Early 18th Century Venetian 'Schiavona' Sword

The Schiavona is an iconic basket-hilted sword that was closely associated with the Italian city state of Venice. The earliest examples are believed to have come from an elite body of Slavic soldiers hired by the Venetian council, and date back as far as the late 16th Century.

Schiavona are identified by their unique basket hilts and 'cats head' pommels. The renowned sword historian and author, Ewart Oakeshott grouped the schiavona basket hilts into two broad categories, the simplified Type 1 with it's broad flat bars, and the Type 2 of lattice work design.

They Type 1 hilt began to appear around the early 1600's and the first Type 2 between 1620 and 1630. Type 1's remained in use for most of the 17th Century after which Type 2 hilts became dominant.

Over the life of schiavona swords, (1600 - 1797) their hilts became increasingly complex and ornate as they became associated with the character of Venice, with the upper levels of society also carrying their own schiavonas.

Based on the features of the hilt, this sword most likely dates to 1710 - 1740. The iron pommel and 93 cm blade suggest that it is of munitions grade and was likely carried by a regular cavalry man.

She knew they could win this for the third year in a row. Kate ran to the corner preparing for her three-pointer. Sydney gets the ball and passes it to Kate allowing her to sink the shot. Natalee cheered and squeezed Kate's mom's hand.

"They've got it" Jill spoke squeezing her hand back. 84-82. Iowa was losing. It was back to Iowa's ball possession. They left Kate open at the three-point line. 84-85. Nebraska shoots a three...they make it. 89-91. It is time for Kate to shoot her free throws.

Jill wraps her arms around Natalee, praying her shots go in. Her first show bounces on the rim a little before falling in. "Yes, Kate!" Jill and Natalee both yell getting ready for her next shot. She misses her second shot. "It's okay baby! You got 18 seconds left" Natalee cheered watching Kate the entire time.

She didn't miss the light smirk Kate did while running back to get on defense either. 89-94.. IOWA WINS. Jill and Natalee begin jumping up and down hugging each other. After the two minute team celebration, Kate runs over to Natalee pulling her out of the stands.

Natalee wraps her legs around Kate, hiding her face in the crook of her neck. "I'm so proud of you baby," Natalee tells her leaning up and kissing her lips. Natalee slides down seeing cameras zoom in on the two.

Natalee wipes the happy tears off of Kate's face and places a kiss where the tears used to be. Kate continues holding her waist while hugging her mom and speaking to fans. "Meet me in the tunnel" Kate whispers to her kissing her cheek and running off.

"You make her so happy Nat" Jill smiles hugging her future daughter-in-law. "That's all I want to do" Natalee states hugging her back and wiping a tear off her face. Natalee walks inside the tunnel and scrolls on her phone before she feels her fiance's presence in front of her.

"Hi baby" Kate smiles wrapping her into a sweaty hug. "Hi my love" Natalee responds wrapping her arms around her waist. "I heard you cheering for me" Kate smiles letting her hands rest on Nat's hips. "I have to support my fiance" Natalee cheeses showing Kate the ring.

"Mm that word sounds nice"

"What word?" Natalee teases allowing her hands to crawl under Kate's jersey feeling her sweaty back. "The f word" Kate smirks kissing her forehead. "My sexy fiance" Kate connects their lips letting them move together slowly. Both girls letting out small moans.

"Excuse me? Kate they are ready for your interview" One of the team managers tell her shyly then walking off. "Way to ruin a moment" Kate jokes pulling Nat with her to the interview.

Natalee stands in the corner to make sure she isn't in the way, but she still has a good angle on Kate.

"Kate you carried your team during OT with your three's. How does that make you feel?" Kate keeps her eye on Nat who smiles at her from the corner. Kate smirks then begins to answer the question.

"Nebraska just left me open and when I see an opportunity I take it. All of our girls put in work to win this game today, so people can't just say it is me, Caitlin, or Gabbie."

"Why was this game so important to you?"

"Every game is important, but this is my last college championship and I had to make sure I did everything I could out there. And it is hard for every game to not mean something because I have my family and my fiance cheering for me, I mean they miss important things to them just so they can come watch me play."

"Fiance?"

"Yes. I got engaged recently and I guess this is our announcement." Kate laughed scratching the back of her head. "Is he in the room with us?" "SHE is actually" Kate motions for Natalee to come stand beside her.

"This is my fiance, Natalee." Kate smiles kissing the side of her head.

From the bombycidae family. They have a wingspan of 30-50 mm. They tend to live in man made habitats where mulberry trees can be found. They can be found from northern India to northern China, Korea, Japan, and the far eastern regions of Russia.

Nematomorpha is a phylum of animals that act as parasitoids of arthropods, so named for their superficial similarity to nematodes. They are commonly called Horsehair Worms, Hairsnakes, or Gordian Worms.

Most nematomorph species are 50 to 100 mm (2 to 3.9 in) long, but some can get up to 2 metres (6.7 ft) long! Adult nematomorphs can often be found in water or in damp areas. They have 2 distinct sexes, and the free-living, non-feeding adults can be found coiled into tight balls and knots while mating. They lay their eggs in water, for their larva to be eaten or burrow in through the skin of aquatic larvae and encyst. When the aquatic larvae (the paratenic host) is eaten by their primary host, the cyst hatches and they become a juvenile. The nematomorph lives inside their host, absorbing nutrients, growing, and molting for a few weeks to several months before leaving its host to mate. It often becomes several times longer than the length of its host. Some species cause their host to seek out water and drown itself, thus allowing the nematomorph to exit into its new watery habitat and begin the cycle anew.

I called my grandpa, who was a naturalist, over and told him it was some kind of creature, perhaps a new species! He said no it was just a hair in the water. I said no it’s moving on its own! At least one species, Paragordius tricuspidatus is able to escape from not only their host after ingestion by a predator, but also from the digestive tract of the predator. If their host cricket is eaten by a fish or frog prematurely, they then wriggle out through predator’s mouth, gills, or nose. That’s some Animorphs bullshit right there.

Nematomorphs play an important roll in ecology. As many species infect grasshoppers and crickets and drive them into the water, they also provide a significant source of food for fish. Without nematomorphs, fish that depend on grasshoppers and crickets would likely turn to other invertebrates, possibly throwing riparian ecosystems out of balance.

Nematomorphs often have to wait a long time before being eaten by their primary host. One species, Paragordius varius, is able to withstand being frozen at up to -70°C (-94°F) for weeks. Then it thaws out in the Spring, still ready to infect its next host.

We know that some species cause their hosts to enter water and drown themselves. We don’t actually know how they do this.

I used to work at an animal shelter and one time as I was cleaning I accidentally sprayed a cricket with cleaner and a horsehair worm came out of it. I then picked it up and showed it to the vet team and they all gathered around to stare.

“What a long day.” You say once you lay down on Scaramouche’s bed. “Mm, yeah.” He snuggles next to you. “Tired?” You ask and he nods. He wraps his arms around your waist, resting his head on your shoulder.

“I love you.” He mumbled and you laugh knowing he’s about to hit the hay soon. “I love you too.” You kiss the top of his head. “Yn,” “Hm?” “Do you want to get married?” You sit up immediately from shock and his head falls right on the sheet. “W-What?” You blush. “You’re serious?” Scaramouche sits up. “Yeah but if you don’t want to then I’m okay. As long as I’m with you.” You blush even more.

“Wow, I didn’t know you were serious…” “Of course I’m serious. Same as I’m serious about having a family with you.” You gasp, “Oh my god. Scara, I don’t know what to say.” Scaramouche frowns, “Sorry. That’s a lot isn’t it?” “A bit…” You hold his hand. “What’s with the sudden suggestion?”

Scaramouche leans his head back on your shoulder. “I guess seeing my mom made me question a lot of things.” “Oh like what?” “I don’t know…I don’t want to turn out like her. I know I’m NOT her but I’m scared that…that I’ll hurt you…” You frown and hold him tight. “You won’t hurt me Scara. Our relationship is by no means perfect but we’ll always pull through. Don’t push yourself too hard.”

You brush his hair and plant a kiss on top of his head. Scaramouche hums and lifts his head up. “You always know what to say.” You giggle, “Not always.” You kiss him and he smiles. “I love you.” “I love you too.”

He drags you back down on the bed. “Still, think about what I said.” You blush and hide your face in the covers. “I will…” “Good.” Then, he fell asleep.

You sigh then look at Scaramouche. He slept soundly and peacefully. You smile and place a hand on his cheek. “Maybe.” You whisper. “When the time comes, I’ll definitely say yes.” You kiss his forehead and you also begin to drift in sleep.

five good things

It's been a while! Let's see...

I finished my BA in Language Studies with English and German with the Open University (part time distance learning) and achieved a first class honours! I've been kind of playing it down and thinking of it as not a huge deal, partly because I've got this internalised sense that you don't brag about your achievements, nobody likes a know-it-all, being intelligent/academic is not the done thing, which dates back to my schooldays (which are over 30 years ago at this point what the hell), but actually...look, I was a solid 64% achiever throughout my initial academic career at 18-24, and I thought that was all I was capable of, but if I've calculated it correctly (not entirely certain, maths is still not my strong point) I think my overall score for this one has been 94% which...holy crap, you guys. Nobody is more surprised by this than me. I think it's a combination of 30 years' extra maturity plus they actually tell you what they want you to do these days, but...wait, I'm playing it down again, aren't I? Anyway. On to the Masters in Applied Linguistics!

Which starts in October, but the course website opens next Wednesday so the plan is to get in there and try and get ahead. Whether I'll actually manage that is up for debate, but I do rather want to try and do at least some of it early, especially because...

I am going to be spending eleven days in Helsinki in mid-late October because Japa from Private Line's new band is playing a show on the 19th, Private Line are playing a show on the 26th, and my absolute hero Michael Monroe has announced a solo acoustic show on the 25th which it would be rude not to attend, since it's a 5-minute walk from my hotel XD I'd already booked to be there from the 18th to the 28th so I could see Japa and PL because I have loved them inordinately since 2006, so when MM announced his solo acoustic tour of Finland beginning in August and ending in October and I realised one of the last dates was while I was already going to be in Helsinki, well. :D :D :D I am super excited, I have a spreadsheet with museums and opening times and days and hopefully I'll be spending a day in Tampere and a day in Turku running round museums as well as all the Helsinki museums, some of which I've already visited several times and am excited to revisit, and some of which I've never been to before. I am looking forward to this SO MUCH YOU GUYS OMG.

And then, when I get back, rather than coming straight home, I will be spending three days in London with the utterly glorious @lemurious who is spending a couple of weeks this side of the pond! I cannot WAIT. We are going to run round London looking at museums and Roman stuff and eating food and drinking beer and nerding out about Tolkien and history and EVERYTHING and it is going to be AWESOME. aaaaAAAAAAAA!

TRSB reveals are in less than an hour! My fic is here, the art by the lovely @erathene, who I am delighted to have got to know this summer, is also here, and I am so excited for everyone to finally get to read a story from Tilda's point of view, after her spending so long on the sidelines of Empty Vessel-'verse! Tilda herself was super excited to finally get to talk properly, as evidenced by the fact that the fic is 46k long (oh GOD) and I've already had to begin the sequel because there wasn't enough space (or time XD ) in the story for everything that needed to happen! She is still going, and will be for some considerable time, and it is such a joy to finally have her unleashed! Those of you who are already familiar with the concept of the Tilda Warning will understand that it very much applies to this fic XD

@sigrielweek is in a month! The eternally awesome @seagull-energy has very kindly done some beautiful art for the header and icon, and I am percolating prompts/themes this weekend (if you have some please sling them my way, you all know I am not at home to the idea fairy at the best of times XDDDD ), and the event will be running between 7-13 October, to coincide with the Battle of the Five Armies on the 10th (following on from Smaug's attack on Lake-town on the 1st)...

Innumerable Stars assignments are out and I am super excited by mine! I can say no more at this point but it's going to be huge fun :D :D :D

Oh! I finished Writers' Month as well as TRSB! The masterpost is here, and I'm rather enjoying re-reading the fics I had to bang out without having time to read them again, at a rather more leisurely pace.

I had a very successful meeting at job number two yesterday to finally kickstart a project my predecessor dropped in my lap having got the relevant people interested and raring to go, without having actually done the doings as to practicalities like funding, and who might actually do the work, and how it all might function. I (not a natural project manager) took fright and immediately shoved it onto the backest of back-burners while I got my feet under me, and only this year have begun to feel as though I might be ready to start exploring how it might work. I am not an academic, unlike my predecessor, at least not in this subject area, and I am very intimidated by everyone else's knowledge, but I have two absolutely fantastic volunteers who are very keen to be involved, and between them they've been coaxing me back towards it. I had a very useful online meeting with the two academics who were interested earlier in the year, and yesterday they came to see us and talk about it some more. Much to my relief, they will sort out the funding, the people to do it, the actual doing of the doings, my volunteers will do the photography (it's a catalogue of the medieval (and possibly later) seals attached to the documents I look after, of which there are at least 3000; I know nothing about seals, we're not really taught about them when we learn to be archivists, they're kind of treated as an adjunct to the "important stuff" which is how to read and interpret the documents they're attached to, so I am massively out of my depth but the academics are awesome and are so excited to get started, I showed them a tiny fraction of the stuff and they were nerding out in a delightfully knowledgeable and also recognisable manner, so I feel much more as though I am among my people, even if we know about different things XD there is so much to learn and find out and I am so excited for them to get started)

We hired a skip last week and emptied out the junkyard that the garden had turned into, plus a certain amount of stuff we didn't need from the loft, got rid of loads of cardboard boxes we didn't need, and generally the house feels a lot better as a result. There are still several boxes of stuff that need to go to the charity warehouse which I have not managed to sort out doing yet, but they're in the corner of the living room and ready to go. Weight off the mind, I swear.

Also I have dismantled the old swingseat and treated myself to a double egg chair which is so much more comfortable. It was in the sale (bonus) and although I probably won't get to use it again this summer it's there (covered up, it came with a cover, so it's protected from the elements) and I can get back out there on it as soon as the weather perks back up again next year. :D :D :D

I (with the missus' capable assistance) redyed my hair last Friday and it is now a delightful confection of sunset colours - orange at the roots, then purple, then pink on the ends. I took some selfies last weekend so there may be a gpoy post if I can work myself up to doing it XD

I'm in the pub right now with a nice beer and the laptop, writing (working on the sequel to the TRSB fic) and generally chilling out and having a lovely evening. The music is 1960s girl groups/Wall of Sound, which is one of my favourite things, and it is delightful.

French 'Sabre a l'Orientale' cavalry officers' sword

The 'Sabre a l'Orientale' (often called mameluke swords in English) gained popularity with fashionable officers during the French campaign in Egypt and Syria (1798 to 1801).

Initially, these swords would have been acquired in battle either as a trophy, from being given as a token of respect by allies, or from a surrendering foe.

However, as the fashion spread throughout Europe, local sword makers and cutlers began to produce their own interpretations of the style, such as the regulation dress sabres of British Lancers.

This sword style remains in service today as the British 1831 Pattern General Officers sword and US Marine Corps Officer dress sword.

My sword likely dates from 1810 to 1830 and caught my interest because it features an Eastern-produced shamshir blade mounted in a European-made mameluke-style hilt with cow or buffalo horn grip scales. The sword is plain and functional without the ornamentation typically found on swords belonging to senior officers. Going by the style of scabbard drag, this sword originally belonged to a French cavalry officer.

Southern Brazil faces humanitarian crisis after historic flooding

Since the end of April, Rio Grande do Sul has been facing the devastating effects of historic rains and floods that have hit practically this entire southernmost Brazilian state of almost 11 million inhabitants. A series of climatic factors, mainly those associated with global warming produced by capitalism and intensified last year by El Niño, are behind one of Brazil’s greatest climatic tragedies, one of the latest extreme weather events in the world.

Record temperatures in the South Atlantic Ocean have increased the frequency and intensity of weather systems that bring cold and humidity to Rio Grande do Sul. Between April and May, a sequence of these events was prevented from spreading to the rest of Brazil due to a warm air mass in the Midwest and Southeast of Brazil associated with record temperatures for this time of year. The humidity brought to Rio Grande do Sul by weather systems from the South Atlantic met with that coming from the Amazon region in northern Brazil, which condensed into record rainfall in the state.

In two cities in Rio Grande do Sul, Fontoura Xavier and Caxias do Sul, it rained 778 mm and 694 mm, respectively, between April 22 and May 6. This is equivalent to the average rainfall for these cities for the first five months of the year, when it rains the most in Rio Grande do Sul.

As a result, entire towns have been flooded. According to the Civil Defense bulletin of May 27, 94 percent of the state’s municipalities (469 out of 497) were hit, affecting more than 2 million people. Already, 169 deaths have been confirmed, and 56 people are still missing. More than 800 people were injured.

Prompt 94 for Menoly with a very gentle male s/o, maybe?

((I didn't end up specifying a male Reader in this one; they're gender-neutral, so I hope that still works~))

94. “Just relax for me, I’ll make it feel good.”

The plastic toy isn’t as warm as your skin, when it touches her. You chose it yourself, though, and insisted it would feel good, so Menoly shoves her worries down into the back of her mind and tries to ignore them. 

You’re always gentle with her. You wouldn’t hurt her... hopefully. 

Already, you have her stretched open on two of your fingers. This much isn’t painful, but there’s a distinct, tight feeling to it that leaves her struggling not to squirm— like she either needs to get away, or get more. You had her stay sitting up this time, at least, so even with her legs spread and so much bare skin on display, it’s not quite as bad as being on her back.

“I’m going to put it in now, okay?” you ask, but Menoly can hardly pay attention to your words while your fingers rub little circles on her insides. 

“Mm-hmm...” she squeaks, and feels herself clench around you.

“Just relax, sweetheart. I’ll make it feel good.”

That gentle assurance has Menoly shivering, and biting down on her lower lip to hold back an even more pathetic whine. She forces herself to stay still when your fingers withdraw, and after a moment of uncomfortable emptiness, the cool plastic returns, and slowly pushes into her cunt.

Immediately, the stretch is different. Not bad, really, but distinctly more intense than before. She must have gotten used to your fingers.

You work the toy into her little by little. It’s not very big, supposedly, but Menoly’s body is shallow and tight and scared enough that you have to be careful. Still, the stretch quickly starts to feel good— good enough that by the time it’s as deep as it’ll go, her breath is unsteady and her thighs are shaking. It’s not so cold anymore, either. Just solid and wide, and a lot. 

“See? It’s not so scary, is it?” you ask after she’s had a moment to adjust, while the slightest shift of the toy has Menoly going tense all over.

She shakes her head, struggling for an answer. It’s hard to think of words when she’s so full, but you don’t seem to mind. The toy withdraws, then, every bit as slowly as it went in. Sensation lights up her nerves as it drags back out— and the emptiness is twice as unbearable, this time. 

“Good girl. You’re taking it so well,” you tell her. Menoly fights the urge to beg all over again. Her body is heating up, wanting more—

You move the toy in and out at a steady pace, and she finally does start to relax. With the constant shocks of pleasure to focus on, it’s easier not to be afraid; she’s so full that there’s no room left for anything else. Her legs drop open, her jaw goes slack, and the tension finally melts away.
