NU GAZE !

Basic definition: Nu gaze is directly influenced by the shoegaze scene of the 90s. It refers to modern bands that incorparate the traditional shoegaze sound into their music. The name was coined by My Vitriol frontman Som Wardner, where in an interview he jokingly referred to his bands genre as "nu gaze". The genre contains droning riffs, subdued vocals and walls of distorted, messy guitar or synth.

Yes, A Place To Bury Strangers (Brooklyn, New York) has been around for a long time. And yes, I should have known that I would like them. But, I just never got around to listening to them.

And now, my starting place is "Onwards to the Wall". I'm not even starting at "Exploding Head". I was struck by the "liner notes" on Bandcamp for "Onwards to the Wall". Dead Oceans states that the masters for this album were the loudest ever submitted, and they actually had to turn down the volume. The write-up also states, "This thing is pummeling."

When I think of pummeling I think of Buick, Serena Maneesh and Teksti-TV 666. Listening to this I can't help but think of an amazing cross of The Jesus and Mary Chain, Suicide and The Raveonettes.

A Place To Bury Strangers recently released a live LP on Levitation.
