I love this in Spanish too, there are lots of idioms, sayings and proverbs related to the textile work as well.
Very often you hear that someone is hilando fino, to mean that they are connecting ideas with care and detail (particularly for puns or other witty comments). Very rarely does someone think that this "hilar" is related to fabric work in any way (spin).
And don't you know that unos cardan la lana, y otros tienen la fama? Some do the hard work but it's the famous people who market it and are the face of it who show for it. Or as I recently learnt in a traditional wool work workshop (so many wo-): because people would congratulate the spinner on her very good thread, ignoring the work the carder had put so that it was easy to spin.
Even things related to sewing get lost in the metaphor and the everyday use when someone is not only fast to speak but also able to really connect their ideas to the way they express them, the way they paln everything they do so that you know the work behind it. No da puntada sin hilo, we say to show we noticed.
I guess we could stay here all day, pegando la hebra, and connecting one topic to another the same way you connect a thread that broke.
One of my favorite things about learning about traditional textiles is the little ghosts they left in the language. Of course the ghosts are there, now that I know to look for them. Once upon a time, half the population spent a majority of their day making textiles. Spinning, at the very least, has been a part of humanity since the Neanderthals. That kind of knowledge doesn't just disappear.
A heckle was a device with sharp metal spikes, and people drag flax through the spikes to separate out the fibers from the chaff. When you say someone heckled a performer, you think you are being literal but you're speaking in an ancient metaphor.
When my grandpa says "spinning yarns" to mean telling stories, he knows that one's not quite literal, but its vividness is lost to him. There is no image in his mind of rhythm, muscle memory, and the subtle twist that aligns clouds of fibers into a single, strong cord.
When a fanfic writer describes someone carding their fingers through someone's hair, that's the most discordant in my mind. Carding is rough, and quick, and sometimes messy (my wool is full of debris, even after lots of washing). The teeth of my cards are densely packed and scratchy. But maybe that's my error, not the writer's. Before cards were invented, wool was combed with wide-toothed combs, and sometimes, in point of fact, with fingers. The verb "to card" (from Middle English) may actually be older than the tools I use, archaic as they are. And I say may, because I can't find a definitive history. People forget, even when the language remembers.

The apartment was quiet, bathed in the soft, late-afternoon glow filtering in from the windows. You sat at the edge of the couch, fingers absently tracing the stitching on the cushion. It had been a long week, though the days blurred together in your mind. You hadn't realized how much you'd been retreating into yourself until Ingrid had gently brought it up a few days ago.
The memory of her concerned gaze lingered. Her accent had softened as she tried to coax you out, her dark hair brushing her shoulders as she tilted her head, those warm, understanding eyes never leaving yours. You'd done your best to brush it off, claiming you were just tired, but she'd seen right through you.
As if on cue, the soft padding of footsteps reached you, and soon you felt a presence settling beside you on the couch. Ingrid reached over, her hand warm and reassuring as she took yours in her grasp.
"You're here but... you're not really here," she murmured, her accent lilting gently with the familiar cadence you loved. "You know you can talk to us, right? Anything that bothers you... it bothers us too."
You gave her a small nod, though your gaze was fixed somewhere near your knees. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Mapi saunter over. She plopped down on your other side and slung an arm over your shoulders with casual ease, her own energy a contrast to Ingrid's gentle calmness. Mapi's English was still a learning process, but her warmth and sincerity transcended language. She didn't need to speak to tell you she cared.
Between the two of them, you felt the walls you'd been building crumble, piece by piece. You closed your eyes, feeling Ingrid's thumb gently stroke the back of your hand, Mapi's fingers playing absentmindedly with the hem of your shirt, her hand just resting against the bare skin of your side. You inhaled, the familiar mix of their perfumes grounding you, and finally spoke.
"I... I just feel like I don't belong," you admitted, your voice barely a whisper. "Like I'm intruding. You two, you've been together for so long, you understand each other in ways that I can't... And I can't even speak Spanish properly. I just feel like an outsider."
Ingrid shifted beside you, her hand moving to cup your face, gently turning you to look at her. Her eyes were filled with a sadness that you hadn't intended to cause, and it made you feel small. "Why didn't you tell us sooner?" she asked, her voice soft but laced with worry. "You don't have to go through these things alone."
Mapi let out a little hum, her brows furrowing as she leaned into your side, pressing her forehead against your temple. "Amor," she said, her voice a gentle whisper. "No eres outsider. Eres parte de nosotras, ¿vale?"
You turned to look at her, trying to decipher her words. She caught the uncertainty on your face and gave you a grin. "You," she said, pressing a finger to your chest, "are family. Ingrid, yo... we are family. Tú también."
Ingrid nodded, her gaze softening even further as she watched you. "Mapi's right. You're not intruding, and you're definitely not an outsider." She paused, letting her fingers drift down to your cheek before giving it a soft, affectionate squeeze. "We chose you, love. Both of us. And we don't do things halfway."
The conviction in her voice made you swallow hard. Mapi squeezed you tighter, and you felt her fingers trace small circles against your skin in that absentminded way that always made you feel anchored.
"Is it... is it that bad for you?" Mapi asked, her Spanish slipping in with a heavy accent, each word deliberate. "Being with us?"
"No!" you said quickly, surprised by the intensity of your own response. "No, it's nothing like that. I... I love being with you both. I just... I just don't feel like I'm enough sometimes."
Mapi clicked her tongue, rolling her eyes with an exaggerated groan before switching back to Spanish, muttering something that you couldn't catch. Ingrid laughed softly, reaching over to squeeze Mapi's arm.
"She says," Ingrid translated, with a playful smile, "that if you think that, you're more ridiculous than she is."
Mapi looked indignant, her brow furrowing as she playfully swatted at Ingrid, but her expression softened as she looked back at you. "We know what we want," she said, her English stumbling slightly but her meaning clear. "And we want... you."
Your heart stuttered, and you felt tears prickle at the corners of your eyes. You blinked them back quickly, not wanting to ruin the moment with your insecurities. But Ingrid noticed, of course she did. She always did. Her thumb brushed gently under your eye, catching a stray tear as she pressed a soft kiss to your forehead.
"You don't have to feel like this, amor," she whispered. "We're here. You're not alone in this, okay?"
Nodding, you closed your eyes and leaned into her touch, letting her warmth wash over you. It was only then that you realized how tightly wound you'd been, like a coil that had finally been allowed to release.
"Maybe..." you started hesitantly, and both of them looked at you with patient, expectant eyes. "Maybe I just need a little more time to... feel comfortable. I want to get better at Spanish, to communicate with Mapi more."
Mapi laughed softly, patting your thigh softly before giving it a squeeze. "Ay, amor, don't worry about that. I'll teach you." She shot you a wink, and you couldn't help but smile. "And if not... Ingrid will translate. She's good at that."
Ingrid laughed, rolling her eyes. "Good enough," she agreed, giving Mapi a playful nudge. Then, her gaze softened, and she wrapped an arm around you, pulling you even closer into her embrace. "But really... it doesn't matter how much you speak or don't speak. You're already part of us. The language... it's just an extra layer."
For the first time that week, the weight on your chest felt lighter. You exhaled slowly, sinking deeper into the couch, wrapped up in both of them. They were right, of course. They'd never given you any reason to feel out of place; this had been your own insecurities feeding on the language barriers, the cultural differences. In that moment, with Ingrid's gentle words and Mapi's warm hand on your skin, you realized that maybe... maybe you'd been looking at it all wrong.
"Thank you," you murmured, voice barely audible, but both of them heard you. Mapi reached up to gently cup your face, pulling you in to press a kiss to your forehead, lingering there with an unspoken promise that everything would be alright.
"Always," Ingrid whispered.

Summary: There is only one night when you have enough courage to do something completely out of place: kiss your mentor. Word count: 650 Warning: All my stories are written entirely in Spanish and then translated into English, so I apologize for any mistakes I might make.
Your white silk nightgown billows behind you as you hurry barefoot down the long, dark corridor, rushing past worn tapestries of forgotten lineages hanging on the walls. What you’re about to do is completely out of line, you think to yourself. But it’ll only be for a moment, and surely, by morning, it will all be forgotten.
Leaving behind large windows shrouded by heavy, tattered velvet curtains, you place your hand on the banister of the staircase leading to the main tower. Your reflection flashes for a brief moment in a gilded baroque-framed mirror, and with your heart pounding in your chest, you begin to ascend toward your mentor's room.
With your breath coming in short gasps, you reach the final step and spot the massive dark oak door at the end of the corridor leading to Mihawk’s quarters. It’s tall and arched at the top, restored to perfection, likely by the swordsman himself. As your eyes linger on the black wrought iron reinforcements and the intricate designs of the hinges, the enormous gothic clock in the corridor begins to chime. You flinch, and clenching your fist tightly, you raise it into the air, swallowing hard before knocking gently with your knuckles.
Tap, tap, tap
On the other side of the door, there is absolute silence, but you know your mentor is an extraordinarily quiet man. So, patiently, you wait for the room’s occupant to answer, trying to steady your racing heartbeat with deep, calm breaths. Your bare feet feel cold against the marble floor, and you lift one to rub it against your calf. With the tips of your fingers, you adjust the neckline of your nightgown, wondering if you should knock again when the refined iron handle of the door turns with a heavy click.
The massive door opens, and Dracule Mihawk’s piercing amber eyes meet yours, unblinking. If he is surprised to see you, he doesn’t show it, remaining the reserved and stoic man he is.
"Yes?" his velvety voice says, just as the clock finishes its final chime.
“Sir, it’s…” Your gaze falls on his slightly tousled hair, and the realization that you may have woken him causes your confidence to falter. But you quickly compose yourself, determined to complete your mission. “It’s midnight.”
Mihawk stares at you as he calmly rolls up the sleeves of his white, ruffled nightshirt, then glances at the clock on the wall.
“That's correct, thank you” he says, speaking in the same soft tone but devoid of any emotion. “Anything else?”
"Yes," you reply quickly, your heart hammering inside your ribcage as you step closer to him. Feeling the weight of his piercing gaze on you, your hands tremble before seizing the ruffles of his shirt. Then, rising onto your tiptoes, you press a soft kiss to his tightly closed lips. "Happy New Year, sir."
Mihawk shows no visible reaction, though you catch a glimpse of his fists clenching at his sides, his hawk-like eyes straining to avoid scanning you from head to toe.
“That was completely out of place, Miss,” he finally says, chastising you in the same tone he would use to correct a poor fencing move. But you don't care. All you feel in your body is the adrenaline of finally kissing your mentor. Quickly pivoting on your bare heels, you rush to leave the place as swiftly as you arrived, unable to suppress the triumphant smile that tugs at the corners of your lips.
Mihawk’s sharp eyes follow the billowing of your white nightgown as you walk away. Once you vanish from his sight, he steps into his room, closing the massive door behind him and leaning back against it, one hand running over his face. His fingers pause over his lips for a moment, recalling the soft touch of yours, before he exhales long and deeply.
You were definitely going to be the end of him.

Seeing as my internal rewards system has moved on to 'trans fiction' from 'queer horror audio drama podcast' I thought I should do a little roundup of everything I listened to the past few months.
A rough ranking:
Malevolent. Just squeaking into the top spot here based on 1) technical prowess (iykyk) 2) compelling characters and story and 3) they are my blorbos your honor!!! Mind boggling that Harlan Guthrie has so much chemistry with himself.
The Silt Verses. Only topped by Malevolent bc season 1 is not as polished, but it really doesn't matter. Top tier characters, amazing worldbuilding, intricate plotting and it had something to SAY about the casual violence of systems, the nature of hope, the complexity of being human in a world that tries to make us inhuman. Also, it doesn't rely on some thin recording contrivance (a framing device that has its place) and instead truly takes the mantle of audio drama without apology.
The White Vault. On the topic of framing devices, TWV has a very cool take on found footage recordings. A group of [researchers/archeologists] are sent to investigate a remote site in [Svalbard/Patagonia] and the podcast is structured as a documentarian presenting the notes, recordings and diary entries in a reconstructed timeline. My favorite element is that many of the characters don't make their notes in English, so the segments will often open with the VA speaking German, Spanish, Mandarin, Icelandic, Russian, etc etc before fading into the translation. There are miniseries between the seasons available on their patreon and they were so worth the $10 I paid to access them for a month. Reveals are slow, but worthwhile, and the mythology built for the show is highly original and intriguing.
Deviser. A one season contained story from Harlan Guthrie of Malevolent. Scifi, psychological, lots of wet awful body horror. If you're a fan of Harlan wimpering into a mic, you'll love this one.
WOE.BEGONE. Long, ongoing, and so so so far from the original premise it's hilarious, I'm ranking this higher than it maybe deserves for two factors 1) the creator and the VAs are clearly having a blast and 2) it's riding the line of taking itself serious despite a premise that invites irony poisoning without becoming too wrapped up in itself. It's fun, I think, that keeps w.bg strong.
The Magnus Archives. Should this be one up? Probably. But everyone bloody well knows tma by this point, it's good, great even! Beyoncé of horror podcasts.
I Am In Eskew. Only knocked down due to the actually godawful sound quality. Truly unsettling stories though (the one with the building architect haunts me) and a surprisingly realistic conclusion. You can see the bones of The Silt Verses here, from the same creative team.
The Magnus Protocol. Everything above this is there due to originality. As a sequel series, TMAGP will always suffer in that measure. However, I like our new cast and I do love an alternate reality. Curious to see where season 2 takes us. I'd like to kill Mr Bonzo in a fire.
The Inexplicables. Another one season story, this time from Rusty Quill, with really fun, flawed characters and no recording framing device!
Wolf 359. Storywise, great! Characters, excellent! Kicking it way to the bottom bc they just would NOT STOP referencing H***y P****r. Yes, Doug's characterization hangs on excessive reference humor, but that was one well I wish they'd left alone.
Red Valley. Knocked for HP references too (come ON british podcasters, do better) but more importantly for veering WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY too close to real life in season 3 onward. I was here for a horror sci fi story about cryogenics, not to listen to my worst climate disaster fears brought to life via hearing rich old sods try to buy their way out of consequences while the world burns and eco terrorism escalates. Too real. Not bad storytelling, just very much not fulfilling my escapism needs.
It's kinda crazy to me that anytime I mention this genre to normies in my life they say, "oh, like true crime podcasts?" And then I die inside. No dude, like radio drama. Like War of the Worlds.
Anyway, I'm off to get even less relatable by reading a zillion niche trans novels (hello Welcome to Dorley Hall, aka, what if there really was a 'trans cult' force femming dudes to undermine their masculinity? It's amazing how much yarn we can make by subverting the cis gaze.)

Omg omg so since you said you're ok with suggestions. Do you think you could do Optimus x afab Reader who speaks spanish? The reason is because smth I CANNOT get out of my head is that Matrix of Leadership in Spanish is Matriz de Liderazgo.
Matriz also means womb.
So I can picture Optimus showing the Matrix to the reader (Bc its visible in most of his incarnations), and reader joking about showing him their "Matrix". ESPECIALLY bc reader can explain this is how humans reproduce, I feel like he'd be in awe!!

How to write European characters for Americans (and for everyone else, but especially for Americans):
Rule number one: Europe is a continent, not a country. No, European countries are not like American states. They are all totally autonomous and may be massively different even when they are neighbours. So everything I tell you might not be the case in every country in Europe or not in all parts of all countries!
-not everyone owns a car and many people prefer public transport or bicycles over driving, especially in north western Europe. Places that cannot be reached by foot exist, but are rare.
- Euros are the currency in most countries, but not in all. Im countries poorer than the EU average, Euros might be accepted, too, in richer countries they will not be. Cents and 1€ & 2€ are coins, the rest are notes. The notes don't all have the same sizes! Cash payment is favored in some parts of Europe, card in others. Debit cards are way more common than credit cards!
- Eastern European countries are way poorer than Western European ones. You see a lot of people moving west for work. People from Western Europe hardly ever move to an Eastern European country.
- In Northern and Central Europe, pretty much everyone younger than let's say 70 speaks at least a decent English. Millennials and Zoomers often also speak French or Spanish. In Southern Europe, the younger generations usually speak English, but elderly people are usually monolingual. In Eastern Europe, German and Russian are common second languages, often even more common than English.
- in an elevator, people usually lean against the walls and look into the middle. Standing in the middle and facing the door is uncommon. Unlike in America, you keep your fork always in the same hand and do not move it to the other hand during the meal.
- Northern and Western European countries have got a lot of foreign citizens. South Asians, Africans, Caribbeans and other Europeans are typical in the UK, Arabs and Africans in France, Arabs and Latinos in Spain, Africans in Italy, Turks, Poles, Arabs and Russians in Germany, Arabs and South Asians in the Nordics. Eastern European countries are way whiter and their foreign population mostly consists of people from neighbouring countries.
- some countries prefer their local cuisine, others prefer international food. If a country has got a world-famous cuisine, it probably belongs in the first category, if not in the second.
- With the exception of a few countries (Ireland, Finland and the Baltics), football is the number one sport. Every country has got a national professional league, but especially people from smaller countries often support a team from another country, usually from England or Spain. Women's football is way smaller than in the US and is often ignored or forgotten. Even though each of these has got at least a small fan base in Europe, you cannot expect people to know anything about NBA, NFL, NHL or MLB. Other notable team sports are handball, basketball, ice hockey and rugby, but this depends very much on the country.
- in most countries, sports clubs play a huge role, and school and especially university sports teams hardly exist.
- colleges don't really exist in most countries. If you're going for an academic degree, you'll go to a university, for other careers you'll usually get trained by your company and acquire some kind of diploma. I actually never really understood the difference between a college and a university and so do probably most people here. Studying is not free in every country, but public universities are usually very cheap and under 1000€ per year. Applications for universities are way easier than in the US and usually free. Many people go to university in their hometown. It is not common to move out from home before your early twenties, especially in Southern and Eastern Europe, unless you go studying in a different city. Students live with their parents, in a flat share, with their partner, very rarely alone or in a student's residence. They do NOT share their bedroom with anyone and fraternities or soririties in an American sense do not exist in any country I know.
- Windows can and will be opened frequently. Air conditioning is common only in the Mediterranean and is used to cool down the room, not to let fresh air in. For that purpose, we open the window.
- for distances of a few hours, Europeans either take the car or the train. You can reach every major European city by train, but this doesn't mean the train service is always good. For longer distances, flights are common.
- Germany is always less modern and the Baltics are always more modern than you expect.
- Europeans are just as political as Americans, but every country has got a great variety of different political parties, even though usually 1-3 of them dominate the political landscape. "Liberal" means "center-right" in Europe. Leftists would define themselves as socialists, social-democrats, communists or anarchists. Most countries have at least one conservative AND one extreme right party.
- You can't just fire someone for no reason in most European countries. You'll often have to pay them at least a few monthly salaries as compensation. Every country has got universal health care, though it isn't always good or accessible, and it does NOT depend on your employment. The number of sick days is not limited and even though some countries work even more hours than America, people usually can't be contacted by their employer in their free time.
- the EU is often criticised, but mostly viewed as positive. National laws may not break European law and you see EU flags on many public buildings.
- if someone owns a gun, they are a hunter, a cop, a soldier or a gangster.
- parties start and end way later than in the US. In most countries, no club will close before 3am and you don't arrive at the club before midnight. Sometimes you can party until 8 or even 10 am.
- it is common to cross an international border for shopping if products are cheaper in the other country.
- people are less religious than in America. Even in the most hardcore Catholic or Orthodox regions, you don't see shit like in the US. People there might be frantically kissing some Saint's painting, but they don't believe Jesus died for their right to own a gun or stuff.

One day more or Sale el sol? Los Mis 2010
Okay so yesterday I made a post about Los Miserables 2010 and discovered there's more people who love it??? Someone asked me about the spanish translation of les mis and it was the straw that broke the camel's back for me to finally make a post. You have NO IDEA how long I've wanted to talk about this. Anyway, today I'll be talking about the 2010 spanish translation BUT I already have in my drafts a post comparing the spanish 1992, spanish 2010 and the original english versions. Without furhter ado, here are my thoughts about Sale el sol:
First things first: the title. "Sale el sol" means "The sun rises". I didn't use to like the translation because they could have gone with "Un día más" (as they did in 1992). It means exactly "one day more" and fits the music almost perfectly (you just have to pronounce it a little bit weird but nothing that isn't a common thing to do in songs). But then I saw this tweet:

"The phrase the sun rises instead of one day more to speak about resilience in a country in which the sun was used by fascists makes one feel mental peace, feel justice, feel art and revolution, it feels like recovering the light and coming out of the shadows"
A little bit of context: Spain was in a fascist dictatorship until 1975. There is a famous song from that time called "Cara al sol" ("Facing the sun"). It was the anthem of the Falange, a political party, but it's still used today by fascist groups. In this context, claiming the sun for a message like the one this song sends is really poetic justice and I just love it.
They also use the idea of the sun rising in "La canción del pueblo/Do you hear the people sing?" (I'll make a post about that one too) so it really links the two songs together in a very beautiful way. I could speak about the title for hours, but let's go to the lyrics:

There's a lot I could say about Enjolras' part related to the 1992 translation but that will be a different post. Now take a moment to appreciate how Daniel Diges sings this lines pls look it up I love him

As you can see, in the translation we sadly lose the repetition of "one day more" 😔 Also Javert saying that the revolution will be born dead conveys to me the certainty that he had that it was not going to work. The army won't have to do much because the revolution will die by itself (and he was right, the people didn't join 😔)

Honestly I don't fully understand the Thenardier's part in english so I can't properly compare it, but they're so caothic in both languages, this part is so funny.

My favourite part of the song 😭 In english "Do you hear the people sing?" is the title of another song but since that one is called "La canción del pueblo" ("The people's song") they couldn't keep the verse exactly the same. But it's the first verse of The people's song

Just Javert's part bcs it's different, the others are kept the same than previously if I'm not wrong. Once again, there's no repetition in spanish 😔

I find it funny that since the original one talks about dawn at the end they translated it to "un día mas", doing the opposite of what they did with the title. It made me wonder for years why didn't they use it for the whole song since it fits the music. But now I know and you know too.

ordem paranormal question: im getting into Ordem Paranormal as someone who speaks like. very very little Portuguese. I don’t mind sticking with translated English captions (I’m learning Portuguese but my main focus is on Spanish atm since it’s my minor) but I was wondering, do you happen to know any other good resources for translated Ordem paranormal media? Such as English transcripts of episodes etc etc - @piglin-union
the ordem wiki is hands-down the best wiki i've ever encountered and they have almost every page translated into english, with very detailed summaries of every episode and every document uploaded in order of its appearance. i do get the vibe from a decent amount of the english on the wiki that it's either machine-translated or just not done as well as it could be (no shade, translation is incredibly difficult and particularly when getting complicated ideas across & things that don't have easy translations), but it's still pretty accurate. the english summaries from my memory are pretty good although i haven't read through them since AOP.
i don't believe there are english (or portuguese) transcripts of episodes posted anywhere, but equipe t, the team who does the official english and spanish captions, does technically transcribe everything into spreadsheets for translating, so you might be able to ask about seeing copies of those, if that would be helpful for you. their discord is linked on the twitter link i provided in case you can't get a hold of them there.
i will say, their translations are absolutely incredible and extremely accurate, and at the moment i believe they're through episode 8 of desconjuração, which is the third season, and have the translations for the rest of the season, they just need to do the finishing work and then upload them. so if i were you i would just watch the episodes with the english subtitling turned on (the official english, not auto-translate, at least until/unless you catch up to equipe t) and then go over the episode pages on the wiki to make sure you understood everything. honestly i keep the episode pages open just to be able to look at the evidence myself, so i recommend that generally for anyone who's getting into ordem and likes thinking about the mysteries.

For the people not part of a gendered language who might be confused as to how this works, let me break it down as if you're a child (aka how it might be explained to foreigners learning the language):
I'm Portuguese, so I speak a romance language. The overwhelming majority of words are gendered based on their ending. In portuguese, "o" is for masculine words and "a" for feminine. In words that end with "r", usually there's an "a" or "o" that precedes them to give the gender. "A" is feminine because that's how you adress women, and "o" how you adress men ("A Maria" vs "O Jesus").
Examples:
People/animals:
Teacher - "Professor" is masculine, "Professora" is feminine. Cat - "Gato" is masculine, "Gata" feminine.
Objects:
Chair - "Cadeira", feminine. Lamp - "Candeeiro", masculine.
As you can see, it's not that a chair is female, it's that it ends in "a", thus it's feminine. In portuguese you don't just say chair, you say the chair, so the gender signals you must say "a cadeira" and not "o cadeira".
There are, of course, exceptions to this rule. "Dor", meaning pain, as an "or" end but is feminine. "Clima", meaning climate, ends with an "a" but is masculine.
Then there's words for alive beings that only have a masculine or feminine form with no equivalent - "tartaruga", meaning turtle, is always feminine even when talking about a male turtle. It's always "a tartaruga".
Then there's adjectives. Adjectives ALWAYS match the gender of the thing they're describing. If you want to say Maria is beautiful ("bonito/a"), you say "A Maria é bonita", not "A Maria é bonito".
Looking at the example above, with "persona nonbinaria" and "humano nonbinario" (which is spanish, I think), the word "persona" (person) is always feminine, so the word that follows it must be feminine as well. "Humano" technically has a feminine form in "Humana", but it's seldomly used, so you default to the masculine and use "nonbinario" as the adjective.
This is true when talking about men and women too. Masculine person = persona masculina, Feminine human = humano feminino.
It's important to also note that, culturally, the masculine is gender neutral. If you're talking about a group of teachers, you use the masculine plural "professores". You only use "professoras" with an "a" if every teacher is a woman. So naturally, when talking about nonbinary people, if you say "humana nonbinaria" you would be gendering the individual as a woman, because the masculine covers the gender neutral whereas the feminine doesn't. You could argue the language could be changed to have gender neutral versions of words, but you must understand how much more difficult it is to realistically do that in comparison to just using "humano" or "persona".
Sorry for the rambling. Sorry if I'm mansplsining. I just feel like non-gendered language people might not fully understand why a chair is feminine and not masculine, so I wanted to chime in.
we don't even call grammatical genders the same thing as gender genders... like do people just not notice that it's "feminine" and not "female". those are different words
