(2025-01-18 image ©talk home blog) Say goodbye to 3G! Many of us have done so already as Three, Vodafone and EE have already switched off 3G. Now the final company O2 are planning to switch of 3G by the end of the year, by which time the odds-and-ends of 3G for the other companies will be switched off - No more 3G. Will this affect me?

There is a survey much reported in the press stating that this will affect 4million people. Many commentators cannot see where this number comes from. I am not even convinced there were 4million 3G users prior to the switch off and there is no way that O2 had anywhere near this number. But the question for many is still how will it affect me?

Another related question is how useful was 3G data. People with 3G only phones will have found it too slow for modern web apps. Those with 4G or 5G phones may have seen them switch to 3G occasionally as a fall back but the data download was just too slow to be of any use. I don't think that 3G data will be missed.

A 3G phone would use the 2G network for calling and text, so anyone with a 3G phone will find it still works for calling and SMS on 2G.

The UK is really bad at letting go of old technology. 3G is 25 years old and replaced by 4G 15 years ago and 5G 5 year sago. We do not need it and switching it off will release frequency for the companies to re-farm as 4G. 3G will not be missed.

Next 2G, which is 35 years old, will be switched off by the end of 2030 - perhaps. The switch off of 2G is much more complex due to the large number of systems that 2G that 2G supports.
