"The first new treatment for asthma attacks in 50 years has been tested by British scientists.

The injection is more effective than the current method of steroid tablets—reducing the need for further treatment by 30%, according to a new study.

Researchers say their findings could be “game-changing” for millions of people around the world with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—especially because the drug is already available on the market.

Asthma attacks and COPD flare-ups, also known as “eosinophilic exacerbations”, can be deadly—with dozens of people dying every day in the UK after experiencing serious symptom flare-ups, according to official figures.

These exacerbations include symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness due to inflammation resulting from high amounts of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell—and they involve almost half of asthma attacks and up to 30% of COPD flare-ups.

Yet medical treatments have barely changed for over half a century, as steroid drugs remained the mainstay of medication.

The downside of steroids like prednisolone, which can reduce inflammation in the lungs, is that they have severe side-effects, such as diabetes and osteoporosis. The treatment also fails many patients who need repeated courses of steroids, or get worse and need hospitalization within 90 days.

Results from the recent clinical trial led by scientists from King’s College London revealed that a drug already available can be re-purposed in emergency settings to reduce the need for further treatment.

“This could be a game-changer for people with asthma and COPD,” said lead investigator Professor Mona Bafadhel, of King’s College.

The team studied Benralizamab, a monoclonal antibody that targets eosinophils to reduce lung inflammation, which is currently used for the treatment of severe asthma—and the trial found a single dose can be four times more effective when injected at the point of exacerbation compared to steroid tablets.

The study, which was published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, split people at high risk of an asthma or COPD attack into three groups. One group received benralizumab injection and dummy tablets, another received standard of care (prednisolone 30mg daily for five days) and dummy injection and the third group receiving both benralizumab injection and standard of care.

After 28 days, respiratory symptoms—like coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness—were reduced with benralizumab.

After 90 days, there were four times fewer people in the benralizumab group that failed treatment compared to standard of care with prednisolone.

Treatment with the benralizumab injection also led to fewer follow-up episodes that required seeing a doctor or going to a hospital. There was also an improvement in the quality of life for people with asthma and COPD.

“We’ve used the drug in a different way – at the point of an exacerbation – to show that it’s more effective than steroid tablets which is the only treatment currently available,” said Prof. Bafadhel.

“The big advance is the finding that targeted therapy works in asthma and COPD attacks.”

The researchers say the jab can potentially be administered safely at home, too.

“We hope these pivotal studies will change how asthma and COPD exacerbations are treated for the future, ultimately improving the health for over a billion people living with asthma and COPD across the world,” she added...

77-year-old patient Geoffrey Pointing, who took part of the study, called the injections “fantastic”.

“I didn’t get any side effects like I used to with the steroid tablets. I used to never sleep well the first night of taking steroids, but the first day on the study, I could sleep that first night, and I was able to carry on with my life without problems.”

Reminder to get your COVID booster when they're available. I kept putting off my next dose because of my schedule, and I've been out with COVID for eight days now.

Posting the symptoms I had to inform others as COVID is constantly evolving:

Day 1 (3 or 4 days after exposure): started as a feeling of "imminent sickness" in the back of my throat. I otherwise felt 100%.

Day 2: Extremely tired. Congestion. Limited all contact.

Day 3: 101 Fever. Congestion. Extremely tired. Couldn't make it through lecturing my class (remotely). Began medicating with Theraflu (acetaminophen). Tested positive for COVID with the fastest and clearest positive test I've ever seen.

Day 4: Fever between 99 and 101.5. Cancelled all activity. Spent all day in bed. Extreme congestion. Extreme aches & chills at night. This day was absolutely miserable. My friend brought me soup. I cried about it. Continued with Theraflu. Considered going to the ER due to severity of symptoms.

Day 5: Intermittent low-grade fever at 99.8. Congestion continued, coughing and sneezing began.

Day 6: Fever cleared. Coughing & sneezing intensified. Tested again as per CDC recommendations: still a strong positive. Began taking Robitussin (cough syrup only, no acetaminophen).

Day 7: Coughing worsened significantly. Lots of liquids, lots of Robitussin.

Day 8: Today! No fever, no cough, some slight congestion remains. Once again tested positive for COVID-- with a weaker positive this time! I expect I'll be back to normal by day 10, but... trust me, if you're going to get your "booster" through a needle or ten days of this, choose the booster! So you’re like, fuck it, stops the process anyways on the wolfman, his ex boyfriend shoots him in the chest, he cocoons himself in a weird sphere, his boyfriend rejects him again, then he’s like fine whatever use the blood. Then he ascends to godhood, you use leftover parts to bring your daughter back to life, and later find out that while in the hivemind his on-again off-again boyfriend told him they were soulmates, and they blipped out of existence.

It’s like what if the kid you babysat one time came back when they were an adult with like, ten college degrees and a co-ceo of apple, bought your own brand of weed, and then half a year later became Jesus.

So, one of my best friends (who I have talked about before on here, actually) is back in hospital. And it's quite serious this time, because she's going to have to go through chemotherapy. There's a good chance she'll be in hospital over Christmas, too.

I want to do something for her. I bought her a funko pop thing but I want to do something with actual meaning. (I mean yes her Aunt got her this FANTASTIC Christmas card that made me scream with both shock and delight on her behalf bc holy shit but I want to do something from me, too).

I want to make a scrapbook or a notebook or something, of messages and photos and art from all over. I want her to know she is loved by more than just the hospital staff.

She loves Frankenstein, and her absolute favourite artist is Brightgoat. If we could get a message for her, from Brightgoat, that would be incredible and it would get her so, so excited.

What type of flower (weed) do you think Feng Xin would give Mu Qing as an apology gift whenever he pissed the other man off? I'm leaning towards common sowthistle, which is a native plant in China. It's obviously a thistle, but also looks like a dandelion, and is so very obviously not a flower to be giving in a bouquet (it's a thistle), that the concept of Feng Xin finding it on the side of the road and thinking, "Yes, this flower will make Mu Qing forgive me!" and then ripping a huge stalk from the ground with chunks of mud still caked to the roots (and covered in blood now because he absolutely shredded his hands in the processes) and returning to Mu Qing with his gift much like a cat proudly showing off its kill to its master is so fucking funny and yea okay I've convinced myself. This is good news for those who have lung issues due to Covid. I looked up what pulmonary sequelae refers to. Here is what I found. "The pulmonary sequelae of COVID-19 include thromboembolic disease, with thrombi and microvascular thrombi identified in the pulmonary vasculature; further work is needed to define the underlying mechanisms of chronic vascular disease after COVID-19 to inform diagnostic and therapeutic approaches."

I know someone with Interstitial lung disease acquired after a Covid infection and so this is great news. Here is a link to this disease.

Because I’ve worked for my current org for a couple of years now and I’m nosy about the work my colleagues do, I knew that when we get calls from people who have recently lost a loved one, they often want someone to talk to as much as they want someone to help them with practical matters. Usually a colleague handles those calls because he runs the memorial program, but he’s on a fundraising trip, so I said I’d cover his desk, metaphorically, while he was away. 

So I had my first grieving-partner call today. 

He called to set up the memorial page for his wife, but we ended up chatting for about 20 minutes, or rather he spoke a lot and I mostly listened. I’m not the most empathetic person in the world, but when someone is that fresh from grief and talking to a stranger they don’t usually want much more than sympathetic silence in any case. 

He just wanted to tell me about his wife, about how interesting and accomplished she was and how she died, and that he was glad their children got to say goodbye. He kept apologizing for welling up when he spoke, and I think genuinely it was helpful for him to hear from me that it was fine and natural to cry, and that I’d be on the phone with him for as long as needed. They were married for sixty-one years and she died less than a week ago, so fuck, I’d cry too. I wouldn’t be able to make a phone call for the crying, probably. 

I took his info and let him know we’d track donations and send him updates, subtly made sure he had someone else there with him (”So are your kids still in town?”  “Yeah, they’re staying here with me.”) and eventually he talked himself out and we ended the call. 

When you work in a job where death is nearly always tangential, you develop a certain thickness of skin, but I’m glad I don’t normally work in the memorial program. I don’t know if I could take calls like that on a weekly basis. I’m fine, I’m not fucked up over it or anything -- it actually felt good to help someone out like that -- but it’s definitely a real pause in the day. 

Anyway, life is short and uncertain, so tell your loved ones you love them.
