One classic game I play a lot of is TEST DRIVE 5, for the PlayStation.

It comes from a trilogy of TEST DRIVE titles published by Accolade and developed by Pitbull Syndicate, which was put into place because they saw how NEED FOR SPEED was really tearing up the track by that point in time, and sought to dust off the largely simulator-style TEST DRIVE games from the late '80s/early '90s to compete.

I had TEST DRIVEs 4, 5 and 6 as a kid, and I feel to this day that the fifth game is overall the most solid, and best-looking of those titles.

However, it has a weirdly unbalanced car roster.

Something TEST DRIVE 6 did better was putting cars into tiers, classes, based on their power and top speeds. So, if you picked a car that goes 150mph, you're racing w/ other cars that go about 140-160mph. Not in TEST DRIVE 5, though. You pick a Plymouth Hemi Cuda that goes 175mph and has fairly sluggish acceleration, and even on Normal difficulty, you might be left in the dust.

When you check the race data after the fact, you'll notice that the computer cars reach top speeds that go beyond their stats. On normal difficulty, that average is about 195mph. You're racing with, for example, a Shelby Cobra. Which goes about 174mph in the game, when YOU choose it... But somehow the competitor one is reaching 195mph, sometimes pushing 220mph (!!!) based on what course you've chosen to race on.

The available cars, when you start the game for the first time, range from solid choices (like the Dodge Viper GTS) to damn great (both the 1969 Corvette and Camaro) to... Not great! (The aforementioned Hemi Cuda, the 1998 Nissan Skyline GT-R.) And somehow, one of the worst cars in the game - the 1998 Ford Mustang GT, with its poor acceleration and 157mph top speed - is... A locked car? Why is that car LOCKED?

But suppose I do the TEST DRIVE 6 thing and put these cars into one of - based on the vehicle count and distribution - three tiers? Maybe a car like the Skyline is great when racing against a Cuda, or a Charger, or a Saleen Mustang.

So... Class 3, the best of the best. The fastest...

I think that's fairly easy... That belongs to anything going over 200mph in the game:

1998 TVR Speed 12 (235mph)

1998 Nissan R390 GT-1 (230mph)

Pitbull Special (229mph, incorrectly listed as 260mph)

1998 Dodge Viper GTS-R (225mph)

1969 Police Dodge Charger (225mph, incorrectly listed as 178mph)

1994 Jaguar XJ220 (218mph)

1968 Ford Mustang Hot Rod (211mph)

1998 Police TVR Cerbera (205mph)

So that seems fairly simple, right? Even something like the Daytona, which doesn't have the best acceleration, still gets in there. Most of the cars made up by the developers fit this criteria, too.

Class 2, I'd say, belongs to... Almost anything going from 175mph to 195mph.

Wait a minute, what's the Shelby Cobra doing here? But no Hemi Cuda (175mph) nor Jaguar XKR (178mph)?

The Cobra's here because of the acceleration, in comparison to those other two cars. That car has some real leapfrog starts, so it can hold its own against the 180-190mph league. The Cuda, XKR, etc. on the other hand... Don't... So they'll be in Class 1, albeit on the top floor. Much like how TEST DRIVE 6 sometimes did w/ certain cars...

So this is pretty much all over the place. The Hot Dog and Caterham Super 7 have the lowest top speeds, but actually have really good acceleration, so much so that you might even have a chance w/ them depending on the course you pick. Whereas some cars, like the Mustang GT and the Camaro Z28? The acceleration leaves a lot to be desired despite the speeds, and it feels like you're falling behind whenever you choose them. Even the Jaguar XKR was done dirty here, when it should be a class higher, but alas.

Each class has more than 6 cars, too, so theoretically... If the game had this kind of tier system going on, you'd still have more than 5 other cars to race with in your respective class.
