The slow, shambling walk to the exit . Are those birds singing? The exhaustion in his arms hung like deadweights on his side . Slow, slow steps, light . There’s light. It’s morning, maybe. Or noon. He can hear birds. It’s over. He won. He can hear birds singing outside as he makes it to the exit. Slowly slowly he turns and looks out . The people, or whatever they are now, stand like dark pylons scattered across the mall’s floor. There’s a mass half covered in shadow. It’s all wires and hard plastic. A single hand reaches out from it, towards him. Blood drips. He can’t take it. He looks away . One last look to the stage. For no one but himself, and the birds singing sweetly, he stretches his arms out and they feel like lead. He bows . For himself . For whoever is still watching .

It’s done. The curtains are closing. He can finally go.

But it’s not over. Something someone grabs him around the torso. A pit opens in his stomach as he feels himself knocked off his feet. Falling backwards. He hasn’t won hope was charred like red fire fills his vision as he is dragged into the dark again.

He can still hear birdsong.
