Unmistakably Alco
The image was made on a humid day about five miles south-east of Charleston, Illinois. We're standing along one of the several routes owned by the Indiana Hi-Rail Corporation—this particular line was once the Nickel Plate Road.
Number 332, working for the Indiana Hi-Rail Corporation, is an Alco C420. Discerning the lineage of this locomotive was interesting: to begin with, the gray color made me think of the Louisville & Nashville.
Indeed the engine ran for the L&N as number 1332. [It seems that IHRC simply removed the “1” to create a new number: 332.] But the story goes on: the bell on the nose is a tip-off that this locomotive once labored for the Monon (subsumed into the L&N in 1971). The Alco C420 was purchased new for the Hoosier Line in August of 1967 and worked with the number of 515.
One image by Richard Koenig; taken in August of 1990.

Color In A Grayscale World por Danial Por Flickr: On April 11, 1937, the American Locomotive Company held open house to show off the latest in locomotives, and Milwaukee Type Atlantic number 4 was part of that celebration. The 4 was fresh from the paint shop, with the Hiawatha Indian adorning the tender and HIAWATHA nameplate on the flank of the locomotive. The 4 was delivered to The Milwaukee Road in Milwaukee, Wisconsin shortly after, where it would receive finishing touches. In this photo by an unknown photographer 87 years ago today, we see the 4 spot getting steamed up outside of the Milwaukee Shops. The HIAWATHA nameplate on the flank of the locomotive has been replaced with a CHIPPEWA name plate for it's duties between Chicago and Milwaukee, along with service on the recently inaugurated Chippewa Hiawatha. In the cab of the 4 Spot, you can see the engine tender keeping an eye on water levels, steam pressure among his other duties, along with what appears to be some top brass on scene for the initial firing of one of the worlds most famous streamlined steam locomotives. The cost of the final Milwaukee Type Atlantic was $109,230. The number 4 is being held in place by wooden wheel blocking while being fired for the first time, while the company brass inspects her, along with other facets of the area. Had the 4 Spot survived, she would be 87 years old today on her first day of service for The Milwaukee Road, but retirement came in June, 1951. I took the liberty of meticulously bringing color to the beautiful Atlantic for this posting, although the original I have is a darkroom processed black and white image. The Belt Railway Company of Chicago
These images were made at Clearing Yard, Bedford Park, Illinois. I seem to recall that the BRC had an affinity for Alco locomotives. The lead unit in the first two images is an C424 built in May of 1966.
While this is a good year and a half after the Bicentennial, we see a transfer caboose as well as a switch engine in red, white, and blue paint. That locomotive in the last image is an EMD MP15DC built in June of 1975.
Four images by Richard Koenig; taken December 27th 1977.

Ridge Row Switching by Joseph Randall Via Flickr: Delaware-Lackawanna Job PO-74 switches out the cars they picked up earlier from NS as DL3 to assemble the train they would be taking up the Poconos. This task ended up taking way longer than it should have because they apparently were asked by the secret service to clear out the yard of any freight cars as a "security measure" in anticipation of Sleepy Uncle Amtrak Joe's visit to Steamtown the next day. Anyways, while this lead to very frustrating wait while they tried to figure out the hell they were even doing, it did at least lead to a nice afternoon chase to Pocono Summit with angles that usually wouldn't be possible to shoot with this lighting in the morning. Also, having the 2452 & 2461 on the point, the two original Erie Lackawanna engines on property, was a nice bonus as well since both of these engines would have regularly ran on this line back in the 60s & 70s. 10-19-21

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media

I just finished up the paint and detail on my custom Belt Railway of Chicago C424. The decals aren't perfect, but it looks great from 2 feet and should pull pretty well.
I just need to figure out when it'll get its DCC and sound setup, then it'll be done.
