"Mommy, Mason laughed at me because I got a bad grade on my math test. And then he called me some mean names."
Lucy froze. She knew exactly what those mean names were. Had been called the same ones as a child. She glanced at Tim. Her second grader, her Lucy-clone as Tim called their daughter, held tightly to a crumpled up piece of paper. Lucy knew what was on it, knew she'd need to work with her daughter on fractions a bit more. But fractions weren't the issue. And neither was a bad test score. Some little snot named Mason was.
"Baby, daddy never got straight A's." Tim said as a way of bringing levity to the situation.
Their daughter rolled her eyes. "Daddy, please. You're not like me and mommy." She sassed him as her mom often did. "We're Chinese." Lucy gasped at the advanced humor coming out of her daughter's tiny body.
Tim forced back a laugh. Had his daughter just - nevermind. He gave Lucy a look as if to say your child.
Lucy glared at her husband. "Mommy didn't get straight A's either. In fact, mommy nearly got kicked out of college for failing a psych class. Your grandma was so upset." Lucy confessed to her baby. Tim raised a brow. He always chided Lucy for being a little nerdy. So this was news to him.
"But mommy's really smart." The second grader said matter-of-factly, pointing to her own temple for emphasis. "A head doctor."
"She is." Tim affirmed. "She's the smartest person I know. And the most beautiful." He kissed Lucy on the lips.
Their daughter covered her face. "Ewwwwwww. Mommy daddy kissy."
Lucy picked her seven year old up, set her on her hip, and she and Tim began attacking their daughter's baby cheeks with raspberry kisses.
"Mommy! Daddy!" Their daughter squealed in delight.
"Mommy's gonna have a chat with your principal tomorrow about stereotypes. Then mommy's gonna kick Mason's mommy's Malibu Barbie butt." Lucy tickled her daughter's belly, causing the child to shriek joyously.
"Mommy's the best!"
"Only for you, your brother, and sissy." Lucy nuzzled against her daughter's cheek that was still covered in traces of Tim's kisses.
"And daddy too!"
Lucy smiled. Leaned into Tim whose arms circled around his girls. "And daddy too."

once tim meets lucy’s parents it's all gonna click for him why she got so defensive about his belief in her taking the detectives exam.

i saw your tags on the "nolan breaking up with lucy vs tim breaking up with lucy" gifset and you are so right, i forgot how she was pissed at nolan for letting go so easily while she had been struggling with it. talk about a gut punch. my heart is breaking for her.
Yep, that was one of the first thing i thought of when I saw the promo with Lucy being distressed at how easily it was for Tim to let go of her, of them. That was pretty much what set her off with Nolan back then. Not his decision to break up with her : after all, she had come to the same conclusion. But how it came so easily to him : "you just ripped off the Band-Aid like it was no big deal". Only, this time, it's so much worse because she was all-in. And she didn't see it coming at all. Remember, she was joking about grandkids on their second first date and all.
But it gets worse… You can add Emmett to that list. I mean, the guy couldn't even be bothered to do it in person. And we saw how upset that made her : she wanted to know why. And there's also her cheating ex-boyfriend who clearly didn't even wait to break up with her before moving on. It doesn't matter that she wasn't entirely committed : that still hurts. Not as much as Tim breaking up with her, of course. But it probably is rubbing on those old wounds : with one notable exception, she has always been discarded as if she meant nothing. And that's what breaks my heart. Because she was completely blindsided and never expected it. That's why I'm really hoping we get to see how it is going to affect her. I want to see her upset and angry… and I want to see her heal and build her confidence back.

Hello! I’ve finally posted the next chapter of my story.
Here’s a preview of one of the segments.
Friday morning, as the girls were loading themselves into the car to go to camp, Tim rolled the garbage cans out to the curb just like Angela had instructed him to do. However, as he turned to go back into the garage, he noticed something unexpected and strange.
There was a large camper van parked on the street in front of Angela’s house that he had never noticed there before. The door opened right as he turned to go back. Tim took a double take as he saw a man he easily recognized step out of the van with two bags of trash in his hands.
“Smitty?” he asked, his voice much higher than normal. “What in the world are you doing here?’
“Bradford,” he said, not at all surprised to see him there. “I sneak my trash into Lopez’ garbage cans on her garbage day. She always has extra room because that husband of hers loooooves recycling,” he said with a Cheshire grin. “I’ll just save the planet by cleaning up every once in a while,” he said with nod that reiterated to Tim that he should never, ever step foot in that van.
After depositing the trash bags, he winked at Tim. “Hashtag van life, baby,” he said as he crossed two fingers on each hand to make a hashtag symbol.
Tim shook his head. Some things never change, he thought to himself. But there was room for his trash in Angela’s bin, so he decided not to fight it.
As Smitty walked back to his van, he turned to Tim. “Hey, good luck tonight, Bradford. I hope everything works out between the two of you. I lost a lot of money when you two didn’t get together. Well, the whole station did, really. Everyone except for that prick Primm. I don’t know who stuck a stick up his ass, but that guy was the biggest jerk. At least that’s one good thing about finally retiring. I don’t have to see him ever again.”
Smitty shook his head and looked over at Tim who was glaring at him like he was speaking a foreign language. Smitty smiled and waved as he got back into his van. Then he leaned out the window and said, “Don’t stress out too much, sarge. She loves you. She has for years. Just lean into it and go with the flow.” With that he put on his sunglasses and made a motion with his hand that looked like waves on the ocean. “Peace out!” he called. Then his honked his horn three times and drove off.
Tim stood frozen in the driveway. He had had some odd conversations with Smitty over the years, but this one might take the cake. He had no idea what he was talking about or who he was talking about. Good luck tonight? Lost a lot of money on a bet? What bet? Was he really talking about Lucy and him? Or was that just his mind playing tricks on him again? She loves me? Nah…. Smitty was losing it. It was only when he heard his girls hollering at him that he was broken out of his trance.
“Yeah. Coming,” he called back to them. Then he turned and jogged up the driveway to take the girls to camp.
Read more here:
It’s definitely a long chapter, but I hope you enjoy it.

two weeks of chenford 2024 day 10 - april 25th
prompt: rescue
type: one-shot ficlet
(warning: series-accurate depictions of injury to a child.)
.
.
For You, I'd Move Mountains
.
“Dad, Dad, watch me! Look, Dad!”
Tim glances up from his book and blinks, squinting into the blinding afternoon sunlight just as the small figure launches herself cannonball-style from the deck straight into the water. After a few seconds, her head resurfaces and she grabs the side of the pool again, grinning up at him with her gap-toothed smile.
He grins back and gives his daughter a proud thumbs-up. “Seeing lots of improvement there, A-team.”
Aster giggles and throws herself backwards, showing off with a reverse somersault followed by her little feet kicking wildly and proudly above the surface.
Tim chuckles and watches to make sure she resurfaces safely before returning to his book.
“Incoming!” shrieks another little voice from the porch doors, and Tim registers a neon-orange-clad, black-haired, child-sized streak barreling toward the pool to join her sister. Briar clasps her hands together and dives headfirst into the water like she’s been doing it all her life.
Which, coincidentally, she has.
On the twins’ first birthday, Lucy had enrolled them in infant swim classes after completing a truly impressive amount of research. He had been skeptical but trusted her judgment, and after only a few months of lessons he was watching his two girls as they were unceremoniously tossed one by one into a pool fully clothed, but quickly flipped themselves onto their backs, stuck their faces out of the water, and breathed normally until the instructor picked them up and handed them to their parents for hugs and praise.
And ever since then, Tim could breathe easier when the girls insisted on playing in the water, even though he never really understood the appeal. Truly, they are their mother’s children.
Speaking of . . .
“Aster!” Lucy calls, stepping out onto the deck. “Do you need to reapply?”
“No, Ma!” comes the answer.
“I got her,” Tim says, motioning to the bottle of sunblock on the table.
Lucy smiles a thanks and takes the seat to his left, kicking her feet up onto a nearby flower pot. She breathes a long sigh and leans her head back against the chair. Tim closes his book, crosses his arms, and takes in the sight of his wife next to him.
She looks stunning, as usual. Her face glows in the late summer sun, her cheeks are flushed from the heat and the bottle of beer she's sipping, and she’s wearing those jean shorts and yellow bikini top that he loves.
“I think I’ll take the girls to the beach tomorrow,” she considers. “Bri’s been begging to go.”
Tim raises his eyebrows. “If you want to swim in a glorified fish sewer tank, that’s your funeral.”
.

20 questions for fic writers
Thank you to the wonderful @thisnightissparkling089 for tagging me!
1. How many works do you have on Ao3?
I have 21, and older fics on FF. My goal is to get everything I've done on Ao3 soon.
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?
51,556
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently The Rookie, but have previously written fics for The Big Bang Theory, Gilmore Girls, New Girl, and Single Parents.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
While I'm Alone and Blue as Can Be
And If You Have a Minute (Why Don't We Go)
Maybe I'm Crazy To Suppose
We Must Be Living In the Golden Age
Before I Knew It (I Became All About You)
5. Do you respond to comments?
Yes! I try to respond to all of them, but I know a few have probably slipped through the cracks.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I really don't have any! Yikes. I'm a sucker for happy or at least hopeful endings. Maybe the closest would be Who's Gonna Come Around When You Break? It's not exactly angsty, but it is on the sadder side.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Allll of them?? 😂 Here are a few on the fluffier side of endings:
Maybe I'm Crazy To Suppose
My Favorite Line Was "Can I Call You Sometime?"
The Opening Night Prolongation
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Thankfully no!
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I don't. I just can't do it.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Never written one.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not yet, but I'd certainly be open to a collab!
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Oof. I have a few in my top tier, but Chenford has probably been the most wonderful shipping experience I've ever had!
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
The thing is I absolutely want to finish all my fics! The most obvious answer is my Gilmore Girls multi-chapter A Tale in Prose of Fire since it hasn't been updated in *checks date* SIX years. But I know what I want to do with it, and I still plan to finish it. I also have an unpublished Single Parents fic I've been planning since 2020, and knowing literally only a handful of people would read it hasn't given me much motivation to work on it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I LOVE writing dialogue, and I think it's what hopefully stands out in my fics. I've been told several times that my dialogue sounds just like the characters, which in fanfic, I can't think of a better compliment! So that's what I always strive for.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm not always the best at fully setting the scene, or getting into more minute details that can enhance the story. I also don't take enough risks in my writing, which isn't a big deal in writing a fluffy one-shot, but in some other pieces I've written over the years, I feel like the stakes could've been higher.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I haven't done it before, and probably the only language I'd feel even the slightest bit comfortable attempting would be Spanish. I'm nowhere near fluent, but know enough I could put some sentences together.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
My beloved Shamy from The Big Bang Theory. It's been 10 years since I wrote my first fanfic!
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
For my older ones, I love The Relationship Recalibration, especially a specific chapter that was a departure from anything I'd done before. I also love the previously mentioned A Tale In Prose of Fire even though it's still incomplete. And of more recent fics, I'm really proud of what I was able to put together in I Need Your Runway Lights To Burn For Me.
Tagging @sgtbradfords, @firstdegreefangirl, @americorys, @wanna-be-bold, and anyone else who would like to do this!

ya know, whenever tim does finally meet lucy's parents i sincerely hope that like the gentleman he is he insists that he cooks for and host them all so i can witness him getting increasingly more upset with the way they're berating their daughter, to the point where he just can't take it anymore and practically throws their asses out, because like hell you're gonna talk to her that way, not in my house!!
