Newport News Restaurant Week Jan 21-Feb 4

The Newport News Hospitality Association (NNHA) is pleased to host the fourth-annual Restaurant Week!

Dine out and celebrate Newport News Restaurant Week, Saturday, January 21 - Saturday, February 4, 2017. Local restaurants will serve two-course lunch for $10.00 and/or three-course dinner for $20.00 and/or $30.00 (price does not include tax and gratuity).

Thanks to contributors within the Yelp community, we’re pleased to give you a glimpse into each participating restaurant.

Al Fresco – 11710 Jefferson Ave

While Shane C is “pretty hard person to impress with food quality, atmosphere and the whole dining experience” he cannot “brag enough about this place.” His item of choice is the Vitello alla Marsala – veal scaloppini sautéed with mushrooms & finished in a marsala wine sauce.

Wyatt N and his wife “started with the cheese plate and the grits with prawns, chorizo, and Brie... I had the lamb burger and fries. My wife had the corn and rice penne with shrimp and scallops. If clouds were made of honey, they'd taste like Circa's honey gelato. That's how I finished off dinner while my wife enjoyed her milk chocolate creme brûlée.”

According to Caitlyn B, “the crab dip is the best thing I've ever eaten, seriously. I would order it in bulk if I could. Draft beer is mostly local. Ordered crab legs, clams, oysters Rockefeller, and fries and everything was perfect.”

Cory N’s “dining experience won a prize in my mouth that I didn't think existed in Newport News. I had the sous vide salmon with black garlic sous vide salmon, truffle potato puree, local mushrooms, local beets, local spinach mustard, and organic truffle oil. Holy cow, I had an out of this world experience.

“Excellent coffees, baked goods, breakfast and lunch entrees. Consistently divine. Bev P’s “current obsession is the loaded grits, replete with an egg, bacon crumbles, scallions, and avocado... Yum.”

For those with big appetites, follow what Michael B did. “First thing I tried was the barbecue shrimp appetizer. The shrimp where wrapped in bacon and smothered in a nice barbecue sauce.  The shrimp where large sized and cooked well. The steamed platter–shrimp, oysters, muscles was very good. Everything tasted very fresh.  The fish tacos where very good. Lightly friend and not over bearing. Everything inside the taco flowed well together.

Po' boys are one of Bill V’s all-time favorite sandwiches. Man, am I glad I ordered that sandwich. A hoagie roll piled so high with hot, perfectly fried, and very tasty, medium shrimp, they threatened to topple off and I questioned if I would be able to close the roll and eat it! Piled even higher were the hand-cut fries

Rose M calls The Melting Pot “one of the best places for a date night. The uniqueness is the ability to cook and dip/marinate your food. Your table is turned into a heating unit. First course chosen may bring out cheese.  You are given an assortment of bread and vegetables to dip in the sauce. Your main course is brought next with your new dipping pot. Did you choose a wine based broth? Dip and cook your vegetables, steak, shrimp and chicken until your preference is met... Finish your meal with a new pot of chocolate! S'mores, anyone? White chocolate? Pineapples, poundcake, strawberries, bananas and graham crackers to dip away.”

Aimee J, a native of NY grew up where she had many different ethnic foods from around the world. “The last time I had excellent Middle Eastern food was while in New York. That is how Saffron is. The most delicious food I have had in a very long time. We started with the Babaganoush appetizer. My husband dislikes eggplant but he tore through that appetizer very quickly. My husband had the lamb burger and I had the falafel platter. It was so good and what flavors!”

“The ambience is comfortable and intimate, dimly lit with wine bottles on display. It's a very classy steakhouse. Great restaurant for a special occasion dinner. Keep it under your watch, fellas.” Gem M indulged in “a medium-rare filet mignon with a twice-baked potato and asparagus. I've got to say, this was probably one of the best steaks I've ever had. Overall, it was an excellent experience. Super attentive staff, unforgettable food, and a classy venue.”

“The espresso-lime-rubbed carpaccio with corn salsa had great flavor and melted in your mouth.  The Thai-poppin shrimp were fried crispy and served drenched in a mouth-watering sweet and spicy glaze.  The mini pork shanks were plump and meaty and came coated in a bourbon BBQ sauce over a yummy bleu cheese slaw.”  This is exactly what Jim B has been looking for in Newport News, “a classy bar with delicious food and an affordable and excellent drink selection.”

Mellisa R’s recommendation is to “order a cold beverage and the mussels. This is possibly the most under appreciated appetizer on the menu. The buttery, creamy broth is perfect and it comes with lightly toasted bread, perfect for dipping and getting every last drop of golden delightful sauce.”

“This is the place to go in Newport News if you want good authentic Italian food. The food is well priced, fresh, and flavorful. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful. This is where my husband and I go when we need our fix of Italian food.” Chris M gets the trio parmigiana–veal, chicken, and shrimp. “The garlic knots will blow your mind and the Chianti pairs great with all the red sauce dishes.”

“The meats and vegetables are served in small portions.” Izell T recommends you “think of this as a meat smorgasbord, but this is a good thing, you’re assisted with individual tongs... The best part for me was the beef tenderloin and the pineapples. There is a variety from beef, pork, fish, and vegetables. The service was nice and the atmosphere was good. So if you visit bring your appetite. Oh don't forget the salad bar, very nice.”
