How to get the confidence to dress alternative in public: LONG POST {from a scene king!!}

I hear a lot of young teens online saying things along the lines of, “I would love to dress like that but I’m scared”. We’ve all been there, it takes bravery to step outside the box. Since 2020, there has been an uptick in alternative fashion, which makes things a little better, but it doesn’t mitigate the fear some people feel.

As someone who has been dressing alternative all throughout highschool and who I’d like to think has some 17 year old wisdom, this is how you can get the confidence to dress how you want. This can apply to other alternative fashion types like decora, punk, goth ect ect.

Realize why you’re scared: Is it because you’re afraid of being different or picked on? Are you afraid of change? Do you think your friends/peers won’t care about you anymore? These are all valid reasons, and once you know why, you can start to tackle it. Change isn’t bad, everyone changes, change is natural. Look around at nature, seasons change, we grow and age, animals migrate and go through metamorphosis. You don’t have to be confined to one thing forever just because you weren’t born that way. As for the fear of being picked on, fuck those people. Do you know why people tease others? It’s because they’re insecure. Hurt people hurt people. When people see you being yourself and they wish they could do that, they take it out on you because in their heart, they’re jealous. You’re not the problem, they are. (If you’re afraid of being physically hurt, that is completely different and I would not advise putting your safety in jeopardy)

Start slow. While you’re still building your wardrobe, you can start slowly stepping out with small accessories and such. Add some kandi to your outfit or a tattoo choker. This is mainly to ease yourself into it. Big changes can be pretty scary and jarring, so easing into it can help you.

Have some role models. By this I mean, have people you look up to, people that are inspiration to you. Me? Some of mine here on tumblr are @xx-may4-malic3-xx , @xx-k1tsun3-k1d-xx , @xxdespairfactionashtonxx , @cigsnvalentines to name a few. Theres also some old scene queens, musicians, ect. Find whoever you want. I’m reccomending this, because when you see other people doing the same as you, it makes you go “if they can do it, so can I”. Most people probably wont even mind if you send them an ask about specific things (ik i dont, i love them).

Kinda the same point, but build a community. We have a pretty good community here on tumblr. Community is the backbone to everything. Ideally it would be someone irl, but not everyone is lucky enough to have cool irl friendz.

Fake it till you make it. Nobody has to know you’re scared but you. I’m not saying get super extroverted if you’re introverted and go around exuding confidence like a lazar beam. Dance in your mirror, hype yourself up. Take cool pictures and edit them, even if you don’t post them online. Learn to walk with your head up, again SLOWLY. As you start introducing more alternative elements into your wardrobe, wear them with pride.

Be the change you want to see. What I mean is if you want people to be kinder, you be kinder. Try to compliment someone every day. People actually aren’t as rude as you think, maybe I’m an optimist, but I think the average person isn’t terrible. Complimenting other people also makes you feel good, try it. Piggybacking off this point, don’t take things so personally. I know if can be easier to harp on the negative looks and comments you got versus the good ones, but you have to look past this. There are gonna be bad apples always, but their misdeeds can blind you from the people who think you’re pretty cool. Don’t let one bad apple ruin the bunch.

Lastly, realize being cringe is okay. Not just realize it, but internalize it. What even is cringe? Define cringe… Weird? Different? Everyone is different, everyone is weird about something. As I said earlier, some people are just too scared to be themselves. In 80 years when you’re old and looking back on your life, would you rather regret not being your authentic self, or think of all the fond memories of your life? Regret is one of the worse things in life, it’s terrible. There is nobody you can be but yourself. You’re you, so be you.

Remember that this is something that can take months or years. I feel like this past year and a half I have become fully confident in my fashion. I have been dressing alternative for 5 years for reference. I hope this could help someone.

You were making some kandi bracelets again since you didn't really have much else to do and also wanted to add more to your collection (you already had like 37 but shhh) until you heard your door creak, causing you to look up to a tall, smiley, blue haired figure, which was Floyd of course!

"Heya shrimpy, watcha making there~" He asked with curiosity in his eyes.

"Nothin much, just making bracelets" You responded as you tied the string together to finish this piece off.

"Ohhhh...I think I tried that before but got bored cuz the beads kept falling off" Floyd sighed, "But I like to make shirts!" Floyd excitedly claimed. "Really?? Me too!" You smiled. "We should bleach some shirts together sometime!" You requested. Floyd put a finger on his chin, pondering. "Mehhh...maybe...OR we could right now" He instead offered, to which you had to accept, hell maybe you could even give him a full makeover!

You got the black shirts, cardboard, and bleach out and began working. The two of you finished after about 15-20 minutes and adored the results. Floyd went with a skeleton type pattern and ended up cutting the sleeves off his shirt, and you'd gone with a spine with wings, but in all honesty you just went with whatever came to your head as you'd done so.

You two complemented each other's shirts and such and then you offered the idea you came up with earlier. "Floyd, what if I gave you some clothes to style with that shirt? I have some stuff that I got in a size too big so I haven't worn it yet, and I could get you some shoes" You suggested. "Shrimpy, giving me a makeover?hmmmm...sureee, but only if I can give you one too!" He said, and you nodded your head.

She's a very toned down person, so all of the accessories and loud music just kind of overstimulates her

But, its not like shes gonna make you dress any way

If you like the way you dress, then thats your choice and she respects that

She would like to watch you style your hair and do your makeup though

Shed find it intriguing, and she enjoys seeing how your styles differ

She might let you style her hair as well, but it would take a lot of convincing

She is very particular about her hair, and seeing all of the hairspray you put in yours, it would really make her uneasy

But if you did convince her, she'd be pleasantly suprised!

She'd want you to style her hair more often, because she discovered that the way you style it actually flatters her face shape very well

okay so starting out! i have my plushie collection. i have sans, papyrus, flowey, lancer, and two chapter two ralseis that my bf got me the second he released. one of them is wearing the butler outfit. i got one for free because my first one had stains on arrival. so now i have a second to wear the costume! i also have bootleg sans and papyrus and bootleg asriel.

i have all of the nendoroids sans spamton. the undertale cast is displayed on one shelf and ralsei on another. undyne broke into toriel's house and took the pie that's why she's not on her mountain.

i have the fangamer undertale vinyl boxset! i have the first run boxart with gaster on it [picture included]. he is not in any prints you can get now. i own the fangamer deltarune chapter one and two vinyls as well.

for one of my holy grail pieces of merch, i own the iam8bit undertale vinyls! they stopped making them a long time ago. you can find them average between the 100-200+ range. but the real holy grail is the 7" vinyl. it's in the first picture and then there's a picture of the vinyl attached. it has dogsong on it. it was a preorder bonus for the original vinyl and there were NOT many made because the vinyl went up for preorder in 2015 or 16 iirc. i have only seen like four listings for the dogsong vinyl ever and most sit in the several hundred dollar range. i bought a bundle of the original soundtrack AND the dogsong vinyl for one hundred and fourty dollars. AN INSANE COP. i won. I WON!!!! i had been looking for a good listing for YEARS.

i have quite a few pins although i would like more. i have the flowey fanclub pin, the lancer bike pin. the fanmade ones i own are both mettaton + a ralsei button that i made. on this backpack i also have the mewmew keychain. they stopped selling her a while ago so i had to find her second hand. it was also EXTREMELY difficult to find a listing for her!! but i found one for 15. only two over retail. yay!

as for unofficial clothing, i have two hoodies from etsy. one of them is a chara hoodie, and the other one is a lancer inspired hoodie with a spade that comes down over your face! it's so cool despite the fact i can't see out of it.

hey! you're super cool and i wanna know: how to find cool scene clothes and where to look :3 im in the uk and a beginner in scenemo style (i listen to the music too :3)

aw, thank you honey!

my number one suggestion is thrift/charity shops! you can find genuine pieces from back in the day, and more modern pieces for cheaper than brand new. it's ecologically sustainable by keeping less clothes out of landfills, which is super punk. you can also find a lot of accessories this way as well

i think it can also depend on your sub-style. are you a layered cami with a ton of chunky necklaces and skirt layer over leggings scemo? a band tee and shutter shades scene kid? a hoodie and skinny jeans emo? a kandi crazed scenecore raver? all of the above? you can find a lot of basic pieces (solid colored tops, jeans, hoodies) for any sub-style thrifted! it doesn't have to be things with prints or patterns!

of course, for really niche things, pickings are a bit more slim. but the good news is a lot of mascots, media, and bands that are popular in the scene have either stayed relevant, or have had a comeback! so it is possible to find things like hello kitty and some band merch thrifted. (a lot of cute mascot and "girly" stuff ends up in womens/teen girls sections, and a lot of band merch and "masculine" stuff ends up in mens/teen boys sections. i also find patterns like leopard, star, and skull prints can end up in either section)

i wouldn't say there's a "technique" to shopping, but by color/pattern for some pieces like tank tops i find works. by cut for dresses, such as if it flares in a tutu-like manner if you vibe with that for example. i often just look at all the tshirts because you never know what can be screenprinted on them unless you look!

there's also the resale market, like depop and ebay. i find those are hit and miss because oftentimes they inflate prices, especially for really sought after brands (tripp fairy shirts or bondage pants as an example.) i also find it less appealing that there's no fitting room to try things on in, and often you have to pay shipping. i personally recommend it most if you have a very specific thing you're trying to find, or for accessories since they're pretty much one-size-fits-all or hard to get one that won't fit, like belts

if you can't find things thrifted, a lot of brands still sell merch new for reasonable enough prices, and a lot of them sell to different retailers. i'm in the us so i'm not as familiar with uk retailers unfortunately, but i know a lot of brands and retailers also ship internationally

truffleshuffle is a retailer i've ordered from in the past based out of the uk, and i believe they carry some brands that i even wore back in the day, such as loungefly

for other accessories, this may sound ridiculous, but sometimes childrens' sections may have things, like cute bows in a girls section, or hats in a boys section. for some jewelry, plastic and gaudy is popular in scemo style, so fake plastic jewelry in cute colors could work! that's also a section to look for things like cartoon merch, if there's anything you can find in your size

you could also franken-style, say if you find a shirt that's too small but has a print you like; you could cut it out, and sew it onto another shirt, maybe jazz it up with studs or safety pins? sewing bows and applying studs to pieces is a way to make basic pieces more scemo too

Ghoulia is so cool, I love her a lot. The point of this redesign was to keep her vibes while adding my own personal design choices into the mix. So, here we go!

Her eyes are crossed as I’ve seen people draw her with that before and I thought it was so cool. Her hair is less saturated, as well as her skin. I wanted to make her actual body closer to greyscale so her outfit and makeup would pop. I made her hair spikier like she has layered hair. I kept her cheekbones because we need more cheekbone girlies. You’ll also notice she has crutches! The original G1 zombie had some mobility issues, so I figured giving some of them crutches could help them get around easier.

As for her outfit, the original gave me scene kid vibes, so I tried to match it while giving her some more zombie motifs! I gave her a tank top with brain cherries to tie in both the cherries from the original as well as the brain look I was going for. Her undershirt’s stripes are more chaotic, and her pants are ripped. I gave her tons of kandis and thick bracelets, and gave her the classic scene kid two slanted belts. I made her glasses slightly less cat eyed at the tips, because I figured most of her design was already pretty spikey.

Overall I think she turned out super cute, but let me know what you all think!

MY FAVORITE DETAIL ABOUT MY OCS (literally none of this has anything to do with the lore it’s just silly stuff abt my characters i like)

cassidy: she has a lot of gray hairs for her age (she started getting them super young and bragged to everyone to seem older and cool)

kira: she used to have a huge emo/scene phase in 9th grade (she looked awesome)

quill: would wear kandi and bracelets RELIGIOUSLY for a few years straight so now there’s around 3 inches on their arm that’s way lighter than the rest

anthony: he loves writing poetry and has given all of his friends a poem and he gave a few to cici to start dropping hints that he liked him !! (and whenever he gives them a poem it doesn’t matter who they will sob uncontrollably while reading it)

pricila:( GUH SHE CAN DI NO WRONF IN MY EYES) despite hating being touched by most people she gives THE BEST hugs (like the rib crushing, soul ascending type of hugs that make you wanna sleep)

Hi, so sorry to just dump this here but it popped into my brain and it won't leave

We all know incubus Jack, right? Right. So, this is something similar to that. In this AU Joseph is the incubus but after realizing he wants to be better after meeting his sunshine he takes on the role of Sunny Day Jack to be their "guardian angel". He looks the part too, due to shape-shifting he looks like the perfect clown-themed angel...but he's not. He's an incubus, and if he doesn't get some skin-on-skin contact with his sunshine soon he could starve, or worse, lose the magic needed to keep up his angel facade

So, that's the basic jist, sorry again for just plopping this in your lap ^^;

It's alright! I think it's a really cool and clever idea. Thank you for sharing it with me.

It fits with the theme that Jack is "clean" while Joseph is supposedly not. It also fits with the idea of Jack trying to appear like the ideal best friend/love interest for MC, while also having a dark side to him.

I like the touch that all Jack needs is skin contact to feed himself. It can allow for him to sneakily get some nourishment when he needs it while still being MC's perfectly innocent and angelic best friend. A high-five can be a quick snack, and an offered massage to help relax them after a long day can be more like a meal.

Then of course there's far more intimate experiences that would be more like a feast.

Then have them go on adorable space dates and slowly grow closer before the big reveal, and you get a very happy Kandi. This fic has everything I love and more, and I bet you'll like it just as much as I did!

Reasons why I love it: Steve in this fic is so fucking precious, and Tony is such a little shit - my favorite combo. This whole scenario they get themselves into feels very true to their characters (I bet if Tony was ever cut off by Howard, this is exactly what he would do), and I love the way it keeps escalating. Also, the timeskip is incredible, it elevates the whole fic to another level. I love it so much, please go and check it out, you won't regret it!

Reasons why I love it: Steve "The Flagellator" Rogers has my entire heart. Once again, Neb built an incredible alternate universe here, with a really cool take on how the whole Alpha/Omega dynamic works. The concept of external punishment is really neat, and I love the way it brings Steve and Tony together. Plus, the ending makes me "aww" out loud every time. I love this fic to bits, so I hope you'll give it a shot yourself!
