I'm thinking of getting one of those robot vacuums, but don't know how to start picking the right one. Do you have opinions on the matter? Do you like yours, and if so, what model is it?
I have a Xiaomi S10 EU, which is a midrange model that I think is now discontinued in favour of the S20? Xiaomi does a pretty good job with their designs, my family have various Xiaomi models that all work fine. Roborock is another brand I've heard good things about, and they're an offshoot of Xiaomi and seem to be where a lot of design innovation is so presumably that's a good sign. I assume iRobot is still making Roombas but I've never used a Roomba.
(The craziest new stuff from Roborock includes a robot arm for picking up and moving small objects out of the way? Crazy, you can now teach stabby to thrust!)
A few notes
1) They work best if you can keep your floor clear and generally free of small objects, and obviously don't navigate stairs and steps well. My apartment has very little stuff on the floor, and all my cables and wires are tucked into corners and along skirtings. If your wife has filled your house with chintz you may have a hard time getting a robot around on the floor.
Robovacs love to eat bag straps and shoelaces and charging cords, so if you tend to have those laying around on the floor and don't have the wherewithal to clear them up, you'll probably spend a lot of time untangling things from the brush.
2) They can handle most area rugs, but not all, e.g. it handles my thin cotton living room rug with short tassels without an issue but I have to move my thick kitchen floor mat out of the way or it'll eat the longer, thicker tassels. You can mark areas as no-vacuum zones if this isn't your bag.
3) Definitely spring for one with at least LiDAR, which you can see by the little stick-up lighthouse module on the top that houses the LiDAR module. Without LiDAR the robot has to just bump around semi-randomly to navigate, which is slow and inaccurate. It can build a map but the map is very poor and it barely knows where it is.
With LiDAR it knows exactly where it is, because it knows where it isn't. The very newest and most expensive bots do away with rotary LiDAR and just use forward looking cameras and 3D depth sensors to do VSLAM but if you're going for that price range from a big manufacturer you'll probably be fine. Most companies list their sensors on their site, but they often use weird names so it can be hard to tell.
(see above, with and without a LiDAR tower. Some very new models can retract the LiDAR tower to go under low furniture.)
4) You can cover a lot of house without needing the self-emptying base stations even if you run it regularly, I'd say probably around 200m² in a fairly ordinary dust environment. In my 50m² apartment I run it at least every weekday and empty out the integrated dust container once a week and that's usually fine, and I don't have any particular air filtration running, but I do keep the windows mostly closed when I can.
5) Speaking of maintenance, I don't use the mop feature on mine but it does keep your floors cleaner while requiring more attention to be paid to water levels. I'm actually going to try using mine more now and see how that goes. This is one thing where I think the stations might make sense even for a pretty small apartment. My brother uses the mop feature on his all the time and he likes it.
6) General maintenance: not that much! It'll buzz you on your phone when it thinks a component has hit end of life but so far I don't think anyone is using DRM to force you to use first-party parts or making you throw away things that are working, you can just manually reset the timers, although so far when the warnings do come up I tend to agree that it's time to replace a part.
You have to empty out the dust and change the water, and if it eats something you might spend a few minutes detangling the rotating brushes. The brushes will get knotted with hair and need cleaning every couple weeks to months depending on how much hair and how long it is, but most models come with a little knife tool for cutting the hair. Never tried the models that advertise that they don't get tangled.
7) Bonus nerd shit you probably shouldn't do. If you really do not want your Robovac connecting to the cloud, there's some work on developing self-hosted management servers that you can point a rooted robot at, and of course you can root your vacuum cleaner, because it's just an embedded Linux box on wheels. The open source management server software is called Valetudo.

Sibyl itself is promoting conflicts to expand itself, and then denying asylum to the refugees which is why they're confined to Dejima/Kyushu. Sibyl lets MFA do the dirty work and it's obvious that Sibyl just turns a blind eye to this because it benefits their colonisation approach. I wonder what Kogami's thoughts will be when he comes to realise that his "democratisation" in Siam Reap (Psycho Pass Movie) was just a part of Sibyl's grand plan. Also Kona Island? Didn't Rutaganda and his mercenaries live on an island? The knowledge that Sibyl would let the world suffer, after having seen the true effects of it in his journey abroad and that probably every person he met or lost on his journey (including the people that Tenzing lost) was suffering due to Sibyl's duplicity. In Case 3 Novel, Frederica is investigating the Peacebreakers in Tibet-Himalaya and Garcia by extension. Honestly, Kogami Shinya seeing the horrors of war, trying to help people and then returning to become a cog in the System is a tragic enough ending for me. I guess this was the meaning of that painting in that room. (The Abyss, I assume?)
Anyhow, I'm on my fourth rewatch (first time with subs so thank god I can follow the dialogues), and Sibyl has a knack of grinding my gears (pun intended), I've come to despise the System as much as Kogami. I'll delve into a proper review later, for now just accept my ramblings. I have 10,000 thoughts on Akane too, who in this movie punched me right in the heart, honestly I don't know how Akane-chan is so strong. I admire her grit.

Embarking on a washroom renovation journey can be both exhilarating and daunting. With Avivakeeon Interio's expertise, transforming your washroom into a personal sanctuary is within reach. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the essentials, ensuring a comprehensive makeover that seamlessly blends function with style.
Initial Assessment and Planning
The linchpin of any successful renovation project is a thorough assessment and meticulous planning. Begin by critically analyzing the existing space: Is it maximized for functionality, or does it fall short in addressing your needs? Consider factors such as the size of the washroom, the current layout, and any specific issues that need attention.
Once you have a clear picture of the space, set objectives for the transformation. Do you wish to enhance the aesthetic appeal, improve storage, or upgrade fixtures for better efficiency? Consulting with professional interior designers from Avivakeeon Interio can provide valuable insights and ensure that your vision is achievable within your budget. Create a detailed timeline and budget, accounting for all potential expenses to avoid unexpected costs down the line.
Choosing the Right Color Palette and Fixtures
The choice of color palette and fixtures can significantly influence the ambiance of your washroom. A well-chosen color scheme can make a small bathroom appear larger and more inviting. Neutral tones such as whites, beiges, and light grays provide a clean and timeless backdrop, whereas bolder colors can be used to infuse character and warmth.
Select fixtures that complement your chosen palette and match the overall design theme. Modern minimalist designs often feature sleek, angular fixtures in silver or matte black, while a more traditional setting might favor vintage-style faucets and clawfoot tubs. When choosing materials, prioritize durability and ease of maintenance. Opt for high-quality finishes that resist rust and wear, ensuring longevity.
At Avivakeeon Interio, state-of-the-art technology and design aesthetics converge, providing customized fixture solutions that cater to your preference whether you lean towards contemporary or classic styles.
Incorporating Storage Solutions and Accessories
An organized washroom exudes a sense of calm and order, making efficient storage solutions imperative. Consider built-in shelving, vanity units with integrated storage, or wall-mounted cabinets to maximize available space without compromising on style.
- Vanity Units: Opt for vanities with deep drawers and compartments to house toiletries and towels neatly.
- Open Shelving: Ideal for displaying decorative items or storing frequently used items for quick access.
- Over-the-Toilet Storage: Utilize vertical space with slender cabinetry above the toilet.
Accessories can further enhance the functionality and aesthetic of your washroom. Incorporate elements like stylish towel bars, decorative mirrors, and artful lighting to personalize the space. Select these accessories to blend with your design theme for a cohesive look.
With Avivakeeon Interio's comprehensive approach to washroom design, integrating innovative storage options and accessories becomes a streamlined process, culminating in a space that is both beautiful and practical. Transform your washroom into an oasis with Avivakeeon Interio's expertise, creating an inviting retreat that mirrors your personal style.

I don't talk about my professional life on Tumblr very often, but I'm actually a wildly successful Grandmaster of Product Development at Internet Of Things Inc in Palo Alto, CA. I'm the genius behind numerous very profitable products you may have seen on store shelves or TV Informercials. Some of my latest hits include:
A subscription based weed whacker that uses only $399.99 proprietary string spools. Also takes $79.99 bottles of wifi-enabled pesticide fluid that are automatically injected into the grass via our patented 3D-printed nozzle design and aerosolized by the spinning string. Rumors that this fluid contains Agent Orange are false: we have added green dye to it.
A suite of smart home products including automatic thermostats, lights, speakers, and doorknobs. Unlike competing products that lock you out of your home if you miss a payment or your internet connection is interrupted, our locks you in and turns the thermostat up/down, strobes the lights, and plays InfoWars podcasts at full blast until you pay up.
A meal planning service with built-in cooking device. Food is delivered in proprietary frozen packets that come with a removable single-use RFID tag. Simply place the packet in the WeCookIt, close the door, insert the tag, and it will heat your food with microwave radiation (that's the same thing used for the WiFi it needs to verify that your food isn't pirated). Available for $1699.95, food packets cost $25-45 per meal on average ($750-$1350 per month with a one-meal per day plan).
A subscription-based pacemaker. Now before you say anything, no, it does not shut down and kill you if you miss a payment: that would be unethical and more importantly illegal. But it turns out that there's no law against it making your heart spell out "I AM A CHEAP ASS MOTHERFUCKER" in morse code at 10-minute intervals 24/7!
An AI-based long-distance dating service. Instead of trying to find an ideal partner for you, it creates one using a combination of ChatGPT to have romantic conversations with you and our proprietary AI art engine trained off data scraped from instagram to generate selfies! Unfortunately we haven't worked out the bugs in the training data and it has a bad habit of either suicide-baiting users or trying to make them wire all their money to unknown foreign bank accounts (the annoying thing is these accounts aren't even affiliated with the company: I have no idea who's getting it but man they must be rich by now) if a single profile remains active for too long.
A Smart Smoke Alarm. It automatically records data from cameras, microphones, and numerous other sensors 24/7 which we sell to insurance companies so that in the event of a fire they can analyze your life and look for an excuse to not pay out.
LEGAL DISCLAIMER: THIS IS SATIRE. THERE IS NO COMPANY CALLED INTERNET OF THINGS INC IN PALO ALTO, CA TO MY KNOWLEDGE. IF A COMPANY BY THIS NAME DOES HAPPEN TO EXIST, I DO NOT CLAIM TO REPRESENT THEM, AND THEY CAN GO FUCK THEMSELVES. IN ADDITION IF THIS COMPANY DOES EXIST I DO NOT CONDONE OR ENCOURAGE BURNING DOWN THEIR GODDAMN OFFICES, BUT MAN WOULDN'T IT BE FUNNY IF-

Was the next US stealth fighter revealed by Lockheed on Instagram?
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 07/09.2023 - 19:26in Military
One of the world's leading stealth aircraft manufacturers released an enigmatic rendering on Instagram last week, leading many to wonder if we have just seen for the first time a competing project for the new U.S. Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter.
On July 1, Lockheed Martin posted a series of images on its official Instagram account in celebration of the 80ºth anniversary of the company's legendary Skunk Works division.
Most of these simple designs represented innovative aircraft designed and fielded by Skunk Works in the last eight decades, such as the U-2 spy plane, the fast SR-71 Blackbird, the stealth F-117 Nighthawk and fifth-generation F-22 Raptor fighter.
But the final image did not look like any jet that we have seen emerge from Lockheed Martin's hangars before... Many have theorized that this design may actually be of an aircraft competing for the NGAD contract, which may mean that this is the first new stealth fighter in the world to be revealed on Instagram.
What do we know about the NGAD fighter?
The United States Air Force has been funding the development of a new air superiority stealth fighter scheduled to replace the F-22 Raptor since 2014. But for years, this development has explicitly focused on the maturation of new technologies for the enterprise. It was only recently that the U.S. Air Force announced that it was diverting its Next Generation Air Domain (NGAD) effort from the maturation of technology to the launch of a new operational fighter, with a winning project now expected to be chosen in 2024.
This new fighter is expected to be more stealthy than any other that came before it, with superior sensor range and data fusion capabilities, and a bunch of Artificial Intelligence-enabled drone wings flying next to it. In fact, it is expected that this jet is so far beyond the most advanced fighters of today that it will serve as a basis for an entirely new generation of fighters - which we will know as the 6ª generation.
Image of Northrop Grumman showing a possible new stealth fighter.
Based on official statements from the USAF, we know that there are still two companies competing for the NGAD fighter contract - although we cannot say for sure which ones. It is assumed that the three main U.S. aerospace contractors - Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Lockheed Martin - each had their competitor in the ring, and there is no way to tell which of these three may have already been eliminated.
Lockheed, however, is widely considered the pioneer in this competition, with two stealth fighters already in service and decades of experience with this type of enterprise.
Boeing's proposal for a sixth-generation fighter.
But it's not just the time that took some to wonder if this simple design represents one of the favorites for the replacement of the F-22. There are also similarities between this rendering and the previous renderings of the 6ª generation fighters that Lockheed Martin has released over the years.
Renderings, leaks and promotional images of Lockheed Martin's 6th generation fighters
Over the years, Lockheed Martin gave several not so subtle tips about its interest in launching a 6ª generation fighter to the public, starting in 1999 with its X-44 Manta - a tailless and hang gliding aircraft based on the F-22 Raptor, but intended to test the feasibility of an aircraft that depended on 3D thrust vector control to compensate for the removal of control
Rendering of the X-44 Manta.
Modified rendering of the 6ª generation fighter.
Today, it is difficult to deny the similarities between the Manta concept and the renderings we saw in the 6ª generation fighters.
The behind-the-scenes work on this concept seemed to continue well after the completion of the Manta program, with Lockheed Martin launching a calendar for journalists in 2012 that showed a different advanced hunting design that seemed to borrow some design elements of the YF-23 from Northrop Grumman who competed and lost to the F-22 for the Advanced Tactical Fighter contract in 1991.
Lockheed Martin's concept of "next generation hunting".
This design would appear again in promotional materials released in the following years, including a video released in 2017, although in the same year Lockheed Martin released the first rendering of a different design:
Lockheed Martin's 6ª generation fighter is rendered in 2017.
This design seems to have been transported to more recent renderings released by Lockheed Martin, including graphics released to promote its LMXT tanker aircraft last year:
Then, in October 2021, images of a very unusual and stealthy design appeared on a truck at Lockheed Martin's Helendale radar cross-section measurement (RCS) facility, raising new questions about the heir to the 6th generation hunting program.
An object similar to a stealth aircraft outside the Lockheed Martin facility in Helendale.
However, despite Lockheed's clear historical stealth, the incredible excess costs associated with the F-22 and F-35 may end up damaging the company's chances of securing another advanced fighter contract. And the U.S. Air Force's concerns about ensuring that the country's top contractors remain funded to continue the competition can also encourage USAF officials and lawmakers to look elsewhere for America's next stealth fighter.
As a result, this new yield may not even be a real competitor for the NGAD contract, but it may be a revelation of Lockheed Martin's entry that has already been removed from the race. If this is the case, it seems likely that the NGAD design will come out of Northrop Grumman or Boeing.
In any case, we will probably not know what this rendering represents until a winner of the NGAD contract is announced in 2024.
And when the time comes to announce the winner of this new poaching contract, we can only guess if this announcement will be made via Instagram...

Cylindric Sonata - Part 1
Jastes Verdan | Civitrecce | Present Night
This drabble is preceded by Starfall, and is part of The Mind Electric plot.
Starsight towered, Jastes felt confident in thinking.
He always tried to be accurate, for his own clarity and for when he related his experiences to the rest of the resistance. He was often made fun of for his serious and precise descriptions, and he supposed he was a little extra earnest about it.
This place really was massive, even on the scale of Civitrecce and its skyscrapers. Offices, factories, employee housing - it dominated part of the suburb it held dominion over, stark silver against the early evening skyline. Glass and steel behemoths flurried with activity even at this hour, the sun only recently set; the shipyards were almost overrun with trolls and robots ferrying parts to and fro across the skeletons of spacecraft in various states of progress.
Calls and curses echoed as he used an ID - not his personal one - on a card reader for one of the smaller factories (one that produced smaller, more specialized parts for filters) and quietly walked in the sliding glass doors, taking in his surroundings.
He didn’t look like himself, of course.
He’d spent the earlier part of the evening shaping his face and hands so neither could be used to identify him, and had had his current clothes made out of pieces of several different shirts and pants so they couldn’t be tracked by brand or purchasing location.
Once it would’ve felt odd to have straight, shoulder length hair, or a narrow nose, but he was long used to temporarily altering his appearance.
He took in his surroundings - a fairly standard gray and white lobby with a few decorations, the receptionist barely looking up to acknowledge him - and kept moving. Looking purposeful meant he would be far less likely to be stopped, though he had a cover if he did; both he and his alias were registered mechanics, and the factory was having trouble with one of its large-scale specialized 3D printers.
It had been hacked, requiring a particular maintenance service - one the factory had already booked with their usual servicer, but keeping information private in Civitrecce was like trying to dam the ocean. Leaks were inevitable.
So no one would think much of it if another company had acquired the information and wanted to make their own bid for repair, sending one of their trolls in before the appointment.
He was pretending to be an olive; the narrow caste gap made it easier to fool any sensors that might pick up his vitals, and he was less likely to get hassled by a supervisor if he appeared midblooded. He’d also made his voice a little higher, different enough that it wouldn’t match any existing vocal samples of him that could be found in a database. He’d given himself facial markings to better confuse any recognition tech attempting to pick him out, and he’d made sure to change his fingerprints as well.
He was as disguised as he could reasonably be, aside from changing his body type - given that skinny trolls with angled faces weren’t uncommon, he wasn’t going to fret about that. It would’ve taken longer than he cared to spend on a simple scouting mission.
He had to admit as he walked down a hall that the place seemed quite well-maintained. It was cleaner than several factories he’d been in before. The sound of machinery thrummed through the building, but it wasn’t deafening.
As he turned at a junction to find the helm room, reading off the helpfully placed signs, a cerulean overseer bustled past him without bothering him, merely yawning to themself and grumbling something about new policies and lower output.
Unsurprising, given the place was now under very different management.
Jastes had never paid too much attention to Starsight before; it had a somewhat better reputation than several other places, so while it was abhorrent as any other cog that served the imperial machine, it hadn’t been on the resistance’s target list. Its former CEO had been rather unusual among the city’s highblood elite; a permanently injured blueblood who (judging from the yellowblood’s research) had clearly been set up to fail when he had been given leadership.
Yet he hadn’t. Then he’d somehow lost it anyway to the least likely of suspects.
Jastes had had his best - in terms of skill, anyway - technopath investigate, but even Egret hadn’t been able to understand exactly how it had happened, shaking his head and saying (in more colorful language) that he’d never seen anything like this before and didn’t want to again.
All he’d been able to confirm was that Chimer Latrai indeed had not stolen Starsight as she claimed, not that such an act matched her style to begin with. The fuchsia politician was an oddity, but one the yellowblood minded far less than others. All evidence suggested she was genuine about her support for lowblood rights.
If only she’d stop searching for him and his group, he thought with a sigh. She couldn’t be trusted, no matter how well-intentioned she was. Associating with anyone that high-profile in imperial politics was a death sentence no matter how discreet they were. The empire would finally find the resistance and crush them after all these sweeps.
Highbloods couldn’t understand; he didn’t blame them. No amount of theory and good intentions could match a lifetime of looking over your shoulder. Of wondering which of your friends would be next on the culling fork, conscripted with no warning, or taken for a helm.
Speaking of…
He paused in front of the helm room, which was of course locked, its black metal door no doubt warded with psiionically resistant material against interference. If it weren’t for that, he would have been able to feel the slight crackle of energy against his skin.
The sleek retina scanner on the lock winked at him tauntingly. Fortunately, he already had his tech prepared.
A useful thing about his power; once he’d solidified his work, it wouldn’t ping on any sensors, though he couldn’t change or add anything if he was being suppressed.
So it was purely mechanical when his eye projected a digital iris template that was not his own, one retrieved earlier using his hack of the 3D printers as a distraction.
Most retina scanners weren’t actually good enough to tell the difference between a genuine troll eye (or technological hybrid) and the code an iris scan was converted to. Such tech was worth more than some lowbloods made in a lifetime, rarely invested in by any except the most wealthy seadwellers.
The door swung open with a click and a gentle push from his hand. He stepped through and shut it behind him. He would show up on security footage - nothing to be done about that at the moment - but he could cover his tracks later, and at least he looked nothing like himself.
He took a breath as he stared down the rows of helms.
Now he could feel their energy, even siphoned off as it was; a light crackling against his skin.
Some trolls had a far keener psiionic sense than he did, able to read the ability and strength of a troll from their psiionic field. He still valued the connection he had, even when all it did was remind him how trapped his fellows were.
Fleet propaganda whispered into the ears of every lowblood that helming a ship was an honor, a special duty to the empire. That every strong psiionic should dream of leading the way through the stars to unconquered worlds.
Jastes hadn’t believed that for sweeps.
Even if he had been young again, an innocent wriggler, the rows of bodies before him lodged in columns would have shriveled any such belief to dust.
Their eyes - about two dozen pairs of them - were all shut. Kept unconscious by a constant drip of serum, as was supposedly kinder. Their limbs - what was left of them, the flesh and bone not yet eroded by the endless drain - wove into the pink biowire attached to the floor and ceiling seamlessly, as if their bodies and the biotech drinking their energy were all of one being.
The mechanic set his jaw. At least it wasn’t as bad as other setups he’d seen. The room was quiet, clean as the rest of the factory, and the columns themselves seemed well maintained. There was no smell of burnt or rotting flesh, only the faint scent of disinfectant and the slight salty tang of the pink, synthetic wire tissue. No erratic sparking or cries of pain, signs of helms being pushed past their limits.
Not that the silence was any more comforting.
One wall was entirely devoted to a screen full of readouts, numbers and diagrams flickering and updating with every new second of data. He walked over to it, but looked back at the trolls in their uniform, dull gray bodysuits, some with their horns and hair shaved down to better make way for their connection ports.
Jastes knew he couldn’t take them with him, helpless as they’d be even if he could free them. There were too many, and he was only here to gather information; his backup was off-site, unable to help him handle anyone else.
He still hated having to leave his fellow lowbloods behind.
He couldn’t even ease their pain, because it would be picked up on the big, obnoxious readout screen monitoring every last variable about them. The lowblood forced himself to focus; though it hadn’t been a full minute since he’d walked in, it was still sloppy by his standards.
He’d checked the schedule and no maintenance was scheduled for tonight, but that didn’t mean he was safe. Someone watching the security feed might notice the helm room was occupied by an unknown troll at any moment, and then he’d have to trigger his escape plan.
If only he’d had time to set up a loop to feed them, but the window of opportunity had been narrow enough that there wasn’t any. A severe breach into the system would also draw more attention than he’d like; 3D printers were one thing, that stunt could draw policeradicators down on him.
The resistance leader scanned the data with a critical eye, searching for…aha.
Usage levels really were down across the board - not just one or two trolls, all of them. Latrai did want to ease off helm power, here was proof she actually meant to back up her fine talk. No wonder that cerulean had been grumbling.
He recorded it with a glance, saving the files for later. Now if he could just -
The screen crackled and suddenly was not filled with numbers and graphs, but the freckled face of a troll, two-tone blue eyes staring into him with a moment’s surprise before a wicked grin overtook it.
“I wondered what that ping was…hello, little intruder, and who might you be? I’m sure you know who I am.”
Jastes was busy trying to cut the signal, but something was blocking him - it must be an AI, or a technopath. Either could bar his tech until he figured out a workaround, which he did not have time for.
“It’s rude to ignore someone, you know.” The highblood said conversationally. “I’ve already locked the door and removed you from the security feed, so it’s just you and me in here. No one else is coming to investigate. Might as well get cozy.”
Jastes thought rapidly, brain matter and processing augments working in tandem.
He put his hand to the screen’s control panel, prompting a slightly confused squawk from the other man, and carefully pried the cover open with a grunt, connecting the tech in his fingers to the wires within.
As he touched the correct cable, a psiionic-carrying virus slipped through it to the blueblood’s own broadcasting equipment, wherever he was. The screen crackled again and went dark, the man cut off mid-rant. Jastes quickly replaced the cover.
He turned and strode toward the room’s entrance, sending a message via his communication implant to his ride.
Only to stop in his tracks as the handle of the door wouldn’t turn.
The highblood hadn’t lied.
