Jacqueline Onassis, "Being Present"
Tumblr media
The New Yorker, January 13, 1975 P. 26
Long talk story about the new International Center of Photography which occupies the mansion that formerly served as headquarters for the Nat'l Audubon Society at 5th Ave. & 94th St.
The week before the Center's recent opening, writer spoke with Cornell Capa, its executive director & with Karl Katz, one of the moving spirits behind it.
The Center will exhibit, teach & publish photography & will set up archives for the preservation of photographs.
It grew out of the International Fund for Concerned Photography, founded in 1966 by Cornell Capa.
Like the Fund, the Center has been dedicated to the memory of 3 photojournalists who were killed in the 1950s while on picture assignment: David Seymour (Chim), Werner Bischof, and Robert Capa (Cornell's older brother).
The Center will be concentrating on photography as a means of communications rather than as art.
It is interested in committed photo journalism--in documentary photography--which no longer has an outlet now that the big picture magazines have folded.
Tells about tour of the Center..
Tells about Cartier-Bresson's exhibition called "Apropos U.S.S.R. (1954 and 1973)" which includes an audio-visual presentation.
Tells what Cartier-Bresson says on the taped recording.
And also discusses his recent statement that paintings, not photography has been his obsession.
The Center is the only museum in the country devoted exclusively to photography, except for the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House in Rochester.

The land for the park which was in time to become Milwaukee's Washington park zoo was purchased in 1891 and given the name West park. It offered an excellent view of the city which at that time was developing around it. Its chief attraction, according to a report written in 1895, was its "grand, old forest, some 15 acres in extent, composed of the only maples and other old trees 100 feet high that were spared by the ax for a great distance around the city." An artificial lake provided excellent boating in the summer and splendid skating in the winter. In 1897 a bandstand and concert grove were provided. These new facilities so enhanced band concerts in the public eye that such stands were erected in other city parks. Such widely known bands as Christopher Bach's, Clauder's and Dunker's, as well as musical organizations of the city's industrial firms, the Harvester and Overland bands, for example, performed several times a week. At the time that this picture was taken in the late 1890's, the park was still known as West park; it received its new and more familiar name in 1900. Although part of the area is still maintained as a park, the rest has been taken over by the expressway. (Picture courtesy of C. J. Nelson, 2949 S. 94th st., and information from the local history collection of the Milwaukee public library.)

See Dr. Chrzankowski.  He explains to me how I ended up getting a bill from Dr. B.  Can’t get two checkups in a year.  Uh oh.  Not that I realized Dr. B was giving me a checkup.  My error.  But the bill from Dr B has stopped showing up.  Ah, but it might show up again.  Dammit.
I walk up to David’s place via West End Ave. Local color:  A curiosity, that deserves a double take.  A phone booth with a working phone, not vandalized.
The idea was to go over music with D Cox.  But as we sit at his kitchen table the conversation turns more easily to past gigs.  We did many of the same ones but not at the same time.  I reel off the number of local orchestras I played with that have gone out of business.  D still does jazz gigs, lugging a drumset, sometime driving long distances.
We end up walking from his place (94th St and Riverside) down to 72nd, where we part ways.  I walk home.  A long walk. Realize I should take long walks more often.
Thursday, May 4, 2023
Ache from all of  that walking.  But, ahem, a good ache.  I resolve to do more walking.
The judge has thrown the book at the Proud Boys.  The unrepentant Mr. Tarrio and three others.  What a bunch. Trump’s army.  They know they will be exonerated if Trump gets back into office.
The E Jean Carroll case continues.  Trump is seeing to golf courses in Scotland and Ireland.  He wouldn’t dare be anywhere around while this is going on.  There is a filmed deposition.  This is all b.s. he says, political, all having to do with his running for office. He manages to insult Roberta Kaplan, the Carroll lawyer  dealing out the questions... Says Carroll was not his type, add that Ms Kaplan is not his type either.  This brings to mind a nasty interview with Charles Manson some years ago in which he told the interviewer she “could lose a few pounds.”  Same mentality... (Oh yes...he’s running for office...Note that stomach turning film clip of his appearance in Iowa.  A recording of the National Anthem sung by J 6 inmates while he, [stubby fingered] hand on heart, recites the Pledge of Allegiance.  After which he tells the crowd that these jailbirds are in fact proud patriots, cruelly incarcerated.  They, like him, he says, have done nothing wrong.)
