So I finally got time to watch the trailer for A Moment But Forever, it gives me my fave trope, FL protecting the beautiful man everyone wants dead.

Poor ML is so puzzled. Talk to Tantai Jin, boo!

Best part is apparently her initial mission was to off him? But who can blame her for seeing LXY and going "no freaking way!!"

A Moment But Forever, an atheist steam-punk xianxia drama

So I got my hands on the script of A Moment But Forever (念无双), an upcoming drama starring Tang Yan and Liu Xueyi. And it starts off like your typical Xianxia drama:

The fox demi-gods dwell and cultivate on top of a cloudy mountain. Every X number of years, they select a group of young women to serve them. In exchange, the young women get to learn all sorts of cultivation techniques and skills.

This year, a mysterious young woman (the female lead) joins the group of young women who aspire to serve and learn from the demi-gods. Once they’ve settled on the mountain, she discovers that one of her cohorts is actually an assassin who is trying to kill the High Priest of the fox demi-gods (the male lead). Our protagonist manages to stop the assassin and save the male lead.

Sounds like a typical xianxia so far.

But then it is revealed that the assassin is a member of a human terrorist organization that originated as a union for mechanics and engineers. Because you see, in a world where demi-gods can create magical artifacts and use their magic to make supernatural things happen, humans have become reliant on magical objects to power their technology and the demi-god fox people have used their cultivation power to establish a class system with themselves at the top of the social and political pyramid. They aren’t despotic. They behave like many of the powerful “good” cultivator organizations you see in your typical xianxia drama. They receive offerings from normal humans and are treated as a privileged class within human society.

Some humans, like the young women who choose to serve the demi-gods, believe that humans should cultivate under the guidance of the demi-gods.

Other humans believe that humans should be self-sufficient rather than relying on the magic of the demi-god cultivators. These humans developed steam engines, gas engines, and gunpowder. The demi-gods can fly, so they created flying ships powered by steam. The demi-gods can kill a bunch of people with a wave of their hands, so these humans developed explosives.

The terrorist organization that sent the assassin is a radical group of engineers and mechanics who believe that humans need to replace all magical artifacts with man-made technology in order to break free from their reliance on the “generosity” of the demi-gods. They believe that humans need to take up arms to rebel agains their subjugation by the demi-gods. Their spiritual mascot is the Wushuang, the goddess of craft. She was an ordinary human mechanic who invented extraordinary technologies and became the goddess of craft after her death. The humans rally under her name to rebel against the demi-gods, but as one human character tells our protagonist: “It doesn’t matter if the goddess truly existed or not. It doesn’t matter if the stories about her feats are made up or not. We humans just need something to believe in.”

And it just so happens that our protagonist is the goddess Wushuang, sent down from heaven on a mission to retrieve a magical artifact from the High Priest of the fox demi-gods…
