Hobie actually being Mayday's go-to babysitter. Peter might find his behavior questionable but he's one of the only ones who knows how to hold a baby and Mayday loves him.
Imagine Hobie trying to a slightly older toddler Mayday her ABC's with homemade flashcards
"A is for..."
"Anarchy !"
"Or ?"
"ACAB !"
"Which is a ?"
"Acronym !"
"Which means ?'
"All cops are bastards !"
"Good job little anarchist !"
Which might get his babysitter privileges restricted depending on what he teaches her but in his words "It's never too early to learn that all cops are bastards, capitalism is a black hole out to swallow us all and its always justifiable to punch a nazi in the throat."

5 years of linghxr 🎂
Today marks 5 years of linghxr! Well, technically Tumblr notified me of my blog’s anniversary 2 days ago. But I didn’t make my first post until July 12th, so I’ve decided to celebrate today instead.
I started learning Mandarin Chinese as a little kid attending weekend Chinese school, and I also took it in high school. I got 认真 about it in college after realizing my Chinese wasn’t even good enough to test out of the 1st year Chinese course. I spent all my free time studying the Chinese Grammar Wiki and successfully placed into 2nd year Chinese!
I started this blog the following summer as I tried not to forget everything before the 3rd year Chinese course, while also studying Russian. Over the past 5-6 years, I have…
…read 3 webnovels and 1 book
…watched 17 cdramas and 25 seasons of variety/reality shows
…posted 282 times on this blog
…made 8313 flashcards in Anki
07/20/24 The contest is closed, and I have contacted the winner.
To give back to the langblr community, I am gifting winner’s choice of prize from two resources/platforms I have used myself. They are both digital to make this more accessible.
Prizes
The lucky winner can pick one of these options:
Option 1 - iTalki gift card for $60 of iTalki credits
Option 2 - Pleco Pro Bundle worth $59.99 (see under the cut for bundle content)
Requirements to enter
To enter, all you need to do is like, reblog, or comment on this post. You can do more than one if you like, but please don’t spam the post. Feel free to vote in the poll too, but that’s just for fun 😄
You have one week (until next Friday, July 19th) to enter. Shortly after, I will select a winner at random and message them to coordinate details (make sure your Tumblr settings allow me to message you). If there is no response after 48 hours, I will select someone else. If you are under 18, please get parent or guardian permission.
Thank you for 5 wonderful years of blogging!
Via Pleco, the pro bundle includes:
Our more expensive bundle includes almost every "feature" add-on plus 6 different dictionaries; two English-to-Chinese ones (one smaller one with Pinyin and one larger one without), the massive ABC Chinese-to-English, the bidirectional Oxford Chinese Dictionary, the small-but-example-rich Tuttle Chinese-English, and (to stretch your reading skills a bit) the Chinese-to-Chinese Guifan dictionary.
Bundle contents:
ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary ($19.99)
ABC English-Chinese Dictionary ($9.99)
Xiandai Hanyu Guifan Cidian ($29.99)
New Century English-Chinese Dictionary ($29.99)
Oxford Chinese Dictionary ($19.99)
Tuttle Learner's Chinese-English Dictionary ($9.99)

Daily Check-in: April 15, 2024 🎀
I know I said I was switching themes, but I didn't get any good pictures yesterday so the theme switch will occur once I learn how to take pictures that I find acceptable!
Anywho, Monday started off good, then got bad, and I'm hoping Tuesday will be better. Got a lot done, but got off work super late. Anxious about lots of job and financial stuff. It's hard being a girl in this economy.
🩷 What I Accomplished:

Listened to 2 spanish podcast episodes of ABC la Productividad
studied through some Spanish flashcards

shipped off the shoes I sold on depop
🩷 Good Things That Happened:

cleaned my station at work extra good (detailed the stainless steel, cleaned out some fridges, scrubbed my floors, etc)
my friend got a 2nd coffee for free at work and gave it to me (iced Caramel macchiato for the win!)
🩷 What Could've Been Better:
my boyfriend and I are having major issues and I'm struggling emotionally at the moment
went to bed super late because of work

First thing first · kana
(。•̀ᴗ-)✧ essential
It is a must, before you begin your journey in studying japanese, to be fully able to read, understand and write hiragana and katakana.
In my post I would hardly use romanji, since I think they're counterproductive. Even though my blog is beginner friendly (as myself!) I think it's essential to know how to read and write these two alphabets.
What is kana
Kana is essentially the Japanese alphabet. Each kana character represents one syllable. There are two sets of kana, which means there are two different Japanese scripts based on syllabaries: hiragana (ひらがな) and katakana (カタカナ). Both hiragana and katakana were originally derived from kanji characters. Hiragana and katakana are literally the ABCs of Japanese. They're the most basic types of Japanese characters and essential parts of the Japanese language. Learning these two types of characters is often the very first step to learning Japanese, too.
Why not romanji?
Romanization can indeed make one's learning process less effective. When you rely heavily on romanji, your brain tends to lean on the Latin alphabet that you're already familiar with, potentially hindering your ability to fully grasp hiragana and katakana. That's why I encourage minimizing the use of romanji in your studies, except when it's absolutely necessary. Making a conscious effort to read and engage with kana is a more fruitful approach.
Hiragana
Hiragana is the first writing system learned by Japanese children, and thus is often the recommended system for non-Japanese to learn first, as well.
Katakana
Katakana may not be used as extensively as hiragana, but it provides an interesting advantage to English speakers. Gairaigo (外来語), or borrowed words, is primarily written in katakana so katakana characters are mainly used to write foreign names, corporate branding, western loanwords and onomatopoeic words.
Free resources
JOSHU - interactive tables, stroke order, audio, flashcards, practice sheets, practice quizzes.
Japanese Pod 101 - Kana eBook, video lesson (try 10 Days Hiragana Challenge and 10 Days Katakana Challenge) plus Learn Hiragana in 1 hour and Learn Katakana in 1 hour
Tofugu - I really reccomend check this article out, becaus it's a more in depth article with tons of other possible useful resoures!
App - there are several apps for iOS/Android, such as: Dr. Moku, Hiragana/Katakana Memory Hint, Write it! Japanese (and many more...)
Writing and Reading practice - I personally recommend this video from this playlist (also useful) for the reading practice and this one for the writing.
The Best Method?
There isn't, in fact, a "best method" to learn kana. As every other thing, you need to learn at your own pace and with the method that best suits you. My method was just writing kana endlessly and repetition, trying to hear words and write them and/or read them (as the last point of the free resources). But everyone is different, so I recommend to try different methods out! Don't hesitate to ask question, recommend other resources or simply interact!

how do i learn to read like you do it's amazing
aww i keep getting so many nice asks i can't even answer them all without spamming up the dash so i have a little collection going now. y'all are sweet. i dunno dude my brain just does this. i just wake up and say shit and you guys like it. i like this post as an articulation of what i do when i'm having book opinions. it is abt analyzing media analysis vs analyzing books themselves but it does work as a useful checklist for making your own analysis. i'm tragically incompetent at explaining my reading process in a useful way because it's not so much something i consciously built up so much as it is just. me saying shit. but the main things i did while reading worm were
- shuffles flashcards. uh. taking notes? i don't take traditional notes for anything but my version of taking notes is immediately shouting any and all thoughts i have in my book nook discord channel, causing them to immediately become at least 50% more coherent in the process. doing some form of jotting down which details you found most relevant and or interesting + your Thoughts is a good way to start figuring out what you actually think and piecing together details that support it instead of just keeping everything swirling around in your brain. every alec essay i've made stems from thoughts that were generated via a series of inane rambles on discord. and u would not believe how many taylorposts i get notes for are just shit i said at 5 am and cleaned up for tumblr
- make sure you like. haven't Lost The Fucking Plot while you're reading. i occasionally stop while reading to make sure in my head that i could accurately explain what's happening wrt plot and/or character developments to another person, and if there's something i don't either Get or feel like i'm in the successful Process of getting, then i sit there and rotate it in my mind until i've caught the fucking plot again. when i was reading the end arc of worm i did a lot of stopping and staring into space while i shuffled the details around in my head like a jigsaw puzzle to decide what i thought was happening and how i felt about it
- lookit what other ppl are saying and decide if you agree or disagree and then figure out Why. ask for opinions from other ppl even. most of my more detailed wormthoughts stemmed from seeing other ppls posts and thinking "i agree with all of this except this part, which i think could be extended further because xyz" or "i disagree with this entirely because abc" or "oh this is fully true actually. my opinion now." power of book club lets u add patch notes to your own worm thoughts by having more details & theories 2 consider and shape into the most defensible position
also i recommend entering autistic fugue states all of my best posts are made in autistic fugue states

MY TAB Today's Activity Board with Dangler for Kids to Schedule their Daily Activities
Regardless of age, all children benefit from routine, even everyday situations. Kids benefit from having a regular plan because it provides structure, makes them feel rooted, and imparts crucial time management skills. Nevertheless, COVID-19 has destroyed any notion of what is "normal." Many parents, including ourselves, have been left wondering how to effectively occupy the time for children who have been disrupted from their regular school-year routine in the face of extraordinary stay-at-home orders and school cancellations.
We're sharing a daily plan for kids that many Nurture Life parents follow as we adjust to sheltering in place to help you develop a sense of normalcy and comfort at home. It takes a village to raise a child, and now more than ever, we want to collaborate with you to keep all of our kids safe, healthy, and happy.
Ten Tips for Helping Kids in Your Family Get Used to a Daily Schedule
1. Continue with current routines as Much as You Can-
You'll have better success with SpeechGears MY TAB(Today's Activity Board) for daily activity schedule if it has some continuity with your regular schedule because kids benefit from regularity. Try to maintain the routine that your children are accustomed to for the essential things, such as wake-up time, mealtimes, and bedtime.
2. Set a Priority list for Your "must-do" Tasks-
Despite the fact that the world is changing rapidly around us, we still have tasks to complete. As a result, priorities and list these tasks! If you will be on a conference call every day at 9 a.m. or if your older child has an assignment due at 5 p.m. and you are unable to help with your younger child, try to schedule solo play during these hours. You could put your baby in a bouncer, let your toddler make a fort in the playpen, or start your child's favourite educational programme.
3. Make Your Children's Daily Schedule Specific-
SpeechGears children's todays activity board is divided into two primary columns: activities and examples. This allows you a tonne of freedom; you can even use the same broad plan for kids of various ages, filling across multiple example activities for each child.
For instance, depending on your child's age and interests, the general activity we refer to as "learning fun" can imply nearly anything:
Babies rolling around on the activity mat, playing peek-a-boo, reading aloud from a book, building with blocks
Young children can practise their coordination by threading beads, matching shapes, playing ABC or number flashcard games, stacking blocks, and playing with colors.
For children in grade school, try science experiments, innovation time, constructing with balsa wood or popsicle sticks, music lessons on YouTube, and math games.
4. Try to maintain a Daily Balance with Educational Tools For Special Needs Children
We all adore our children, but a constant state of lockdown can cause irritability and cabin fever. Making your days more varied will help keep things interesting. Even if you don't have to keep the activities in the same sequence we do, make an effort to keep your child's routine balanced:
Physical vs mental exercise
Family time versus private time
Focused education versus foolish play
Outdoor versus indoor activities
5. Display the Calendar Somewhere Your Children Can See It
Place your new routine board where your kids can easily see it, and that is kid-friendly, such as a large, stickered-out board in the kitchen or a bright chart in the living room. Then, rather than relying on you to inform them what's coming up, you may give them the "big kid" task of checking the schedule. It's best if you can encourage more independence!
6. Discuss the daily schedule with your children
When your kids are on day learning board, things run more smoothly. Instead of making a timetable and expecting your children to follow my tab, discuss it with them. To learn how your children are adjusting and feeling, explain why it's important, get their opinions, and keep checking in.

Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma (2021)
Topaz Jones’ 2021 short film Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma is a genre-defying piece that blends music, documentary, and experimental filmmaking. Inspired by the 1970s "Black ABCs," a set of educational flashcards designed to teach Black children about their culture and history, Jones’ film revisits this concept with a modern twist. Through 26 different "letters," each representing an aspect of Black life, the film explores themes of identity, education, and Black life in America. The combination of music, personal stories, and vibrant visuals creates a unique viewing experience that speaks directly to the complexities of growing up Black in this country.
The film is structured like the alphabet, with each letter standing for a word or concept related to Black culture. "A" for "Afro" and "N" for "Nigger." Each letter becomes a chapter that dives into an aspect of Black identity, ranging from serious social commentary to more lighthearted reflections on things like fashion or slang. This piece-by-piece like structure allows Jones to mix history, personal experiences, and creative visual elements in a way that feels fresh and experimental.
Visually, the film is a mix of old and new. Using 16mm film for some parts, giving it a retro, grainy feel that ties back to the historical roots of the Black ABCs, while other segments are shot with more modern equipment. This combination of styles makes each chapter feel distinct but still somewhat uniform. The editing is almost surreal, with images blending into one another in a way that feels almost dreamlike, or AI. This visual style reflects the film’s theme of Black identity being complex and multifaceted.
The music is also a key part of the film. Topaz Jones’ songs combine hip-hop, funk, and soul, fitting the film's narrative. The lyrics often reflect the themes of each segment, acting as another layer of storytelling. In this way, the music doesn’t just accompany the visuals—it helps shape them.
Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma is told from a Black perspective, our perspective. It is unapologetic in its depiction of Black culture and the struggles that come with living in a society where systemic racism is still a reality. The film doesn’t explain or soften its message for a non-Black audience, which is part of what makes it so powerful. It assumes the viewer is either familiar with these issues or willing to engage with them without being spoon-fed. This is crucial to the film’s authenticity and its refusal to dilute its message for mainstream appeal.
Historically, the Black ABCs were a tool to help Black children learn about themselves and their culture in a world that often denied them that opportunity. Jones builds on this idea, using the alphabet structure to explore how Black children—and Black people in general—navigate a world that often marginalizes them. The film addresses the importance of cultural education and the ways Black communities pass down knowledge, not just in schools, but through families, art, and everyday life.
Jones uses experimental techniques to break away from traditional filmmaking. The film is non-linear and doesn’t follow a typical plot, which can be disorienting, but this style fits with the themes Jones is exploring. Black identity isn’t something that can be neatly categorized or told in a straightforward way. By using a mix of personal stories, surreal imagery, and historical footage, the film reflects the idea that identity is layered and constantly evolving.
One of the most striking artistic choices is the way the film balances moments of pain and joy. While Jones touches on heavy topics like racism and the impact of police violence on Black communities, there are also moments of celebration—of Black culture, music, and style. This balance creates an emotional minefield for viewers, making it easy to become engulfed.
Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma is a powerful and thought-provoking film that pushes the boundaries of traditional storytelling. By using the alphabet as a framing device, Jones brings together history, personal experience, and artistic expression in a way that feels fresh and innovative, but all so simple at the same time.
Moreover, the film embraces what it means to be a Black film. It doesn’t conform to the expectations of a mainstream, white audience. Instead, it unapologetically centers Black life, culture, and language, making it clear that Black filmmakers like Jones are not just telling stories—they are reclaiming and redefining what it means to make "Black films." Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma is a Black film because it speaks directly to the Black community, reflects the complexities of Black identity, and challenges the negative connotations attached to the language and culture often misunderstood or vilified by the dominant culture.
Rating: 9/10
A creative and bold exploration of Black identity that successfully blends music (I love music), history, and personal narrative into an unforgettable film experience. I also just love 16mm!
