hours on end at his desk, Seokjin also spent hours playing an online game called Maplestory. He played for years and even if he was juggling his job, social life, and college, he always made time to play. Seokjin made a lot of friends all around the world through Maplestory and even a handful of his friends in college played.
“Dude, you’ve been playing since 8:30. I have to solidify this lesson plan and I can’t concentrate with you laughing and slapping your desk every ten seconds.” Yoongi, Seokjin’s roommate, took his glasses off and rubbed his eyes.
“Sorry, but y/n has been busy with school and we haven’t played together for a while.” Seokjin explained.
Out of all the friends Seokjin made online, you were exceptionally precious to him for many reasons. One, you carried metal straws with you everywhere. Two, you both were majoring in the medical field. Lastly, to be frank, he liked you.
Seokjin met you online through the Monster Carnival Party Quest around four months ago. Being in the last room of the party quest meant having a larger party with characters that had buffs and skills that could be beneficial to the entire team. Seokjin’s party was in need of a healer and happened to choose you, a cleric, to join the party.
For five rounds, Seokjin’s party dominated the party quest and when everyone came to the mutual decision to call it quits, everyone sent each other a buddy request and it all started off from there.
For the next few days, Seokjin found himself logging on around the same time you were online and the two of you spent time farming for mesos, helping each other out with quests, or doing rooms three and four in CPQ because the rooms only required a two-person party. This allowed you two to chat for hours, getting to know each other little by little. Of course, you both took precautions because it was the online world, anyone could be behind their screens and pretend to be someone they weren’t.
After almost a month of chatting as much as possible, you eventually began to trust Seokjin with more personal details of your life. You opened up by venting to him about how your ex-best friend decided to hook up with your newly broken up with ex-boyfriend. Seokjin easily related with you with the same story however, his story happened in high school and he found out himself because he found one of his ex-girlfriend’s blouses in his ex-best friend’s room. Seokjin understood your pain and became an emotional sounding board for you.
Even if Seokjin was your listening ear, the only other information that was shared was each other’s names and major. Honestly, Seokjin was curious about what you looked like, what your voice sounded like, but those things were privileged information that couldn’t be shared that easily. Looking each other up online probably wouldn’t be much help either because there could be a lot of people who had the same names and there would be no way to figure out for sure who was really you and vise versa.
No matter how curious he was, Seokjin respected your privacy and didn’t want to ruin the friendship he had with you.
“You make like you haven’t spoken to her in years.” Yoongi quipped as he typed away at his laptop.
“Just do your lesson plan, Mr. Teacher’s Assistant.” Seokjin laughed and launched a paper ball towards Yoongi’s direction. “I’m packing it in anyways. Y/n has an early class tomorrow.”
↠↞
There were multiple places you could’ve been and your 8 am class was definitely not your first choice.
Your professor for medical terminology had an optional 8 am course which you stupidly decided to attend. It wasn’t because you were failing, your future wouldn’t allow for that. Focusing and studying hasn’t been in your mind for a few days and you needed a refresher.
“Y/n, tell me, why am I even here right now?” Irene dropped her folder on top of the desk next to you and groaned. “I swear my bed was caressing me and begging me to stay.”
You yawned and tapped her desk. “Trust me. I also almost pressed snooze on my alarm but you promised you’d go with me and a promise is a promise.”
“Yeah, yeah, and you promised you were going to treat me to breakfast after this soooo…”
Fifteen minutes felt like four days. Your professor stood at the front of the class rambling on, clicking through his slides while everyone stared back at him with hollow eyes.
You glanced over at Irene who had half-lidded eyes and lazily swung her pen in between her fingers. She was probably daydreaming about the french toast and hot coffee from the diner across campus.
You found yourself doodling in the corner of your notebook with rough sketches of orange mushrooms, slimes, and a family of snails. The corner of your paper was starting to look like a miniature version of Henesys hunting grounds.
Forty-five minutes dragged on by and your professor finally let the class go. You and Irene both had a 10 am class which was why you promised her breakfast; to pass time and to have girl time.
“Are you sure I can order the french toast and waffles? We’re both broke ass college students, you know.” Irene handed her menu to the waitress and smiled.
“Yeah, yeah. It’s fine. We haven’t hung out in a while, so it’s okay.” You assured her.
“That’s because you’re always playing Maplestory.”
Irene wasn’t wrong.
You didn’t mean to spend the majority of your free time cooped up at your desk with your eyes glued to the colorful images on your laptop screen. Some days your logged on to bust ass and level up, but other days you actually waited to see if Seokjin was going to log on as well.
“So, anything new with that Seokjin guy?” Irene sipped her coffee. “Did you ask for each other’s social media yet?”
The answer will always be no.
“I told you, Irene. There’s something about the ‘not-knowing’. Plus, it’s a mutual agreement between us.” You explained for the thousandth time.
“Yeah, but what if he’s a creepy dude trying to hit on you!”
Of course you thought of that, which was also a hidden reason as to you why you didn’t expose too much personal information about yourself. Seokjin only knew your first name, your major in college, and you were sure to change the names of any personal stories that your shared with him.
You made sure to be careful. Always.
“Seokjin has been catfished before on Maplestory and he said it was so embarrassing and painful that he never wishes anything like that one anyone.” This was a story that Seokjin hesitated to tell because of how embarrassing it was, but he knew he had to tell you because he didn’t want you to get the wrong idea about him. This was his way of showing you that he trusted you.
“Well, alright y/n. You’re a smart girl, don’t forget that.”
Classes seemed to fly by after breakfast and after a draining study group, you were eager to have some quality time with yourself.
When you fully logged into your Maplestory account, Seokjin was quick to greet you in the text box.
Eatjean: Y/n!!!!
Eatjean: How was class?
You smiled stupidly at your laptop screen.
Y0urnam3: seokjinnnnnn! classes were just as annoying as yesterday
Yournam3: my energy is at 5% right now
Eatjean: I think it’s bedtime for you
A pout formed.
Y0urnam3: nooooo i waited all day to talk to you
Your feelings for Seokjin wasn’t exactly subtle. You weren’t shy to type out things like “I love talking with you” and “I missed you, sorry I couldn’t play yesterday”. It took a lot of courage for you to do so, but you were sure the courage came from not knowing Seokjin face-to-face. If you were to see him in person after saying all of those things, there was no doubt you would shrivel up into an embarrassed raisin.
Seokjin took a little longer to reply than usual. Instead of seeing his screen name, a spam of a character selling a level 200 weapon for warriors filled the chat box instead. Maybe this was a sign that you needed to stop being so forward with him.
/
“Awww, okay then stay uwu.”
Seokjin scrambled around a blocked his screen with his hands. He whipped his head to the side and found Yoongi peering over his shoulder.
“Y-Yoongi, when did you get back?” Seokjin stammered.
“Just now. Aren’t you going to press enter?” Yoongi stepped away from Seokjin’s breathing space and took a seat on his own bed. “And what the hell is an uwu?”
“It’s a way to express, uh, extreme ador--no, just google it!” He learned the phrase from you a few weeks ago and at first, he was just as confused as Yoongi was.
Seokjin took another quick glance at Yoongi who was struggling to kick his converse off his feet and hit the “enter” key on his laptop.
Within minutes, you replied.
Y0urnam3: OMG YOURE USING UWU ALJDFLKDJ
Eatjean: MY FIRST AND ONLY TIME
Y0urnam3: UWUWUWUWUWUWUWUWUWU
Y0urnam3: btw can you help me farm for some mesos? I still can’t believe i got scammed yesterday
Seokjin didn’t do anything to hide the smile on his face. Why was the word “uwu” so amusing to him? It was probably because it made you seem a lot cuter than what he originally thought.
In the next hour, Seokjin met up with you help you gain back the mesos you lost. After everything, the two of you circled back to Henesys and stood at a random spot in an empty channel.
Eatjean: Brb ya boi needs a snack lol
He stood up from his chair and retreated to a small table in the room that he and Yoongi dubbed as the snack corner.
“Still playing?” Yoongi asked from behind his laptop screen.
“Yeah. We’re waiting for a few friends so we can LPQ.” Seokjin ripped open a bag of sweet corn balls, sending a few flying to the floor. Just as he bent down to pick up the pieces, he caught Yoongi’s eyes staring at him. “What?”
“I have literally no idea what you just said, but go off I guess.” Yoongi went back to typing away on his laptop. “Oh yeah, before I forget, you’re coming this weekend right?”
Seokjin took a quick second to think about what plans he possibly had this weekend, but nothing came to mind.
“What’s happening this weekend?”
“Dude, Jimin’s party? Penthouse in the city?”
It finally clicked in his brain that Jimin’s uncle lent Jimin his penthouse for the weekend as an early birthday present. Seokjin was invited last week along with Yoongi and they were given strict instructions by Jimin to clear their schedule for Saturday night.
Was it selfish for Seokjin to want to stay back at his dorm and talk to you all night? There was no doubt that Yoongi would agree to go because he has been complaining the entire week about “needing a fucking drink because fuck this lesson plan”. With Yoongi gone for that evening, that meant Seokjin could laugh to his heart’s content all by himself.
“I--” Seokjin dragged on. “I don’t know. I might just stay here and relax.”
“Relax my ass.” Yoongi said in a joking tone. “Seokjin, you’re going. It’s just one night out. Y/n is not going to disappear all of a sudden.”
Of course Yoongi was right. It was just one night off campus and having a drink with his friends was a plan that was long overdue. But Seokjin liked you too much, so it was normal to want to talk to you as much as possible.
Seokjin sighed quietly. An unnecessary battle between the two choices flooded his mind. Going to the party was obviously the answer that settled at the tip of his tongue.
But y/n… ugh but Jimin...
“Fine, okay. I’ll go, I’ll go.” Seokjin lifted his hands in the air in defeat.
There was no point in telling you about the party because just as Yoongi mentioned, you weren’t going to disappear into thin air. Plus, Seokjin wasn’t your boyfriend. He had no business in telling you every single thing that he was going to be doing.
Eatjean: Okay, back
Eatjean: Sorry my roommate was just telling me about his day
Seokjin waited a few minutes before receiving your reply.
Y0urnam3: ohhhhh this is the teacher’s assistant right?
Y0urnam3: how was his day?
Y0urnam3: and how was yours too!! i forgot to ask lol
He smiled and danced his fingers along his keyboard.
Eatjean: That’s the one! And he’s in desperate need for a drink
Eatjean: My day was alright. We’re already preparing for midterms so that’s a bummer
After hitting “enter”, Seokjin pressed the F4 button on his keyboard making his character have a crying facial expression.
Talking to you was always easy. He never felt the need to force a conversation with you because you both shared the same interests and had an understanding school schedule. If there was a chance where he could meet you in person, he was so sure that it would also be just as easy.
For the next two hours, Seokjin aided you in farming for mesos until the party was full to complete a few rounds of the party quest. Even if his eyes may have gotten dry and his back was tight, he enjoyed the time he spent with you.
Y0urnam3: okay seokjin it is LATE and ya girl needs to sleep
Seokjin frowned.
Eatjean: Already T__T
Y0urnam3: i know in sory
Y0urnam3: im sorry****
Y0urnam3: ive been keeping all school related stuff on the back burner and i need to get accepted into the nursing program i told u about
“Ah..right.” Seokjin muttered to himself.
Eatjean: OH OF COURSE OF COURSE
Eatjean: Pls focus on school too!! Trying to become a cardiologist isnt a walk in the park either so i understand
Eatjean: Study hard and get some rest y/n
After receiving your reply filled with words of encouragement for Seokjin to also study hard, he finally shut off his laptop and flopped onto his bed. Since school was a huge priority for you, this probably meant you were going to spend more time hitting the books and using your computer for actual research purposes.
“If only we had each other’s instagram handles or something.” Seokjin groaned and waited for a response from Yoongi.
The room stayed silent and when he turned around, Yoongi was sitting in his chair with his head tilted backwards and had a red pen tucked behind his ear. His desk was cluttered with debris of papers and his laptop was wide open with what seemed to be an answer key.
Seokjin stared at his sleeping friend for a while. “Yeah. He needs a fucking drink.”
↠↞
“Okay, bitches. Clear your schedules. We are going to get crazy tomorrow..” A mutual friend of you and Irene, Seulgi, dropped her binder and textbook on top of the table where you and Irene were studying.
“Crazy?” Irene questioned. “Really?”
Seulgi dropped herself into the seat next to you and sighed. “No, I’m kidding. I just wanted to invite you guys to my dorm tomorrow to have a study session and a few glasses of wine.”
“Ugh. I’m in. I have been crazed this whole week and I need the alcohol.” You shut your textbook and rubbed your temples.
“Are you sure? You’re not going to isolate yourself and play Maplestory—and I mean that in the nicest way possible.” Irene reached over and clasped your hands with hers.
You laughed knowing there may have been notes of bitterness in her words. “Yes honey, I’m sure. Both Seokjin and I have mountains of work that we’ve been putting off so I don’t know when’s the next time we’re going to be online together.”
Seulgi raised her eyebrows and leaned closer to your shoulder. “And how is it going with Mr. Eatjean? Are you two going to get married in Amoria yet?”
You snorted and gently pushed Seulgi’s head away from your breathing space. To your surprise, Irene laughed along understanding what Seulgi was talking about; she never played the game but you talked about it so much with her that she caught on some of the terminology that was used.
Unfortunately, what you said was the truth. You haven’t been able to play Maplestory in a while and you really missed talking to Seokjin. It wasn’t easy being in the medical field, but you had to give your future career some of your attention at some point.
When Seulgi invited you two over for a study session, you imagined having a few glasses of wine while listening to jazz and getting a lot of work done. However, none of that happened.
Just when the three of you were settled in Seulgi’s room, almost ready to pull out the wine cork, Seulgi receives a very delightful phone call from a friend. Next thing you knew, you were carefully applying lip gloss in the backseat of an uber and Irene was racking her brain over whether or not she wanted to unbutton the first three buttons of her top.
“Ugh, just do it already! Jihyo is going to be there tonight that’s why!” Seulgi gently tugged on Irene’s hand who was holding onto yours. “And y/n, stop pulling the skirt down. That skirt was meant to be that short.”
“I know, but oh my God, the exposure!” You tugged at the end of the black pencil skirt Seulgi let you borrow.
“Sooyoung, should’ve let us know ahead of time about these plans.” Irene complained.
“At least this is way better than studying—hey, Sooyoung!” Seulgi called out.
Sooyoung met the three of you at the elevator and hastily rushed you all down the long hallway that was filled with gorgeous college students. You all entered a doorway that was also filled with students who were either already wasted or making their way towards that level. Some of the students were familiar to you and others were definite strangers; Sooyoung seemed to know most of them.
“Girl, where is your brother anyway? We have to at least greet him happy birthday first.” Irene tippy toed to get a good look of the people in the kitchen.
“He’s in here somewhere. Let’s just find him later.” Sooyoung began pouring vodka into shot cups while you poured sprite into four other cups.
“You know, I keep forgetting you have a brother.” You spoke over the mixed sounds of music and voices of people. “Why don’t you two just go to the same university?”
“Well, you know how it is. Siblings, different majors, scholarships, blah blah blah.” Sooyoung brushed passed the subject and handed out the shots and chasers. “Come on, you girls need to catch up, especially Irene because Jihyo looks hot as fuck tonight—to Jihyo!”
Sooyoung raised her shot cup and while you and Seulgi complied with the cheer, Irene begged you all to tune it down. Although she did mutter, to Jihyo, before gulping down her vodka.
You, Seulgi, and Sooyoung were huddled in one part of the living room to keep an eye on Irene who seemed to be a bit more confident in talking to her crush; all thanks to some liquid courage.
The entire floor was covered with people making it almost impossible to not bump into anyone.
“Oh! Sorry!” You yelled over music. “This place is so boujee! If I ever lived here, I would never leave.”
Seulgi laughed and nudged your shoulder. “Penthouse or not, you never leave your dorm anyway!”
“Ooh! Is it because of that game you’re playing? How is that dude-guy anyway?” Sooyoung slurred.
You scrunch your nose and helped your drunk friend sit down on a nearby chair. “How much did you drink before we arrive?”
Sooyoung gently tugged on your pencil skirt. “Answer me question. When are you and denim jeans getting married in Amoria?”
Seulgi threw a fit of laughter as she explained to Sooyoung that she said the exact same thing.
“We are not getting married in Amoria. We’re not even in a relationship.” You squished Sooyoung’s cheeks with one hand and took a sip from your mixed drink.
“But why not? It seems like you and sack-jeans are into each other. I say, date!” Sooyoung waved her red cup in the air and you and Seulgi did your best to calm her down. A drunk Sooyoung was something else.
“Honey, you need to relax. It’s only eight in the evening and for your information, his name is Seokjin and we’re just Maplestory buddies right now. We don’t even know what each other looks like.” You stroked Sooyoung’s hair and took another sip of your drink.
“Y/n, just listen to the poor girl and date him!” Seulgi let out a high pitch snicker and gave Sooyoung a high five.
Talking about Seokjin was definitely bringing your mood down. Maybe it was the alcohol messing with your emotions for than usual, but you really missed talking with him.
“Y-Y/n?”
You felt a tap on your shoulder and you spun around, making eye contact with one of the cutest guys you ever laid your eyes on. He wore a red t-shirt that hugged his broad shoulders and had jet black hair that was styled upward. If his eyes didn't catch your attention, his lips sure did. The only thing wrong with him was that he knew your name and you didn’t recognize him at all.
“Um and you are?” You questioned, readying yourself to perform some sort of self-defense.
“It’s me.” He gestured to himself. “Seokjin.”
↠↞
Seokjin weaved himself around the kitchen, trying to find a bottle of Grey Goose to refill his drink.
“Damnit, Jimin. How many people do you know?!” Seokjin grunted. “Oh, Joy! Pass me the bottle when you’re done.”
The already-drunk-sister of his friend gave him a thumbs up before filling up the last shot cup and slid the bottle down the counter. Seokjin tried to thank her, but her focus was immediately back to her friends.
“Dude, where’d you go?!” Yoongi bumped into Seokjin, almost making him spill his drink.
“Okay, I know you need this wild ass night, but please relax. This is my favorite shirt. It accents my shoulders.” Seokjin grabbed his friend’s cup to give him a refill.
“Hurry. Namjoon is freestyling in the living room and it’s fucking fire.” Yoongi nudged Seokjin’s arm to make him lead the way into the living room.
Seokjin was more than supportive of his friend’s desire to drink his stress away, but having to deal with Yoongi’s drunk ass plus a few more of his friends was making him wish he was back at his dorm, double clicking the Maplestory icon. But he had to admit, Namjoon was spitting bars.
“Oh! Sorry!”
Seokjin turned around to find one of his friends stumbling over, almost knocking down a group of girls.
“Good grief, Sandeul. Sit here, please.” Seokjin gently forced his friend to sit down on the couch in front of him.
Just a few more hours, Seokjin. Just hold out for a few more hours, then you can drag Yoongi back to the dorm.
“-getting married in Amoria?”
Seokjin chuckled. I guess there are other Maplestory players here.
He didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but he was trying to catch wind of the conversation behind him. However, the music and crowd was too loud to hear most of the conversation.
“-and for your information, his name is Seokjin and we’re just Maplestory buddies for now.”
“Y/n, just listen—”
Huh, Seokjin. That’s my name too- WAIT.
Taking the heavy risk of appearing as a creeper, Seokjin turned around and tapped the girl behind him.
Here goes.
“Y-Y/n?”
When she turned around, Seokjin was blessed to see the cutest girl he has ever seen.
“Um and you are?”
Seokjin braced himself and pointed to his chest. “It’s me. Seokjin.”
You widen your eyes and Seokjin could tell you weren’t as convinced.
“U-uh, it’s really me. Eatjean? I just helped you farm for more mesos because you were scammed the day before.” Seokjin’s heart was thundering in his chest. The alcohol could’ve also played a role in that, but it was also because he was extremely nervous that the girl right before his eyes was actually a different person.
“Oh my God. Oh my God.” You repeated. “Oh my God, you’re really Seokjin!”
The nervousness was slowly exiting his body once he saw the smile that grew on your face. Thank heavens, it was really you.
“Y-Yeah. It’s me! Wow, I just—I’m—w-wow.” Those words were the only ones that Seokjin could muster.
You let out a snicker and tucked a few strands of hair behind your ear. “I can’t believe—”
“Seokjin?! This is denim jeans?! Date her!” Sooyoung suddenly gripped your shoulders.
“Excuse her. Sooyoung get your shit together for a second please—” Seulgi tugged at Sooyoung to leave you two alone. “Continue!”
Seokjin chuckled and looked over his shoulder to check on his friends who were still invested in freestyling. He then took you by the hand to stand in one part of the living room that had a little less people.
“You’re friends with Jimin’s sister?” Seokjin questioned.
“Yeah! We go to the same university. Why the hell hasn’t she mentioned you to me before?” You sighed sadly.
“I’m actually closer to Jimin.” He explained. “I even forget that her real name is Sooyoung. Jimin only refers to her as ‘Joy.’”
You took a sip out of your drink and nodded your head. “What a small ass world.”
Seokjin stuffed his hand in his pocket and leaned in closer to you. “You wanna get out of here?”
↠↞
“I told you to not use the scroll! It only had a fifty percent success rate.” You shook Seokjin by the shoulders who was devastated by the choice he made.
At first, you were feeling hints of regret after quickly accepting Seokjin’s invitation because you didn’t know what his intentions were. But he was just as quick to assure you that he wanted to bring you to his dorm to have some pizza and help him with his character’s accessories.
Seokjin was the perfect gentleman, just as you imagined. He gave you some of his clothes to change into so you were comfortable, he even stepped out of his dorm so you could have privacy. He let you sit in his gaming chair while he took a random stool from inside the dorm. When the pizza arrived, he remembered how much you loved pizza crust so he gave you every single one from each slice he took.
If you knew this was the type of guy Seokjin was, you would’ve gave him your instagram a long time ago.
“Hey, cut me some slack. I took a huge risk here.” Seokjin spun you around in his chair. “And I remember a certain someone who spent almost nine hundred thousand mesos on a staff she ended up not needing.”
“Fine, fine. Touche.” You scoffed and jokingly threatened to leave his dorm.
You scanned Seokjin’s desk and saw nothing but textbooks, what seemed to be study guides, and a few empty coffee cups. Being under the same university major umbrella, you understood the mess all too well.
“How’s your studying going?” You asked, tidying up some of his papers.
“Ehhh. I put the dying in studying.” Seokjin joked and you playfully hit his shoulder. “I’ve been up all night for the past few days.”
“Awww, you poor baby.” You ran your fingers through his hair and his eyelids fluttered closed at your touch. “Well, I guess it’s sort of no different from when you’re playing Maplestory with me.”
“Hmmm, I beg to differ. I actually enjoy spending time with you online.” Seokjin sighed happily. “And maybe I can enjoy spending time with you in person this time around?”
You laughed and brought your hands to your face to hide the blush he caused. “Ohhhhh, very smooth, Seokjin.”
“Do you accept this quest?”
You studied Seokjin’s facial features on more time; his big eyes and pouty lips. After knowing each other through an online game, it was only right for you to finally get to know the real Seokjin.
From what you already knew, he was a sweet man who enjoyed trying new food, doing word search puzzles, and taking every opportunity presented to him to make some sort of pun. He could be a bit cheesy and a bit dorky, but it was all endearing. And because of all the time you’ve spent reading his cheesy lines through your laptop screen, the next words that came out of your mouth was just as cheesy and dorky, but it fit the moment.
“Quest accepted.”

It really brings the creative side out of me and I enjoy it.
Q: What is your favorite piece of content that you’ve made? A: My favorite self-content...that is a hard choice, but I'd have to say my first (ongoing) or maybe even second TUA fic (The Valentine's Day one). I always write about my BROTP (Klaus and Diego) and I really enjoy writing their dynamic. Despite the various amounts of content I do try and put out, I definitely feel kind of proud of my writings since I never used to be this encouraged to write fics, much less share them!
Q: Do you ever wish you did something else for the fandom? A: I really wish I could do more, like share art I'm actually comfortable with sharing more openly. If I was able, I'd go out and be more active in the fandom in general (convention meet-ups etc). Not sure what else I could do though, that would take a lot of pondering. Q:  What is your favorite piece of content that you haven’t made? (Made by someone else in the fandom) A: There's a lot of content to love. But honest to the little girl on the bike...the one that broke me first, was tehmoonofficial's (YES YOURS) 'Kill Reggie' post. I'm dead, deceased, my gravestone surely says "Death by the best thing ever." That's right, I'm actually answering these from beyond the grave. Thank you so much <3333 (x)
What are their views on TUA?
Q: Who is your favorite character? A: Klaus is definitely my favorite (yes I know a majority of the fandom loves him lol) for so many reasons. I really feel for him, ya know? I also love how flawed he is, but there are so many good things about him as well.
Q: Which is your favorite, comics or show? A: The show is my favorite hands down! It's so relatable and grounded. I really feel the show on a more personal or somewhat personal level maybe? While I do like the comics, too, I feel like they're still separate from each other and that's actually not really a bad thing. Q: What is your favorite part of the show? A: There are so many parts that I love (the whole show please?). Joking aside (is it really a joke though?) Klaus opening up to Diego is actually kind of important to me, so those bits are probably my favorite(s). I've always loved best friend/sibling relationships and while they're nearly as rocky with each other as they are with their other siblings, their closeness is there, it never really left. I adore that a lot. Q:  How do you feel about the fandom discourse? (Like sibling shipping, anti-Vanya, anti-Luther, etc) A: I think discourse is crazy, honestly. Personally, exclusions suck (Luther and Vanya). And while I do not sibling-ship, I can understand the logic from both sides I guess? It would indeed bother me a LOT more if they were biological for sure. That said...it makes some people happy and I can't really take that away from them. All in all, discourse sucks too! -
Thank you so much for being interviewed! You’re a joy to have on the discord server. <3 To everyone else: stick around for the other interviews with equally awesome creators! If you have any other questions for Rae, put them in the notes here or send her an ask!

My Experince With a Manipulative Start-Up
I recently cut my ties to an abusive and emotionally manipulative start-up as a part time game developer. Here’s my story:
I was at a networking event and made a friend who has a start-up which writes cases studies and develops a virtual reality game to educate corporations on me too situations. Even though I’ve never personally been through any sexual harassment/discrimination as a woman in engineering, I support preventing those situations.
I was interested in knowing more about the company and the next thing, I was hired. I joined the start up as a part time game developer back in April/May 2019. The start-up began in October 2018 and didn’t even have a business plan - just a 20% filled template with some brainstorming. I thought it would be a good experience learning about how to grow a company and learn more about the whole situation.
Unfortunately, the reality of the company wasn’t as sunshine and rainbows as how the co-founder made it seem. It wasn’t until after I expressed interest in joining that the co-founder told me that the role is un-paid. Since she was “so nice,” I didn’t want to turn her down.
On top of that, they had no game project to show for or even a organized description of the game (literally just a scene in unity with a character from the asset store that moves around with the asset store rigs with three pieces of furniture from the asset store). Their project management was also missing, so they literally had to ask me to teach them project management and communication/teamwork skills using Trello/SCRUM. Additionally, I was asked to work on the front-end part of their website on top of their game. I agreed to work extra with no compensation or agreement of compensation because they were “so nice.”
During these past two months, I’ve seen two people quit out of the 7 total people. Half the people don’t even regularly show up to meetings (and say that they can’t make the meeting like 5 mins after it starts) and I was asked to attend all of the meetings (5 hours a week of just meetings total when actually half the time I’m sharing my screen and showing them how to organize a project, use Unity, or design UI/UX all while unpaid) I wouldn’t mind working for them as it’s also good experience doing more things. However, the thing is that they keep changing their mind about things so I feel like this is going nowhere that every time I receive a message about the start-up, I cringe and feel uncomfortable.
On top of that, I am at least 5 years younger than everyone at the start-up. As a recent college graduate, I have little experience compared to them so they decided to take advantage of my background. I previously did not know that signing an unpaid contract (not even equity/stocks for the “company” when I’m doing all this work for free) was a red flag because they were “kind people.”
They also know that I’m very involved with school organizations/extracurriculars and have larger networks outside of school than them, so they asked me to reach out to my network to see if anyone is interested in investing and working for them. I thought this was all fine because they were “so nice” as they continued to over-complement everything about my work and background as they added more tasks for me. I felt like I owed them my knowledge and experience because of the way they complemented me.
This start-up has abused my time, energy, skills, assets, and network by emotionally persuading me to give them all this free labor and knowledge/tutorials with no agreement of compensation. They manipulated my emotions into believing that they are “good people.” I felt so guilty and mean speaking up about this for months because I thought they were “so nice” and didn’t want to make them “look bad” when they just sweet-talked to me for my assets. This is so ironic as the start-up’s mission statement is to create a safe and non-toxic workplace. I should have listened to my gut feeling.
I thank my family and my MapleStory M guild, Era, for talking me about this situation right when I needed it the most, encouraging me to know my worth, and giving me courage to quit the company and speak up about my experiences.
It’s hard to see in the moment, but looking back, this was a valuable life lesson. Now, I’m ready to open up and be honest about what really happened.

how do you know if you’re getting addicted to an MMO?
my sister gifted me New World for my birthday, which was nice, but also...*interesting*. While companies with the resources to develop a high production value MMO are probably all at least sketch as fuck, Amazon isn’t even sketch, because sketch implies ambiguity over how fucked up it is, and Amazon is Amazon. Again, any high budget game developer probably lacks the credibility to make a game about guilt-free colonialism, but the fact that it’s Amazon is next level.
despite all the negative reviews and forum posts I’ve skimmed through, i’ve been enjoying it. partially because I’ve never actually played an MMO with any real investment before, and i have a group of four to play with this time around. it’s also the case that i picked two weapon types (closest equivalent to classes in New World) which match my playstyle nicely.
A defensive rapier style scratches my fighting game itch with being able to parry and combo, and the trapper musket style scratches what little FPS interest I have, making it more about tactics than headshots. More importantly, playing with friends is fun. I always understood that conceptually, but after getting in over our heads with my sister against a bunch of vampiric bat beasts and triumphing by the skin of our teeth by instinctively cycling their aggro, i can finally say i’ve experienced that type of fun firsthand.
on the plus side, the rest of my group can’t play that often, which should encourage me to not spend too much of my time on it, because none of them want to be carried. on the other hand, the fact that there’s a part of me considering making a secondary character should probably concern me.
I have to say that the immersiveness of the game really helps. i sorta played MapleStory back in high school, but the 2D anime-esque presentation didn’t do much for me. But the environments combined with the frontiersperson-style crafting has thus far (3 days in) kept all the fetch-questing from going stale. Specializing in muskets is a pain in the early game because of how many resources are required to make ammo cartridges. You need to gather hemp from caves, and take it to the loom to make linen, and mine iron ore from mountainside deposits, which you then smelt into iron ingots, then you need to smelt wood into charcoal, and gather saltpeter from caves to make gunpowder, then combine it all together.
I actually stopped doing quests for awhile just so i could discover patrol routes that would take me through all the areas where all those natural resources were, and got practiced in fighting the different kinds of enemies inhabiting those different areas as well. It actually felt rather rewarding, especially after struggling through the early levels and having to rely mostly on my rapier skills because of how scarce ammo was. Also, several of those areas were filled with undead monsters who were resistant to piercing damage.
maybe everything i’m describing is, functionally, rather basic for any MMO veteran. again, the game doesn’t have high reviews, but i don’t intend on developing high standards because that requires me to become more invested in MMOs than i want to be.

Irregular Interviews: Pathway Translations
Finally, a normal interview for once.
The first thing I noticed was that parking was a pain. Every spot seemed to have a sign threatening a tow if you didn't know exactly what you were doing, which felt almost like a personal insult to someone as endlessly clueless as myself. Eventually I just parked next to one of the least scary signs near the main building, and nervously shuffled inside. Thankfully a receptionist inside confirmed that my car wasn’t going to get kidnapped by a random tow truck while I was trying to make myself look like a potential employee.
I took the elevator to the second level and noticed that the whole building felt...dingy. The carpet was an old, ugly gray color and was torn up in places. It wasn't, like, Hell's Kitchen bad, but it was a notable step down from most potential employers that I've visited.
“Pathway”'s main office was better--but not great. The biggest piece of furniture I saw was a series of shelves with anime-ish figurines inside them, which was right to the left of me as I entered. Now I’m not the biggest weeb in the universe, but I still felt surprised that I did not recognize a single character. The office itself had no carpet. The whole place felt rather empty, which made sense as I later learned that they had recently moved. As for actual humans who breathe and stuff, the place was populated with less than a dozen young adults who, in my brief survey of the office, appeared to largely be Asian.
After finding the person I was supposed to talk to, I was led into a side room that appeared to be a sort of break room with a water cooler, fridge, and a hybrid Foosball/pool table. You know, every employee’s biggest dream There was also a shelf completely filled with enough junk food to make the average soccer mom demand an exorcism. In there, I was told to fill out an application, which asked for all sorts of information. I very slowly and carefully filled out the stuff that was already on my resume, and omitted information that I didn't feel comfortable providing at that time (namely, my SSN).
Then, I was directed into an adjacent room that was sparsely furnished with a couch, class table, and a TV with a PS4.  I could not see any games, but then again, it’s not like I was going to rifle inside their cabinets—I don’t think “snooping” is a marketable job skill. At least, not for this line of work.
When I had applied for this job, I did so with the knowledge that the company localized games that were initially published in some foreign language, so the game console was hardly a big surprise, but a part of me hoped that there would be copies of games that the company had worked on strewn about, players vigorously looking for errors that would need to be patched out later. Instead, there was only this one black box, next to this one black TV.
Eventually someone walked in, and that was where the real interview began. He refreshingly asked me all the typical questions: "tell me about yourself", etc. The only unusual stuff was asking about my gaming habits--I mentioned Mario Odyssey and Fallout: New Vegas. I kinda feel like he was hoping that I would mention some of the games that his company had worked on, but that didn't happen.
I was then informed that my job would be to help translate text for Korean games--that is, someone would give me a vaguely-comprehensible literal translation of some Korean text, and I would be told to rewrite it so it flowed naturally in English. They were specifically looking for someone who didn't know Korean. The problem, then, was that in this particular medium, the context for the text I would be translating would not always be available, and often I would have to guess at certain details.
After that interview, I was directed to a keyboard in front of a tablet, and told to complete a test. It involved, well, doing exactly what I described in the previous paragraph. I had a spreadsheet and was told to look at one cell of garbled nonsense and write what I thought it was trying to say in an adjacent cell, without any information about what the game was about or how its magic system worked or any other seemingly relevant details.
Naturally, I ran into a technical error partway through. I was able to restart the program to solve the issue, but I would up losing all of my progress in the effort. I started my guesswork from scratch and hoped that it wouldn’t be counted against me. After all, the proctor gave no indication that the test was timed.
After the test, the interviewer led back into the room with the PS4, and I asked him questions to show that I was actually interested in this. He said that he couldn't say every game that the company had worked on due to NDAs, but he then claimed that he had worked on MapleStory and a handful of other games that I only vaguely recognized.
This confused me a bit. I don't know anything about the way this practice is completed, but why would a company not be able to name previous projects? And why can I not find any mention of Bridgeway on MapleStory's website or Wikipedia page?
However, I did not voice those concerns. Instead, the interview essentially wrapped up then and there. As I left the office, I looked back and the cabinet with the anime-ish figurines and deduced that they were all tied to previous projects that the company had worked on, which were all games that I was too snobbish to bother with.
When I walked back outside, my car was still there and had not been abducted by rogue tow trucks.
At least, not as far as I knew.
