How LTA and Operators are Improving Public Transport Safety and Security
By 2030, 8 in 10 households will live within a ten-minute walk of a mass rapid transit (MRT) station, making Singapore’s train network the most comfortable, accessible, and efficient system. By 2040, the Land Transport Master Plan details a transport system that is convenient, well-connected, and fast. Here are the initiatives taken by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and public transport operators to improve public transport safety and security.
• The Government has invested heavily in upgrading the NSEWL and added a new train fleet. This will reduce breakdowns.
• LTA and Enterprise Singapore (ESG) have launched an innovation call, Accelerating Co-Innovation for Transformation and Export (Xcite). This initiative will help the government to improve productivity in transport operations and maintenance by leveraging technologies such as artificial intelligence, image analysis and automation.
• To improve performance, SMRT Corporation, the multi-modal public transport operator, has replaced the track circuit system. The new track circuit system is equipped with condition monitoring capabilities which will enhance the prognostics and prevention of track circuits failures.
• SMRT made enhancements to the power supply system. In June 2019, the company completed the installation of the Voltage Limiting Device on the NSEWL, which will help in the regulation of return voltage and prevent tripping of DC power.
• In buses and bus interchanges, SMRT has installed AI-enabled CCTV to enhance security and identify commuters in need of assistance.
• With Enterprise Singapore (ESG), The Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES), LTA and other railway partners, SMRT is working together to develop Singapore’s first railway standards for asset management, maintenance, safety and security, and service.
• SMRT has launched iCONTROL using digital twin technologies to achieve comprehensive situational awareness and enhance safety and security at the stations and depots.
• The Signal Warning System (SWS) has been launched to help train captains identify and warn train them of abnormal track conditions through visual and auditory alerts.
• The In-Cab Monitoring (iCAMS) system is another technology solution launched by SMRT which is undergoing trial. The system detects and alerts train captains and supervisors whenever signs of fatigue are detected through body and iris movements.
• LTA is using mass screening devices and X-ray machines with AI capabilities to make security enhancements and detect threats more efficiently. Other changes made to the stations are higher quality CCTV systems, bollards, welded-mesh fences, and At-Grade MRT tracks.
SMRT CEO, Neo Kian Hong, said, “Our solid safety record surpasses the standards set by our regulators. Our strong performance for the Public Transport Customer Satisfaction Survey and the Singapore Tourism Board’s Customer Service Excellence Awards (Transport) encourages and inspires us to continually find new ways to delight and move commuters. It has been a long journey, and we must ensure that we maintain these standards.”
Conclusion
Singapore’s public transport system is now more secure and safe. The government and public transport operators like SMRT are taking steady steps towards these goals to keep Singapore moving.
However, by being alert, vigilant and aware of your surroundings, commuters can play an important role in keeping Singapore’s public transport system safe.

8 Jan 2019 Patrik Schumacher Allegations in UK High Court, London
The late Zaha Hadid’s business partner claims he was forced to agree to drop the architecture practice’s name – and alleges animosity clouded fellow executors’ judgment, reports Building Design.
Legal papers lodged by Patrik Schumacher in an attempt to oust fellow executors of the late architect’s estate have been released by the High Court.
They reveal an extraordinary tussle for control of Zaha Hadid Architects – with Schumacher forced to agree to drop the founder’s name from the world-famous practice.
He also claims he was forced to agree payments totalling £7.75m by the design practice (referred to as Zaha Hadid Ltd or ZHL) to a holding company controlled by the other three executors and their appointees, in a move Schumacher claims would reduce “ZHL’s ability to continue as a going concern”.

This Baku building is a personal favourite of mine, an absolute peak building for this architect, the sensous and liquid-like shape is enticing. The flowing form just lifts out of the plaza, landscape and building are one – Editor Adrian Welch: photo : Hélène Binet
Born in Iraq in 1950, Hadid learned about abstract art and architecture at the Architectural Association in London. There, she found inspiration in unconventional forms. Before computers made her designs easier to put on paper, Hadid’s studio was known to use the photocopier in creative ways to bend lines and create new shapes. The type in today’s Doodle finds inspiration in Hadid’s energetic sketches, which explored both form and function.”

Building inspections Melbourne is always a great idea. The reason is very simple. If your house has ever been inspected, you know that it's likely to be a headache and most probably not the building that you really wanted it to be. With so many different renovations, there are just too many details that need to be taken care of.
I don't know how it happened but somewhere along the way someone stopped paying attention to the various building inspections Melbourne services were offering. It doesn't matter what state you live in, all houses have some sort of non-permitted building activity. In other words, someone has either stolen the building permit or hasn't followed rules. If you can't do anything about it then by all means call in a qualified building inspector, but what if you have done something illegal? What then?
That's a subject for another article but let's assume for a moment that building inspections Melbourne services did exist before anyone decided to tear down the house they had been buying. The owner would have had to make the necessary repairs to stay in compliance with local building codes. There would also have been additional costs associated with getting rid of the old structure and bringing in the new one. It's difficult to imagine any of these costs being worth having your house inspected every six months or so.
Now you may see where I'm going with this. Clearly the situation is much different today. Building inspections have become mandatory once the house has been built. So when you buy a house, unless it's a fixer upper or a rental property, you should get the building inspection conducted by an MRT engineer, qualified to inspect for structure damage and structural integrity.
The second thing that you ought to be aware of is that all Melbourne MRT inspectors are not the same. A qualified mr inspector will be specially trained to inspect for both structural integrity and the presence of any defects. This makes him much more effective at his job than an ordinary house inspection report. This is because he knows how to locate problematic areas and take care of them before they cause problems that run way beyond the initial construction issues. Also, he will be in a position to point out things like poor foundation footings that can lead to hydrostatic pressure and subsequent crack development which will compromise the whole structural integrity.
If you're thinking about building a new home in the city of Melbourne, you need to understand just what it takes to get one of these qualified inspectors. You need to understand that the inspector will visit your premises to conduct the pre-purchase building inspections. He will also have to talk to you about code compliance and permits. He will talk to you about the warranty on the construction and the materials that will be used. He will talk to you about just what kind of maintenance you'll need to do on the property. And, if you're putting up a condo or other multi unit dwelling it's also in his best interest to make sure that the condo or other multi unit dwelling is in good condition prior to you being able to move in.
Of course, you can always use your own licensed building inspector. However, there are significant disadvantages to using your own inspector. First of all, he isn't as experienced as a qualified or inspector. He may not be familiar with all of the current building codes and he won't be able to determine just what the problem is. The cost of the inspection plus the time spent learning the codes and being familiar with the various aspects of building construction won't make up for the expense of having a licensed inspector to perform the inspection.
As you can see, the benefits of having your building inspected by an experienced and qualified building inspector far outweigh any costs you may incur by having a building inspection performed. Don't put your investment at risk. Get a professional building inspection. Your peace of mind and your wallet will be glad you did. Find a qualified inspector for yourself today.

COST
Mobile Diesel Truck Repair service near Las Vegas NV: How do you set your Mobile diesel truck repair labor rates? Choosing the right labor rate can make or break your business in the long run. Follow these three principles to land on a rate you and your customers will feel good about:
● What customers do you want to attract?
● Never give something for nothing
● Back into the rate you need
The customers that you want will understand that cheap is expensive. If they go for the cheapest labor rate around, chances are they’ll end up spending more in the end.
Good customers are looking for quality, speed, and low hassle. Price is also in the mix but it’s usually not the main driver. Ultimately these customers want to eliminate unscheduled down time. Going only for the cheapest rate will not get them there, and they understand that. Even if they don’t, it’s an easy case for you to make.
So don’t sell yourself short. Your rate determines your clientele. The reality is that the customers you want will view you as lower quality if your labor rate is too low. Meanwhile, customers who are more cash-strapped, and less able to fulfill their end of credit terms, are attracted to shops with lower rates.
Some people will never pay the quoted price. It’s in their DNA to bargain and get price breaks. Don’t forget that good negotiation is about creating options, not about making ultimatums. So price breaks can make sense as long as they aren’t one-sided. You should never give a price break without some meaningful exchange of value.
Offer up options that will give you value in return. One example is to give a lower labor rate in exchange for the customer allowing you to proactively track their PMs. Ask them to agree to a list of PMs that they will pre-authorize you to do. They are exchanging a lower price for trust in you to do their PMs. Follow this practice when setting your diesel repair shop labor rates.
When customers ask what your labor rate is, this gives you a great opportunity to discuss the possibility of tracking their PMs. We charge $99 / hour, but for customers who allow us to proactively do PMs we charge $94 / hour. They win with a lower price. You win by having a guaranteed and pre-authorized stream of business.
If your labor rate doesn’t give you the profit you need, you will not stay in business long. Add up your total cost of labor and back into your minimum labor rate. Based on our profitability model, you should be earning at least 50% profit on labor. That is after covering the wages and benefits of not only your techs but their managers too (e.g. parts and service managers).
For example, if your technicians earn $20 / hour and as a group bill 200 hours / week, your wages for the week will be $4,000. Add in the weekly cost of your service manager and parts manager at $52,000 each, and you’re up to $6,000. Finally, add in taxes and benefits (let’s assume 20%) and you land at $7,200 a week. That’s a total cost of $36 / hour. To get a 50% profit on labor you would need to charge customers at least $72 / hour.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I really need to have that work done?
We will never tell you that it needs to be done unless it really does. We will make recommendations about work that we would advise be done. If you get it done now or later, by us or someone else is entirely up to you.
Do all of your repairs meet DOT specifications?
We pride ourselves in doing the job right, not only for you, but for our name as well. All of our repair work meets DOT and Federal requirements. We want you safe and satisfied. We would like to see you again.
Do you only perform basic maintenance or can you handle major repairs also?
We handle all of your repair needs. Whether it be something as simple as a light that needs replaced or a transmission, we can do it. Sometimes it may also be cheaper and easier to just repair it instead of a full replacement. That choice is yours.
How do you compare to the big companies on price, quality, and warranty?
Our prices not only compare, but most of the time they beat the big companies. Quality is the best in the business and we back up all of our work 100%.
Why should I perform maintenance?
It saves you money and prevents inconvenient repairs. Simply stated, maintenance costs are less than repairs. Properly maintained trucks or trailers that have had investments made in maintaining the fluids, filters, etc. will last longer, have fewer breakdowns and realize a lower overall cost per mile. It can be very frustrating sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck knowing that the cause could have been prevented by performing preventive maintenance.
How often should I rotate tires on my truck?
Your truck tires should be rotated every other oil change, or every 6000 miles. Neglecting to rotate truck tires is a major cause of premature truck tire wear.
Is it really necessary to replace my timing belt at the recommended interval?
YES. The failure of a timing belt in many commercial trucks can result in diesel engine damage. The cost of repairing a diesel engine with a broken timing belt is much greater than the cost of a timing belt replacement.
What does it mean if my CHECK ENGINE light comes on in my truck?
There are many sensors and computerized components that manage your commercial vehicle's diesel engine performance and emissions. When one of these fails, the "check engine" light is illuminated.
What should I do if my truck starts to overheat?
This is a very serious problem if your truck overheats for too long, you can damage your diesel engine. As soon as possible, find a safe place to pull off the road and shut the diesel engine off! Do not attempt to check the fluid level in the radiator; the hot fluid can cause severe burns. The best thing to do is have your truck towed to the nearest, trusted truck repair facility.
When should I replace my commercial vehicle's fuel filter?
To help ensure dependable, trouble-free performance, replace your truck's fuel filter approximately every 3,000 miles or as recommended in your commercial vehicle's owner's manual.
Should I consider using synthetic motor oil in my truck?
Synthetic motor oils can be a good choice for heavy duty diesel engines, or for vehicles that are used for towing (especially during hot weather), and commercial vehicles that operate in extremely cold or hot climates. Although more expensive than mineral-based oils, synthetic motor oils can improve fuel economy and provide longer intervals between preventative maintenance service.
How do I make sure my truck batteries have a good electrical connection?
Battery cables and terminals should be cleaned and inspected periodically to make sure they provide a good electrical connection.

Subaru Car End Up Being the "Believing Man's" Performance Car
From the post-World Battle II wreckage of Nakajima Airplane Firm emerged a company that made electric motor mobility scooters from leftover plane parts. Fuji Sangyo Company was eventually formed into twelve different operations. 6 of these separate entities came together to develop Fuji Heavy Industries in 1950, with the express intent of getting in the vehicle manufacturing sector. The name selected for the vehicle brand was Subaru, the Japanese word for the six-star cluster in the paradises, The Pleiaides. The name is rep of the six business that integrated to create FHI. From unpromising beginnings, the Subaru car, light trucks as well as sports energy vehicles has concerned represent a wacky, skilled selection of intelligent, free-thinking individuals that value top quality as well as performance in their automotive choices. Subaru is not placed in the "basic transport" mainstream of the auto sector. Rather, they have established themselves apart by targeting critical, enlightened, more youthful individuals with a preference for journey, that are considered as smart, strong, but different. This company marketing strategy is evidenced by the fact that Subaru was the first auto business to offer "boxer" engines in mass produced cars and trucks as well as SUVs. Sure, Porsche and Ferrari use or have actually offered boxer engines, however neither of these two suppliers might be thought about as having mass produced offerings. Additionally, Subaru has incorporated their fine All-Wheel-Drive system into all their versions, making them the only supplier to offer the traction advantages of all the wheels being driven by their high-revving boxer engines. Amongst one of the most prominent Subaru models have been the Tradition (1989 ), Impreza (1993 ), Wilderness SUV (1995) as well as the Forester SUV (1997 ). The Wilderness accomplished prestige in Western markets when their ad campaign featured Paul "Crocodile Dundee" Hogan as their representative. The highlights of the advertisements were the versatility, power and tough efficiency of this small SUV: Car-like comfort and attributes with off-road capability. Subaru car is to Subaru what AMG is to Mercedes Benz or Motorsports Division is to BMW. Turbo-charging began to be supplied on Impreza models with the appellation "WRX" to represent their World Rally Cup heritage. They updated efficiency also additionally with the enhancement of STi to assign a small sedan with a high output engine and also sporting activities suspension that was really-capable right off the showroom floor. As competitors in the World Rally Championship, Subaru took the producer's title three years straight, 1995-7. Numerous endurance documents and also platform coatings have been recorded by Subaru chauffeurs in all components of the globe. Brett Middleton has over ten years experience dealing with Subaru vehicles as well as has recorded all his knowledge into the Subaru Efficiency Manual. His business, MRT Efficiency has actually modified and serviced much more Subaru's in Australia than any kind of various other workshop.

MRT: The Start of Something New (and Dangerous?)
The clinical application of mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT) is still in its early stages, given that it remains illegal in the United States and Canada, and only recently was legalized in the United Kingdom. However, last year a team of US doctors lead by Zhang working in Mexico performed a type of MRT, spindle nuclear transfer (SNT), for a mother who had lost six children to Leigh syndrome, a neurological disorder caused by a mutation in her mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). This resulted in the first live birth of a baby boy following SNT. Here, I’ll describe SNT and how it was used in this particular case, followed by a brief discussion of the ethical issues that are preventing legalization of MRT in Canada.
In Timing is Everything for MRT, I described one of the three types of MRT known as pronuclear transplantation (PNT). While PNT involves fertilizing both the mother’s egg and donor egg before swapping pronuclei (Figure 1), SNT is performed prior to fertilization, so the donor’s nucleus is replaced with the mother’s nucleus. Zhang performed SNT rather than PNT because the couple he was treating was against destroying embryos for religious reasons. With SNT, an egg is discarded in the process rather than an embryo.
Figure 1. Outline of pronuclear transplantation (PNT), a form of MRT used to avoid mtDNA mutations from being passed on to offspring by replacing donor egg pronuclei with the mother’s pronuclei. The eggs are fertilized prior to swapping of the pronuclei, which means an embryo is discarded in the process.
As eggs develop and prepare for fertilization, they undergo one cycle of meiosis and then are halted in the middle of the second round, at metaphase II to be precise, until fertilization. At this stage, chromosomes are lined up in the middle of the cell preparing to be pulled to opposite poles by the spindle apparatus in order to divide the genetic material into two new cells. During SNT, the metaphase II spindle-chromosome complex is removed from the mother’s egg, which contains mitochondria with mutated mtDNA, and transplanted into a donor egg with healthy mtDNA that has also had its spindle-chromosome complex removed. Next, the egg is fertilized and implanted in the mother’s uterus via in vitro fertilization (Figure 2).
Figure 2. Outline of spindle nuclear transfer (SNT), another form of MRT that involves replacing the donor’s spindle-chromosome complex with the mother’s. Afterwards, the egg is fertilized and the embryo is implanted in the mother. This means that an egg is discarded in the process rather than an embryo. Note: the chromosomes are not concentrated in the nucleus during this technique, but were shown this way for the sake of simplicity in showing the movement of genetic material.
The patient treated by Zhang and colleagues was a 36-year-old woman who had four previous pregnancy losses and two deceased children, all from complications of Leigh syndrome. While the mother was healthy, she carried a mutation in a gene known to cause Leigh syndrome, present in 24.5% of her mtDNA. Yet, over 95% of her children’s mtDNA had this mutation. This made her a prime candidate for MRT.
Zhang performed SNT for five eggs, four of which developed into blastocysts following fertilization. The blastocysts were screened using preimplantation genetic diagnosis, which showed that one had the normal number of chromosomes (46) while three did not. This normal blastocyst was transferred to the mother’s uterus, and she had an uneventful pregnancy. She gave birth to full-term, healthy boy at 37 weeks, and analysis of various tissue and body fluid samples showed that only 1.6% of mtDNA was carryover from the mother. Thus, SNT was used successfully to replace the mother’s mutated mtDNA with the donor’s healthy mtDNA. There have been no updates on the baby since he was three months old, but monitoring his progress over the coming years will help us understand whether MRT impacts development after birth.
By now, you may be wondering why MRT remains illegal in Canada and the US despite the clear benefits. Diseases caused by mutations in mtDNA can be not only severe and fatal, but are also incurable. Additionally, there is no doubt this particular couple’s attempt to have children was gruelling and heart-breaking. Nonetheless, we cannot talk about assisted reproductive technology (ART) without considering the ethical implications of these ground-breaking advances.
One primary objection to human genetic modification when it comes to ART is that it is interfering with nature, or “playing God”. Some believe that there should be limit to the control humans are able to have over their biological makeup. Others suggest that the consequences of making genetic changes are still poorly understood, and therefore the natural, unaltered state should be protected. In contrast to this position, others would argue that it is difficult to claim that the natural state is superior when it is the source of the significant burden of human genetic disease. Furthermore, humans have a long history of striving to improve on their natural state, including pursuing treatments for disease and boosting immunity through immunizations. This further emphasizes the importance drawing a line to tell us how much control is too much.
There are also concerns that ART can be a form of eugenics, which is the use of genetics and heredity to improve the human race. There are two forms of eugenics: positive and negative. Negative eugenics pertains to efforts to prevent transmission of certain hereditary traits while positive eugenics relates to using hereditary knowledge to improve gene pools and promote fitness. Specifically, some have raised the concern that ART could have a significant impact on people living with disabilities. If ART becomes more accessible and even expected by society, women may feel pressure to use the techniques for their pregnancies to ensure they do not pass on any genetic diseases, for example Down syndrome. Furthermore, a society that favours using technology to minimize the chance of babies being born with disabilities could translate to a society that is intolerant of people already living with disabilities. In reply to this argument, some have pointed out that individual women are likely seeking ART to avoid imposing suffering on their future child, not to contribute to the marginalization of people with disabilities. Nevertheless, prenatal genetic testing may be harmful towards people with disabilities, regardless of the intentions of individual women.
At the end of the day, it is clear that there are still too many unknowns pertaining to ART and MRT for them to be fully implemented in our health care systems. Following the healthy baby achieved by Zhang throughout its life will help us to understand the long-term effects of genetic modifications in germ cells. Canada and the US are wise to wait until more studies about the consequences of genetic modifications are conducted before deciding how they will be regulated. The benefits of these technologies make them worth exploring further, but as a society we must proceed with caution to avoid causing more harm than we’re preventing.
