Today was the Double Hall Ball at the Long Beach Casting club. It was a great event and a great turn out. Since Covid, this was the first event I’ve attended with all my old school fly fishing friends. I could only walk around ten feet before I ran into another friend I have not seen in years.

John Loo shared this pic with me. A Blue Fin Tuna just shy of 400 pounds caught off our local coast.
I did a lot of casting today trying to absorb as much as possible and get critiqued as much as possible.
Oh yeah, for all you gearheads I got to try the new Sage R8 Core saltwater series of rods. The two I casted, lined with the Rio salt flats pro were the 6wt and 8wt. Both rods were smooth as butter on you a Puerto Nuevo style lobster.
Video, this is a clip of the surf fishing seminar Q&A session. Four of us sat in a circle and fielded as many questions we could in a 45 minute window. It went by very fast!

It was just too weird...I didn’t think these things would go for a fly, let alone a 4”streamer. I went one for three on these powerhouse pullers. They were stacked up by the hundreds in a line of foam, dislodged eel grass and debris and they were coming after the fly in packs...There were corvina below and just outside the seemingly endless pipeline of mullet pouring into the bay but we only managed to get the mullet. • • • #mulletonthefly #flyfishing #streamerjunkie #flyfishinglife #flyfishingjunkie #flyfishinggaddict #gopro #adventure #outdoors #inshorefishing #inshore #6wt #clouserminnow #orvisflyfishing #scientificanglers #galvanflyreels #patagonia_flyfish #scoutinflatables #scout430 #scout365 #tugisthedrug #mullet #tugisthedrug #joedirt (at Inshore Hustle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDhtLllD-t0/?igshid=149qbxepnx9f5

Silal
Composition Fe, C 3.0, Si 6, Mn 0.7, P 0.3, S 0.1 (wt% typical) (Silal)
[...]
Technique Reflected light microscopy
Length bar 200 μm / 80 µm
Further information This sample shows the typical structure of silal, irons with high Si content (5.5-7.9 wt%). It is a grey cast iron alloyed with 4-6wt% Si to provide good oxidation resistance. The high Si content forms a dense, adherent iron silicate surface film, which is resistant to oxygen penetration. The flake graphite iron Silal was one of the first heat resisting cast irons developed. Spheroidal graphite Si irons have higher strength and improved ductility. The structure shows cored dendrites of ferrite with interdendritic flake graphite. A few white areas of Si carbide are also present.

The 2 best fish from the weekend's trip, with @ryu_mas123 of www.seakuro.com. 27" on the Sedotti slammer and the 26" on a wee rubber candy. When they get up over about 23-24" they pull much harder, and there were a few few hairy moments with the 26" fish on the 6wt. #flyfishing #flytying #fishing #saltwaterflyfishing #saltfly #swff #seabass #suzuki #stripedbass #stripers #bass #tokyofishing https://www.instagram.com/flickinfeathers/p/CXM0Mf8Bp3F/?utm_medium=tumblr

Orvis Western 8’ 4 wt 2 piece 80’s graphite.
Picking a Corbina rod...
Let’s discuss picking a fly rod for Southern CA sight fishing.
In picking any fly rod to target a particular species there are three main factors to consider. Number one is matching the fly rod to the fish. Number two is matching the fly rod to the fly. Number three is matching the fly rod to the conditions. Ideally you would want all three variables covered by one fly rod. However that’s not always the case. Fortunately the Corbina game lines up exceptionally well when picking one rod to match fish, fly and conditions.
Tumblr media
A Sage 8’ 5 wt 2 piece 80’s graphite.
In regards to matching a fly rod to the fish a good size to start with is a 6wt.
The typical size Corbina is going to run around 20” to 22”. A 6wt gives enough control and stopping power without being over or under gunned. It’s also a pleasant size rod to cast with all day.
Tumblr media
Fly rod vs fly size. The Corbina game does not require we turn over big or wind resistant flies. But the weight of the fly can influence your cast if you’re using rods in the 4 or 5 weight range. I fish a lot with lighter rods and that means I stick to lighter bead chain weighted flies vs the heavier dumbbells. If you choose a 6wt rod you can turn over heavier flies without much issue. That gives you more control when stripping the fly because a heavier fly tracks better in the sand. As far as casting your fly our game is a relatively short one. You want a rod that’s good at making chip shots. A standard cast is in the 30’plus range and you’re trying to be discreet about making that shot. If you find yourself consistently trying to make 60’ plus foot shots at fish you’re doing something wrong. The ideal rod should be able to quickly water haul a single pick up and then lay down a cast with a fair amount of accuracy. That’s why a fast to medium fast action rod works the best. Slower rods make it harder to get that initial lift out of the surf to start a quick backcast especially if you are using a shooting head or full sink line.
Tumblr media
Fly rod vs the conditions. For the most part folks who chase Beans in Southern CA do so in pretty calm conditions especially if you focus on the dawn patrol. . The calmer the conditions the better the visibility overall and the better your chances are at tracking your targets. That said, depending on your local beach the afternoon or evening sessions can be great as well especially since you’re usually in full sun by that time (excluding June gloom). What you will find though later in the day is you’re dealing with a little to a lot more onshore wind. Most 6 weights can handle onshores without much issues. A 4wt with a full floater or intermediate line can have lots of issues in a onshore wind.
Tumblr media
A GLoomis 4wt 10’6” switch rod
Beyond the 6wt.
A 6wt is going to land you right down the center as far as a Corbina stick goes. But there are plenty of folks who stalk Beans away from center. As you deviate, you’ll find you will have to make compromises in either presentation or line control. If you go heavier your setup becomes less stealthy because your line choice will be heavier and that’s more slap hitting the water. If you go lighter or use a slower action rod you compromise your ability to quickly pick up and lay down a cast and control your fly during the strip. In general a lighter setup will give you more stealth but less control and a heavier rig is more line control and less stealth.
Do as I say and not as I do. So now that I have convinced you to head out the door with a 6wt why the heck am I using everything else besides a 6wt? I believe for most of us the reason we are waving a fly rod around is because it’s not about catching fish but how we catch fish. It’s about enjoying the process or being frustrated by it because grabbing a fly rod puts you on a journey. If you’re at the start of your Corbina journey you want to facilitate the process by picking a rod that’s going to get you going in the right direction. I’m at the end of the road. My process is going to be different then yours. At one time it was about trying to catch them on the fly but once again it’s now turned into how I catch them.

Other rods I have used not pictured is TFO Jim Teeney 7wt. Scott Svs 5wt and 8wt, Fenwick vintage glass 7wt. TFO Pro 9wt and probably a rod or two that I’m forgetting.
To wrap this up if you’re new to the hunt start with a fast to medium fast action 6 wt rod. Pretty much any rod made in the last 5 years is fully capable of making a 30’ to 50’ accurate cast no matter what you decide your budget is. You can spend 1500.00 on a set up or you could spend 150.00. It’s a wide open field on gear these days just bring your determination, that will get you more fish then your budget. Now if you don’t want to buy a new rod some of those older rods you have sitting in the closet are going to work great like a RPXL or a streamer rod like a Sage SP. What’s important is you get out on the water and give it a try. Needless to say but I will say it. Wash your rods down after a session.
