Ren has built with enough wood to be familiar with axes, but this isn't his axe - an yet he can feel his hands closing around it deftly and swinging it with deep familiarity during this fight. It's a sickeningly disorienting feeling, but soft and comforting in some way. his chest feels fluttery and warm somehow, though the tears on his face mingle coldly with the pre-dawn wind.

The taste of earth and the bitter sap of the tulips was in his mouth. Some vague memory played in his mind, it had begun with flowers and dye right? It hadn't always been blood. There was enough of his mind still there despite the tufts of fur beginning, despite the fact that he crouched on four paws.

"Hey, Ren! Hey, boy!" He heard what he registered as Impulse's voice all falsely cheerful as ever.

"I will warn you Impy, the stalactite to your left is rigged, and that it isn't quite the full moon yet. Just stay where you are a few more minutes. I'll be on my way."

"You don't have to be doing this at all." But at least the fucker, Impy, wasn't getting any closer.

"Yes, but Lizzie likes orange dye, and there's Bee."

And Etho, and Martyn, but those names, in current company, were best left unspoken.

joel did so well, winning in a proper blaze of glory like that— so fitting, especially after losing gem, his anchor. and his alliance with grian in the end was Killing Me. grian plain-faced telling him "you could win this," and saying he will give his life to joel? grian telling him "it's your turn."

i can't wait to see what grian was thinking before that final fight. he just kind of disappeared while joel was on an absolute rampage. and when they met back up for the final fight, he was actually fighting against joel, contrary to what he said before. maybe he realized that he knows joel, and joel would never be happy with a sacrifice. maybe he knows that because he knows what sacrifice did to him, way back when.

so he decided to fight, for joel's sake, and maybe his own, too. and when he died, he died falling. just like 3rd life.
