5 books and 5 fics
@waxwing-saint made me do it
I always have a hard time making lists, especially lists of favorites because there are far too many to remember, and I had to set a rule for myself to narrow it down. Pick things that stayed with me. That’s it. So, these are the ones that made me think or feel or put me in a weeklong introspective funk.
Books
Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield. My most recently finished read. Both @sosh022 and @waxwing-saint recommended this to me and it’s been years since any book has hit me as hard as this one did. The love, the frustration, the inevitability, every page felt so real. Some days I managed a whopping 30 pages but most days it was 2-8. The words were just too good to let them fly by without holding onto them for a little while.
Just Kids by Patti Smith. I’ve been a fan of her music since I was a kid so when I picked up this memoir I was only familiar with that and her poetry. It’s a story of her youth and friendship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe, and her writing is so compelling that her reminiscences filled my head and heart as only a poet could. Highly recommend even if you don’t know her music.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I bought this the year it was published and I would read it at least once a year for years afterwards. When the movie came out, I couldn’t see it, and I still haven’t seen it, even though I think this year might finally be when I do. The story is just too close to me.
There There by Tommy Orange. Stories about clashing identities, of being a part of two worlds and also neither, are always very interesting to me. And this one was just so visceral in its anger and sadness, it swallowed me up.
Nightshift by Kiare Ladner. Ok I’m cheating a bit here since I haven’t finished it yet, and I don’t normally recommend books I haven’t finished, but this book makes me squirm and I need others to squirm with me. Have you ever met someone and became instantly obsessed with being their friend (and maybe more) and when you did, you got caught up with that feeling that you’re finally being true to yourself but maybe also molding yourself into someone you’re not? That’s this book. And it’s a drama so the discomfort and stakes feel higher. I have no idea how it’s going to end, but I’m probably going to do more squirming and cringing in self-recognition along the way.
Fics
i’ll take the desert, you take the coast by @searidings. Supercorp. I absolutely adore this fic, I love all of searidings’ fics, but this one blew me away when it was first posted and it still does. I love a Lena that holds a post-reveal grudge. I love that she holds onto it for so long. It’s beautiful and sad and angry and I reread it every few months.
Vertigo by Yoshiyuki_Ly. Fleurmione. This fic inspires strong feelings in people, and given the ending, I can understand why. Fleur is a Slytherin and she’s got major childhood trauma and her characterization is colder and harder than we’ve ever seen her. But the hesitant romance that builds with Hermione is so sweet and real, it’s one of my favorites. There’s also a sequel on ffn if you’re interested.
Falling Towards Something (It Might Just Be You) by @thewaywedo33. Fleurmione. Another take on a darker/grey Fleur. A bit angsty, character driven, and you’ll have so many questions about what’s going on in the wider world, but all that really matters is that this Fleur can’t stay away from Hermione even though they’re not really on the same side, and I love their gradual acceptance of it, until it all comes to a head and choices have to be made.
Personal Jesus by @perfectly--random. Fleurmione. A non-magical AU that hits you in the gut and I won’t say anymore because it’s just that good. Wonderful angst.
The Arctic Station by @foragewrites. Supercorp. One of my favorite Supercorp premises is post-reveal angst and eventual reconciliation, and this fic does it so well, all couched in a stranded/survival story. It’s amazing.

Because I limited myself to completed fics, I left out some really great ones. Danse Avec la Vie (fleurmione) by Sosh_022/@sosh022, Once In A Lifetime (Sansaery) by MsCFH/ @hell-much and We court our own Captivity / than Thrones more great and innocent; (Sansaery) by heart_nouveau. Danse and Once In A Lifetime are in progress so my list will probably change when they finish.

2022 Book List

The time has come! My favourite time of the year to reflect on a year of reading! Please enjoy the photo above as the cozy refuge that is Daunts Books in London shot on film.
A few thoughts on this year of reading. In summation, I fell quite short in my expectations of the quantity of what I wanted to read this year. Whether that be a challenging start to the year, or a very busy work season, I consumed less this year than I hope to. With all of that being said, I am quite a fan of most of the things I read this year. Please enjoy my highlights!
1: My Body by Emily Ratajkowski: An incredibly personal set of essays that explored her relationship with her body that was honest, flawed, and fascinating.
2: Where the Deer and the Antelope Play: The Pastoral Observations of One Ignorant American Who Loves to Walk Outside by Nick Offerman: While long and full of words I had to look up, I thoroughly enjoyed the thoughts Nick Offerman shared about society and our relationship to the land we live on.
3: The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan: A really engaging fantasy read by one of my favourite audiobook narrators. Loved the character development and the unique magical elements.
4: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty: This one of the first books I read from Reese's bookclub and I have to say, she has never disappointed me yet! A great complicated mystery with a fascinating set of female friendships.
5: Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jensen Reid: I read three books but this talented author this year! She has a knack for writing glamourous books about beautiful and haunted young women that I just find so easy to get lost in.
6: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Another TJR read that was worth the hype. I loved the unexpected story line in this.
7: The Midnight Library by Matt Haig: I very much enjoyed this unique concept for a book. This book successfully subverts expectations and you can't help but viewing life a little differently after experiencing this novel.
8: Dreams of Joy by Lisa See: An absolutely heartbreaking novel full of nuance and interesting history. I adored the layered relationships sprinkled throughout.
9: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah: By far one of the best books I read this year. I'm not normally one for WW2 stories, but this story was gripping in every way. Strong women will always be my favourite to read about.
10: The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: A reread that I will never tire of. There's something so fascinating about the dynamic between Watson and Holmes that I will never not want to contemplate.
11: Night Shift by Kiare Ladner: This was one of those books that was uncomfortable to read due to unlikable characters. The people in this story were unlikeable, complicated, and illogical which pushed me out of my normal story comfort zone.
12: The Last Garden in England by Julia Kelly: Just a delightful easy read about 3 generations of women navigating the world in unconventional ways.
13: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas: Having seen all the hype on Tik Tok over these novels, I took the plunge and have read the first three novels in this series. They have fast been devoured in my love for this world Sarah created. Perhaps why this series resonates well with me, is that it is fantasy actually written for women by women. There's so much to love in the depiction of romantic relationships actually being equal, women being just as fierce fighters as men, and the subversion of stereotypes. This was one of my reading highlights of the year!

Sandcastles
The day was super hot and J said “let’s go to the beach” I love how impulsive he is. So we packed up and headed out, he took me to Ladner and talked about his past with me. I love how open he is about his life, good and the bad. When we reached the beach of course Roxy was asleep so we drove around some more and talked, he showed me his old high schools and talked about his life, a few experiences he’s had. He seems to open up to me pretty easily. I really like that he trusts me enough to share things with me. When Roxy woke up we returned to the beach and took her out, there was a small scare as J informed me we had to avoid a tent of about 5-6 guys. So we walked past and picked a nice spot. I took out the beach toys and started showing Roxy how to build sandcastles as J was digging a big hole (low-key hoping Roxy was going to fall in.) J went down to the water to fill up some sand toys, so the castle would stay stable. Roxy dumped out the water several times but every time he went back, and he even brought Roxy with him. I stayed on the beach, but they looked really cute together. Roxy soon grew comfortable with another little child on the beach and their toys, J and I followed her apologizing to all the people my little duck was interrupting but nobody seemed bothered in fact everyone was telling us how cute she was. After we had packed up from the beach we drove to the McDonald's and had a very messy, greasy meal which was really great. It was a very family vibe. After putting Roxy to bed we cuddled, had sex, talked but like the most important thing I can take away from it is that I very much love J and want to marry him.

This week started with some interesting filming news (1 November) and pictures from Ladner. A library has been turned into the Mud Lick police station for filming, exterior scenes were scheduled to involve vehicles and exposed prop weapons and Mulder and Scully were spotted driving through the area and were heard bickering outside this ridiculously named police station. (X) 
We got a couple of pictures of them filming, and Gillian surely looks like someone who is having fun! 😊 (X)
Night filming continued in Ladner Harbour Park, where Mulder and Scully were driving a car down the road across from the Marina (X)
Next up some rumours, speculations about Chanelle Peloso playing a character named Emily Van De Kamp. Later on, more information about the whole Van de Kamp family, appearing - according to IMDB’s page - in Episode 5. (X)

And in this week what made us believe even more - other than the bickering story😍 - is Mitch Pileggi and his conversation with David: “This is vintage Mulder and Scully. This is classic. A trip to Victoria...
On July 24th, 2020 we went to Victoria, BC! Here is my debriefing of the trip:
I woke up. My brother was still asleep (and would be like that for 10 minutes), but my sister, my mom and dad were awake. I started to prepare.
We left the house. Here is a list of the supplies I brought:
A towel.
Extra pants.
A bunch of banana bread.
And lunch (which I didn’t really eat until we got back home)
We arrived at a Canada Line train station. We rode it from King Edward to Bridgeport station, which is right next to the River Rock Casino.
We then rode the #620 bus to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. We also passed by Ladner Exchange. Ladner is a small, suburban town, and it specializes in agriculture.
Finally, we arrived at a sign saying:

This probably meant we were nearing the BC Ferries Tsawwassen terminal. I guess honeybee smuggling is a thing.
Finally, we arrived at the ferry terminal. It had 6 berths (ferry parking and boarding areas). We had to go to berth 5, and boarded the Queen of New Westminster.
On the ferry, we had to wait who knows how long, and by the time the ferry left the berth, the hot chocolate I got on the ferry was gone.
There are a lot of interesting things about the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal to Swartz Bay route.
First of all- we pass through U.S waters!

However, the ferries that pass there have permission to be there. So long as our destination is not in the U.S, we can take a shortcut through.
Also anyway, lots of Washington State ferries go through BC’s borders.
Second- we pass through Active Pass, which is a really dangerous area. Lots of boats like to pass through, and this reached a deadly toll in 1970, when the Russian freighter “Sergey Yesenin” (named after a Russian poet of the 1920s) was in Active Pass without permission. It collided with the Queen of Victoria, splitting the Queen of Victoria in half.
Also, the BC ferry Queen of Alberni ran aground in 1979, and tipped over, causing damage to vehicles and the ship itself. A racehorse was lost as well.
Finally, after 1h 30 minutes, we arrived at Swartz Bay. There was a bus, which we took all the way to Victoria.
By then I was really sleepy on the bus, but it shook a lot, so when ever I wanted to put my head down, I ended up bonking it on the window!
Finally, we arrived at Victoria. First, we went to the Legislative Building of Victoria. We ate our lunch there (except for me, I ate only a little of it).
Next, we went to Fan Tan alley. While my sister went into a shop, there were a bunch of manikins that I saw in a window.
We saw some people with bubble tea, so we asked where they got it, and they directed us to a bubble tea shop with the picture of Mao Zedong on it.
My sister said that it wasn’t actual bubble tea, just juice.
We didn’t buy any bubble tea.
We went ahead and bought some snacks at a grocery store. After all, we were hungry.
We took the 4 UViC to UViC, and my brother really wanted to see the bunnies there. We didn’t see any bunnies though.
Finally, we went home. We took the Swartz Bay via Saanich, and it was long. My mother wanted to take the Sooke, but we would have been late for the ferry if we did. So we took the Swartz Bay via Saanich, and I fell asleep on board.
I woke up about 30 minutes before we reached Swartz Bay. We were on a highway, and went through the town of Sidney, and we also passed a ferry terminal with routes to the U.S.
Now, my favorite thing to do while on a land vehicle that takes a long time to reach a destination is to see all the landmarks, whether it be a highway sign or a building.
Finally, we arrived at the ferry terminal. After waiting a while, the ferry arrived, and we got on.
We got White Spot on the ferry, and I could barely finish it.
Finally, we arrived at Tsawwassen ferry terminal. We took the 620 back to Bridgeport. We took the Canada Line to Waterfront, and then we took the King George/Production way back home.

Little did Aaron understand that, as his family toasted each other with Champagne and posted deride victory photographs on Facebook pretending that they had won a big lotto prize, he had really won – and had a million-pound ticket in his pocket.

2. Twice is just as nice
Derek Ladner, a Lotto big stake victor from Cornwall in England, UK, constantly played similar numbers. 
One day he couldn't exactly recollect if he'd already purchased a ticket or not, so he flew out to play just incase he had forget to play his numbers.
It turned out THAT HE HAD PLAYED so his new ticket meant he now had 2 similar tickets and .... his number scame up.
He had therefore won twice or the amount of £958,284 ($1,252,764).
3. Rose home
Not long after Susan Crossland's dad passed on she found a white rose, which she took as a sign that he was viewing over her from above - her dad loved white roses and kept a white rose garden. 
After two years she found another, and this time she thought it was a flag that she should play her father's usual lottery numbers.
She did – and inside seven days she'd won a Lotto big stake of £1,218,618 ($1592837).

4. A cheerful homecoming
Everyone of us will do certain things before we leave the house or go on holiday - how many times do you check the appliances are switched off or the door is locked?
Well before he went on vacation Martyn White's checklist included checking his phone messages. 
When he saw an email disclosing to him that he had won £10 million, he expected it was a fabrication and overlooked it. How many times have you had $10,000,000 sitting in a Nigerian bank account just waiting you to claim it?

6. Who needs a crystal ball?!
Rachel Bryan's horoscope for the day anticipated a major win. 
She didn't consider much of it, until the point when another completely different horoscope anticipated a similar thing. 
That was all the signs this British lottery player required. She immediately went to a local retailer to purchase a ticket and she absolutely expressed gratitude toward her fortunate stars when she won a groundbreaking £2,593,004 ($3,389,471) Lotto bonanza.

7. Just under the wire
Next time you're having a cleaning spree be watchful about what you're discarding. 
EuroMillions champ James Wilson thought he would discard some old tickets in his wallet, but just before throwing them in the garbage decided to check them.
It worked out that one of them was a EuroMillions ticket worth £51,232.90. 
What’s more his ticket was a half year old and there was just a single day left for him to claim his winnings – after 24 hours the prize would have gone towards supporting National Lottery ventures.
He just made it.

8. Written in the stars
Carly Wiggett and Becky Witt owe a considerable measure to Carly's mum who took the inconvenience of reviewing their horoscopes in a national daily paper one day. 
Their horoscopes anticipated a Pisces and a Taurus would win the lottery on the off chance that they collaborated together, so  together they purchased a EuroMillions ticket for a laugh and landed themselves £168,813.80 ($220,665) tax-free each.

Justice Ian Nordheimer
Judge, Ontario Supreme Court, Toronto, Ont.  Nordheimer's name is becoming synonymous with class action suits largely because of his ruling, which overturned Justice Edward Belobaba's decision in a high-profile situation on carriage in the Barrick Gold class action suit.  Nordheimer given the losing coalition of law firms leave to appeal Belobaba's decision in the Divisional Court.  He is likely the most influential Superior Court level judge in the country using a decade on the seat and produces perhaps the best number of thorough judgments each year in comparison to some trial level estimate.  He's famous for his quick wit and sharp conclusions.  In the past year, Nordheimer has made quite a splash in the legal community by upholding a professional discipline penalty for current LSUC bencher Joe Groia and releasing data which revealed Rob Ford was the subject of a police investigation.What that the panel had to say: He is the sort of judge that should be on the Court of Appeal... or greater.  A judge of complete integrity.
Fred Headon
Assistant general counsel, labour and employment law, Air Canada, Montreal, Que.  As chairman of the Canadian Bar Association's Futures Initiative, Headon has given more than 25 presentations to attorneys, law students, professors, librarians, law firm personnel, and labs from Toronto to Buenos Aires, Victoria to Halifax, in person and online.  The Futures report was released in August 2014 and its own recommendations put Headon squarely in the midst of several important discussions on subjects essential to the profession.  He continues to lead the Futures steering committee as it now turns its guidelines into actions.  Headon is an integral part of the discussion on the future of this profession and he had been the first in-house counselor to become the president of the CBA. What Republicans needed to say: Brings energy and decency and the smarts to what he does.
Pascal Paradis
Executive director, Lawyers Without Borders Canada, Quebec City, Que.  Also back for his second time on the Best 25, Paradis is an unstoppable force and also a fervent advocate for human rights, especially for women and children.  Thanks to Paradis' initiative, the Quebec bar joined LWBC to act as global counsel in favour of Raif Badawi, the Saudi blogger condemned to prison and flogging for his remarks criticizing the regime.  Since January 2015, Paradis and LWBC are leading a consortium of Canadian organizations working to get a wide-range five-year project to foster justice.  They plan to execute means of balancing and prevention for women victims of sexual violence and other persons affected by the Malian armed battle.  He also discusses several international conferences on human rights problems. What Republicans needed to say: He has left an extremely profitable position in a big national law firm to go LWBC for quite a small paycheque because he followed his heart and his enthusiasm.
Sheila Block
Partner, Torys LLP, Toronto, Ont. Among the sharpest litigators in the country, Block has served as lead counsel on a newly dismissed $5-billion class action lawsuit against CIBC plus a $100-million lawsuit brought by approximately 8,000 residents of Barbados from Manulife.   She was also staunch counsel for former Manitoba associate chief justice Lori Douglas from the question of the judge's role in a scandal involving her husband, one of his former customers, and salacious photographs of herself posted online.  Block additionally received an honorary LLD from the Law Society of Upper Canada this year.  An urge dedicated to teaching law in Canada and around the globe, she has trained advocates for the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal in Rwanda and the Special Court on Sierra Leone. Rocco Galati Law Firm PC, Toronto, Ont.  Rocco Galati is famous because of its one-man resistance to the present government, so far spending $42,000 of his own money on court problems.  He launched a situation that blocked Stephen Harper's appointment of Justice Marc Nadon into the Supreme Court of Canada.  His opposition to the appointment of Federal Court of Appeal Justice Robert Mainville into the Quebec Court of Appeal Wasn't as successful.  While he doesn't win, Galati is dogged in his efforts to defend the Constitution against a government he sees pushing the boundaries with too little respect for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  He's now also been elected because bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada and it will be interesting to see what he brings to the law of the profession.What voters needed to say: An authentic Canadian constitutional and human rights enthusiast.

The statistics for the month of August are in and the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board reports a list to sell ratio of 17% for August.
What this means is that we are in balanced market conditions. It means we have an equal amount of buyers and sellers in the market place. If the market continues like this for a prolonged period of time, what we will see is the market levelling off as opposed to the declining prices we have seen in the last 12 to 18 months.
The benchmark price for all properties in the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board was $993,000 for August. That is down about 8% over the last year. Prices are still declining, but it is not as dramatic as it was. They went down a little bit over the last couple of months, but as I said previously, if the balanced conditions continue, we will likely see a levelling off in prices.
There were 2231 sales in August. That is up 16% from the August 2018 numbers and it is still 9% below the 10-year average. Don’t forget that the 10-year average includes the period between 2013-2016, was astronomical period of increase,so that would skew that figure as well. Another interesting fact is that this is the 4th consecutive month that there were over 2,000 sales. The 6 months previous to that, from November 2018 to April 2019, we did not hit 2,000 sales once. March and April are typically the busiest months of the year, but this year, May to August has been our busiest months, which is really unusual.
All of these statistics do support the possibility that through the fall we may see things levelling off. I am sure by the beginning of next year some things will have happened to affect our markets in different ways.
The global economies seem to have slowed down, but it does not seem to have affected Canada yet.
There are currently 44,000 new homes under construction, which is a pretty significant figure. These homes are not so much being built in Vancouver where we are down to around 5,000 new housing starts. What will happen if new construction doesn’t show an upturn is that the trades will see a slow down in the area over probably the next 6-12 months.
The last thing that I want to talk about is the same drama I have been banging around for the last few years around here. When you listen to the media, they talk about how slow the markets are. In general, yes the markets are slow and the numbers are reflective of that in the last few months. But again, what I will tell you is that the low sides of the market are really busy. It seems to be the higher sides that are slow, and every market has a cut-off point.
42% of all the Downtown condos below 1.25 million sold last month. That means if you are selling a property under 1.25 million in downtown Vancouver, you are in an extreme seller’s market. Nobody reports that and you do not see it anywhere.
When you get above 1.25 million, there are 331 properties for sale, and only 20 sold. That means that only 6% above 1.25 million sold, and that is an extreme buyers market. Same geographic area, but completely different markets in the 2 price ranges.
24% of detached houses under 3 million on the Westside sold. There are only 150 of them for sale, but 36 of them sold last month. The Westside, which is supposed to be the most expensive Real Estate in Canada, and it is an extreme buyers’ market under 3 million. When you get above 3 million, the market is non-existent at 5%.
Westside condos and townhouses, up to 1.75 million, is a seller’s market. Eastside detached up to 1.5 million, seller’s market. The entire Eastside condo and townhouse market is a seller’s market. Richmond below 1.25 million is a seller’s market. Ladner detached below 1.25 million seller’s market.
These are some of the things that they do not talk about in the media, and for the life of me, I do not understand why.

• Practice English and Learn Skills for the Canadian Workplace: Wednesdays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Meet at the library to practice English, learn workplace vocabulary, become familiar with the Canadian labour market and develop networking skills. Each session includes tips and assistance with resumé writing, job search skills, websites and Canadian workplace expectations. Taught by a TESOL-certified and experienced teacher, this program is being offered in partnership with Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society. Parent Time provides parents and caregivers an opportunity to meet other parents, learn new parenting skills, share information and resources. Suitable for parents of babies 23 months and younger.
•Wind Down to Bedtime Storytime: Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Tuck into a story! Children and caregivers will be entertained with stories, songs, rhymes and more. Kids are encouraged to wear their pyjamas and bring their favourite stuffie. Wind Down to Bedtime Storytime prepares children to learn to read and includes some relaxation techniques.
• Mental Health Resiliency Support Group: Second and fourth Thursday of each month, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; South Delta; Canadian Mental Health Association Vancouver-Fraser offers a mental health resiliency support group in South Delta for individuals living with a mental health concern or experiencing symptoms. Then consider applying to the Delta Hospice Society’s introductory hospice volunteer training program. Volunteers companion/support individuals and families at home and the hospice, work at the Centre for Supportive Care’s reception and lending library, participate in support groups, offer complementary therapies and provide vigils so people don’t die alone.
