Writing Rant for Transformers...
The Autobots are following Noah Diaz into Area 51 with Optimus Prime next to him...
Optimus Prime: You realize that we are taking a great risk trusting you to introduce us to the G.I Joes Noah.
Noah Diaz: *Staring forwards with a calm yet understandingly concerned grin* Yeah, I get it. Just think of it like when you first met the Maximals. We both entered their territory, but these guys are inviting us to their base.
Optimus Prime: *Looking into the mirror at Bumblebee* Bumblebee, make sure you evacuate the rest of us to safety if I have to intervene.
Bumblebee: [[You got it dude!]]
A door hidden as a boulder opens up from the Earth, lead into an underground tunnel lit by spotlights.
Noah: *Now with a straight face* Aight guys... *Looks at Acree on his left before looking forwards again* And Gal. We're here.
The Autobots line up before transforming into their bot modes to stand before Agent Burke.
Agent Burke: *Holding out his hands as if to shake Optimus' hand* Welcomed guys to the base of Nest.
Noah: *Confused and squinting at Burke* Hol' Up! You gave me a slip for G I Joe, what the hell is Nest?
Burke: *Nods in agreement while holding his hands out to Noah* I know, I know. *slips his hands into his pockets while looking directly at him* I had to hide Nest from the public eyes so that everyone doesn't panic.
Noah: *Opening his eyes widely at Burke in a mocking expression* And yet my brother got to speak to Mirage before I left to save the world.
Mirage: *Attempts to raise his hand before Bumblebee pulls it back down.*
Bumblebee: *Shakes his head to let Mirage know that now is not the time to speak yet.*
Burke: *Now looking to his left* Smart kid. The girls would love to meet him.
Noah: *Folding his arms* Nah. He's not waiting for a play date with your daughter my guy. He's waiting for me to come home with his favorite Autobot.
Mirage: *Crowing his eyebrows while walking up to and pointing at Noah* Oh no, we ain't friends. *His hands are now at his sides before pointing back* That guy ruined my paintjob before we left for Peru.
Bumblebee: [[Whistling Steamboat Willie]]
Mirage: *Looks back at Bumblebee* When did you meet him?
Bumblebee: *Playing Space Jam from his radio while holding his hands behind his back*
Mirage: Yo Optimus! I thought you banned him from the movies.
Optimus: *Looks back at Bumblebee before walking up with a hidden guilty smirk* Bumblebee got me invested in basketball.
Mirage: *Pointing at Bumblebee* You better be glad Optimus likes basketball Bee.
Bumblebee: *Looks up at Optimus*
Optimus: *Looking down at Bee before looking forwards* No. I only realized that Bee couldn't be left speaking only in one film's script.
Burke: *Walking up to and waving at Optimus Prime* Excuse me, Mr. Optimus Prime. *Lowers his hand back into his side pocket* I believe we're stalling the meeting.
Optimus: *Looking down at Agent Burke* Your meeting can wait a little longer until my Autobot are seated somewhere.
Burke: *Looks down* Oh ho ho, no no. *Looks back up to Optimus with a smirk* Their meeting.
Optimus Prime looks up towards a Chevrolet Caprice Police Car, a green Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396, and a Freightliner FLD120 all decked out in off-road military gear drive up in back of Burke and then transform into Strongarm, Moonracer, and Elita-One. Elita then walks up to a stunned Optimus Prime mischievously grinning at his face.
Elita-One: *Looks down at the Alt-mode Optimus choose and then stares back up at Optimus* You choose little too close to home, don't ya think?
Optimus: *Looking down at Elita with a confused crow and then smirks at her* And you choose to intimate my Alt-mode. *Flip's Elita's new found fedora*
Elita: *Silently chuckles at Optimus' comment before lifting her hands onto his chest*
Bumblebee: *Interups the reunion between Optimus and Elita* [[Curiously Beeps]]
Elita: *Looks down and starts holding Bee's head to take a closer look at his rusted emblem*
What happened to you B-127?
Optimus: *Holds Elita's shoulder* He goes by Bumblebee now. *Looks down at a now curious Elita-One that stares at him with a confused and concerned crow* (coughs into his hand) Bee risked his life to save mine.
Elita: *Now looking at an embarrassed Bumblebee* He owes you Bee. *Holds her left hand to her mouth and looks towards Strongarm* Strongarm!
Stormarm: *Holding her hands behind her back before walking up to Elita* Yes Madame Elita?
Elita: *Gently lifts Bumblebee in front of her and peeks her head to his right* Can you take Bee to Ratchet so he can get cleaned up?
Strongarm: *Delicately holds Bumblebee's right hand* Yes Ma'am. *Looks directly at Bee as she walks him to Ratchet's workshop* Come along, little Bee.
Bumblebee: *Looks Optimus in his eyes with puppy dog eyes in supposed need of an adult as he walks away with Strongarm*
Optimus: *Staring down the hall to the right hallway that Bee & Strongarm walk down*
You bought Ratchet here?
Elita: *Standing next to Optimus and looks up to him with a patient smile* We may have accidentally crashed into Area 51.
Optimus: *Glares down at Elita with a concerned crow* And the humans haven't attempted to experiment on you?
Elita: *Closes her eyes and turns her head forwards* We've been hunting enemy Decepticons with Nest for years, combining our tech together. *Looking away while losing her confident smile* And since Strongarm, Ratchet, Moonracer and I have been using... um... a-aggressive advances w-we been classified as the Wreckers of Nest.
Optimus: *Stares forwards and lifts his left hand onto Elita's left shoulder, pulling her close and causing her to blush* It suits you, Ariel. *He gently squeezes her shoulder*

Chevy Chevelle - Iconic Muscle Car of its Era
Tumblr media
One of the most versatile muscle cars of its era, the Chevy Chevelle first came off the production line in September 1963, introduced at a Chicago press conference. Built on an A-body platform, the Chevelle shared the same underlying frame as the Oldsmobile Cutlass, Pontiac Tempest, and Buick Skylark. Its niche was between the large Impala and compact Chevy II/Nova, and its nearest competitor at launch was the Ford Fairlane. The popular mid-size sold 338,286 units in its first year and remained in production until 1977.
Introduced as a 220-horsepower 283cid, the Chevelle was initially available as a two-door hardtop, the Sports Coupe, or a convertible. A smaller number of four-door sedans and two or four-door station wagon models also made it to showroom floors. One hallmark was that it returned the 115-inch wheelbase of 1955 to 1957 Chevys. This created a smooth ride that backseat passengers appreciated, making it a popular family vehicle. By the end of 1964, the Chevelle was available with a top-line 300 horsepower 327cid engine that solidified it in the performance category.
By 1965, Chevy offered a performance 350hp L79 engine on its Super Sport (SS) trim model. Innovations included vinyl bucket seats with a floor console, a four-gauge cluster, and an optional dash-mounted tachometer that measured revolutions per minute.
In 1965, Chevrolet upped the ante, introducing the Chevy Malibu SS 396 Z16. The Z16 replaced the small-block engine of previous SS models with a big-block V8 engine known as the 396 (or L37). This delivered a full-throated 375 horsepower and is seen by many as the start of the classic muscle car era. The Z16 is also one of the most sought-after models by vintage collectors, as only 201 of the new trim was manufactured in its inaugural year.
The popularity of the higher-performance Super Sport packages on the baseline Chevelle was such that in 1966, Chevrolet made SS its model, which featured a 396 engine and horsepower options between 325 and 375. This more limited version of the first-generation Chevelle, the SS396 series, lasted through 1968.
Spanning 1968 to 1972, the second generation of the Chevelle relegated Super Sport to an engine package again and represented a radical redesign of the vehicle. The 396 cubic inch, 375hp engine remained the top-of-line option. Aesthetically, the taillights were bigger, and the back of the vehicle was shorter and curvier. With a cut wheelbase, the second-generation Chevelle also featured a noticeably longer hood.
The 1970 Chevelle LS6 introduced the iconic twin racing-stripe front hood option, which is familiar from car chase scenes in movies and TV series of the era. Its taillights were bumper-mounted, and with a 450 horsepower 454 block, it had one of the most powerful engines of the era. The highly collected model only lasted a single year: already, United States regulations were on the horizon that would make better mileage vehicles a must, and in 1971, the vehicle returned to a small-block 350 engine.
The mid-1970s oil crisis and further fuel economy regulations stripped the Chevelle line of its power and luster. By 1977, the Chevrolet Chevelle and Malibu series had only 145 horsepower, a far cry from their muscle car heydays. The following year, the Chevelle was folded into the Malibu brand as Chevy streamlined operations.

396 - Citizen Kane
This week we’re talking about maybe the most talked-about film of all time, Citizen Kane. It’s hard to find things that haven’t already been said about this movie, but boy do we try! What would a modern retelling of this movie be like, and why would it be a miniseries instead? What decade of film should we throw in the trash? And has anyone else noticed Charles Foster Kane is kinda similar to a certain political figure we have today?
Also, why we hate car windows. (Recorded December 23rd, 2023.)

translation
rakkaus: love
-
with the tv as background noise you were mindlessly scrolling through your phone, today's plan was just chilling on the living room’s couch. the sound of your boyfriend’s car was heard and he was soon inside the house leaving his stuff near the door.
“hey, seb” you mumbled while he made his way over to you, pressing a quick kiss on your lips.
“hi rakkaus, what are you up to?”
“me? nothing… want to watch a movie?” normally this could have been a date night out but your boyfriend had just come from practice which meant he was surely tired and so were you, so it seemed like the perfect time to spend a lazy day at home.
he walked over the kitchen to pour himself a glass of water.
“you’ll do the popcorn?”
“yeah, you can go change or take a shower while i get everything ready”
sebastian walked to you, leaving another kiss on your cheek then quickly jogged up the stairs. in the meanwhile you prepared the popcorn, brought some pillows and a warm blanket so you could be more comfy. once the movie was selected and everything was ready you plopped down on the couch again waiting for your boyfriend.
“y/n, have you seen my shir-” he rushed downstairs, stopping just in front of you.
“what?”
he pointed at your chest “that’s my shirt” your eyes traveled down to your torso, a smile already forming in your face.
“oh… MY shirt?” placing his arms on each side of his hip, he looked at you with narrow eyes like asking “are you serious?”
“it's not yours” you laughed at how serious he was taking the issue even though you were just messing with him
“i’m proclaiming it as ours. not your nor my shirt. it’s ours”
a sweet smile plastered on his face, those smiles that could melt you on the inside. he ran his hand over his hair then sat down next to you on the couch.
“could you give it to me now?”
and there it was, you laughed again moving closer to him so you could cuddle “no, i’m not giving to you”
“y/n-”
“let’s watch the movie and cuddle, ok?” a loud sigh left his mouth but he started the movie anyway, moving closer to you. soon the movie was long forgotten, and the only thing that mattered was being together sharing a chill but lovely night.

MASTERLIST || TIMESTAMPS MASTERLIST || TIMESTAMPS PLAYLIST
Pairing: general male x gn!reader
Genre: fluff
Warnings: none
Word count: 396
Summary: i tell the stars about you. || based on all my love and happy ending by seventeen
A/N: howdy y'all! so i'm doing this new thing (not really new, the kpop blogs have been on this lmao) where i post very short and generic drabbles that aren't really about anyone in particular. it's my way of still writing when i can't commit to writing anything long. they're also gonna be based off songs <3 please let me know if y'all like these!
hi! if you enjoy my writing, please consider buying me a kofi!
Tumblr media
Soft.
The first word that floats into mind as he slips under the covers, trying not to disturb your sleeping figure. A quiet chuckle laves his lips as he feels you shuffle closer to him as soon as the bed dipped, your arm reaching out for his.
It had been another long night -- meetings that ran too long and an endless pile of paperwork. Another long night of wishing he was with you, anywhere else. On nights like this, the only thing that gets him through is the thought of you waiting for him at home.
He gets in his car, tempted to break every speed limit just to get to you sooner. But instead, he hears your voice reminding him to be safe and he takes his time, knowing you’ll be there waiting for him. He turns on the radio and the silence is broken by a jazzy melody, the kind he wishes he could spin you in his arms to. By now, the roads are mostly empty, and he can take the time to just think.
The stars become an audience for the thoughts that race his mind, most of which revolve around you. He pictures you in the passenger seat, singing along to all the songs, even the ones you don’t know. He remembers the first night it happened, the way it felt like it was straight out of a movie, and the tug in his heart drove him to say “I love you.” But before the panic could set in, your own confession rang in his ears, sounding more melodious to him than the music playing.
He recalls how his life changed after that night. How everything he’s done since then has been to hear you say those three words to him. How all of the hard times, the tears, the struggles, have been manageable because you’re by his side. You are the spring in all his winters, the stars in his sky, his own happy ending… everything.
He can go on and on just thinking about you, but before he even realizes it, he’s home. He’s in bed beside you, his arm wrapped around your waist and your head nuzzled against his chest. He whispers goodnight against the top of your head and he feels that tug again, as if it’s the first time.
“I love you.”

Dragon Ball Z Special: History of Trunks
Tumblr media
The second DBZ special aired on February 24, 1993, right between Episodes 175 and 176.   I was always kind of curious about the timing on this special, because it was included with the Trunks Saga box set back in the day, which led me to believe that it meant to be viewed around that part of the story.   More likely, Funimation did it because the Trunks Saga was really short, and the “box set” would have been two VHS tapes without something else to throw in.
The collected editions of the manga placed it right around the same order as the TV show, right after Mr. Satan insists on fighting first.   However, Kanzenshuu.com lists its original publication date as August 11, 1992,  as part of a double feature alongside Chapter 396, which features Trunks taking on Perfect Cell so Krillin could rescue Vegeta.   That might explain why episode 164 featured a lengthy flashback to Trunks’ boyhood.   Toei had the special to work from, and while they eventually adapted the special outright, they were able to do a filler scene with some confidence in what Trunks’ future word was really like.    That makes a lot of sense, because Trunks vs. Perfect Cell was probably the high water mark for the character, and after that he became much less important in the series.
To be clear, the manga version came first, and the anime version adapted and expanded it.    So unlike the DBZ movies, this one is about as canon as it gets.    It also stands in stark contrast to the first special starring Bardock.    Toriyama had nothing to do with creating “Father of Goku”, but he liked the special so much that he briefly referenced the climactic scene in the manga.
Tumblr media
So yeah, this is basically an account of the future timeline Trunks is from, so it opens with Goku dying of the hear virus Trunks predicted in Episode 122.
Tumblr media
I know that feel, kid.
Tumblr media
Then we flash forward about six months to May 12, Age 767, when the androids attacked.    They kill all the Z-Fighters, and then we flash forward again about thirteen years.    Things look pretty much the same, but only because this just happens to be one of the towns the androids haven’t attacked yet.   Also, this one kid has a baloon with Goku on it, which seems really out of place when he’s been dead for so long.
Tumblr media
So the Androids attack... I think it’s Peppertown, and we then find Master Roshi’s house is abandoned.    Turns out he took cover in a submarine, along with Oolong, Puar, and Turtle.    Apparently, this is just what they do when they hear of an android attack on the radio.   I assume that means Peppertown is close enough to Kame House to warrant this sort of thing, but then again, they may just be really jumpy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Peppertown, 18 helps herself to a clothing store, and that’s a pretty cool sequence.    The shopkeep is terrified, of course.
Tumblr media
Then 17 blows up the store as soon as she leaves.   18 chews him out for this, because she wanted to at least spare the clothes.    17 had agreed to this, but forgot.
And that’s kind of the theme of the androids’ reign of terror.    A lot of the early material surrounding Trunks’ future world made it sound more like the post-apocalyptic world of the Terminator movies.    In Episode 139, Trunks even flashes back to a group of humans, many of whom are wearing outfits and swords like his, which imply that they’re all part of some human resistance movement.    That wasn’t hard to go along with, especially since we had just finished the Frieza Saga, where the main villain was more about oppressing people than killing them outright.   But once we finally met 17 and 18, it turns out that they’re not terribly motivated by anything.     They kill people indiscriminately, but they’re in no great hurry to get it done.   This explains how they can be strong enough to kill a Super Saiyan, and yet there’s still a world left thirteen years on.
As a consequence, Trunks’ world doesn’t look like a hellish post-apocalyptic nightmare.     At least not all of it does.    Peppertown looked pretty much business-as-usual, until the androids finally got around to destroying it.   It’s not a quick, sudden thing that happened.   The world is slowly being torn down, city by city, person by person, and that’s actually scarier when you think about it.
Tumblr media
For example, Bulma and Trunks hear about the attack on Peppertown while they’re returning from a grocery run, but they have to drive a long way for groceries because so many cities have been ruined.   So there’s still food and cars and fuel for cars and such, but things are a lot harder to access.    I assume the world population has had to become more decentralized, since any major population center risks getting targeted by the androids.
Anyway, Trunks has had it with the androids, so he asks his mom if she doesn’t mind heading home alone, and she knows what he’s up to, but she can’t really stop him from leaving either.
Tumblr media
But when Trunks reaches Peppertown, it’s too late.    The androids are gone, and so are all the people he wanted to save.
Tumblr media
But he does run into Gohan there, and so the two of them head back to the Capsule Corp. building, or what’s left of it.     There, Trunks pleads with Gohan to take him on as his student, and teach him how to kick some android ass.   Gohan agrees, since Trunks reminds him a lot of himself as a boy.   But they agree to keep his training a secret from Bulma so she won’t worry.
Tumblr media
This is one of the commerical bumpers they used in this special.    I’m putting it here because I want to point out that this is maybe the only time I’ve ever seen them actually color in that bit of purple hair sticking out of baby Trunks’ hat.   usually hey just leave it the same color as his face.   He looks a lot cuter this way.
Tumblr media
Gohan has dinner with Trunks and Bulma, and it’s weird to see Bulma cooking, but in this world, she probably had no choice.    It looks like her house took a pounding from an Android attack, but it’s mostly in tact.    My guess is that West City is mostly deserted, and Bulma stayed here because she needs the lab and other equipment, and she figured a deserted city would be safer than a full one.
Tumblr media
Later, Gohan starts training Trunks.   He’s strong and he has loads of potential, but he won’t really be in any shape to fight the androids until he can turn into a Super Saiyan like Gohan can.    Gohan keeps telling him that anger is the key, but Trunks just can’t quite pull it off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ox King and Chi-Chi are still alive in this timeline, although they both look pretty haggard.   From what I can tell, they never see much of Gohan anymore, and so all Ox King has for her are stories he’s heard of Gohan fighting the androids in various places.    She longs for the days when Goku was still alive and Gohan had a chance of becoming a great scholar, but that future was taken away from Gohan when he was left as the only one strong enough to fight the androids.
Tumblr media
Then we pick up at some later time, in another city.   Things look pretty peaceful here, and they even have an amusement park.   One of the people in this shot says it’s because this is one of the few cities that has any sort of military, so they think that’s kept the androids away all these years.
Tumblr media
Only it wasn’t.   17 and 18 are here right now.   They just never got around to this city yet.   How is 18 doing that with her arm?   Well, she is a cyborg...
Tumblr media
Someone calls the military for assistance, but we see that there’s no one to answer, because 17 and 18 already took them out before they got to the park.
Tumblr media
Soon, Gohan and Trunks show up, and we see Gohan turn Super Saiyan for the first time in the special.    Not sure why he does that jazz hands thing, but whatever.    A lot of what he’s been doing lately has probably been self-taught.
Tumblr media
Now, we first saw 17 and 18 fight in Episodes 135 and 136.  There, they took out Vegeta and Trunks--both as Super Saiyans--with tremendous ease.   Afterward, Trunks mentioned that they were far more powerful than the 17 and 18 in his own timeline.    He was at least able to fight them there, and the main problem was the numbers game, and the androids’ superior stamina.   They never get tired, while Super Saiyans burn through their energy pretty quickly.
This fight pretty neatly illustrates the problem.   Gohan does pretty well while he’s fighting 17 alone, but then 18 jumps in and saves 17 before he can come close to finishing him off.   If Gohan could just get one of them isolated for a while, maybe he could divide and conquer, but that just never happens.    If he had a partner, then that guy could keep 18 busy while Gohan takes out 17, and then they could double team 18 and be done with it.
Tumblr media
And Trunks does pretty well in that respect, considering he’s only 14 and not even a Super Saiyan.   He’s no match for 18, but he does get in a few hits, which is more than he managed when he was older and more powerful and tried to fight 18 in the altered timeline.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, things go really badly for the boys, because Trunks gets overwhelmed and Gohan ends up having to fight both androids and save Trunks at the same time.   He tries to hide, much like we saw him do in the flashback from Episode 164, only this time it dosn’t do him any good.    The one advantage he has on the androids is that they can’t sense his ki, but that doesn’t matter here, because 18 just fires a big energy blast that happens to be right next to him.     There’s no escape.
Tumblr media
The only thing that saves them is that 17 and 18 can’t find them in the rubble, so they give up and go “home”.   I wonder what their home looks like.    Gohan digs himself out and one of his arms is gone.   He pulls out his bag of senzu beans and finds that he only has one left.    And this is truly the last senzu bean ever.   Apparently the plant that they grow from died off.   I don’t know if 17 and 18 attacked Korin’s tower or what.
I’m also not sure if eating the bean would grow back Gohan’s missing arm.    I guess Yamcha’s injuries at the hands of Dr. Gero were at least as severe, but somehow growing back a limb seems much more extreme to me.    Regardless, he gives the bean to Trunks, because that’s the kind of guy Gohan is.    I like the dub version of this, because Gohan just stares at the bean and asks himself “What would your father do?”   and then he gives it to Trunks.
Tumblr media
Trunks eventually gets Gohan home and they have a doctor tend to his wounds, and before long Gohan’s back in action, minus an arm.    This is about where the manga verson starts, so everything you’ve seen up to now has been filler.
I get the impression that this scene is right after Gohan recovered, and they haven’t fought the androids since he lost his arm.    Trunks still can’t turn Super Saiyan, and Gohan reminisces about how he did it when he thought about Piccolo and the others dying to the androids.
I get the sense that Future Gohan has some serious flaws as a warrior.    No disrespect intended, I just mean that his game plan seems to be largely improvised.    Ox King mentioned hat he seems to be determined to “avenge” the Z-Fighters, which makes sense, except that he probably needs to be more focused on protecting humanity, or figuring out a way to defeat the androids.    From what I’ve seen of him, it looks like he’s more interested in just fighting them.  He shows up, they mix it up a little, he gets in over his head, and then he has to hide until they get bored and leave.   If that’s his standard operating procedure, then I doubt he’s ever actually driven off 17 and 18.   Why would they stop attacking a city after he’s out of sight?
I’m not saying that Gohan doesn’t care about the people, but it seems like his strategy is just “Hit the androids until they explode,” and that hasn’t gotten him anywhere.    If Vegeta were still alive, then they might have enough firepower to make that plan work.    If Piccolo were around, then he’d probably make Gohan understand that he needs to think outside the box on this.    But Gohan’s not a tactician or a fighting genius.   He’s very talented, but on his own, his shortcomings become very apparent.
Tumblr media
Anyway, while they talk, the androids start attacking West City.   Trunks wants to help, but Gohan insists that he stay behind.    Trunks hates that idea, especially since Gohan’s lost an arm already.   So Gohan agrees to let him come along.... only to knock him out cold while he’s not looking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this leads us to Gohan’s Last Stand.    He actually does pretty well fighting both 17 and 18 at the same time, with only one arm at that.    But it doesn’t take them long to turn the tables on him.   My guess is that Gohan pushed himself too hard and wore himself out faster than usual.   Also, as I recall from the manga, 17 told him that he hadn’t been figthing at full strength until now, so he may have underestimated them.
But Gohan warns them: Even if his body is destroyed, what he represents will live on, and someone else will rise up to carry out his last wish.    Z Stands for the end, but not yet.
Tumblr media
Later, Trunks wakes up, and find him in the city, lying face down in a puddle.
Tumblr media
And the pain and grief and rage well up inside him, and finally, Trunks realizes what it takes to be a Super Saiyan.    It wasn’t just anger, as Gohan told him.  It was a kind of anger that he couldn’t truly understand until now, because as bad as this future world is, it’s the only one Trunks knows, and as long as he had his mom and Gohan, he’d never really lost anything before now.    But Gohan was his best friend and martial arts master, and his hero.     He was the best, and the androids killed him and threw him away like so much trash.
To be honest, I’m a little choked up on this screening, because I’ve been watching all of DBZ up to this point.   The audience has watched Gohan grow up.    We’ve seen him as a baby, we’ve seen him make friends and do very brave things, and this is how it ends.   A couple of shithead androids kill him like he doesn’t even matter.  Well he did matter, and Trunks has the yellow aura to prove it.
And this is what’s so grim about Trunks’ world.   The Dragon Balls are long gone, senzu beans are extinct, and the last Z-Fighter just died a lonely death.   Yeah, Trunks has become the Legendary Super Saiyan, but so what?   By the time he’s pulled it off, it’s too late to do any good.    It won’t bring Gohan back, or save all the people who died.    This is a very bitter moment for Trunks.     Goku and Vegeta might have found their Super Saiyan awakenings to be cathartic, but not Trunks.
Tumblr media
Three years later, Trunks has been helping Bulma work on her latest invention, the time machine.   Her plan is to send Trunks back twenty years into the past to see if Goku could have stopped the androids if he had survived his illness.    But by this point, her lab has been destroyed, so it’s taken a long time for her to charge the time machine for a round trip.    As for Trunks, he thinks they won’t need the time machine, because he thinks he’s finally strong enough to beat the androids by himself.    Bulma hates that idea, since that’s exactly how Gohan got himself killed.
Tumblr media
But when Trunks hears of an android attack on the radio, there’s not much Bulma can do to stop him from going.    He straps on his sword and flies out to wreck their shit.
Tumblr media
At first he seems to do pretty well...
Tumblr media
But his attacks don’t hurt them at all.   As Trunks eventually realizes, it’s not that his attacks aren’t strong enough, it’s that they’re just fast enough to dodge a split second before they connect.
Tumblr media
And then he realizes his mother was right.    He’s in over his head, and the androids won’t just let him walk away from this.    He’s gotten sucked into the same routine Gohan was in for over a decade.
Also, look how much he resembles Vegeta from his battle with Frieza, right around the time he realized the same thing about Frieza.
Tumblr media
So the androids toy with him and chase him around for a while as he tries to escape.   Not sure why he turned off Super Saiyan during this...
Tumblr media
But then they toss him out of a building and he’s back in Super mode again.    Are those flower petals supposed to be like cherry blossoms?   Did Trunks finally go through puberty?
Tumblr media
They keep picking on him, mainly because he’s too stubborn to lay down, and when he asks them why they do this, they say it’s because they hate humans, and so they’ve decided to kill everyone they find.
Tumblr media
Eventually, they blast him and leave without making sure he’s dead, and then Trunks wakes up a few days later to discover that his mom found him and got him medical attention.    At long last, Trunks is finally on board with using the time machine.
Tumblr media
And so Trunks recovers, and he prepares for his fateful journey.    Bulma assures him that Goku will be able to help, not just because he was strong, but because he had a way of making you feel like everything would turn out okay.    Oh, and Vegeta... certainly... uh, was alive back then.   Yeah.
And that’s it.   The credits show clips of Trunks debut in Episodes 120-122, and now you know..... the rest.... of the story.   Paul Harvey...... good day?
In the past, I never had much use for this special, because most of what happens in it is stuff we already knew about from Trunks’ description of his past.    Also, for a few years I struggled to accept DBZ stories that went backwards on the power scale like this.   Future Trunks and Future Gohan and their android enemies are much weaker than Cell or the Saiyans in the Cell Games Saga, so what’s the point?
Also, I went through a period where I didn’t have much use for Trunks as a character, maybe because he didn’t seem to matter much after he beat Mecha-Frieza and lost to Cell.    He just seemed to whine a lot and never had much to contribute, unlike Gohan and the others.
But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to appreciate Trunks’ story more.    He has a mission, and things to prove, and loved ones to protect and avenge, and he just wants to get through this thing in one piece, you know?    He’s not big on foolish heroics because he’s seen bad things happen to people who do.    Sometimes his cautious, calculated approach to things doesn’t work either, but you can’t blame him for having that attitude.    In his world, you’re working without a net.

Weekend Top Ten #396
Top Ten Moments in the Dark Knight Trilogy
So this year is Batman’s 80th birthday. Happy birthday Bruce! You look great.
Anyway, what with that, and the fact that a few weeks ago was “Batman Day” (I missed it coz I was talking about The West Wing), and the fact that the uber-controversial Joker comes out round about now, I thought I'd finally do due diligence to the World’s Greatest Detective and give him a bit of a celebratory Top Ten.
But what to talk about? I've talked about Batman a few times now. Honestly, when you get to nearly 400 of these bloody lists, it starts to get really hard to find new angles on your favourite things! Well, I decided that one thing I hadn't really talked about all that much is what remains, in all probability, the best live-action depiction of Batman and his world: Christopher Nolan’s epic Dark Knight trilogy.
Nolan's Batman isn't my favourite Batman. Purely from a performance level I think I prefer Keaton, even if Tim Burton’s vision is miles away from my own. I even, honestly, prefer watching Adam West. That's not to say I don't love Christian Bale, scary voice and all, or Nolan's attempt to provide emotional context for Batting Up. His earthy, realistic depiction of Gotham is iconic and masterful, even if I tend to dismay at the rejection of some of the goofier aspects of Batdom. Personally, I think if you strip Batman of some of his wilder eccentricities – the sci-fi villains, the fatalistic, mythological overtones, the air of Gothic supernaturalism – he actually ends up looking sillier, less realistic. Pretty much everyone in Nolan's Gotham is straight from a normal crime movie, except this one weirdo in body armour and a cape. To be fair, Batman Begins does a very good job of explaining why those things are necessary, but despite the chaos of The Dark Knight, I don't think Nolan does enough to reinforce why Batman remains necessary.
What I'm saying is the films would have been better if Bat-Mite was in them.
Despite all that, I adore these films. I go back and forth over whether I prefer Dark Knight or Dark Knight Rises; the latter film has big logic flaws and smaller structural ones, but I think the first sequel suffers most from the disconnect between “realistic crime drama” and “crazy superhero smackdown”. But they’re great. Few superhero films soar to their heights of have as much to say.
So, here we go. My favourite moments from the Dark Knight trilogy. Enjoy.
Tumblr media
“I'm going to make this pencil disappear” (The Dark Knight, 2008): we've already met the Joker, but his introduction to Gotham's gangland – theatrical, crazy, terrifying, murderous – cements him as something utterly new. We'd never seen anything like this before, and neither had Gotham. Perfect combo of fear and funny; love that Joker.
“Some men just want to watch the world burn” (TDK): Michael Cain’s Alfred is one of the highlights, his droll delivery offsetting some of the darkness. But his depiction of chaos and evil is both flinty advice and a cool tag-line.
“Is it the scars? You wanna know how I got ‘em?” (TDK): like the best Jokers, this one has a past that's multiple choice. His changing story deepens his freaky, nightmarish persona as well as the film’s themes of chaos. Plus the moment he breaks up Bruce's party is pretty flipping great.
“You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it” (The Dark Knight Rises, 2012): Nolan does a great job making Batman a scary presence. So by the time he fights Bane in Rises, it’s a shock to see him so well-lit; he looks small and pathetic against the man-mountain of a villain. It’s a brutal, well-shot fight, no-nonsense, spartan. It’s a shocking and scary moment.
“What s that, a bazooka?!” (TDK): the Knight car chase is a masterpiece. Its escalation, its choreography, its use of colour and sound; the moment the Joker hangs his head out the window; the bit where the Batpod sort of drives up a wall to turn around… and, of course, the reveal of the ‘pod itself, emerging from the ruins of the Batmobile. Wonderful toys indeed.
“You're not the devil. You're practice” (Batman Begins, 2005): the first Nolan Bat-flick (as opposed to a Batfleck) is fantastic in establishing the jigsaw puzzle of how Bruce Wayne built the Batman. But the very first real moment of this, when he’s clearly gotten himself arrested in some far-eastern gulag just to pick a fight with the biggest, baddest bastard in the place, is delightful.
“Oh, you wouldn't be interested in that...” (BB): Morgan Freeman’s Lucius Fox is a big part of the Nolan films, and his banter with Bruce is just a joy to behold. The sequence in Begins where Batman builds his arsenal is great, full of great comic beats, culminating in Bruce discovering the Tumbler. “Does it come in black?” is also a cool trailer line.
“Swear to me!” (BB): Bale’s Batman often comes in for a bit of stick for his gravelly voice, and fair enough. But deployed correctly it can be very effective. We really see the creepy, nasty, scary version of Batman as he terrorises a criminal. “Swear to me!” of course comes after the crim in question says “swear to God”, Bats assuming his place in the celestial pecking order.
“Perhaps he’s wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane?” (TDKR): the Joker’s opening heist in Knight might be cleverer, but Bane’s midair abduction and murder is a technical tour-de-force, filmed (partly) for real in the middle of the frickin’ sky. We first glimpse Bane and his sinister, terrifying presence, as well as hear his iconic and slightly camp voice. “Eet wud be echstreemly painful… fo yoow!”
“Pretty generous, for a thief” (TDKR): Rises is often criticised for being sillier than the others (despite Begins literally ending with Batman chasing a microwave machine that boils water). And, yes, it is a bit camper and goofier than Knight, although I’d argue its less-defined plot carries no more holes than its predecessor films. Bruce Wayne miraculously making his way from the Middle East to Gotham, penniless, helpless, alone, with no equipment, despite Gotham being cut off and isolated, ringed with explosives; this is a bridge too far for some. For me, it’s the most Batman-y moment in all three films. How did he do that, you cry; because he’s Batman, I reply.
No time for another of my favourite moments, which - I'll be honest – suffered because I was looking for quotes. It's the very, very end of Rises, when Joseph Gordon-Levitt find the Batcave, and the elevator rises up, lifting him out of frame; literally the new Dark Knight rising. And who could forget the hospital explosion, or the money inferno, or the interrogation, all from Knight? Basically any moment with Heath Ledger. Also I like the gag about being at a party and people starting to pass around weaponised hallucinogens from Begins. And when Selina Kyle cons the cops, switching from savvy criminal to screaming girl to cool citizen. It's a good trilogy, you should check it out.

A Second Decade of Movies
Ten years ago on Facebook, I compiled a list of every movie I watched, in order, from the first decade of the network’s existence. Now, here’s part two, covering the years 2010-2019. There are 754 titles below, though some are repeat viewings. The movie I watched the most? Harold Lloyd in “The Freshman.” My favorite movie from the last decade? “The Tree of Life.”
But I began the 2010s with James Cameron’s mega-hit “Avatar.” I’ll go on record saying the movie is still enjoyable ten years later, as I watched it again in 2019 with my kids to prep for visiting the World of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But--I also agree with those who say there’s little remembered from the film in the culture today. Can you name the stars? Recount the plot in detail? Mostly what we remember from the film is the spectacle of it all, game-changing when it was released in 2009.
