A Silence Not Golden - 1987 newspaper article on deaf queer life in San Francisco

This newspaper article from the Bay Area Reporter is written about the sub-community within the large gay community of San Francisco- the deaf gay community. Some deaf individuals interviewed chose not to identify as handicapped or with a disability, while others feel that the hearing community makes them feel handicapped. For example, one man was rejected by one of the major AIDS organizations at the time due to the cost of hiring an interpreter for him. The gay deaf community San Francisco made them feel more welcomed and supported, but the intersections of being unaccommodated for by the gay hearing world were always present. The article highlights the organization Rainbow Deaf Society, which is run by and for the gay deaf community and supports individuals with AIDS as well as spreads accurate information on contracting and living with AIDS. The hearing gay community did not put their money, welfare, or resources towards the deaf community, which lead to significant struggles in the deaf gay community during the ongoing AIDS crisis. Deaf gays did not have the same access to support, counseling, or resources for living with nor preventing AIDS. Significant contributors like the Rainbow Deaf Society led to San Francisco holding increasing political strength and presence for the deaf gay community due to the creation of their own support and community resources.

Okay, we already know that Richie’s fear was people finding out he was gay. It probably also had to do with the stigma around it at that time. During the 80’s AIDS was huge and everyone saw gay people as disgusting, Richie was terrified of being seen as disgusting and unlovable. He was probably terrified of Eddie finding out because Eddie was such a germaphobe. Eddie was probably also a bug germaphobe during that time because HE felt unclean because he also knew he was gay and felt sick.

I wrote “My Government Means to Kill Me,” a novel about a 🏳️🌈 Black man coming of age in NYC in the midst of the AIDS epidemic, in part because we lost so many amazing artists to AIDS and so many stories were left untold.
For World AIDS Day, I wanted to celebrate the lives and incredible work of talented 🏳️🌈 writers that we lost too soon.
