I'm gonna delete this post later, but thought I'd put out a general Last Call in case any of my followers/mutuals wanted to join the beta reader group for my WIP series The Skeleton King over in the Wyngspan Labs discord.

WHAT IS SKELETON KING?

Skeleton King is a novel* that I (Ross) have been writing on and off for over 10 years now, which began as a comedy serial I was writing for my college's writing club. This current iteration is the 4th draft.

*As of this draft, Skeleton King is no longer one novel, but a series of 5 short novels/novellas, each of which is stylized as an "Act" of a 5-act Shakespearean tragedy. This 5-act structure was present in the 2020 draft, but I hadn't yet accepted that it should probably be split into separate volumes.

CAN I READ THE PREVIOUS DRAFTS?

I'll probably post snippets from the 2020 draft when they become relevant, or if it would be funny to do so. The others will be buried with me.

WHAT IS A "SUB-ACT"?

Skeleton King riffs on story structure pretty explicitly throughout. Each book in the series is an "Act," but each book also has a traditional Act structure within it; most have 3 acts, one has 2, and one has 5. I'm not sure what to call these colloquially, because "chapter" feels insufficient but "act" is confusing. IMO it's easier to understand within the books themselves, because they're labeled like "Act I-1, Act I-2, Act I-3; Act II-1," etc

SO WHAT'S THIS BOOK ABOUT ANYWAY?

Coming up with a good elevator pitch for this book is literally the hardest part, and I'll be seeking guidance on that. On the surface, it's a coming-of-age road trip dramedy about four very strange high school boys, set in 2010, that gradually becomes a supernatural action-comedy; under the hood, it's an unhinged post-post-ironic Story About Stories that is trying to do way too much at once, but that information overload is, itself, one of the most important themes.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN INFLUENCES?

I think listing some of the books that have left the biggest impact on SK's style/tone will be helpful for giving people a yardstick to judge if it's accomplishing its goals. This list is incomplete, and in no particular order:

• The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams • Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke • House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski • A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket • Moby-Dick by Herman Melville • Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood • Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett • A whole lot of books by Ursula K LeGuin • A whole lot of books by Kurt Vonnegut

If you put all of those books in a blender and then reassembled them into a love/hate letter addressed to the ghosts of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung, you would get Skeleton King.

WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO GET OUT OF THIS?

• Motivation to finally finish the series, because I work best when I have an audience • Knowledge of what's working and what isn't, so please be honest about how you react to things, good or bad • A first pass at sensitivity reading. Due to its setting, race, class, and queerness come up a decent amount in these books; I am trying to be thoughtful in how I address these subjects, but if I overstep, I'd much rather be cautioned/corrected by readers I trust before the wider internet gets their hands on it. • The ego boost of watching a scene/joke land as I intended it to • The all-important unspoken corrective of watching a scene/joke I thought would hit flop instead

I would like to think that Skeleton King is less obnoxious than Homestuck, but both are definitely engaged in a similar kind of metatextual ADHD maximalism.

You will notice that many of these charts are wrong. I am 2 weeks into beating seasonal affective disorder this year.

So far, my strategy has changed from last year in the following ways.

1) apparently I’ve been ADHD this entire time, so now… Adderall.

2) Desk Bike. I had this before but the problem was that I was never awake enough to want to bike. This year, I have solved the problem by getting on the bike and laying my head on the desk when I start if I need to, u til I feel better. I have hung a piece of paper that says “if you feel bad, it is because you have not biked. There is no “I’ll bike when I’m well,” because you must bike to attain well.”

Related, every time my brain says “but I really don’t want to today,” I now understand it is the seasonal affective disorder trying to win, not my brain.

I bike for an hour, and usually perk up around 45 minutes in. (though sometimes the biking is as slow as possible without stopping).

I have been doing well, so far, but I still have my floodlight at sunlight color temperature (9,000 lumen, 6500 k color temp) in case it gets worse. (Something something, light therapy lamps are a scam, their light is simply not bright enough, you gotta go full floodlight to get a real response from it).

In order to cope with the sheer hatred and animosity I feel towards rain, I have upgraded from last year, adding a shoe dryer to my raincoat/umbrella/boots system. I also bought the kids rubber things to go over their shoes to keep them dry, because their complaining drains me (they don’t want to wear boots and change at school).

But two weeks in, and the only time I felt bad was when I made the mistake of thinking “oh, I feel too bad to bike today.” I am learning, I am thriving, and I am NOT going to find myself lying on the floor depressed and unable to accomplish things. No! If I am lying on the floor, it is an immediate sign I should be biking.

Earth angels have been called gods in the past. Today they are known as celebrities and/or superheroes. And the signs that Ryan Gosling is one are all there.

That's how the Lord describes Himself over and over again to King David, Isaiah, Zechariah, etc. in His messages meant for both modern and apocalyptic times. And for good reason.

He is not just the Holy Trinity (Living Tribunal in the MCU). He is also the master and commander of army upon army of angels.

A third of the angels are in heaven...

They are the stars that look down upon Earth. Called "the Watchers," the prophet Enoch has been their leader for about 6500 years. (He used to live at the 'edge of the world' at Yosemite National Park in California. He designed it as a mecca for the angels and himself to enjoy before ascending into heaven.)

That's why Yosemite National Park feels like it is enchanted. It is.

Another third of the angels are fallen. They were assigned the parts of nature that are out of the light: oil, gas, iron, copper, zinc, etc. This is clearly evidenced throughout history. Germany, for example, has the world's largest corporation in all of those industries: BASF.

And BASF gassed Europe in WW1 with chemical weapons. Then it gassed Europe in gas chambers during WW2. Lately? BASF funded Venezuela's downfall into socialism in order to snag all of its resources. Venezuela has a lot of resources: gold, oil, gas, iron and even diamonds. Well it did. Germany owns them now.

But enough about the fallen.

Let's talk about the final third of the angels

But Ryan Gosling is different. He is part of the third of angels that I must take care of as the New Enoch (John the Baptist was the New Elijah. See Matthew 11). Although, honestly? It feels more like Ryan takes care of me, not the other way around. He is one of my 33 Knights after all.

He is truly my guardian angel. (You may know him by his Marvel name: The Punisher.)

I mean, all one has to do is look at our history together across the varioius timeline branches. He helped me launch a career in writing and performing, as told at the end of La La Land, and he saved my life a few times as told in The Gray Man.

Note: I've been trying to finish this post for months and can't. So I'm posting what I have so far. I wish I wasn't bedridden or sick, but fighting eveil has its consequences sometimes.

And Crazy, Stupid, Love is all about one of my love stories with Thor/Chris Hemsworth on another timeline. Emma Watson played my role. I believe she's the daughter of my cousin Amy Adams, so she tends to play me a lot. I know she played me in La La Land, an earth angel story where Ryan actually played himself (although we had the happy ending, not the sad one).

Earth angels often play the lead role in the stories about other earth angels. And if an angel doesn't play their role, it's usually one of their children. Case in point: Brad Pitt is the son of both Chris Hemsworth and Ryan Gosling. As such, Pitt has played both of them in many of their stories. He's played Ryan in Bullet Train and he's played Hemsworth in Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

When Colbor asked if I'd review their W100 COB LED light, I was intrigued but cautious. The market is saturated with new lighting brands, many of questionable quality, so I was trying to figure out what to expect from this relatively unknown company. However, after spending some time with the W100, I found myself pleasantly surprised by what this tiny, budget-friendly light had to offer.

First Impressions: Compact Powerhouse

The Colbor W100 is small—about the size of an oversized disposable camera—and feels incredibly lightweight in hand. Despite its compactness, it packs a punch that belies its size. Initially, I was skeptical about the build quality since the entire body is made of plastic. At a $170 price point, I wondered if it could really deliver the performance I needed.

Performance: Brightness and Color Accuracy

To test the W100, I immediately focused on the most critical aspects: light output and spectral quality. Upon flipping the switch in a controlled environment, I was nearly blinded by how bright this little fixture was. For something so small, the brightness is impressive, and the size of the COB (chip-on-board) LED is quite generous compared to the body, reminding me of a computer chip.

The light quality is spectacular, with similar consistency across the entire color temperature range of 2700K to 6500 K. This light hits high marks in all the right places, and I couldn't be more impressed.

Output Comparison: A Contender Among Giants

Curious about how the W100 would compare to other budget-friendly lights, I compared it with the Godox SL60-W, a model I've used. The results were telling. The W100 matched the Godox in terms of brightness and surpassed it in color accuracy. The only downside is that the W100 uses a proprietary mount, which limits accessory compatibility, but its performance more than compensates for this.

Design and Usability: Features and Flaws

The W100 is simple to use, featuring just two knobs—one for brightness and one for color temperature—that adjust in 1% and 100K increments, respectively. I particularly appreciated the thoughtful design where tapping the knobs cycles through preset values with a smooth fade rather than a jarring jump. It's a small detail, but one that adds a touch of professionalism to the light.

Final Verdict: A Small Light with Big Potential

Despite its few shortcomings, the Colbor W100 is an impressive little light, especially considering its price point. It's incredibly versatile, offering bi-color capabilities, battery power options, and enough output to rival much larger lights. Whether you're shooting in a tight space, need a portable light for travel, or are looking for an affordable entry point into bi-color LEDs, the W100 is worth considering.

Would I recommend the Colbor W100? Absolutely—especially for those in need of a powerful, portable, and budget-friendly lighting solution.
