Hi. Question, what is Gabriel's fashion style? In the show he's apparently the king of fashion but some of his designs suck tbh...

I'm not going to pretend that I understand high fashion enough to label Gabriel's style. I'm also not sure if the animators understand high fashion enough to label his style. Nothing about the show actually screams "fashion" to the point where I can't tell if the akumas are bad on purpose or not.

While you can connect certain akumas to specific high fashion looks such as loosely linking The Bubbler to Vivian Westwood's 1989 Harlequin suit (see below images), I don't think that's what the animators were actually doing. Any high-fashion similarities are probably an accident, especially since the word of god is that akumas choose their own appearances. Gabriel officially had nothing to do with the designs. Given all of that, it's far more likely that the various designs come from the animators trying to keep things interesting while working within the confines of animation.

3D animation greatly limits what looks you can do. It's incredibly costly to animate a new character or even just a new outfit. That's why the characters generally only have one look and why most of Marinette's designs are things like accessories and posters. Those are way easier to animate!

Outfits and character designs also have to greatly limit their moving parts as each uniquely moving element vastly increases the cost. It's why all of the characters with long hair transform into heroes with pigtails or pony tales. Animating those is way easier than free flowing hair because you can treat those as one unit without it looking too bad, but free-flowing hair just looks silly as you can see when Marinette is riding her scooter:

I don't think any of this excuses the show's bad fashion sense, though. They chose to make the lead and the villain fashion designers. That's a choice with obvious repercussions for the way people will view the show and yet the show's fashion elements feel as slapdash as the Chinese elements, showing a clear lack of care for the world they're trying to create. It feels like fashion was only included because girls like fashion and not a choice made because the show wanted to root itself in the setting (Paris is the fashion capital of the world). While it's fun to joke about how terrible Gabriel and others look, when I get serious, I'm way more judgmental of the creators than the characters.

Knowing how to design a character isn't the same as understanding fashion. It is a specialty unto itself. A true field of expertise that people spend their lives learning. It's also a field that gets a lot of flack for being "girly" with women often being judged for caring too much about fashion. Those are two things you need to keep in mind if you're going to make fashion a big focus of your show for girls. And if you're going to have episodes focused on environmentalism? Maybe talk about fast fashion and not non-issues like trash being blasted into space?

What I'm saying is that, if you want to have a show or story focus on the fashion industry, then you do need to do some actual research and, ideally, hire someone to help guide those elements. A thing the writers absolutely could have done since they have the money for that! I don't think that's the route they took, though. I've never heard anyone mention it. Fashion doesn't even feel like a major part of Marinette's character! She rarely talks about it.

All of which is a very long winded way to say that I fully agree that a lot of the show's designs suck, but I think that fact is just one of the many little ways you can see how little care was put into the baseline world building. If Gabriel was a movie director instead and Marinette wanted to be a director too, then the bad fashion would still be commented on, but it wouldn't feel like a mark against the characters. Alternatively, the show could have used the bad fashion as a running gag in the show about Gabriel being bad at his job. Instead, we get people claiming that Gabriel is a great designer and I'm just sitting here going, "you couldn't even get this minor element right? Really?"

3D Test Animation of my Character!

Been once again super busy with work lately, but found some time to sneak in getting this little project done!

I've recently changed up my profile pictures to use a character design that I can actually credit to myself! I will always love Leafeon and will miss using them as a profile picture, but the biggest problem with using them as a way to identify me is that they aren't really my character or my design. And my own iteration of Leafeon's model isn't that derivative anyway, nor would I really want it to. And also considering how long I've been a FiM fan, I think it's a long time coming that I finally make a design of a pony for myself to use as a sona!

With that said, when it comes to this model, I started working a bit on it a few months back. Mostly in the coat coloring and headshape department. The head topology is the same as before, but now I have controls in the rig that can change the head shape to feel more "stallion"-like. For how I tuned the shape for my character, he's kind of got a shape in-between a full on mare and stallion head shape.

Work ceased for a while as I got involved working on a project called "Billie Bust Up!" (which I will talk more about later if that got your attention, don't worry!). It's been very busy, but the past week I decided to sit down and get this done on my own time. I did a few streams where I would work continuously on my model, like getting all the hair done, and working on all the animation. You can find all the VODs to these in the Live section on YouTube Channel. I really like doing livestreams, as it has a very VERY obvious affect on how I am able to focus, and makes working on things a lot easier and more efficient. I want to do them more again, I miss streaming a lot. Maybe for BBU I'll find a way, but only time will tell.

This animation was really fun to make. Haven't really done super dynamic quadruped animation since I was involved in the G5 pony game, so it was nice to get at it again to refresh my skills there. Didn't feel too hard, so that's a good sign I wasn't getting too rusty. And rendering was not nearly as bad as you might expect. Talked a bit about this during my Marina commission about my new methods of denoising renders that were done in Cycles. This entire render uses a flat 128 sample count, and using my new methods that keeps noise temporally stable and then denoise after, it produces a very VERY nice result. Once I rap up releasing this animation, I'll try to finally record a guide, or at least the process I take, on how I get this done, as it's definitely a viable option in a lot of cases.

Thank you guys for sticking around during my staggered activity on this channel! Once I started getting involved in real animation jobs, it's been tough finding a good balance between my own personal animation projects and actual animation work. And lately I've been feeling the urge to actually try to find that balance so that I can do both. Hopefully I find it, because I miss this!

Also, I really like obscure Mario Characters. Like the ones younger Mario fans don't really care about, like Geno, Peasley, Dimentio, Prince Haru, and Doopliss.

New headcanons for this weird, but sweet digital boy!

• Alter! owns a Nintendo 3DS. He absolutely LOVES to play Nintendog! He even has a bag filled with several types of games & stylus.

• He make flipnote hatena animations in his own time. He also draws on his sketchbook too, and much like Colette, he's hostile when people try to touch or see any artwork he makes.

• If he find out that the DS lines has been discontinued and stores are closed down, he'll cry. Like badly. Speaking of which-

• Alter! would make the most beautiful, graceful cries with crystal clear teardrops, but also the ugliest soppy, nose running cries imaginable.

• He ADORE Pangyo. He loves the little cartoony panda guy. He even carries him around like a teddy bear and hugs him. (Even make ugly sobbing noises over how cute he is)

• As stated before, he read manga. He even formed a little manga club with fallen & Pangyo. (Please excuse fallen. He doesn't know & wants to read books, okay?)

• He would play beauty idol: fashion queen on his mobile phone.

• he played some old app games that were once available only to get removed later on. He still has that wallpaper he downloaded from the MLP puzzle game on his mobile phone. (It's an Equestria girl rainbow dash but as an anime girl for a wallpaper.) He also played cat simulator as well!

• He would eat those sonic the hedgehog popsicle

• "Do you like waffles? Yeah we like waffles!..."

• He loves fashion game. He has some on both his ds & phone where he can spend hours customizing his character.

• Of course, he plays visual novel game as well. So when he found out about the existence of Imagine: make up artist, he fell in love with it despite how short the game is!

• Probably actually own a newgrounds account.

• Has a oversized sanrio plushie somewhere in his digital realm. (He uses it like a bed and sleeps on it)

• He listen to Nightcore alongside eurobeat.

• He actually likes to annoy Og legacy. He's very aware of the fact he hates him but playfully messes with him by making him cringe.

• Legacy would've gotten a badass cyber criminal version of himself with good confidence & charisma like his siblings, but y'know- some setbacks were made and he ended up getting the one he has right now.

• Alter! doesn't know much about the real world. Hint why he ended up doing something that labeled him as a criminal without him knowing or intended to. The worst crime he can commit is vandalizing. But other than that, he doesn't really mean any harm.

• to make up for the stuff he "borrowed", he leaves behind an apology note with a sad face as stated before. But he would also leave behind small money (the most he can leaves is $3). Weirdly enough, despite having some cash carried around, he doesn't know what a "dollar" is. Let alone coins. (He refer the penny as "nice shining brown thing" since he doesn't know what they're called but he thought it looks nice... Poor guy.)

• Maybe a non-canon hc, but there was a time where Alter! attempted to recolor Pro-Controller Legacy into a princess peach themed cause he thinks it would be cute and Pro got mad at him over it. (He even once tried to decorate him with stickers & glitter much. Alter! Ended up running toward og Legacy and hid behind him while Pro continued to chase after him.)

• He secretly drew his own ponysona and played Pony creator on a website. (He absolutely tries to hide this from the other legacies. He'll die of embarrassment if they find out. Btw, his ponysona is an alicorn!)

• He's a pokemon guy. His team would be filled with Ghost & electric type. (His two main companions there is rotom & Pikachu. He also has a Gengar in his team!)

• SLUMBER PARTY!!!! Alter! would be super ecstatic to throw a slumber party with the other legacies. The one he often gets is Pangyo, Fallen, & Pro Controller Legacy. He has to really convince the other to join in on the fun. (He's the one that brings snacks & drinks to the party. They also ordered pizza there too. Og legacy got pissed when they made the mess in his room.)

• He plays super smash bro with Pro controller. (He main Sora, pikachu, and sonic. Meanwhile Pro main Terry & ryu)

• Him alongside the three other legacies goes out on a boy night.

• Him and Pro controller are somewhat friends! Despite Pro literally being a recolor version of Legacy & having the exact same personality, he's slightly okay with Alter Error. Mostly because they play games with each other. They're only friends cause of that.

i really wish mlpG5 was just the 2D youtube cartoon, the 3D netflix show is so boring and unappealing to look at

the fact that its 3d and so obviously limited in budget and scope means they cant easily go to fun locations, make new characters or creatures to see, or many fun cartoon gags

i dont know why zipp is a detective? why does she have batman goggles? why is sunny given nothing to do, they've made her personality "makes smoothies." pipp shouldn't have been a princess, if she wasnt id probably find her whole pop star influencer thing a lil more endearing. hitch shouldnt be a cop. i dont like the cocomelon baby. izzys okay but she doesnt have any depth. i like misty

i just keep coming back to how boring these characters are, none of their conflicts are fun to figure out and they dont have interesting dynamics with each other

the movie was good! it was a nice setup for the most part and i was excited to see what was coming next but so far I've just been disappointed

havent read the comics and im on the 4th episode of the newest chapter (also lol i dont like the way this show has been released i assume its some scummy netflix thing so they dont have to pay creators) but i really dont think my opinion's gonna change much. I'll keep watching tho because im stupid and I want it to get better

So I used some 3d pony creator to make Midnight Shine in 3D!

And yes, Midnight Shine was once named Strawberry Core but now she is named more appropriately for a Thestral :3

Strawberry is now a separate character too :3

So essentially, I have 5 ponysonas

Strawberry Core, Quick Fix, Bright Spark, Midnight Shine and Evening Breeze :3

I love your art and I am jealous of your productivity but sometimes I am afraid you are on a speedrun to burnout. Please remember to not overwork yourself

If you want to know the reason for my productivity, it is because I do not have a job and I am pursuing a part-time masters degree (in biology) right now (with the support of my partner). I will have to scale back my artwork when I get a job.

I admit that part of the reason I go so hard on art right now is because I would love to make money off my art, and this is the first time I've had to pursue that. My hope is that if I develop a backlog of art (videos on my channel, 3D models in shops) I can build more slowly once I am busy with everything.

And like, I complain about having to format my prints, but to be clear I really enjoy 3D modeling. It also feels good to create art that people like and can sort of... use to help themselves creatively? Like when I was younger I would make "bases" for other people to use to design pony characters. I would always include tons of different options as if they were a character creator on dolldivine (screenshots below are from my dA circa 2012).

I realized that the MLP and doll custom comunities are kind of similar to that- you can take something that is structurally similar (same lineart,same doll) and change it to be entirely unique!

Anyways, tangent aside, you don't have to be jealous of my productivity OR worried for me, cause I aint got a job, and the alternative is me playing minecraft all day which is actually worse for my depression believe it or not. but thank you for the kind thoughts!!

Why do you update your ask blogs so slowly?

I'm a full-time student, and I am working under a contract at the moment my friend. Each of my fan works are out of a place of fun and whimsy, and I do not make any money off of them as I would with my specialization. I make 3d character models for games- and unfortunately that is more time consuming than my drawings are. That is a very large job, especially since I am currently the ONLY character artist on the team! (We're tiny as fuck).

My 3D pipeline includes; reference research phase > concept art phase > High-Res Sculpture > Game-Ready retopology of the High-Res > Unfolding the Game Res > Baking the hi-res onto the Game-res > hand painting the textures without destroying the hi-res bake > Assembling Texture maps onto the model > rigging the model for animation, with the Animator's input so that I have it set up exactly how they like it.

I'm sorry, but I do not subscribe to the title "content creator" because I'm not a cow that just churns out drawings for people to snort like cocaine. As much as I'd like to work that fast, I'm afraid anything I post would suck.

I'm glad you like my work and are excited to see more of it though! That interest from folks is what keeps me excited to keep going.

HOWEVER; I am bringing a long time pal of mine on-board to help me write for @deadliest-jellybaby !! I've been regurgitating all my ideas at him for weeks and he's been shitting out some good ideas in response. Hopefully that will speed up the process and we can give y'all some better art and story.

I have a lot of other stuff to catch up on with the pony askblog too, but life is absolutely SHITTING on my head right now. I hate being an adult. :(
