#Why're people so butthurt about our reaction to what Sebastian did? He literally did something distasteful and now we're not allowed to react at all? And then they rant about how we shouldn't be pointing fingers at Sebastian cuz Ciel is like just as bad. Like really they're gonna go there.

#Gonna compare a child whose suffered so much but later did a few awful things to a hellish spawn who did a gazillion crimes without sparing sympathy or mercy. It’s infuriating! So Lizzy can have one little selfish moment in the entirety of the manga and they can hate her for it and talk smack about her but we can’t if it’s Sebastian, even though we have a dozen good reasons why.

There are many contributing factors as to why there are mixed opinions upon Ch. 137. I believe a large part of this is actually the effect of the narrative and structuring of the series. The notion of human and demonic evil will be explored in this; here’s a hint - demons being evil doesn’t excuse the utter annoyance I feel from looking at the fandom’s division upon this topic.

Sebastian is the protagonist of this series which is why we see this story from his perspective, even if it is a mostly third person narrative. This is what we’ve known from the start of the manga; in the first part of ‘Downstairs with Kuroshitsuji’ in Yen Press’ translation, Toboso and Editor K discuss “that butler story” and how “having a butler as a hero is difficult”. In addition to this, there have been numerous tweets that discuss this (x) (x) as well. This leads us to empathise with Sebastian’s character - logically, when you learn and follow someone’s reasoning, you’re more likely to take their side. Following Sebastian throughout leaves people to want to support him.

Now, when a character that you support suddenly does something controversial, this can go either way: you can decide that you disapprove of the action or see that there isn’t anything wrong with it. In Sebastian’s case, people either detest his actions or excuse them with the fact that he’s a demon. In the recent chapter, Sebastian forces Ciel into a catch-22 quagmire. Ciel is lead to believe that he is the reason for his brother’s death and thus he can either take Sebastian’s contract, gain power and lose his soul, or he can refuse and still lose his soul - there’s no way that Ciel can win. What Sebastian has done is terrible. This… is by human standards. You wouldn’t want to play a game where you lose either way. As a demon, by demonic standards, what he’s doing is normal. Demons are evil spirits. Bad. Not good. This fandom seems to forget this. There’s a thin line between thinking that something that is bad is cool and thinking that something that is bad is acceptable. Sebastian is a cool character, but that doesn’t make ragdolling a child’s corpse at all acceptable.

Upon the point of Ciel being “just as bad”, I too would beg to disagree. Ciel is a child that has been manipulated into this way of thinking. If we apply Christian demonology to this, which this series seems to follow more than any other religious demonology, “a man begins to be influenced… to commit sin, there must also be some extrinsic cause of this. And this can be no other than the devil.” (Malleus Maleficarum, P.I, Question V) Plainly speaking, of course demons are assholes and they’re going to drag you down to be an asshole as well. Sebastian’s influence has done this to Ciel, as we’ve seen from Ch. 137, he has been raised to believe that this is the right way. Many times, it’s stressed that Sebastian has “cultivated” his soul. This key word shows us that he sees Ciel like produce, only for consumption. There aren’t any ulterior motives as to saving his damn happy meal. What Ciel does, his decisions and ethics, are all as a result of being raised by Sebastian. He destroyed the children in the Circus Arc as a result of a panic attack and Sebastian co-ercing him to take action. While one may argue that Sebastian tried to stop him from killing them and simply completing the Queen’s mission, it is still Sebastian’s “parenting” that had lead Ciel to believe that it was the right thing to do. We’ve seen him before as the small child that wanted to open a toy shop to provide for the children that were sickly like him - he used to be selfless and kind. Therefore, I don’t quite acknowledge the argument of Ciel being terrible all by himself.

Sebastian deserves to be called out for his actions. The excuse that “he’s a demon so he does terrible things” shouldn’t be used as an excuse, rather it should be an acknowledgement. He is a demon - he will do terrible things. We shouldn’t let this slide by. Though I do criticise Toboso’s writing heavily, she has made it heavily clear, many times, that Sebastian doesn’t feel empathy. He “loves seeing [Ciel] grovel and suffer”. This is a character that is evil and he’s been excused for his evil actions because he’s evil; what a shitty contradictory statement. That’s how I’ve seen the Sebastian defence reactions.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that I dislike Sebastian’s character of course. It’s interesting to see someone as evil as him. However, I too am disgusted by what he’s done. If you want my honest opinion, yes, there are a dozen reasons why we should be able to talk smack about Sebastian.

Translating A Movement In Solarpunk: Ecological and Fantastical Stories In A Sustainable World

"Imagine a sustainable world, run on clean and renewable energies that are less aggressive to the environment. Now imagine humanity under the impact of these changes."

I had the pleasure of backing a Kickstarter for a Brazilian anthology originally published in Portuguese six years ago in 2012. The solarpunk movement has been gaining a lot of momentum in English but is lacking a cohesive voice. Generally, people use varying precision when describing what it actually is. An anthology that assembles short fiction under a banner definition therefore, is quite welcome, as it seems to be synonymous with cli-fi, eco-fiction, and even ecopunk sometimes. The working definition taken from this Kickstarter is as follows: "The term "solarpunk" has been steadily gaining momentum in the English-speaking world to describe an aesthetic of hopeful, eco-friendly futures, stories that try to shift us away from the dystopian mindset that has been so prominent in recent science fiction."

"The literary roots of solarpunk stretch back decades (at least), influenced and inspired by thought experiments such as Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Dispossessed and Ernest Callenbach’s Ecotopia."

Sometimes when I read solarpunk, as with some newer stuff classified as cyberpunk, the 'punk' is missing. I categorize it pretty broadly. Some sort of resistance happening against societal structures; I'm pretty open. But often times it's just not there. I was a bit worried this would be the case with solarpunk because this occurs far more often in English literature that I've consumed. Turns out, though, I needn't have worried. 

The anthology has 9 pieces of short fiction and is a good anthology. It has a wide degree of fiction within the category, from a noir-esk P.I story, to moral and ethics discussed regarding society relying completely on technology that allows them to live via implants that allow the human body to subsist via photosynthesis. There is a wide range and very imaginative arrangement of stories that were surprising in how they tackled specific far-flung issues. Despite a military fiction scenario which is just not my cup-of-tea (at all), and two slower than I'd like stories, I came away feeling overwhelmingly positive about it. 

“People tend to think that we Puritans are a lot of human carcasses, living ruins, because we refuse to allow technology to interfere with the physical abode that God has thought fit to grant our spirits, but the truth is just the opposite. We take care of the temple. Food and exercise, an active life. If people really cared about the health God gave them, prostheses and genetic implants wouldn’t be necessary.”

In one story, "Xibalba Dreams of the West" (which surprised me in a fun way when It had wuxia elements) a teacher who believes in her just and good society, as one does, takes her son to a ritual where criminals are banished forever, seemingly to their death. Years ago her father committed a crime and shared in this fate and she still struggles with that in her personal life... but when a stranger tells her there is more to her father's story than she knows, her world is turned upside down as she begins to learn there is more to her government and the motives behind the exiles than she could have imagined.

"These were Sons of Palenque, as the descendants of the ancient Mayan Empire were called, who refused to accept the end of their people’s sovereignty over South Tenoque and chose a life at the margins of society."

This was a particularly great story. It goes from mundane to fantastical as the truth is unraveled by her, as though her possibilities were increasing exponentially as she learns more, which I enjoyed a lot. There are some cool fight scenes and Mayan colloquial terms that were fun to lookup. It was very clever and alone pretty much makes the price of the anthology, for me, a deal. 

Another stand out one was "Gary Johnson". At the outset it appeared not to be solarpunk at all. It has a young man in present-day searching for his great grandfathers birth certificate to be given Italian status, but they need his missing birth certificate to prove his ancestry first. He ends up discovering a remarkable story in which his great-grandfather, a priest, becomes involved with the construction of a technology that can remove something's soul, I say something because it turns out everything has a soul! Inanimate objects, animals, and people all. As a priest, the moral dilemma and implications of his faith contextualize the story greatly as more of the technology and the events unfold. All told from letters of correspondence found in the future and translated. 

"The scene changed once more. Now I saw the city of clouds, as God sees it, and I discovered the source of energy that moved the vehicles, lifts, the unspeakable objects that flew through the heavens and, above all, that tortuous city. As if watching a documentary, I was shown the inside of those machines that infested the streets and how the perianth fed them. That world was a nightmare. Humanity had been reduced to fuel that moved the metal organs of that city."

Very Cool. I loved that one. All of the stories have illustrations, which were great. All of them felt fresh and different than most English works and predates most of them. Possibly inspiring the English ones that are as close to tropes of solarpunk as we have at the moment.

At only $4.99 USD or $14.99 USD for the paperback, it's a steal. A goal of the publisher is to pay more authors to contribute to more of these anthologies if they sell well.

Letter From A Thief

It feels like this year was just stolen from us. Stating the obvious, this has been a really shitty year for a myriad of reasons. This pandemic has stolen concerts, movies, and even going out to a restaurant. It’s made even an introvert like myself go out of his mind. One of the only things saving my sanity has been a handful of albums and tracks released this year that I can listen to while riding a bike or talking a walk around the neighborhood as I continue to wait for the world to come back. It’s been a long time since I’ve been back to this blog and I have to say I’m kinda pissed that I can’t add all the music videos to the list like the past, but that really keeps with the theme of disappointments in 2020. I’m gonna try not to go into these tracks with too much depth like I have in the past, but I’m not promising anything. Just remember this isn’t the best tracks of the year. It’s just the ones I enjoyed the most. Well, I’ve wasted enough time this year so let’s get to this list.

20.     Genocidal Humanoidz - System of a Down

           It’s been 15 freaking years since SOAD released new music and damn it was too long. The group has been rumored for years to be making a new album only to dash the hopes of fans, but 2020 finally saw the band release two new tracks. Always being very political, the increased tensions and fighting between Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh have brought the group out of hiding to drop a pair of bangers. All proceeds raised from the tracks have gone straight to humanitarian needs for displaced families of the war. The lead single, Protect the Land, was the main piece of work that address the bands emotions and feelings on the current situation, but they attached the previously written Genocidal Humanoidz to bring a little more heat and boy do they bring it. Both tracks are worthy of the band they come from, but Genocidal Humanoidz just gets the blood pumping like it’s the early 2000’s again.

19.     Oh My My - Blue October

           Blue October? Aren’t they just a one-hit wonder? Well kinda, as they only pushed into the mainstream stratosphere with their self-destructive anthem “Hate Me” in 2006. There have been a few gems here and there, but nothing that would really catch most people’s ears. However, this new release just has a bouncy infectious beat that draws you in. Just one of those tracks that makes a long car ride feel not that long. In a year that was filled with very little to feel good about this was a nice little bright spot.

18.     6 Feet Away - Chromeo

           So many bands tried to write songs that captured the feelings and political implications surrounding this pandemic, but nothing worked as well as the funky beats and soothing vocals of David "Dave 1" Macklovitch and Patrick "P-Thugg" Gemayel as they weave a tail of love, attraction, and social responsibility. There are so many clever lyrics that are laced through this jam it’s impressive how easy it’s also to just bob your head to the beat.

17.     I Want More - KALEO

           While this track was dropped before the pandemic was in full swing it encapsulates a feeling that a lot of people are experiencing because of it. The singer expresses this longing for emotional connection he is missing, but it’s not nearly as depressing as it sounds. The bluesy track manages to portray a sense of hopefulness that even though this connection is currently missing you feel that he will find it and somehow things will be alright. I think that’s a sentiment everyone wants to share in.

16.     Cyr - Smashing Pumpkins

           The Smashing Pumpkins, basically Billy Corgan at this point, have not been at the top of their game in a long time and while the album doesn’t offer a lot of praise, this track harkens back to the Cure/Depeche Mode sounds of the Smashing Pumpkins past. Easy listening synth lines drive the track forward and while the conclusion it pushes towards isn’t exciting the journey to get there is enjoyable.

15.     Red Skies (feat. Dr. Disrespect) - J + 1

           I know, let me explain. First, I’ll admit I’ve been stuck inside for most of this year working from home and I’ve been watching a little too much YouTube and Twitch streams, but dammit is Dr. Disrespect entertaining to watch. This Magnum P.I. mustache, Mel Gibson Lethal Weapon mullet sporting dude just has that je ne sais quoi. That being said, this little track feels like it was plucked right out of the 1980’s or at least from the soundtrack of that cool ass Ryan Gosling film ‘Drive’. The melodic synths that push the song through its sub 3-minute play time just vibe so well that when the guitar comes in the bridge it’s like you’re taking a neon trip to another time. I just love it, sorry not sorry.

14.     Ohms - Deftones

           Need me some Deftones, simple as that. Chino and company have delivered an album filled the aggressiveness of a 16-year-old. I’ll admit I didn’t gel with the whole album as much as previous entries, but this title track is a joy to listen to. The speedy guitar riffs and how the track itself just continues to pick up steam as it blazes toward the end is worth the price of entry in itself.

13.     Phobia - Nothing But Thieves

           It’s a known story that on Nirvana’s breakout album, ‘Nevermind’, the band was having a hard time recording the track ‘Lithium’ because Dave Grohl kept speeding the song up to a breakneck pace so they brought in a click track for him to stay on the correct pace. As Dave tells it, having to play to a click track is like having the human part of you just ripped out. In this track, it sounds like the band takes that click track and throws it out the fucking window around the 1:45 mark because this song builds and builds toward a manic conclusion that finishes with an orgasmic ending and if that’s not a human feeling I don’t know what is. In the words of 20-year-old, this track is a fucking banger.

12.     The Adults are Talking - The Strokes

           Honestly, this entire Strokes album could fill this list. This was my favorite album of the year and I could sit and listen to the whole thing front to back without skipping a track. That doesn’t happen a whole lot. This upbeat opener just sets the stage for an album that feels fresh and peppy. That’s saying something because most of the tracks are hitting around the 5-minute mark yet it never feels like it. The chorus is catchy, the verses are esoteric, and the track goes through several different instrumental shifts that it never gets boring or bogged down. Also, a highlight is Julian’s falsetto, which is actually really great. This track just paved the way for an album that I’d be listening to a lot.

11.     Caution - The Killers

           I’ve been listening to The Killers since 2004 when a friend gave me a copy of their debut album. Been a fan since then and while a lot of what they’ve released in the 2010’s has been a lot of hit or miss, there is always a few catchy gems in each album. This is certainly one of them. The track does lean on some of those Springsteen feelings that the band has become known for, but there’s no denying that The Killers can make some great heartland rock songs. Essentially, that’s what this song is falling back on. Brandon Flowers sings charismatically about how this woman protagonist isn’t going to follow the safe path traveled and she’s gonna throw caution to the wind and follow her dreams. It’s a track with an uplifting story and it’s got some great searing guitar riffs. I’m a simple man, I don’t need much.

10.     JU$T (feat. Pharrell Williams & Zack de la Rocha) - Run The Jewels

           It is amazing how smooth this track is because it dropped just as all the BLM and racial injustice issues started really gaining traction this last year like they wrote it the day it dropped. A song with a lyrical commentary on the unjust economic system in our county really hits home at the point in time that it was needed come out. Not only does this track have something to say, it also delivers its message in a slick way. El-P and Killer Mike breath fire, as they usually do, but the addition of Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine fame is really the cherry on top. The last time RTJ collaborated with Zack was for the amazing ‘Close Your Eyes (And Count to F**k)’, which was an amazing social commentary on the senseless violence between cops and minorities. This new track hits home just as hard.

9.     Must Stop (feat. Sarah Barthel of Phantogram)

           Give me a duet between a male and female singer, lyrics about their lack of self-worth, and constantly being emotionally hurt and you’ve got a hit ballad. Alright, I’ve just broken down this track to its most basic elements and if you didn’t know I could have easily been talking about ‘Somebody I Used to Know’ by Goyte. Still, it’s an contagious track that has been stuck in my head since it dropped in October.

8.     Think About Things - Daði Freyr

           This is the second Icelandic group to end up on my top song list this year and I blame social media for this one. This song was so catchy and the TikTok videos surrounding it made me laugh that it just ear-wormed its way into my head. The beat is so catchy and the background vocals are these heavenly voices that it’s hard not to tap your foot in beat with it. Also, one point of interest is the music video feels like it took the awkwardness right out of Napoleon Dynamite. That’s not a bad thing.

7.     Save Your Tears - The Weeknd

           I’m just gonna start by saying The Weeknd got freaking shafted at the Grammys this year. This is my favorite album he’s put out since I downloaded the ‘House of Balloons’ mix tape in 2011 and the best direction change for an artist in the last decade. The introduction of the 80’s synths and groovy basslines are so contagious that the internet roar from the lack of any acknowledgement from the academy was completely justified in my eyes. This track in particular features a shimmering melody as Abel bears his relationship failings. The opening bassline is more addictive than the cocaine Abel sung about on ‘Can’t Feel My Face’. It’s simply a well-made and beautiful piece of pop music. And if you ask why ‘Blinding Lights’ isn’t on my list it’s because it dropped as a single in 2019 and it’s already on that list.

6.     Lost in Yesterday - Tame Impala

           Some songs make my top lists for reasons that don’t necessarily have anything to do with how the song is constructed. While this track from Tame Impala is certainly catchy it makes it so far up my list for another reason. Kevin Parker echoes the nostalgia of old memories and how even the bad ones turn into good ones after enough time goes by. This track dragged up memories of driving 50+ miles in the wrong direction with my best friend as we made our way to Havasu. That was a shitty experience that turned into one of the fondest memories I have of a friend that’s no longer around to make more of those memories with. The song asks, “Does it help to get lost in yesterday” and I can answer this one very clearly. Yes, yes it does.

5.     At the Door - The Strokes

           This is the most stripped back The Strokes have ever been. They tried something in this vain back with ‘Call Me Back’ on their album Angles, but not to this result. Typically, the vocals are layered behind a wall of guitars, bass, and distortion, but here Julian’s vocals are laid bare and it rightfully calls more attention to the emotions of the song. Emotions are what you really must hold onto in a Strokes song because like the previous entry, these lyrics are shrouded in metaphors. It certainly doesn’t take away from the track because the feeling of dread and being unable to escape comes across clearly as the heavy synths propel you forward. When the bridge finally comes in with its angelic vocals and 70’s induced sound waves it’s just a pleasure to listen to.

4.     No Time to Die - Billie Eilish

           Trying to follow singers Adele and Sam Smith can’t be an easy task, but especially following them in singing the opening number to the next Bond film. Thinking of singers that could fill those shoes I struggle to understand how the pop sensation Billie Eilish came to be the one producers turned to, but damn does it work. The melody is quintessential Bond. The horns, the background strings, and orchestral flourishes are all tried and true parts of a Bond song, but Eilish surprisingly works well in those confines and even reaches beyond her normal range in the backend of the track to show us she’s more than the whisper quiet singer we typically hear. There is still a lot here that is classic Eilish and it does change the normal Bond track from these high soaring ballads into something I’d say is more noir and moodier. I think the best description would be to call this a PB and chocolate accident. I didn’t think they’d go together, but they really do.

3.     Dragonball Durag - Thundercat

This song is like being soulfully harmonized by a R&B group in front of a fire, but the fire is coming from a dumpster. There is some amazing basslines coming out of this track and Thundercat marriages them perfectly to some truly funny lines that had me chuckling while I grooved along with the song. The vocal delivery is perfect and it brought back memories of my #2 song of 2016, Childish Gambino’s ‘Redbone’. I can certainly use more of these groovy tracks in my life.

2.     Ode to the Mets - The Strokes

Like I said way back over there, The Strokes album could have filled my entire list, but this ending track takes the number 2 spot on this year’s list. The closing ballad goes through a roller coaster of melodic changes while keeping the tonal feeling of disappointment towards something or someone remains constant. Others have tried to decipher exactly what is being said and it’s always different. I think it’s up to the listener to determine and it’s different for everyone. We’ve all got someone or something we love, but continues to come up short. I think the best thing about this track is how it’s able to build a sense of urgency, but still end up in a quiet place but the end. Sort of like the ending of The Graduate. Yeah, this song is the end of The Graduate. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1.     Run - Joji

There is a pitch perfect clarity to Joji that he never displayed before. Let’s be clear here, this is not a classically trained singer. This is a former crass YouTuber that has somehow belted out the most beautiful ballad this year for me. This really came out of the proverbial left field and actually shocked me. While previous works have relied on R&B and keyboard hooks, this track features an electric guitar that is woven through the track, but as the bridge comes the guitar flies into an amazing solo performance and builds and builds with a wail as Joji comes in for the finish with “I know you’ve not in love”. This is a dark morose track that fills the room with a vague sadness and the soaring guitar finish is just the high this low needs. I absolutely loved it.

I’m Keeping Things In Perspective, Pittsburgh Pirates

My Dearest Pittsburgh Pirates,

Believe me, I’m not allowing myself to get too excited. Or at least I’m trying my hardest. After sweeping the Tigers to begin the season 3-0, there were reasons to be slightly more optimistic after what the offseason made me believe. This week took that a tiny step further. A two-game series against the Twins and a four-game series against the Reds isn’t any type of ultimate test, though the Twins are in first place and were a playoff team last year. You were only able to split the series with them but that’s acceptable even at home. The Cincinnati Reds are a team that’s basically been rebuilding since the 2013 Wildcard game, but more specifically over the last two years. Last season, they were in last place and finished 68-94. You played them nineteen times. You went 6-13 with them outscoring you 84-60. Honestly, I was surprised you won six. It felt like they beat you every time. This weekend you set the tone winning three out of four and blew a 4-0 lead in the game you lost. Not that blowing leads is something to hang your hat on, but they were mostly overmatched. That 14-3 thumping on Thursday got the series off to the right start. Your offense has been the driving force behind your 7-2 start. Your .814 team OPS ranks second in all of baseball. You’re averaging over six runs per game. Seven of the eight players in your everyday lineup have an OPS over .800. Three of them are over .900. The pitching talent you have faced so far has been less than stellar but last year you didn’t rip crappy pitching. So far, you have and I welcome the change.

This offense could be something special. Obviously, it’s hard to rely on any of the stats this early but the numbers currently speak for themselves. The biggest differences from last year so far (other than JHay and Mercer having an OPS over .800) is the newest additions, Colin Moran and Corey Dickerson. They have combined for 2 home runs and 15 RBI’s. Dickerson splits of .303/.324/.576 make for a .900 OPS. That .324 OBP is a little low but that slugging percentage more than makes up for it. He has a history of being a streaky player so there are sure to be slumps in the future. I love what I’m seeing especially adding another lefty power bat to the lineup. Moran is the same way. His splits of .345/.387/.517 make for a .904 OPS. If he keeps up at anything resembling this pace, he could make the Cole trade worth it and can make this lineup top tier. That’s if Gregory Polanco keeps playing like he’s been playing and can stay healthy. I have thought prior times that he could finally breakout but I have been disappointed when he hasn’t. This feels different. I still don’t trust his ability to stay healthy, but he looks like a different player. He already has 3 homers and his 13 RBI’s leads the league. His splits of .310/.447/.759 for a 1.206 OPS are video game like. He could change this entire team. If he keeps playing like this, he will be one of the best players in the league. We saw for a few years what that can do to a lineup. But for any of that to come to fruition, he needs to remain healthy. That could determine the outcome of your entire season.

With so much praise, I feel the need to be critical. I am a Pittsburgh Pirates’ fan after all. The pitching needs to improve in both facets. The starting pitching statistically has been strong. The starters’ ERA (3.14) ranks 4th in the majors, the batting average against (.225) is 7th, the WHIP (1.18) ranks 10th, and the OPS against (.637) is 6th. Those are all much better numbers than I expected going into the season. There is an issue that needs rectified. The starters so far have averaged pitching 5.74 innings per start and that number is only that high because of Jameson Taillon. The rest of the starters (Nova, Williams, Kuhl, and Brault in place of the injured Musgrove) have rarely went past five innings and that’s not sustainable especially with question marks in the bullpen. The relievers overall numbers are bad. The relievers WHIP, the most important stat for a reliever, is 1.56 which ranks 28th in the majors. Their batting average against (.252) is 28th and their OPS against (.775) is 26th. There have been positives like Edgar Santana (0.60 WHIP) who has solidified his role as fourth in line. Felipe Rivero, George Kontos, and Michael Feliz all have elevated WHIPs but that’s due to each of them having one bad outing. The rest of the time they have been terrific. The rest of the bullpen has not. Doyydas Neverauskas has been terrible like blowing a two-run lead on Saturday that led to the lone loss in the Reds’ series. Josh Smoker doesn’t appear to be someone who should be on a major league roster and Tyler Glasnow nor recently promoted Clay Holmes can be relied on in any high leverage situations. That’s why longer outings from the starters is so paramount. You can’t pitch the same four relievers every night. You need to find better options than Smoker or Neverauskas (Schugel or Siegrist?) or you will keep getting burned like you did Saturday. Something to consider.

I mentioned Jameson Taillon but I felt it was necessary to expand after his performance yesterday. Taillon pitched the game of his life and looked like a true ace. He threw a one-hit, complete game shutout in your 5-0 victory over the Reds. He walked two and struck out seven over 110 pitches. It was a masterful performance. Combine that with his first solid start in the home opener on Tuesday (5 1/3 IP 4 H 2 ER 0 BB 9 K) and he walks away as the National League Player of the Week. After two starts, he sports a 1.26 ERA and a 0.49 WHIP. Taillon is in the same category as Polanco. He looks different. He looks like he could be stepping into elite status this year, but only if he can stay healthy. The Polanco situation is even different because Adam Frazier isn’t a bad option to fill in during a DL stint. That’s not the case with Taillon. There is no reasonable replacement. He’s the unquestioned ace of this staff and he’s one of the few that can go at least seven innings on a regular basis.  For you to be successful, he needs to make it to thirty starts this season. I believe he’s capable. I also believe that now would be the time to try and sign him to a contract extension. With his injury issues and the fact that he’s not a Scott Boras client, it could be possible to get him at a realistic rate. If you wait until after this season and he ends up as one of the best starters in baseball, it might be too late. Something to consider.

Today was supposed to be the beginning of your series against the Cubs but snow showers, in April, cancelled it. Fortunately, because it’s their home opener, there was an off day scheduled tomorrow so it will be made up then. They also play them Wednesday and Thursday before travelling to Miami to face the last place, rebuilding Marlins. The Cubs are 5-4 and hold second place in the division. They are the odds-on pick to win the division and contend for the World Series. Jake Arrieta is gone but they retooled their rotation signing both Yu Darvish and Tyler Chatwood after trading for Jose Quintana last year.  They still have a quality lineup, so they are your tallest task in what should be a competitive division. Miami was expected to have the worst team this year after trading away their entire outfield for prospects. They are 3-6 and should be a team you beat down, even on the road. A 4-2 week would be terrific. I’m very interested to see how this offense does against pitching like the Cubs and to see how you generally stack up against that team. It’s still early but your performance in that series could show early signs of your true potential. I’m trying not to get ahead of myself but a good performance in that series could get me more excited. Just keep doing what you have been doing and this season could be more interesting than anticipated. Good luck and talk to you next week!
