You’ve talked about how fandom treats jtodd & dick, so what are your thoughts on how fandom treats dick & tim?
There’s this post that’s asking about people’s batfamily hot takes, and I was scrolling through the reblogs bc I love drama. One of the “hot takes” was calling dick a bad brother bc of the bruce lost in time comic era. Specifically saying that fandom excuses dick’s shitty behavior towards Tim bc his dad (Bruce) died and because of the stress of taking care of the city by himself. While Tim was hurting because of the deaths of Kon, Bart, Jack, Steph, and Donna (idk why they included Donna as Tim’s grief and not Dick’s??) and therefore Tim’s & Dick’s hurt and stress aren’t the same. According to this person, Tim was going through it and Dick was making it worse.
Now, I’m not going to claim I know how everything went down since I haven’t read those comics yet, but this feels like a gross misunderstanding of the arc.
From what I’ve seen, fandom tends to invalidate and villainize Dick during this time in favor of Tim. Dick is not being excused, in fact he’s being blamed for things that are either not his fault or just made up in order to whump Tim. Idk that “hot take” just rubbed me the wrong way because of how one-sided it was, and I guess it made me wonder about your thoughts about Dick & Tim since I tend to agree with your opinions lmao
fundamentally the issue is this — dick grayson existing and being a good person is an obstacle for fanon angst. dick grayson being a good brother means that jtodd can’t just slot into his pre-existing relationships with tim and cass and damian. dick grayson being a good friends means that he’s close with the titans and the league because he’s competent and trusted. dick grayson being kind means that he didn’t abandon tim, he was literally trying to keep everything together after bruce’s death.
not to try and make it a grief olympics but as much as people talk about everyone tim has lost (and i think they must have been talking about dana winters in that post?) people seem to forget that dick’s city just got nuked + the fallout of nightwing 93 + donna dying + jade dying + the titans falling apart + he was just locked in arkham himself. like… his dad has just died, he’s had to fight off his brother who’d just tried to kill both tim and damian and been given custody over a kid who doesn’t trust him
red robin 2009 has done irreversible harm to tim drakes character. people using that as the starting point for reading about him is bad. it’s a comic about a grief spiral, and it isn’t an amazing depiction of him either. but even then, people just seem to love straight up fabricating what’s in it.
dick tells tim that therapy might be a good idea. tim tells dick that he’s leaving because he trusts dick to let him do what he needs to do. even at his lowest point, dick is who he trusts most. those takes that’re like “tim drake was at his lowest point and then jtodd sees him and realises that he’s cool actually and they bond #jasontoddisagoodbrother #dickgraysonisabadbrother etc” because they like to posit that dick threatened to throw tim in arkham are so silly
that’s even ignoring how people just straight up lie about damian’s actions and how weird everyone is about ra’s al ghul. no, tim isn’t the only one he refers to as detective aside from bruce. no, tim isn’t one step away from being a mass murderer. no, damian didn’t try to kill tim— he was reacting to tim being suspicious of him. tim was beefing with a ten year old. why are u being so mean to the ten year old? (We Know Why)
ur right — it is extremely one-sided. im not one to pretend that canon is flawless by any means, but acting as though fanon is better just because someone online came up with it is also stupid. there are many many racist undertones with how jtodd and tim are interpreted, both separately and with each other. a lot of it is yaoi baiting dynamics, that a lot of fans don’t seem to want to admit. i won’t comment on how white people writing jtodd as latino and tim as asian can be Bad but like…. it’s all tied up together. people want these two characters to have suffered the most, because that justifies everything fans want them to do. they want them to be wronged. they want their idea of justice in their name

donate to support this small family whose home and work has been destroyed, currently displaced in gaza ($2800 out of $15000 raised so far 5/26/24)
We are Maisara, Dana, and our child, Basil, a family from Gaza whose possessions and dreams were shattered by war. The small family that lost the warm home that brought them together, now finds itself homeless after displacement and fleeing from imminent death in the city. We managed to save ourselves, but we did not save our lovely home nor the memories!
All of that is now under the remnants of the walls due to the destructive shelling that hit our house, and now we are even unable to obtain a single memory that connects us to it. Our only dream now is to return and gather again under one roof, to ward off fear!
[...] After all this suffering that left a psychological impact on us and turned our lives upside down, we decided to seek help and support to stand again and achieve a new hopeful start to obtain a source of income that would enable us to pursue our life, find a new place to live in, and regain some of the details that have become part of the past.
We greatly appreciate the contribution of all those who want to revive our hope again and believe that we deserve better than what we have experienced during this ongoing war!

when you know every last prominent online ~leftist intellectual~ who threw Syrians under the bus out of a childish need to preserve the idea that because Asad is currently on the outs with the US he's some kind of socialist liberator vanguard-bearer* and therefore actually bought the idea that the uprising was some CIA op shit, seeing those exact same people say and write perfectly good things about Palestine is this extra dose of infuriating because my first instinct is that I want to share them, I want to pass them on, but then I see the name and I fucking refuse to amplify these people even if their broken clocks are right today.
and meanwhile on twitter people are taking images of barrel-bombed Syrian cities, bleeding and crying Syrian children, and claiming they're from Gaza or even from Israel.
I absolutely don't begrudge Palestinians a shred of rhetoric or visibility. they need it. genocide is underway. it just makes me want to throw up to watch a certain kind of online clout-chaser exploit the complete abandonment of Syrians for the umpteenth time in order to clout-chase about Palestine. and people who either understandably don't know who they are, or who do and should fucking know better but apparently don't care or even buy it, laud them for it. twelve years of these people building themselves up on the bodies of Syrians whose memories they insult out loud and implicitly, in word and image and silence, and calling themselves the left.
----
*Asad ran black sites for the CIA, tried his damnedest to get in good with the US and Europe in the 2000s and pivoted back toward Iran only when it became clear that wouldn't work, and even before his failson antics his daddy joined the US's Gulf War coalition for money and free rein to keep occupying Lebanon. and somehow it's worth building an entire alternate reality to claim that he's a pillar of anti-imperial resistance, for...what, exactly? what does anybody win except smug certainty. I fucking hate it here. I always have to soothe myself by remembering when Dana al-Kurd had the integrity to come out and admit that she used to hold this position and then realized the sheer cognitive dissonance involved and changed her mind. sucks that I have exactly that one example to go back to.

Attacks against human rights defenders and obliteration of civic space in Gaza unacceptable, says UN expert
16 September 2024
Israeli Defence Forces continue to intentionally starve and kill civilians, while human rights defenders face enormous challenges conducting their peaceful work, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Mary Lawlor said today.
In recent months the oldest human rights organisation in Gaza, the Palestinian Human Rights Centre (PCHR), has seen staff members killed and its offices damaged beyond repair in air strikes and ground attacks by the Israeli Defence Forces.
“There is literally no place left for human rights defenders and civil society actors to continue documenting the litany of human rights violations to which Israel is subjecting the people of the Gaza Strip,” the Special Rapporteur said.
Two women lawyers from the PCHR were killed in February 2024. Nour Abu al-Nour died along with her two-year-old daughter, her parents, and four siblings in an air raid on her house in Rafah on 20 February 2024. Two days later, Dana Yaghi and 37 family members were wiped out in an Israeli air raid on a house to which they had relocated for safety in Deir el-Balah, 14 km south of Gaza City.
“It is a terrible tragedy that justice for these two women human rights defenders, their family members and their children, seems so far away. Human rights defenders keep hope alive for justice through their work but are becoming victims themselves. This is why Israeli authorities seem so intent on targeting and silencing them,” she said.
The PCHR headquarters in Gaza City and branch offices in Jabalya, Khan Younis, and Rafah have all been severely damaged in air raids and ground attacks, forcing staff to relocate and rent office space and logistical support at skyrocketing prices, while some international funding has been suspended. They have also been subjected to a vitriolic online smear campaign by the Israeli group, NGO Monitor, which has falsely accused PCHR of being linked to terrorists.
“Human rights defenders have told me that they will continue their work despite this online defamation, which is targeted at drying up their international support and intimidating them,” Lawlor said.
“This organisation continues to bear witness, document and record gross human rights violations and war crimes. Many Palestinians have spoken to them on condition of anonymity. Such is their fear of Israeli repercussions if they are to be publicly identified.”
Recent media reports have highlighted Israeli surveillance of PCHR, and other Palestinian human rights organisations, including Al-Haq and Addameer in the Occupied West Bank, for much of the past decade, in relation to information they were submitting on Israeli human rights violations to the International Criminal Court.
“I repeat my call for human rights defenders to be recognised as essential in times of armed conflict, and to be protected. As independent observers, lawyers and researchers, they document and preserve evidence of violations of international humanitarian and human rights law and ensure the possibility of accountability and justice,” Lawlor said.
The physical integrity of Human Rights Defenders should be protected against attacks and harassment, unlawful killings should be promptly and independently investigated in accordance with international law, and measures adopted to protect them against future serious violations, she said.
The expert has previously raised these concerns with authorities in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territory.

New York City Hip Hop Playlist (YouTube)
Started building a unique playlist of hip hop tunes that originated from the city that gave birth to the genre in the first place: New York. Here we have a slate that begins in the party-oriented early 80s South Bronx and progresses all the way through the late 90s into a bunch of raw, underground, hot street rap fire 🔥😎.
So, if you've been following me long enough, you know that my forte with these playlists is to load up on great obscurities, and I've got a bunch here, but I've also got some classic jams as well, all of which come courtesy of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five and Melle Mel. There's shortened versions of two early hip hop cornerstones: "The Message," which was the genre's first ever lyrically conscious hit, and then the anti-cocaine anthem, "White Lines," which Grandmaster Flash actually had nothing to do with, even though Sugarhill Records slapped his name on it in order to help boost its record sales.
But speaking of anti-drug hip hop anthems, a lesser known one from around that same early 80s time period is The Funky Four's "King Heroin," which heavily interpolated The O'Jays' own "For the Love of Money," aka the theme song from The Apprentice (🎶 money, money, money, money....mon-ay! 🎶). "King Heroin" is definitely not a completely unknown song, but in comparison to "White Lines," far less people are aware of it, and in total, it has about 62,000 plays on YouTube across a handful of uploads. Fun, catchy, early hip hop gold as far as I'm concerned.
But once we hit the mid-90s, that's when we really get into some of these underheard Big Apple rap goodies, like a pair of mid-90s boom bap cuts from a Harlem native called Raucous aka Sabotage, who at some point decided to leave an oversaturated US rap market for Germany. 1995's "Say No More" has around 1,100 total plays on YouTube and the Roey Marquis II remix of "No Way Out" from 1996 has about 2,400.
And Brooklyn's own mighty Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey makes an appearance on here too, on a rare remix of N'Dea Davenport's "Bullshittin'," which I'm pretty sure was produced by the one and only J Dilla. Super chilly synth tones on this one that's approaching 20,000 YouTube plays.
And lastly, Manhattan trio Missin' Linx supplies "M.I.A.," a song whose beat very well may have been jacked by Dr. Dre himself so he could release his iconic "The Next Episode" the following year. Both songs utilize the same main sample from David McCallum's "The Edge," but according to WhoSampled, either producer VIC was the first to ever sample the song for "M.I.A.," or one of his collaborators, Godfather Don, was the first to use it for underground New York rapper Scaramanga's "Death Letter" remix. Either way, although "The Next Episode" would come to be hailed as a late 90s west coast rap classic, Dre wasn't the first to sample that McCallum song. And "M.I.A." has about 176,100 YouTube plays while "The Next Episode" has managed to rack up hundreds of millions.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible:
The Furious Five Meets the Sugarhill Gang - "Showdown" Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - "The Message" Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel - "White Lines (Don't Do It)" West Street Mob - "Mosquito" Funky Four - "King Heroin" Dana Dane - "Something Special" Nine - "Any Emcee" Raucous a; k; a Sabotage - "Say No More" Raucous a; k; a Sabotage - "No Way Out (Roey Marquis II Remix)" Smoothe Da Hustler - "Hustlers Theme" N'Dea Davenport feat. Mos Def - "Bullshittin'" D.I.T.C. - "Themes, Dreams & Schemes" Missin' Linx - "M.I.A." Mr. Supreme feat. Al' Tariq - "Run the Show"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So, we currently sit at 14 songs with a runtime of one hour so far. And maybe when I find more to add, I'll have enough songs to make a Spotify playlist too.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

Aqua Teen Hunger Force #69: “Boston” | Unaired; leaked January 31, 2015
That’s right, I’m covering it. It didn’t air on Adult Swim… in fact, it didn’t air at all. More accurately, if the leaked file is anything to go off of, it was never properly completed. What we have here is an assembly cut with a nearly-finished soundtrack (a narration in particular sounds like a temporary track, for example) and some animation that is complete or close-to-complete. Some of it is barely animated at all, with still images subbing in for animated ones. To call this “unaired’ technically bumps up against one of my pet peeves of referring to unfinished media or never-filmed scripts as “unaired”, implying that they exist in an airable state. This doesn’t seem to.
In “Boston”, Master Shake attempts to drum up publicity for his failing online auction (he’s trying to sell Meatwad) by taking Meatwad to Boston and sticking him under an overpass with harmless magnetic lights attached to him as an advertisement for himself, I guess. Frylock cheerily points out that they are “energy efficient, and harmless to humans” and praises Shake for being so thoughtful. The promotion fails, but the ghost of Paul Revere shows up and urges the Aqua Teens to visit with the Ghost of Benjamin Franklin. He buys Meatwad and files him with a kite, causing Meatwad to get struck by lightning over and over. Benjamin Franklin is notably not voiced by Dana Snyder, effectively keeping the Aqua Teen universe separate from the Saul/Young Person’s Guide universe (GOOD!).
The resulting fiery explosions from Meatwad getting zapped by lightning is mistaken for a bomb going off. The show actually cheekily goes out of it’s way to have Baltimore, NOT Boston, be the city who sees the explosions and mistake them for a bomb. Baltimore is populated by Johnny Unitas, Earl Weaver, and the cast of the musical Hairspray. The Aqua Teens are tossed out of Boston as a result.
Shake spends all of his Meatwad money on a large lite-brite with a bunch of dynamite strapped to it, and attacks Carl’s house with it. This is portrayed the same way it would be in a deadly serious drama film, with music probably lifted from Munich or something (I genuinely don’t know what the reference is if there is a specific one, sorry!). A bunch of bomb squad/swat teamers show up and shoot Carl further to death, after announcing “let’s make this worse than it already is”. They mistake Shake’s sandwich for a bomb, but then Shake explodes. Turns out Shake was a bomb. We pull out to reveal the Mooninites, dressed like Al Qaeda members, watching this on TV from a cave hide-out. Show ends with Ignignokt about to saw his own head off to intimidate his enemies.
This episode was leaked in 2015, and was supposedly being prepped for release according to Dana Snyder and Carey Means. I’m not sure if they just said that to make the leaker feel bad. Some wiki I read said that they claimed it was a week away from being released. I don’t know, I guess this theoretically could’ve been completed and released in the span of a week. Maybe they were planning to release the rough-cut as is? Who knows.
Another thing I’m not clear on is whether or not this episode was intended to be the season premiere. A lot of episode guides that list this episode seem to think so. It makes enough sense. Interestingly enough, this episode is meant to be counted for the sake of their “100th” episode, though you could reasonably count the “Deleted Scenes” special as two episodes or maybe even count the movie.
This episode is reasonably funny, and it’s a shame it never got completed. It would have been the first episode completed in the HD format, but it currently only exists as a 360p bootleg file. I’d be really curious to see how they navigated certain bits for the final broadcast version; this episode exists in an uncensored state and has some rather uncouth characters using some pretty nasty slurs by today’s standards. The only thing resembling an official release we got from this episode was the Volume 5 DVD set included bits of artwork from it on the gatefold case.

Here’s some splashback from my Rainn Wilson tirade
I share your hatred for rainn wilson. I actually think he's a real thorn in that otherwise perfect Nite Live episode. However, I like the numbers sketch. I think about "numbers just for men" a lot. It tickles me...pink!
You know, I was probably harsher on that sketch for superficial reasons. It’s a perfectly good sketch and he’s perfectly fine in it. It’s my problem, not their problem, that I see that guy’s face and it immediately makes me scowl. If I could do it all over again, I would have never listened to those Office commentary tracks. I could have done ANYTHING ELSE with my time.

My Favorite Books of 2022
I think I did decently well at reading in 2022 and the book I'm reading now, I'm not anticipating finishing before the end of the year (it's The Stand by Stephen King), so now is the best time to post about my favorite books of the year.
This year, I read 80 books. 27 of those were the manga Blue Exorcist, and I'm never sure about whether to really count those in my book count, but I am going to count them as 1 big book for the purpose of this list! So, that takes me down to like 54 books.
So, let's go through my list each month, and pick out favorite book(s) from each month! Maybe I won't have a favorite from some months...
Bold means it was a good I really enjoyed! I
I'm going to hide the list under a keep reading line because otherwise this post might be too long for some people!
January
Dune Messiah -Frank Herbert
A Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin
Memoirs and Misinformation - Dana Vachon and Jim Carrey
February
Mergers and Acquisitions - Dana Vachon
March

Babel - R.F. Kuang
Taaqtumi: An Anthology of Arctic Horror Stories - Aviaq Johnston, et al
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid
Hell Of A Book - Jason Mott
Picking an actual favorite from these is too hard. I read so many great books this year, and obviously some months I read better than others. Actually, I would probably bold more than I have, but I felt bad about bolding more than like 2 per month, though I did do that in like September.
There were only really like 5 or 6 that I didn't really like, but pushed my way through.
I'm quietly aiming for 100 books next year, but I'm not gonna force myself for that, because whenever I aim for goals like that, it just takes the fun out of reading, so I'm going to set my goal at like 5 books and anything more than that is going to be a win for me!
