Narnia 30 Day Challenge #4

Day 4: Least favorite female character and why?

In 2016 I went with the Lady of the Green Kirtle, and I kinda stand by that, in a sense that she's the kind od woman I'd never want to have anything to do with. She's still a very formidable villain and I love that for the story. She's the embodiment of every toxic female trait - the kind that puts down everyone and doesn't care who she uses to get her way. She uses deciet and lies and gaslighting to subjugate others, grabbing that ultimate control so she can perpetullay live her selfish fantasy that it's all about her. Just to highlight that, Lewis contrasts her with Ramandu's daughter, the gentle, kindhearted Queen. Did the witch murder her because she saw her as competition? To prove she's the toughest badass and her world holds no place for a soft, gentle Lady? Was it spite? Could she not stand anyone as beautiful to coexist?

All those are traits of the most horrid, petty women all of us have came across in some form. Though presenting themsleves as beautiful, clever, sophisticated, they're really spiteful vipers who cannot fathom kindness. And that's my least favorite type of girls. They make the rest of us look awful.

Narnia 30 Day Challenge #3

Day 3: Is there any part of the film adaptations that have made you angry because they've ignored important parts of the book?

Back in my 2016 post I wrote that no, not really. Now I take that back.

You know that scene in VDT the book, after the Narnians save lord Rhoop from the Dark Island and can't get out of the darkness and Lucy begs Aslan for help and the Albatross made of light flies in and around the mast and whispers to Lucy, "Courage, dear heart,". Yeah, along with some other scenes in VDT this one was just badly done by the 2010 adaptations. Like there's this mess and they fight this sea snake that if they beat it, they beat the darkness or something and this albatross shows up but doesn't say The Line(TM) and it just makes zero sense. This really grinds my gear because it's such a poignant moment in the book that I don't know why they just did it halfway and even that half wasn't half decent. Strike 1, Michael Apted!

The other is how the really fun chapters in VDT about the revelation of who the man that bought Caspian from the slavers is and how they then plan a sneaky coup with minimal armed resistance, were booted out from the film. In the book, it's some really cool secret mission stuff and how a specific type of petty paperpusher mini dictators are satisfyingly dealt with. And what have we been given instead? A subpar, generic, not even really believable fight scene that features Caspian utter a line in a way that it gave me serious second hand embarrasment for Ben. Strike 2, Michael Apted.

And I really needed Dragon Island feature how the crew had to pull themsleves together after the tempest. In the film, it's not only unneccesarily mashed with Deadwater Island, the King and his companions abandon, and I really must repeat that - abandon! the ship's crew to look for clues. Why forage for food or help with repairs, when there's a Scooby Doo Mystery that really suffers no delays? Also have you never been to a vulcanic region? You know, depending on climate, but the soil is generally very fertile and mostly offers a rich ecosystem with various edible vegetation. The film gave what I'd expect from a YA romantasy author, but not the 2010 sequel to two superb movies that I hold very dear. Strike 3, Michael! You're out!

Day 15 (30 Days | Homestuck - Day 1) - Favourite Human (John Egbert/Jake English)

I had hoped to colour this, but there's no way I'll be able to keep up the energy for 30 days if I colour each and every one of them, so I'll settle for "colourable" for the days I do have it.

It's always funny the ways a piece will shift and change, not turning out how you originally intended yet still fitting your image of it. I had intended for John's hand to be more of a wave and Jake's to be more of a finger gun, but the relaxed pose still worked out well (and the hands somehow look semi-decent either way).

I originally had to pick one character to fit the prompt, but I had been drawing Jake a lot recently. I still wanted to draw him since he is my favourite, but John is both a close second and was once previously my first favourite. Not all the prompts are going to be two characters, but a bunch of them are, so it's not so terrible to do two at once.

I didn't really have much energy to draw two characters, but I realised I could do something I hadn't done in a while: Draw in symmetry, and change necessary details to make them distinct. It actually worked out really well here, with both not having to change many details while still making them feel like themselves.

One weakness I'm really noticing right now are jaw angles. Jaws shouldn't be so hard to draw since it's a pretty stable shape, but it seems trying to morph the 3D shape so it looks like an actual jaw often creates malformed faces, and that's not exactly my intent (I may have to explore drawing not-average head shapes at some point)

I suppose another fun point, to wrap it up, is the pose. Without quite realising it, I've managed to draw this pose again, but the angling is different enough that I didn't realise it until looking again for this post. It's most certainly my favourite drawing of it too. I still gotta learn how to make the belly look more natural though~
