Thoughts

I’ve been thinking about the ending of 9… and how nobody cared about how their souls were forcefully used to bring back the earth without their knowledge. It’s days like these that I think about Matoro. I do not like taking hope or comfort in Matoro’s death… in any way. It makes me sick.

But what about... Jaller? And Hahli? And Takanuva? What would the Matoran, Toa, and Turaga think?

Acker, Shane (1971-)

Award-winning director, animator, and designer, best known as the creator of “9″, the Tim Burton- and Timur Bekmambetov- produced feature film based on his 2004 Oscar-nominated short, also titled “9″ (ten minutes, thirty-three seconds). Originally from Wheaton, Illinois, Acker graduated from UCLA where he received both an M.Arch.I (1998) and an MFA in animation (2004). His first short film, “The Hangnail” (two minutes), was completed at the UCLA Animation Workshop. While a student at UCLA he also made the one-minute “The Astounding Talents of Mr. Grenade” (2003), as well as his short, “9″, which premiered at Sundance in 2005 and garnered numerous awards, including a Student Academy Award, the Best in Show at the 2005 SIGGRAPH Electronic Theater, and a student Emmy Award. Acker has stated that his inspirations in the field of animation are avant-garde artists such as Jan Svankmajer and the Brothers Quay. The Brother Quay film “Street of Crocodiles” (1986) is clearly an influence on 9. Acker said in an interview, “Their [the Brothers Quay] big thing is they use detritus, old discarded things: old dolls, old pieces of machinery, things like that. That creates a different, off-kilter kind of mind-set, brings about a lot of metaphor. I found that very inspirational and in tune with the design I wanted in 9, the experience I wanted in that world- a world that’s destroyed and all that’s left are these bits and pieces. But from all that, this form is beginning to emerge that is finding ways to negotiate a new landscape and create a life for itself.”

Acker has also worked as an animator on such films as Peter Jackson’s Academy Award-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003) and Sam Raimi’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” (2013).

Two reference sheets completed this month involved redesigning two characters (Silvia & Theorie) and creating two from scratch (Noir & Bianca). Had a lot of fun making them! I also included Ming's reference that I completed in December of last year since I forgot to post it to the blog earlier -oops-

saw is about human perseverance and flawed philosophy (it gets overshadowed by sensationalism that comes with creative traps that have the explicit purpose of Fucking People Up). jigsaw, the killer, does what he does because "people don't appreciate their lives until it hangs in the balance", hence the catchphrase at the end of nearly all tapes given to the victims at the start of their torment, "live or die, make your choice." you could lay down and die, or you could fight to survive.

it's INCREDIBLY flawed, of course, because jigsaw can justify putting anyone in a trap. "not appreciating your life" can mean anything from being a rapist, to a drug addict, to lying to your boss that you're sick so you won't be coming in to work today.

i don't want to spoil anything in case you DO want to watch it so i'll just leave it there for now. you can find them all on 9movies dot top, i recommend just watching them in order of release (movies 1 to 6 are listed in roman numerals, saw the final chapter/3D is 7, jigsaw is 8, spiral is 9, then X for 10)

as for trigger warnings...... fuck dude uh. uhhhhh. well there's definitely needles in 2, i think 4? has a rapist for a victim but his crimes aren't explicitly shown, 10 has an attempted assault (foiled).... actually i think nearly all of them sort of have needles since when someone is chosen to be put into the torment nexus they're typically drugged with a syringe to the neck.

and wrt to violence i'd put the gore about level with final destination personally (though saw has much more of it, of course) so if you can handle final destination you can probably handle saw in that regard!

there is as far as i can remember no explicit nudity of female characters though. which fucking rocks if you know anything about women in horror movies
