Day 14 of my Hair Journal was painting during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI).
I reached out to Professor Wayne Quilliam who specialized in photography of Aboriginal people (who works with the Aboriginal people and gets permission to photograph them) and he gave me permission to reference his photography for my portrait.
https://aboriginal.photography/
For the background, I referenced the traditional Aboriginal Dot Painting.
I always find it so interesting to paint people from all over the world. Though I bet traveling and doing it in person would be far more interesting than from my little Hobbit Hole.
Still... I really enjoyed it.

saw u had girl dad! tim inspo, what abt a him taking her to a daddy/daughter dance??
Now here’s the thing, the whole time leading up to the dance, Tim is a little uncomfortable with the whole thing. The thought of spending a whole evening with a bunch of middle aged dads and their tiny princesses? Not his ideal Saturday evening. But Jade is so excited. She hasn’t shut up about it since she found out what a daddy daughter dance *was*.
“Me and my daddy are going to a special dinner this weekend!” She’s told just about everyone.
“We’re going to wear fancy clothes like in mommy and daddy’s wedding pictures!”
The night of, Lucy teases him as he fidgets with the suit jacket.
“I can’t believe I’m wearing a tux to hang out with 20 5 year olds…”
“Yes but think about how excited *your* 5 year old is about this! She’s been so mad at us for not inviting her to our ‘fancy party’ for years.”
Tim softens a bit at that. Jade loved his and Lucy’s wedding photos, and threw a fit when she found out she hadn’t been invited—even though she wouldn’t be born for another year or so.
“And she looks *super* cute.” It’s as if the word ‘cute’ spawns the girl.
“Daddy!! Look at me in my dress!” Jade twirls around in her qipao inspired toddler dress; it was in a light blue with navy blossoms covering it. A matching blue to his tie. He smiled; he couldn’t help it. She did look super cute. Like someone put Lucy in the dryer.
“Ooh! Okay let me get a picture!” Lucy pushes them in front of the fireplace, the wedding picture above them.
Tim picks Jade up, and presses a raspberry to her cheek and she squeals, “you look beautiful, Bug.”
“Thank you daddy!” Jade giggles.
Lucy snaps a few pictures before Tim insists it’s time to leave, but Jade insists herself on seeing one of the pictures.
She gasps. “LOOK!” She points at the last one taken. Then she points to the picture above the hearth.
“Just like Mama and Daddy.”

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, I’ve decided to make a long-post about the white-washing of Minhkhoa Khan aka the Ghost-maker.
To start I want to establish Khoa’s probable(it has not been said is in detail yet) race/ethnic background. Being from Singapore It’s very likely he’s Chinese, Malaysian, or Indian, as those are the most common ethnic groups in Singapore. Khoa’s last name ‘Khan’ is mostly a middle eastern(only in certian parts of the middle east)/east Asian name(I’m sure you can think of one guy in particular with this last name).
Anyway ethnic background aside, it’s been well-established that Ghost-maker is brown.
Tumblr media
Here he is in batman v.3 109
Tumblr media Tumblr media
batman v.3 106 (ft. bruce for white guy reference)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
batman 2021 annual
Tumblr media
batman: the knight #4 (again ft bruce for white guy reference)
Point being: he’s not white
So then it’s a little off to get hit with this face reveal in Batman Incorporated #7
Tumblr media
Now does he look like a white guy? Not necessarily, he could be a lighter skinned Asian person, but I don’t appreciate the deviation from his earlier depictions as being darker. Colorism is a big deal, especially in Asia right now. Pale skin is seen as much more beautiful than dark skin, and this has led to many people doing things such as skin bleaching to achieve lighter skin tones. With this being the current state of things, it’s so important to have visibility for darker Asian people in media, and for this reason it comes across as a shitty move for dc to white-wash Minhkhoa.
Additionally dc had this alternate cover for batman inc #8, because they’re so good at diversity and totally didn’t just whitewash this guy :)
Tumblr media
(btw not saying dc did any of this on purpose/with malicious intent, but rather that regardless of intention this was bad and they should fix it)
tldr: dc white-washed ghost-maker despite him being previously portrayed as much darker-skinned

"Mommy, Mason laughed at me because I got a bad grade on my math test. And then he called me some mean names."
Lucy froze. She knew exactly what those mean names were. Had been called the same ones as a child. She glanced at Tim. Her second grader, her Lucy-clone as Tim called their daughter, held tightly to a crumpled up piece of paper. Lucy knew what was on it, knew she'd need to work with her daughter on fractions a bit more. But fractions weren't the issue. And neither was a bad test score. Some little snot named Mason was.
"Baby, daddy never got straight A's." Tim said as a way of bringing levity to the situation.
Their daughter rolled her eyes. "Daddy, please. You're not like me and mommy." She sassed him as her mom often did. "We're Chinese." Lucy gasped at the advanced humor coming out of her daughter's tiny body.
Tim forced back a laugh. Had his daughter just - nevermind. He gave Lucy a look as if to say your child.
Lucy glared at her husband. "Mommy didn't get straight A's either. In fact, mommy nearly got kicked out of college for failing a psych class. Your grandma was so upset." Lucy confessed to her baby. Tim raised a brow. He always chided Lucy for being a little nerdy. So this was news to him.
"But mommy's really smart." The second grader said matter-of-factly, pointing to her own temple for emphasis. "A head doctor."
"She is." Tim affirmed. "She's the smartest person I know. And the most beautiful." He kissed Lucy on the lips.
Their daughter covered her face. "Ewwwwwww. Mommy daddy kissy."
Lucy picked her seven year old up, set her on her hip, and she and Tim began attacking their daughter's baby cheeks with raspberry kisses.
"Mommy! Daddy!" Their daughter squealed in delight.
"Mommy's gonna have a chat with your principal tomorrow about stereotypes. Then mommy's gonna kick Mason's mommy's Malibu Barbie butt." Lucy tickled her daughter's belly, causing the child to shriek joyously.
"Mommy's the best!"
"Only for you, your brother, and sissy." Lucy nuzzled against her daughter's cheek that was still covered in traces of Tim's kisses.
"And daddy too!"
Lucy smiled. Leaned into Tim whose arms circled around his girls. "And daddy too."

Wind down sleepytime sketches of Nomura, Mary, and Cayden, who are dressed in traditional clothing from their respective cultures and are ready to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
Nomura (Japanese) is dressed in a kimono.
Mary (Chinese) is dressed in a qipao.
Cayden (Vietnamese) is dressed in an ao dai that's actually a bit short for them. (Their dad got them one in the men's design after they came out to him.)

Been seeing some gifs from this IG story but they didn’t capture Mel exclaiming very loudly and clearly to Eric, ‘WHERE ARE MY CHOPSTICKS?!’ I thought her comment was cute, chopsticks are a huge part of her culture, and this was one of the main parts of Meleric's exchange, so I thought it important that this doesn't get left out of the caption. Culture is cool and it's cool to see them both engaging with it and talking about it. 🥢
Soooo I made my own gif. With chopsticks. It's the first gif I ever made and I made two versions. Feel free to use :)
