tale of woe
ARTICULO MORTIS- the moment of death
(Reblogs/comment are appreciated, I read every tag! :3 See under the read-more for an alternate version without the lighting effect, notes on details, as well as a copy of the final sketch)
The constellation is one of the two mentioned during Cassandra's stargazing scene, Ursa Major. The other, Orion the Hunter, was already featured in my previous piece, Stargazer.
Having a 'halo' of red around her head was one of my earliest concept points for this piece, in reference to her cult ending.
In Romeo & Juliet, Juliet's decision to end her life isn't just about her grief over Romeo, it's the knowledge that her only real options are either to die or to be sent off to live as a nun. When so much of her story is already about trying to choose her own fate, to avoid the life that has been planned out for her, it's easier to understand her final decision. Anywho, the real point of this paragraph is that this is why the left side of the piece features a church building.
The circular window in the church has 8 slices, each with a color representing one of the 7 routes, plus a bonus one for Mia. The colors are all eye-dropped from the character sprites, minus Miranda's, which I selected from the piece I did for her.
The three graves on the left are for the Stans. One of them literally says STAN, one is blank, and the last one has the initials R.S. (Rebecca Stan). On the right side we have a grave for the MC, partially since they die in the cult ending, partially because the right side is more symbolic of the play's canon ending, so the MC's grave is really Romeo's grave.
The main color for the curtains was taken from Cassandra's default sprite, specifically her shirt, because why not? Similarly, the color for the boards/stage at the bottom is taken from her pants. Because why not?
technically the flowers in her hand are supposed to be roses, but I realized about halfway through this piece that over the years my simplified way of drawing roses has gradually turned into just drawing tulips. oops. seriously tho, oops. also realized that this one pan I use for cooking, which I always thought was an 8x8 pan, is actually a 9x9 pan. which explains several recurring difficulties with some of my favorite baking recipes. guess I'm just a silly goose
this had so many layers holy fuck. I used the same file for the original pose sketches, as well as a bunch of reference photos, but even with that in mind it's crazy that this had over 70 layers. by the end there's still, like, 20 active ones. each section had a separate layer for the outline + the color, another couple layers for the banner on bottom, one for lighting, and then the constellation was it's own layer.
Final outline sketch:
Version without the lighting effect (which is intended to mimic the way stained glass looks when hit by sunshine):
#j does art#resident lover#resident lover spoilers#cassandra dimitrescu#this. is kind of. technically r&j fan art.#BUT I ONLY DID IT FOR CASSANDRA OKAY

On the left is the sprite sheet for the Pico-8 game I made for my wife for Christmas 2016
On the right, the sprite sheet for the sequel I'm currently working on.
You'd think "of course you'd get better with 8 years of regular practice" except this difference is like 2% practice and 98% adoption of a process:
Look at a lot of reference art
Just keep on stirring the pixels around until it looks good
Notably step two doesn't really scale so working on subjects bigger than 8x8 is terrifying to me 😂
Reference art is hugely important, as it turns out. You know how the 90s Rare games everyone loves only had like four biomes? It's because they only had one shelf of reference books and Twycross is too remote to drive to the library.

I wonder if the icon of Ines's third skill is a reference to her describing the Doctor as the player who sees other people as nothing but game pieces.
The red square can be seen as a chessboard, and you can interpret the tower icon as either RI or a Rook, which makes her a Bishop. For those who don't know the chess rules, the Rook moves in straight lines, horizontally and vertically, while the Bishop moves in diagonal lines, hence the diagonal facing swords. There is also a special rule that allows the Rook and the King to do a combo move, but only if neither of them have moved yet, so there is a certain merit in keeping them stationary and fighting with other pieces, which is the point of this skill.
Another little detail is that at max mastery this skill hits 6 targets it passes through. Chess board is 8x8, meaning the longest straight line is 8 squares: you start on one, pass six and land on the seventh.
You can also argue that freely moving around the board makes her a Queen (and she certainly is in my heart), but it loses the Rook comparison (unless the icon is supposed to be a combination of the Rook and the Bishop). In-story, I would also expect someone like Kal'tsit to be the Queen instead.
#Arknights#Ines#Ines Arknights#it's kinda funny how i spent half of my school life in advanced math class#and we solved chess related problems pretty often there#but i never actually learned how to properly play it#i know how figures move#but if you ask me anything more complex than that#i have no idea#theories and headcanons

Decided today I was going to learn how to do pixel art. For some reason, that meant starting with making myself, I guess.
I did the first one in paint.net, using a 16x16 canvas. Numbers were kind of an educated guess--I figured 8x8 was going to be too small.
Just used the base color palette available 'cause I didn't want to think about choosing colors. Ended up not finding any good skin colors, so I just did white, tho posting on tumblr has seemed to have eaten my arms. Not terrible. Not great.
Second one done in LibreSprite after hearing a lot of people recommend using Aseprite. 32x32 canvas, also base color palette. I like it a lot better and feel rather accomplished lol, tho I do know I have a lot to learn.
(Especially on sizing for posting to social media. Both pictures were blown up to 600% after creation--is that a good workflow? Is there a better way for posting small pixel art like this??)
Tomorrow's goal is going to be using references and editing premade sprites to learn, since I've seen that recommended a few times. Maybe watch a few videos/find a tutorial series I like.

Rain showers
I had a lovely ride with Hero this morning; we fit it in right between two rain showers. Had to use the saddle, because our bareback pad is at college with my daughter (wah!) and it was too challenging a ride for true bareback to be comfortable for either of us. We rode up a trail that I had just meticulously done maintenance on, then d-o-w-n a trail that needs some work. He was miffed that he had to step over a down tree at one point, and I almost didn't make it under two overhanging branches! The saddle felt uncomfortable for both of us (as far as I can tell, he's pretty low-key) and I'm considering just getting a second bareback pad. I'm delighted that my daughter has a friend to ride with at school, but I'm not sure I can live without one.
There is a network of old logging roads, older logging roads, and even older fragments of horse-logging roads from several timber harvests in the 20th century. There is one little offshoot that I have actually never walked down (thorns. Lots of them), but I'm wondering if I took the saw and the pruning shear up there someday, if I might not find a nice little side trail that would get me around a steep spot I don't like very much. Perhaps I will vanish into the woods next week and see how doable that project would be.
At any rate, we got back to the barn j-u-s-t as the rain started up again, so that felt like good luck.
I then put down a colored 'primer' coat of paint for a really nifty new painting
(Here will be a Mage! and a dragon! Maybe! If I can do what I hope I can with the reference photo)
Then my luck for the day ran out. I spent the rest of the afternoon struggling with the concept of galvanic cells, and I have a troubling suspicion that my son's lab results are dramatically wrong. And if something got measure well-and-truly wrong, how is he supposed to do the follow-up assignment? Also spent some time down at Home Farm with my husband, trying to (at least temporarily) fix a badly off-kilter cellar door. The whole frame, which is composed of chunky 8x8 inch timbers, was warped. We had to prop up the frame on a brick, adjust it very roughly with a pry bar, and then jam the door closed. It is now non-openable until the frame is fixed in a more OSHA-approved manner. That whole project was miserable.
I think I'll read quietly, now. I'm DONE.
(truly, a bareback pad is a comfy, utilitarian marvel, and I only wish I had known they existed YEARS ago)

File: Jeepers Creepers
SCP#: ACA
Code Name: The Creeper/ Every 23 years on the 23rd day of March, it gets to eat.
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-ACA-Alpha is contained at within a magnetic locked coffin, located in an 8x8 meter containment cell within Site-AF. The coffin is engraved with thaumaturgic sigils created to weaken SCP-ACA-Alpha and prevent him from summoning SCP-ACA-Omega or any SCP-ACA-Beta instances. There are four hidden sentry turrets in the walls of the containment cell that will only activate if the magnetic locks of SCP-ACA-Alpha's coffin ever fail. A Foundation researcher and two Armed Guards are to enter SCP-ACA-Alpha's containment cell on a daily basis to ensure there are no faults with its containment.
SCP-ACA-Omega is kept at Site-AD with an 20x20x20 meter experimental magnetic field containment cell. The magnetic field is able to keep SCP-ACA-Omega floating perfectly in the middle of the cell. Outside of the containment cell, Foundation engineers are to check and repair the magnetic cores on a daily basis. Within the containment cell, A specialized AFA-3 is to check that the magnetic field is working without fault. The AFA-3 is equipped with specialized skin that prevents its metal skeleton from getting affected by the magnetism and its synthetic body doesn't get crushed by the resulting artificial gravity.
All recovered SCP-ACA-Beta instances are contained at Site-AA within weapon cases, placed in the cursed item storage unit. Foundation researchers Level 2 Clearance or higher are allowed to request testing with SCP-ACA-Beta instances at any time. The Department of Technology, Alchemy, Science, Magic, and Warfare is conducting experiments to see if it's possible to replicate SCP-ACA-Beta instances and their anomalous properties.
Description: SCP-ACA-Alpha, is a humanoid monster, standing at the average human height of 5.6 ft. However, the entity has dark grey reptilian-like skin and has two retractable wings on its back, able to extend to 12 feet width. Both wings are bat-like in nature and despite their fragile appearance, are as durable as steel. SCP-ACA-Alpha's dark grey skin seems to be a mix of reptilian and insectoid in texture, making it barely recognizable to any organism in nature. The entity also possesses white hair on the back of its head and strange insectoid webbed appendages as well. These appendages seem to both serve intimidation purposes as well as assistance for hibernation.
Despite its lack of human qualities, DNA testing has shown that each part of SCP-ACA-Alpha's body belongs to a different deceased or declared missing person. According to eyewitness accounts before being amnestied, SCP-ACA-Alpha hunts for victims in order to keep its body going by harvesting organs or body parts to replace its own. The entity is somehow always able to tell which body parts on a person are most beneficial for its body. Furthermore, when an organ or body part is successfully harvested from the victim, it not only rapidly attaches to SCP-ACA-Alpha but also transforms to resemble the rest of the entity's body as if it's always been that way. It should also be noted that SCP-ACA-Alpha can replace its own head as well, as it been decapitated on numerous occasions yet was always able to replace it with a head from its past victims.
For body parts not used for SCP-ACA-Alpha's own body, the entity instead uses the body parts to craft weapons and tools. These anomalous items are referred to as SCP-ACA-Beta instances. Each instance is able to levitate on the entities command, never miss the intended target, and the quality as well as sharpness of each weapon never dulls. Shockingly these properties can be utilized without SCP-ACA-Alpha, thought its quite easy for fatal accidents to occur.
The most dangerous creation of the entity is SCP-ACA-Omega, which is a vehicle made from different parts of different vehicles, some of which are a century old. SCP-ACA-Omega, despite not being cybernetic, has various traps and mechanisms hidden all over. Such as, a hidden harpoon hook in its exhaust pipe, drone-like explosives that seek out whoever SCP-ACA-Alpha is hunting, and spears that can shoot out of any surface of SCP-ACA-Omega. Though the vehicle's most terrifying property is its ability to reflect every form of damage that comes at it. Whether it be a throwing knife, rifle shots, shotgun shells, even a rocket launcher will bounce off and flying right back at the one who fired.
SCP-ACA-Omega has also shown no signs of sentience yet is able to move on its own when called by SCP-ACA-Alpha. Additionally, when SCP-ACA-Omega is left alone it has shown to possess the unique ability absorb car parts and even basic metal to maintain itself. How this is possible is unknown as SCP-ACA-Omega has no anomalous radiation or particles and possesses no thaumaturgic markings or residue. Though it should be noted that this anomalous property is why it was given the most extensive of containment procedures of the three.
SCP-ACA as a whole, was discovered in 2001 during a series of attacks taking place all across [data expunged], Florida, finally leading to the local police station. It revealed itself while committing a massive slaughter of prisoners, police, and one unfortunate civilian. After it escaped, Foundation agents tried to pick up its trail as well as administer amnestics to all witnesses. SCP-ACA-Alpha was tracked by Foundation satellites until it finally stopped in [data expunged], California. How SCP-ACA-Alpha was able to cover such a distance in a single day and why it did so is unknown.
Mobile Task Force Epsilon-6 "Village Idiot's" went to the [data expunged] ranch and found SCP-ACA-Alpha, hiding among the scarecrows. The squad of 10 units suffered massive losses, equating to a total 6 casualties and a civilian casualty, that civilian being the youngest son of the ranch owner. Only after prolonged and excessive firepower was SCP-ACA-Alpha finally weakened and contained. Afterwards the O5 Council assigned all Foundation agents around the U.S. to find any traces of SCP-ACA-Alpha leading to the discovery of its various lairs throughout the country. Its massive collection of SCP-ACA-Beta instances, and eventually SCP-ACA-Omega itself were located and contained.
Both the rancher and his surviving son contributed to the capturing of SCP-ACA-Alpha. As such, under Protocol "Sole Survivor" they were given the option to either be amnestied with compensation money or join the Foundation. Both surprisingly accepted, the son is now a member MTF Epsilon-6 while the father became a member of Mobile Task Force Artemis-6 "Wild Hunt".

Back in 2019/2020 I did resprites of the Mega Man 1 Robot Masters to match the quality of later games. Today I made some slight edits to update them. (Here’s the old sprites for reference)
So! Here’s a list of changes!
• Cut Man and Guts Man are unchanged, they were already ✨perfect✨(Fun Fact: Guts Man’s face uses two tiles in the original sprite and mine!)
• Ice Man’s face was slightly adjusted so it fits within an 8x8 tile
• Bomb Man’s hand was tweaked, and the white on his ear was removed since it was outside an 8x8 area for the eyes and there was not enough detail to justify an extra tile.
• Fire Man had some tweaks to his highlights, I added the zipper-like detail back to his pants, and adjusted his mouthpiece.
• Elec Man had his arms changed to match his original sprite better, and the white on his ear was removed for the same reason Bomb Man’s was.
From the First Numbers it’s kind of convenient that Rock and Roll filled out the missing two entries to round that batch out to a full 8 like every other game. I also find it funny that Time Man was the only wholly original addition to Mega Man: Powered Up since we now know Oil Man and Bond Man were the two “missing” Robot Masters from the first game. I may do updates/customs for those in the future but for now I’m just really happy to have a Guts Man sprite that matches well with Stone Man and Concrete Man!
If I can thank my interest in Mega Man for anything it’s becoming acquainted with NES hardware limitations for graphics 😂

Writing/Art Update 2/21/2023
Well, I’ve been writing my sentences, and it’s going pretty good. I'm not sure I would go much further than that, but I’ve been writing every day, and not torturing myself too much over doing it or not doing it. Also, I do actually refer to them as "my sentences," like I am constantly thinking "I need to write my sentences," like an old person referring to their soap operas as "my stories."
The Story, which was in past tense last week, is now back in present tense. It is 6408 words, an increase of 4,640. Now, some of that was stuff that was in the original version and got copied over, but there’s a lot of new stuff, too. It’s true that I have been writing sentences every day, but am I advancing the plot? Hmm. That remains to be seen. Mostly, what happens is that I’ll be doing the dishes and thinking about My Daily Sentence, and I’ll be like “I think they should go play football with some street kids” and then that’s what I write. Was there anything on the outline about football? Reader, there was not. There are many things on the outline, actually, that I have not bothered to write or even think about. I am not going to finish the story until I write the things on the outline, and yet, here we are. On the other hand, I have named a Rukongai district. I invented some hohou techniques. Everyone went to the post office. I suppose it doesn’t really matter what happens in this fanfic. It is liminal. It doesn’t really matter what happens in this fanfic. It is a fanfic.
A long time ago, I realized that any fanfic writer who stays in the same fandom for a long time and writes enough will eventually get high on their own supply and start writing bizarro stuff that is only of interest to them (and possibly, like 3 of their super-fans). Anyway, I always knew this would happen to me, but this is not at all what I expected it to feel like.
In not-entirely-unrelated news, I have decided to do a little art study/exploration of some, i dunno, skulls and monsters and zabimarus, things of that nature. Gonna try out some different tools and styles and try not to spend too long on any one thing. I did some Menos this weekend and I am hoping to do some more this week.
Not a great baking week, tbh. I made these sourdough brownies, and accidentally baked them in an 8x8 pan instead of a 9x9. I do not recommend this. Brownie recipes always recommend you take them out when they are not all the way done, and they continue to bake in the pan, except that when they are not at all done, they do not get much more done than that. The good news is that I learned that you can re-bake underdone brownies if you need. In this case, it took baking them even longer than the original bake time and was a huge pain because I kept checking on them and checking on them, which made it take even longer. Anyway, when they finally finished, they were pretty good, but very, very rich. (Ice cream helped, as it often does) I also made some sourdough bagels, which took a lot longer to proof than I expected (which I guess worked out, since the brownies were in the oven during the time I wanted the bagels to be in the oven). They were pretty good, I guess, but I think I like my usual bagel recipe better. I had flipped the day-night schedule of the steps (there’s 12 hours between, so it doesn’t really matter), and I think I might try them again, flipping it back as written. Bagels are very popular in my house. Were banana muffins also this week? I guess so. I also made banana muffins. They were okay, but I think the blueberry ones were better.

N Music/Lyrics/Video: Subete Anata No Sei Desu. Singer: Utane Uta/Defoko
is the flesh natural?
国道沿いの海で、可視光線が笑い。 斜め後ろの熱病は、推敲を重ねると言う。 天狗の面を被った、懐かしい栄養が。 ゴミ捨て場から飛び降りて、 明日が転がった。
On the sea along the national highway, the visible rays of light laugh. The fever diagonally behind me, it says that the revisions repeat. A nostalgic nourishment put on a tengu mask. Jumping from the garbage collection point, tomorrow fell over.
放射状の四季と、 それを食べる怖さ。 つま先立ちでも、足りないのです。 因数分解とオタマジャクシは、 刃物で日記を混ぜました。
The radial four seasons, and the fear that eats that. Standing on my tiptoes is not enough. The tadpole and factorisation were mixed into my diary by a sharp object.
私は細胞ですが、 肉はエヌですか? ギザ十が泣いていました、 井戸は見えますか?
I may be a cell, But is the flesh ‘N’? The jaggy 10-yen coin [1] was crying, Can the well be seen?
お地蔵様は緩み、アナクロの曇り雨。 夢見心地のビーカーは、妙な感じがすると言う。 無痛の地下室では、白夜とは呼べないが。 ぬいぐるみが溺れていた、 待ち合わせの音。
The jizos softened under the anachrome rain from a cloudy sky The beaker in a dream-like state, it is said that it felt strange. Though, in the healthy basement, I could not call it a midnight sun. The plush toys drowned, It was the sound of the rendezvous.
紙粘土が暮らす、 除草剤のままで。 檻の曜日より、葦が行う。 デジタルデータは今でも達磨で、 8×8=64の名残です。
The papier-mâché lives as a herbicide. From the day of the jail, the reeds were carried out. The digital data that is still on the daruma now is what remains from 8x8=64.
私は細胞ですが、 肉はエヌですか? ギザ十が泣いていました、 井戸は見えますか?
I may be a cell, But is the flesh ‘N’? The jaggy 10-yen coin was crying, Can the well be seen?
新しい解剖は、有り得べき。 それに気がついても、おびやかされ。 確証バイアス達は、 斯く語りき。
The new dissection should be possible. Even when I realised that, I felt threatened. Thus spoke The confirmation biases. [2]
私は細胞ですが、 肉はエヌですか? ギザ十が泣いていました、 井戸は見えますか?
I may be a cell, But is the flesh ‘N’? The jaggy 10-yen coin was crying, Can the well be seen?
私は細胞ですが、 肉はエヌですか? ギザ十が泣いていました、 井戸は見えますか?
I may be a cell, But is the flesh ‘N’? The jaggy 10-yen coin was crying, Can the well be seen?
何が見えますか?
What is it that can be seen?
---------------------
Notes: 1 - Refers to an old type of 10-yen coin produced between 1951 and 1958 that had a jagged edge. 2 - Reference to Also Sprach Zarathustra (one of the title’s Japanese translations being ツァラトゥストラは斯く語りき)
---------------------
Bonus translator's thoughts: Given the mathematical references, it's possible that 'N' here could be the symbol for natural numbers, thus when the singer asks 'is the flesh "N"', aside from the obvious 'niku starts with the letter N' thing, they could be asking if the flesh is natural. What does this have to do with the overall meaning of the song? I don't know.
#utane uta#defoko#utau#subeana#subete anata no sei desu#n#エヌ#music#translation#this one was slightly hard because i was worried that i was too literal with the translation and lost something#and also because the grammar in some of the parts was a little vague#but to be fair the almost word salad lyrics is kinda the charm of pseudo-xx style songs

Don't forget Bluesky. There's a known and very nasty incident with one of the staff members there that you can't even obliquely refer to without eating a permaban and even though the platform is foss it all orchestrates through a central server and functions as a walled garden. If they want you banned, you're banned, and that level of rallying around a bad administrator usually signals the beginning of the end for any sort of forum or social network.
(random plug for any of the mastodons about romhacking, the entire federation there is chill and low drama if you want to laugh at dumb news stories and fight about how hard it is to draw a proper heart in 8x8 pixels)
now that trump has tiktok, twitter, facebook and insta in his pocket, get ready for a massive wave of internet censorship. one of trump's greatest weapons has always been misinformation; it's going to become harder and harder to spread facts and criticism going forward. posts that aren't made invisible will be magically ignored by the algorithm. dissidents will have their accounts deleted and voices erased.
this is a suppression tactic. this is another stage of fascism.

Why Cloud-Based PBX Solutions Matter for Your Business
Cloud-based PBX solutions are transforming how businesses communicate. By removing the need for physical hardware, companies can reduce costs, improve scalability, and provide employees with flexible, remote access. These solutions offer features such as call forwarding, voicemail, call analytics, and integration with CRM systems, which help businesses improve their operations and deliver superior customer service.
In addition, cloud-based systems ensure better reliability, uptime, and security than traditional phone systems. With business continuity at the forefront, a cloud-based PBX minimizes the risk of downtime and keeps your communication channels open, even during emergencies.
