The SR-71 Was Close to Perfect
A member of the Blackbirds’ ground crew looks back on the airplane’s flight-test beginnings to the end of the Blackbirds
This first photograph was taken of the SR-71 #972 when it was in a hangar near Dullas airport, waiting for the new Smithsonian Air and Space Museum to be open. Photo Eric long. The other two photographs were taken at Palmdale California December 21, 1989.
After a 480-mile flight from Beale Air Force Base in California, the midnight-black airplane swooped down to about 300 feet above Burbank Tower, less than 30 seconds after its scheduled arrival time of 12 noon. It made an easy half-roll, then completed two more passes. The parking garage roof where I stood reverberated with cheers, but as the Blackbird came in for its final pass, a hundred feet off the runway, and then pulled up just beyond the tower, the crowd fell silent. was December 1989, and this flyby, a gift to Lockheed employees from Ben Rich, head of Advanced Development Projects (the Skunk Works), marked the beginning of the end of the SR-71. After much debate in Congress, the Blackbirds were about to be retired. The YF-12A, the earlier, single-seat version of the SR-71, first flew in August 1963 and the Blackbird in December 1964. It was still unsurpassed when it was retired in 1990, 24 years after it officially entered service.
As I watched the SR-71 that December day, I thought back to the airplane’s flight-test beginnings in the early 1960s. I thought of Ben Rich, Ray Passon, Keith Beswick, and so many others whose lives were forever touched by this aircraft. I too was part of the Blackbird team, setting up housing, transportation, and communications—special measures due to the secrecy necessary. And above all of us was designer Kelly Johnson, who had a gift for sharing his ability to innovate and his drive to succeed. The unity of commitment we felt under leadership from Larry Bohanan in engineering and Dorsey Kammerer in production reached new intensity whenever Kelly arrived in the field. Sometimes he would good-naturedly arm-wrestle with people working there. His team members were hand-picked and fiercely loyal to him. He once offered $50 to anybody who could find an easy job to do. He got no takers. When it came to their specialties, the people working on the Blackbird were the best in the company, perhaps in the country or even the world. The last word in reconnaissance airplanes, the SR-71 was capable of flying faster than Mach 3 and above 85,000 feet. In fact, the SR-71 flew so fast that even in the cold of those rarefied heights, the friction of the air heated its titanium skin to 550 degrees Fahrenheit.
On the day the Blackbird took to the air for the first time, many of the ground crews showed up. I had worked all night, but sleep in those days seemed like nothing but a waste of time so I stayed to watch. The weather was perfect for a December day: clear and cold, with snow on the surrounding mountains. Somewhere around 8 a.m. the desert silence was shattered by the sound of the twin Buick V-8 engines used for the starters. Later, when the Blackbirds operated at their base at Beale, they had permanent start facilities in their hangars, but in the early days two highly modified 425-cubic-inch Buick Wildcats, an estimated 500 horsepower each, were used to turn a massive starter shaft that was inverted into the first one, then the other of the SR-71’s J-58 engines. One sound I shall never forgot is that of those unmuffled Buicks holding steady at better than 6,000 rpm in excess of 15 seconds at a time, all hours of the day and night. Starting the engines was no easy job.
Kelly Johnson stood by in his familiar dark blue suit and tie, smiling as he had a final word for the pilots.
Veteran crew chief standing next to me could only murmur, “Her enemies will never be natural.”( that was true. It was jealous people that were her enemy.)

Chrysler 300H
The 1970 Chrysler 300 Hurst is a limited-edition unicorn that offers performance, luxury, size, and exclusivity. With a length of over 18 feet, it earns a place in history as one of the longest luxury performance coupes of all time. Chrysler 300 Hurst’s origin is shrouded in mystery. The car was assembled at Chrysler’s Jefferson Avenue plant in Detroit, Mich. It was shipped 600 miles east to Warminster, Penn. for completion.Hurst bolted on a distinctive satin tan fiberglass-skinned hood with 300H emblems and a fiberglass trunk lid with an integrated spoiler. There’s no mistaking a 300H on the street because the car was only available in Spinnaker White, with orange and brown tape stripes embellishing the flanks. Oddly, the cars were not equipped with Hurst shifters.Safe to say, there’s nothing like the 300 Hurst’s magnificent interior in the muscle car world. The designers swiped the gorgeous overstuffed tan leather seating from the Imperial. It’s as if someone stuffed a living room sofa into a Charger.
Every 300 Hurst edition left the factory with Mopar’s well-proven 440 cubic-inch V-8 and a heavy-duty TorqueFlite 727 three-speed automatic transmission. The air-cleaner housing proudly carried a TNT designation.
With a four-barrel carburetor, the TNT 440 engine had a 375-horsepower rating with 480 pound-feet of torque. The 300H’s V-8 wedge is identical to Plymouth’s Super Commando 440 and Dodge’s 440 Magnum. Slap on a decal and boom: It’s a TNT.
With the standard 3.23 gears out back, the 300 Hurst delivered 0-60 MPH times in 7.1 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.3 seconds. Its speed with more aggressive gearing and stickier tires is anyone’s guess.

Also we have a new design no it's similar that he said if you take a Dodge neon and it has 200 horsepower in the car goes 220 mph or 230 mph and you make it until Lamborghini or something like that Ferrari or one of the models there's already a kit car a modified coyote or a modified day Tomaso hit you make it out of cheaper fiberglass cuz it goes 2:30 not 380.
Hera Zues
Now there's some other things our son said he said if you want us to make stuff you have to have a base like you have a snake certain things and start out and it grows and grows and eventually it will become a staple from out there and stuff you need certain items hospital equipment is a big one you guys are terrible at making that sports cars you don't hardly make any on and this is a great idea. So what you're saying is the fiberglass carbon reinforce panel would be just that no plastic and it'll be inexpensive the molds would take longer to make so he says so you add the plastic and that's why it's cheaper some people think plastic and it makes it cheap flammable and it is a little bit more so you can think of it that way but the plastic does make it so you can go faster I'm not a ton faster but fast enough to be safe if you go over 230
We're getting ready for this morning and they came up with this idea and they wanted to mention it it's a great idea is to make the panel like really less expensive there's a few ways to do it one way is to make it very simple the one of the simple forms that they have and it's only a few pieces is the one that you see it's a Lamborghini is from duraflex or something like that he calls a duraflex and we should probably use that name cuz people think it's the other company and it's a great name and you just started using it I thought it was that yeah they don't call it that and it flexes a little and it's durable yeah they don't name that the company's name different and 5 minutes is what you do with the glass plastic makes a little more flammable but it meets the flame spread and you can pop out tons of them tons and we're making it then we can pop out more and make the flame resistant better but really you can use machines. It's a wonderful idea it will save a lot of money and a lot of time these cars go fast when you're making it cheaper it's the materials and stuff and you don't buy the best the process you should use plastic it takes less time to cost less as a matter of fact that would make it possible
Thor Freya
The guy in the show has done it before and he knows is fast he just can't seem to get it going it's true other people are trying and they can't get it going
..
I'm going to try and do it I see what you're saying the plastic you just and you can make it fire resistant you can put it in and pop it out I got one to three minutes it's about the same fire resistance as fiberglass it's more solid you can go faster and my process it's pretty cheap I don't think I can make it cheaper you know like 500 and I'm not trying to make it solid and it works so he's right but this stuff is cheap you go 3 minutes of mold you have a huge factory and you can make tons and tons of these things tons and just ship them I mean you have the frame separated in it glues on and it you got to understand this is very quick thing and he's saying the kids need to be cheap to start in the plastic makes it cheap and we want to recycle plastic. I could recycle materials and make the whole thing out of it and save more money and say made out of 100% recycled materials and reach 480 instead of 500 so I'm going to try and do it. This stuff is strong it weighs the right weight are these Dodge neon ideas are great it'll go 250 mph and I have a design it's my own car it says it's better not worse. So I'm going to go ahead with it now

2024 Ford Mustang GT: A Modern Classic
The Ford Mustang has been a staple of American muscle cars for decades. The 2024 Ford Mustang GT stays true to its roots with a powerful V8 engine that delivers 450 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. If you're after a muscle car that offers both performance and iconic style, the Mustang GT is hard to beat.
It features a starting price of around $44,000, making it a more affordable option in the muscle car market. Additionally, companies that ship cars can transport this beauty across states if you're buying from a different location, ensuring you get your dream car without any hassle.
2024 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat: A Beast on the Road
For those who want raw power and don’t mind a larger car, the 2024 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is a top pick. With its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engine, the Hellcat cranks out an insane 717 horsepower and 656 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. If speed and power are your top priorities, this might be the best muscle car to buy for you.
The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat starts at $65,000, but with all the high-performance features and aggressive styling, it’s worth every penny. It's a good choice if you love old-school muscle car vibes with modern touches.
2025 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1: Fast and Fierce
The 2025 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is another excellent muscle car option for 2024 and 2025. It boasts a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine, offering an incredible 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. With a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, this car can hold its own against any competition.

2025 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye: The Four-Door Monster
If you're in need of a bit more practicality but still want to own a muscle car, the 2025 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye is a great choice. This four-door muscle car is powered by a 797-horsepower supercharged V8 engine, providing family-friendly transportation without sacrificing any muscle.
With a top speed of 203 mph, the Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye proves you can have it all—performance, space, and style. It starts at around $90,000. While it’s one of the pricier options, it’s hard to find another vehicle that offers such a unique mix of speed and utility.
If you’re buying out of state, rest assured that companies that ship cars can get your Hellcat Redeye to your doorstep.
2024 Ford Mustang Mach 1: Track-Ready Muscle
For those looking for something more track-oriented, the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is a perfect blend of performance and handling. Its 480-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine offers ample power, and it comes with a variety of upgrades that improve its track capabilities.
Starting at $57,000, the Mach 1 is a bit more expensive than the standard Mustang GT, but it’s worth the extra investment if you’re looking for a muscle car with enhanced performance features. It also includes aerodynamic tweaks and performance suspension, making it track-ready straight from the factory.
2025 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack: Budget-Friendly Power
If you’re looking for muscle on a budget, the 2025 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack delivers excellent value for its price. With a starting price of around $48,000, you get a naturally aspirated 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that pumps out 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque.
It’s not the fastest muscle car on the market, but it offers plenty of power at a more affordable price point. The R/T Scat Pack gives you the chance to enjoy that classic muscle car feel without breaking the bank.
2024 Chevrolet Camaro SS: Affordable Performance
Another great option for those looking for a balance of price and power is the 2024 Chevrolet Camaro SS. With a 6.2-liter V8 engine that offers 455 horsepower, the Camaro SS can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4 seconds.
The Camaro SS starts at a reasonable $43,000, making it one of the most affordable high-performance muscle cars. For buyers looking to get into the muscle car scene without spending too much, this is an excellent option.
Choosing the Best Muscle Car for You

And he wants to do this car in a kit and it's just like the Ford GT40 this is the Corvette this is like a c3 or something but the c7 or c8 is the same front end and that's what matters everybody wants a Corvette then again everybody wants to Ford GT 40 and no one can afford the Ford and we're not making that many Corvettes cuz we're stupid and really these things are fast and his stats will be different but the Chevy can go with a Chevy and the Ford can go with the Ford well that's not how they do it but this is intense what an idea and I would do a cut and I agree with it and we can start right away right now and nobody even knows where the hell they are or if they exist anymore and that's crap he used to see a few now he sees one once a month I mean it's dog due everyone's driving s***** cars and he says it's going to get worse and he can make it to sell the state which is what he wants to do solid state practically all of it to be used for a fly car the hole would work this ain't up to 3,000 which is not right but you can take it off and make the molds easier but really I understand what he's saying most of it would be like emitter proof because they change the electronics how to solid state and they don't have his reburner s*** and also the crap the exhaust is very simple and it's easy to fix the engines are a pain in the ass Tuesdays but boy would this be great so they're going to say what the stats are and we're going to have a meeting and we can he said we don't have a problem selling to our people that's that's not an issue if that's the stipulation and I don't think it's real smart to do it that way and we want to go inspire people doing it that's how you identify them and not too many at first but really we have trillions of people sitting in their stupid houses that are confident this will get them out there competent the confident too
Mac daddy
Okay we're talking about the Chevy Malibu again the base horsepower is about 220 ft pounds to 35 and the stats:
--0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds and it's slightly slower because it would be a little bit heavier because of the chassis
--quarter mile 6.8 seconds a teensy bit faster because of torque and horsepower combination
--top speed is faster and it is because of the motor it is instead of 420 of the Ford GT40 kit 480 if you did the cradle in the LS1 it is a mid-engine car at that point and the Malibu is in four wheel independent it would be 780 a little bit slower 10 mph both of these cars are extremely fast when you do it with a kit the reason is the weight is less they wait these things down with these have full cages and enclosures the GT has one no it's only a partial and it's lame and too dangerous and the Corvette has a partial to anastasis and most supercars like this this would solve the problem
Thor Freya
And I was thinking too this would solve the problem and it would be safe and you'd have safety equipment on top of it right now people are getting killed in these things are cheap and nobody wants to get one and this would change the world and I would be heading Ben would have to follow and he's saying that's fine and he can beat me because of the statistics and my grand nephew says it's because it looks a little hotter it's true too but that's his ladies car so Ben's going to get there she kicked out of me women and never notice it even though it's going to be a quadriplegic I'm going to try and do this I know what to say it's like a deal and we go ahead and start doing it and starts working somehow the Vader company is in North Carolina and we are there but the others are there too and they haven't closed their doors. We want to go ahead with this concept vehicle you need to have a V6 and you have to buy the whole kit that's the way to do it to keep it safe and so it works right and it's not going to be pricey aftermarket Corvette parts are everywhere everybody puts them in almost anything the kid itself will probably sell for 25 to 30 grand because the new car is 180,000 you can buy a brand new Malibu for $25 and put it together and it's not even it's a quarter of the price around I mean geez you can turn around and sell it for more money because it goes about 180 mph faster and they'll be famous quicker quick enough and I'll be making a bunch of money delivery we have that the whole right now is metal the shell is metal now it's not why it weighs more is they put a bunch of stupid things in it so I know what they're talking about I want to go ahead and try and get this going and I want partners from my group and his volunteering his mom because it's like the firebird and I don't know what she's scared for you can never ran near her and she says it's a drunk driver test so she wants to get involved and she's going to do it and he's going to get some sleep
Mac daddy
Me too this is an American company and I'm an American and it's our side of the family and Ken I don't know what he's doing we have to do the other side and he thinks that this car in the Corvette itself some problems been I don't know. Arnold then Arnold anyways we're talking to ben. And it's because of what Ken finds out with you so we probably want to do this
Biden
Yeah we want to do this I can't get these cars to my people and I own the company is fruitcakes want to make three a day or something I'm going to get them out of there cuz they're going to s*** everywhere but really I think that's true he's kind of thinking ahead a little you got a feeling of ken being very mad. He says he knows what to do they're going to try and steal them all day and night and it works for us we want to see that it's animal behavior they suck so damn bad they're so freaking stupid and that was Ken
Ben Arnold
He got to see it we can't get to the factories up yet they show up with armies of idiots we don't know what they're going to go down there with he shooters or nothing they're expecting them to fight and it'll still be here and it goes back to these mental patients it's a circle of stupidity
Thor Freya
