It's World Idli Day today and how can we not celebrate it by talking about our beloved breakfast dish (while we're eating it too)? We really don't think there's anyone who doesn't know what it is, but for the uninitiated, idli is a soft and fluffy savoury rice cake made with a batter of rice and fermented lentils. It is one of the more healthier and satisfying breakfasts known to us. Team a couple of idlies with a colourful palette of chutneys like garlic, green chilli, coconut, tomato and coriander along with a bowlful of steaming hot sambar. There are variations of idli like rava idli which is made with semolina, sanna which is the bigger and fluffier cousin of the idli from the Konkan region, moodey which is a more coarse and dense idli made in screw pine leaf moulds in Mangalore, also from the region comes kottige which is formed in a mould made with jackfruit leaves. How awesome is that? Such diversity with this one dish. Wherever the idli might have originated from, it now belongs to everyone. On this day, let's look at some of the places in your city that serve some of the best idli and its variations.

Delhi NCR You know where to get your classic idli sambar plate. But have you tried mini idlis yet? They're idli, only cuter because of their size. And you can get a plate (or bowl) of these little idlies at Flavours of Chennai in Malviya Nagar. Little nuggets of 14 idlies doused in sambar or chutney is how these should be devoured for maximum flavour. If this doesn't whet your appetite, how about fried idlies then? That should do it. In Noida there's Laksmi Coffee House. They have a small section of idlies in your menu - regular idli with sambar and chutney, mini idli and idiyappam which is basically rice noodle cakes (that's the best we could do!). There's extra milagai powder (the infamous spicy red powder to be generously sprinkled on the idlies along with ghee) if you're up for it. In Lodhi Colony, Delhi, there's this small and unassuming place called Chidambaram's New Madras Hotel. For a spicier take on breakfast, try their masala idli. They also have the other variety of idlies fried idli, curd idli, chilli idli and veg idli among others. For a new flavour combination head to Bernado's in Gurgaon. Get some vindaloo and some sanna. Sanna works like a sponge, soaking up all the tangy and spicy vindaloo curry. It's hearty and absolutely delicious. It's fun to try something new, isn't it?

Mumbai This city is cultural hub with food at its centre. People from the south moved to the big city of Mumbai in the hopes of a better life. And with them they brought their food which grew multifold in the city and today is loved by all. We're talking about the idli and its variations, of course. You'll find them in every vegetarian Udupi restaurant. You must've already been to Hotel Ramashray in Matunga East, but have you tried their kadi idli (yes, you read that right)? It's quite the fusion breakfast dish that's a must try. They also have rasam idli and butter idli. Choose wisely, meaning, choose all. For something special, head to Dakshinayan in Juhu. They've got Kancheepuram idli which is idli topped with vegetables and pepper, nei idli which is idli soaked in the goodness of ghee, molagapodi idli which is mini idlies in the infamous gun powder and then the ambassador idli which is again mini idlies dunked in sambar, onion, coconut and coriander. Who would've thought they'd serve idli at a pub? Enter, SamBar Pub & Kitchen. Alright, there's only one idli dish here which is idli smothered in Chettinad spices. That with some beer and you're evening is made. For your straightforward no nonsense kind of good old fashioned and best idli, there's Ayyappan Idli Store. They also do have masala idli, Mysore idli and wait for it... schezwan idli!

Bangalore Can't begin Bangalore's list without Brahmin's Coffee Bar in Basavanagudi. The softest idlies in a pool of thin chutney with a glass of piping hot filter coffee and you know life's good. There's no other kind of idli here and the other dishes on the menu are vada, kesari bath and khara bath. But absolutely worth the trip you'd make from anywhere to this place. This one's for the bikers and long drive lovers - Kamat Lokaruchi on Mysore Road. A long drive on a early Saturday morning is totally worth it to get yourself some delicious breakfast here. Remember we talked about moodey? They serve that here with chutney. Unwrap the screw pine leaf and tuck into some warm and soft idli away from the hustle and bustle of the city. They also have thatte idli which is a staple on the highways and the perfect time to stop and snack. Thatte idli is idli, only bigger and flatter in shape. With generous lashings of chutney you have a winner. We can't not mention Taaza Thindi in Jayanagar. Many reviews claim that they make the best idlies in town. Their chutney is also very popular. Good enough reason to try some, no? If you're in JP Nagar, try S N Refreshments for their idlies almost drowning in their delicious thin green chutney. Some filter coffee along with it and some fresh air (since they have no seating), you have a great evening right there.

Chennai Prems Graama Bhojanam started by N S Krishnamoorthi with over 3 decades of experience working with food companies. Prems boasts of no sugar, no maida and no white rice in their food. That's perfect when you're looking for healthier options to indulge in. Idli here is made with kodo millet and not white rice. It's still fluffy and soft. Their dosas are also very popular and so are their chutney and sambar. Andhikkadai in Velachary has a variety of breakfast foods but their idli list is particularly delicious - mini idli, fried idli, chilli idli and ghee fried idli. Can't wait now, can you? And then are some restaurants that go beyond the sambar and chutney for your idli. Like, Kozhi Idli who serve their idlies with chicken curry. Of course, there's idli with chutney or podi too but kozhi kolambu with your idli is not an everyday thing. If you thought you couldn't get thatte idli in Chennai, just go to Kanappa Fast Food in Kilpauk. They call it thattu idli and it is generously topped with podi and dollops of ghee making it super delicious. And then of course there's Mugugan Idli Shop in Besant Nagar. Already loved by everyone, they're a great place to get some delicious and soft idlies with podi and ghee for anyone who's new in the city. There's plenty more places in Chennai to have the humble idli with a variety of chutneys and sambar to your heart's content.

Of course, I also met my friend – railfan Jyothish KD; we had a session of railfanning of almost 1.5 hours. 12170 Solapur Pune Intercity chugged into Platform 2 of Pune behind Pune WDM3D 11176; to continue to Mumbai as my return train – 22106 Indrayani.

We departed at 18 36, a minute late; with the LP sounding a long and slightly shrill HT horn. Barely 4 minutes later, we came to a stop; only to start moving again with a twin-tone (HT horn mixed with a mellow LT horn) after a minute. 11009 Mumbai Pune Sinhagad express crossed us led by a chocolate boy KYN WCAM2-6P. We then slowly crossed over the points and started accelerating with fierce chugging and the classic ALCO transition (at around 40 kmph) just before SVJR. A train hauled by an EMD crossed at Khadki – probably 11019 CSMT-BBS Konark express.

We blasted away from Khadki till Kasarwadi, with the WDM3D turbocharger in full flow and the chief honking all the way 🙂

Meanwhile, the TTE came and asked just my seat number :O . There was a brief slowdown at Akurdi home signal, but we picked up speed through the station and blasted away till Vadgaon home; with rhythmic clickety clack track sounds ringing in my ears. Then we crawled before some hardcore chugging (that’s why I love the WDM3D! 😀 ) and acceleration, only to slow down at Kanhe; as a freight crossed us. The stop-start run continued, as we accelerated with chugging and honking before slowing down at Kamshet home; as an express crossed us behind a WCAMx. Then we had a fast run from Kamshet to Malavli home, racing vehicles on the highway. Entered Lonavla at 19 39 (16 mins late) on PF2. The culprit which had delayed us was waiting on PF3 – Pune Lonavla local; now ready to return to Pune. During our 2-minute halt, many people boarded – most of them unreserved young passengers.

During the climb down the Bhor Ghats, we took the midline. Crossed a train led by WCAMx (probably 11023 CSMT-KOP Sahyadri express) before Monkey Hill. I also had 3 Sabudana Vadas. We overtook a WAG7 hauled freight at Palasdhari yard and crossed a train hauled by an EMD.  Then we overtook a local coming from Khopoli at Palasdhari, and overtook a container train with WDG4D at KJT yard. Pulled into KJT (PF2) at 20 33, 25 mins late. This was where the horror run started. Quite a few people got down. There was a local on the left. After waiting for 9 mins, the LP grew tired and blew the twin-tone horn, followed by three HT toots (two different HT horns – one melodious and the other shrill 😉 ). A minute later, he blew the twin-tone horn and we left once and for all. After slowly clearing the points, the 3D beast chugged away; only to crawl and come to a halt at Bhivpuri home. A train crossed us behind an ALCO, during a stop that lasted as long as 10 minutes.

This was not the end of it all. We had another unscheduled halt at Neral home for 3 mins. I knew then, that something was seriously wrong on the line ahead; this was not the routine delay at work. We were riding yellows throughout – there was a brief fast run from Vangani before slowing down at Badlapur home and another such brief burst of speed from Badlapur to Ambernath home. At Vithalwadi home there was yet another unscheduled halt for 2 mins, before proceeding to stop at the station as well for a minute. Crawled into KYN (PF7) at 22 18, 1 hr 28 mins late. The coach almost emptied here. We had covered a distance of 47 km in 1 hr 35 mins – at an average speed of 30 kmph 😛 . A CR train (I couldn’t read the boards in Hindi properly) towards CSMT departed from PF5. We left at 22 23, after a stop of 5 mins.

For the first time since the run from Pune to Lonavla, the train started behaving as per its superfast status; we had a blasting run till the Parsik tunnel (except for the 50 kmph PSR before Diva) – during which we overtook a train behind an EMD coming from the Panvel-Diva line (a 2 hours late running 10104 MAO-CSMT Mandovi express?) and passed a stationary KR train with ED WDM3D 11318 (probably 50106 Savantwadi Road Diva passenger that had arrived) at Diva. The fast run soon came to a premature end as we stopped for clearance before Thane, during which 12809 CSMT-HWH Mail (Via NGP) crossed us with SRC WAP4 22898. Reached Thane (PF6) at 22 46, 1 hour 37 mins late. After I got down, 12133 CSMT-MAJN superfast chugged into PF5 behind KYN WDM3D 11383. Also, an announcement was made for the arrival of 13202 LTT-RJPB express on PF7.

I then took a crowded local to Vikhroli; whereon I took an auto to reach home by 23 25. Thus ended a rather eventful trip to Pune, which was overall quite satisfying; though the anticipated superfast ride turned out to be more of a fast passenger ride – hence the title of the report 😛 . The next day I found out through IRFCA member Umesh Bendre that this delay of Indrayani was owing to a cascading sequence of events – kickstarted by 11302 SBC-CSMT Udyan express’ loco failure between Shelu and Vangani, due to which 16340 NCJ-CSMT express was stuck for 2 hours at Neral; which in turn delayed 12128 Pune Mumbai Intercity by more than 2 hours – in fact Indrayani ended up entering KYN less than 10 mins after Intercity! :O Just underlines the havoc an engine failure can wreak on a congested route. Hope this report does not deter you from making a trip on the Indrayani! 😛

#771 Mixed emotions of Number 24 and Unforgettable WINTER of 1999 !!!!!

In last year of previous century, drama and emotions was flowing non stop in my life. As I completed engineering in summer of 1999, I took few days to relax as I knew I would hardly get time once I get into a job or pursue further education. I had not decided whether to pursue further studies or get into a job. I tried both. It all started off in end of June 1999.  1999 cricket world cup had just ended and Australia won it. I was shocked that SA messed up in SF. I wanted them to win badly after India went out of contention in super six.

I was studying for GRE exams and in parallel looking for a job. Entrance tests and interviews kept coming and I kept on attending. I didn’t manage to get past first interview in any companies which was disheartening. In parallel, I wrote GRE exam too. I got decent marks in first try. I knew that marks would not be enough to get any scholarship or sponsor but it was good enough to get into a decent college in USA. As luck would have it, my GRE marks got disqualified . Reason being name discrepancy between my name in passport and GRE form. Passport had my name as Sandeep Rao Boloor. In GRE form, there was no space to put in last 2 characters. I called up GRE hotline to ask what should I do. They instructed me to not write last 2 characters. When my marks got rejected, I went to the center to understand the reason behind rejection. They informed me that I should have added 2 boxes and put last 2 characters in those boxes.  The day I got this disqualification letter, I got rejection letter from 3 companies too. Day was 24-Sep-1999.  This day of the month turned out to be special for me which you would get to know later. I was devastated. I didn’t know where to start again. My parents showed concern. Infact, my dad started accompanying me to few interview locations to motivate me. They couldn’t believe that a kid who scored 96.25% in PCM in XII is not able to crack even one interview. By end of September, I had in fact messed up in 16 interviews/entrance tests. It included in big companies too including MNC.  I used to be so upset that I would take long walks just to cheer myself up. I knew I had to overcome this battle on my own.

I had to start from scratch.  We used to live in Chennai those days. Chennai hardly had a few software companies 2 decades back.  I used to travel to aunts place in Bangalore twice a month to submit resume to companies. During one such trip,  I had walked entire electronic city phase 1 to hand over resume hard copies.  It was an experience more than a struggle. I loved that experience. Only worry was that I didn’t know when those experience would start to bear fruits. I had to be patient. I started preparing for GRE again. I got GRE exam date for mid of November in Bangalore. I attended 4 more interviews in October but result was the same. It therefore came to 20 interviews/tests which I couldn’t crack. More than nightmare, it became a joke rather. I hardly could enjoy Deepavali that time which was my favourite festival. I used to wait for Tamil blockbuster movies which used to be released during this period. In trip to Bangalore, I infact went to a movie post failing in one of those interview to cheer myself up. I hardly enjoyed that movie as my mind was somewhere else. I walked out of theatre mid way itself.

In GRE preparation exams, I used to score well. So I was confident that I could get good marks.  I made my Nth trip to Bangalore in mid of November. I had 3 interviews first, then GRE exams and then 4th  interview of the week the day after. I didn’t clear first 3 interviews again. I probably was not in right frame of mind to take GRE which showed. I got disastrous marks. I was devastated. Things were getting from bad to worse.  I just pushed myself for another interview the next day. It was in Palace road behind Vidhana Soudha. Office was still under construction. Interview was held in Atria hotel which was just next to office. There was a written test as usual, followed by 2 interviews. I did decently though I didn’t have focus to analyse if I had done well.  They informed that they would announce results via mail. When I called mom, she asked if I wanted to come to Chennai or travel to Mangalore to attend cousins marriage.   Easy option would be to go to Chennai to avoid facing close relatives who would ask the same question about job in hand which would irritate me no end. Mom told to relax and enjoy a bit. No interview was scheduled for next 2 weeks. So I decided to goto Mangalore. I really had good time in Mangalore attending my cousin Meera’s marriage. We played cards till midnight, chatted with cousins non stop and ate yummy sweets and pakoda till late in the night. Not one of my cousins or relatives asked about my job which was cool. They infact encouraged me that its just matter of time. Mom and dad also came to Mangalore to attend the marriage. We had great fun. We even made a trip to Sultan Battery beach with cousins which is always so much fun.  Mom and Dad returned to Chennai. I had to return a day later as I didn’t get tickets.

Mom and dad reached Chennai at 2 PM and reached home an hour later. Dad called my uncle which I thought was to inform that they have reached safely. It turned to be that I had been selected by Indus Valley software company for which I gave interview just before I came to Mangalore. I had received my first offer letter. In early Jun, I had high hopes of grabbing good package as first offer. With my current situation, I was even ready to work for free for 6 months if it helped. My offer was just Rs 6000 per month. I couldn’t control my smile. I rarely cry but I had tears in my eyes. I reported on 6-Dec-1999 to Indus Valley and my IT career kickstarted from there. Though my career never rose to dizzy heights, I have done enough to make myself and close ones happy. Winter of 1999 taught me one thing and that is not to give up hope. I cleared interview in 24th attempt. Horror memories of 24-Sep-1999 came back in flashback mode !! Transition of horror on 24th to joy on 24th interview was complete. 24 then turned into a lucky number for me and my family. I got married on 24-Dec and in fact, my son was born on 24-Sep. He and my better half have been my sparks of my life and would always be.  Life had taken a full circle. There are moments and there are memories but none better than winter of 1999.  In the same winter, India travelled Australia and got hammered. From what I experienced in last 6 months, I knew that India would come back stronger. Ganguly took over from Sachin a year later and India took a step ahead in terms of performance. He took India to great heights. His aggression of making comeback from difficult situations was what India needed. My life was on track and so was Indian cricket team’s graph.  I enjoyed both the phases with a typical Boloorian smile.

#756 Flashback time.. An unforgettable trip to Arsikere .. :-)

Just as my son’s Dasara holidays have ended and school began, its time to highlight some Dasara holidays which I used to enjoy during my school days. Period 1984-1988. Place Bhadravathi. We used to travel to our native Mangalore during every summer holidays. During dasara holidays, we used to enjoy either in Bhadravathi itself or else travel to Arsikere where my aunt used to live. Arsikere is about 87 kms from Bhadravathi. We used to have early breakfast and take up either mini van or bus to reach Arsikere. It used to take 3 hours those days. Just as we landed in Arsikere, my spirits used to always be on the higher side (Mangalore still ranks at the top though 😉 ).  Bus Depot and Railway station used to be almost close to each other in Arsikere. We had to cross the railway station via a long bridge. On the other side of the station, there was a huge playing ground. Right across the ground was my aunt’s house. Our trip would usually start with an almost lavish lunch. It would start from pulav and end with yummy fruits ice cream salad. I would hog like a … You know what I mean !!!.  

Aunt’s house was a massive railways quarters. Other than a massive house, there was a huge swing on the right hand side in the midst of a beautiful garden, a good enough space to play cricket on the left hand side and a study room at the backend. My cousin had piled up huge lots of Sportstar magazines which I would end reading nonstop. His study room would be filled with Rudd Gullt photos. I used to be fan of Maradona those days. Discussion on who is the best would continue for quite a long time. Don’t ask me who won 😉 I probably got my passion to read sports from this very room.

My cousin Ashwin used to study in a school in Mysore and would also be in Arsikere for Dasara holidays. Mamtha would join as well. It used to be royal fun. Post lunch, chit-chat would happen around the swing which is still so clear in my memory. I might have got more white hairs now but these memories are still intact. Post traditional 4 PM tea, me and Ashwin would play cricket with his huge set of friends. Playing cricket with this gang was real fun. It was real competitive. We used to play with rubber ball which had seam in it. During practice, we used to learn how to seam the ball. The thing in cricket is that a ball would seam even if it’s a rubber ball as long as the seam in pronounced. Some balls would swing massively which was a great art to learn. I wonder if Javagal Srinath and David Johnson had played in that ground as they were also from that district !!!.

As day progressed, I first witnessed cable TV concept in my aunt’s house. They had a local cable guy who used to put latest movies during 6 PM in the evening and 1 PM in the afternoon. I literally couldn’t control the fun I used to have. My smile would get broader and broader at every new such experience. We used to chit-chat again till late in the night. Ashwin used to keep alarm to wake early in the morning. I also used to wake up. He used to go for jogging and running in nearby sports complex. It was amazing to see a host of runners in such a small place. I used to run for 2 rounds and sit down and watch. Ashwin even used to have running competitions with some runners there. It was thrilling to watch. We used to play Table tennis in sports complex. We used to land up at home back by 8 AM. After some yummy breakfast, Ashwin used to study. I used to wonder why would somebody study during holidays 😊 My mom commented that as we go to higher classes, studying constantly would help in main exams. I was in my fun zone. So I winked at mom with an expression “ Ok, Whatever !!! “.

Market of Arsikere was pretty good as well. There was some real good cloth and shoes stores. I happened to see Nike shoes for the first time in this town. I only had seen it in Sportstar magazines before that. There were a few theatres too. Once I wanted to see Prabhakar’s movie “Tiger” and my sister wanted to see movie of Rajkumar. We did the unthinkable. Me and Ashwin went and watched Tiger. Seema, Mamtha and aunt watched Rajkumar movie. I was super thrilled to see Tiger as it was one of the biggest hits of Kannada cinema that year. Aunt used to take us to a temple over a hill as well. It was real fun as view was just fantastic from there.  Ashwin used to pass on the shirts which would be small for him to me. I would thoroughly enjoy it as his taste of dress used to be fab. I clearly recall aunt had given me his light brown Safari dress. I used to like it so much that I had once indicated mom to keep it in safe-locker !!!! .  

After such loads of fun filled moments, my heart would sink to return to Bhadravathi.  I had passed through Arsikere in recent years on my way to Shimoga from Bangalore. Each time I pass, these memories would come over just as if it happened yesterday. It doesn’t matter if place is big or small, what matters is the wonderful memories which you carry with it. My childhood was blessed with such wonderful memories which I will cherish forever.
