You are not a child. Unless you choose to be. In which case you don't get to demand that adults remake the world to your childish liking.

i feel like people forget that sometimes characters in fic are written like that because it's a reflection of real life.

people have sex without setting boundaries. people have unprotected sex without talking about their sexual histories or producing recent sti tests. people play with kink without discussing it ahead of time or establishing a safeword. they have anal without 'enough' prep or lube—they may even prefer it like that.

and none of this is really a fantasy. it's all pretty normal. you can feel that it's inappropriately normalised, and you'd probably be right! but it is normalised: one study found that 58% of female undergraduate students on the campus studied had been choked during sex. 20% of those students said that they'd never been asked if it was ok; another 30% said they'd only sometimes been asked if they consented. fully half! (non-paywalled journal article on choking during sex here, including these numbers.) despite a rise in stis of all sorts, condom use is declining. (pdf link to the full text of this study about declining condom use in the us; aidsmap article about an australian study with similar results.)

even when people do talk about things—sex or anything else—they communicate imperfectly. 'yeah, but don't go too far' is consenting and setting a boundary, and also relying that the person you're talking to has the same metric for 'too far' that you do. for some people, 'the trash needs to go out' is a neutral, factual observation; for others, it's a request that the person they're speaking to take out the trash.

even when people understand each other perfectly, people react unpredictably to things sometimes! we behave irrationally! people laugh uncontrollably at funerals, or get angry at the straw that broke their back rather than the enormous load they were already carrying. they get scared and lash out at people trying to help them. when hurt, most people do not instinctively reach for therapy-approved grounding exercises and 'i feel' statements.

pretty much any bad choice that characters could conceivably make is a choice that people make in real life, on purpose, all the time. people do things that can have catastrophic, life-changing effects because it felt like a good idea at the time, or they're leaning into the vibe, or they just didn't think about it all that much, or an infinite number of other reasons.

fiction isn't intended as a guide on the best, safest, and most responsible ways to live your life, and fanfic isn't any different. it's not a narrative flaw to let characters do things that are messy or harmful or downright stupid—it's a reflection of what people are actually like, and not something that authors should feel they have to apologise for.

It has been approximately one million years but I woke up with Only Friends thoughts today. Specifically Boston thoughts. So I'm making them yall's problem.

The show's messaging about Boston was wrong for a very specific reason that can be boiled down to one word:

The truth is that Boston is an asshole AND he had consensual casual sex with a lot of people. But what the show said was that Boston is an asshole BECAUSE he had consensual casual sex with a lot of people and that is incorrect.

It's very much a two things can be true at once situation not a causation situation like the show treated it as. In fact, I would argue that Boston's "friends" were bigger red flags than him because of how they treated him for simply being a slut. Which is a morally neutral thing to be.

And that's why I don't know if I want to watch the second season because I don't want to watch another season of a show where the messaging for the arguably aro character is that they are an asshole because of it.

Martin: We are both grumpy in the morning when we just wake up. Whoever has to wake the other up is gonna be on the receiving end of that grumpiness, so it's things like these where we have to find a compromise.

Kenji: I didn't have much acting experience before. I think when it comes to intimate scenes in BL, aesthetics are really important. In a het drama the kiss scenes are more fast-paced, but in a BL you're really trying to capture the best angles so you have to slow down. I gave my first on-screen kiss to Martin.

Martin: There really is a difference. It's a lot more straightforward in a het drama but in a BL you're trying to capture the most beautiful angles. It's a good thing Kenji and I are close and we really trust each other so we don't need to hold back for fear of making the other uncomfortable.

Martin: Actually we recently came up with the best term to describe our relationship.

Kenji: 日常 (daily/domestic life). Before we even filmed "Taste Hunter" there were a lot of occasions where we would see each other. And sometimes even without making plans we'd run into each other randomly. You can call that fate.

Martin: I believe it was fate that connected us.

Kenji: Sometimes people would wonder if we'd get tired of seeing each other so often, but I think we're even closer than family so it's become a habit.

Martin: We're at the point where we can just be comfortable in each other's company without putting in extra effort to maintain our relationship.

Kenji: So there's a difference between how I present myself on screen and how I am in real life. If you've seen my older work you might know that I'm pretty restrained. Martin and my other friends know this. It takes time for me to open up. So acting opens up a new world where I can show different sides of me and the audience will see that I have range as an actor. I've learned a lot about myself and built up more confidence because of acting.

Q: What about singing? Has that helped with expressing your emotions?

Kenji: Of course. Our theme song to me is like Ye Hai Yuan's confession, or a love token between him and Xia Cha, so singing that song with my character in mind should hopefully get all of that messaging across to the audience.

Martin: I fell in love with the demo immediately and I kept asking my agency if they found a lyricist yet, until one day I just couldn't wait anymore and wrote the lyrics myself. There's some grammatical differences between Cantonese and Mandarin so Vision helped tweaked my draft so it flowed more smoothly. (more on the song title which he already shared in another interview I translated so not repeating that)

Kenji: Of course. When we sing the songs it's normal to picture the scenes in the series. When I'm singing the theme song I'm thinking about Ye Hai Yuan on the chase and taking initiatives. When I'm singing "Freeze" I'm thinking about all the times I've acted immaturely and upset Xia Cha.

Martin: When I was writing the lyrics I wasn't thinking about the overall structure of the story but rather just taking a single detail and spreading that into different emotions. So I feel it's pretty easily relatable not just to Xia Cha but also to Ye Hai Yuan.

Kenji: That's what we call implicit understanding. I think we all emit unique energies beyond the stereotypical labels of "extrovert" and "introvert." Once I open up I'll keep talking to the point where people get annoyed.

Martin: I'm the one who usually warms up the crowd and then I'll retreat into myself.

Kenji: I'm the one who usually wraps up.
