2x12 - 2x22 Alright I did something different this time, I put my thoughts down while watching (usually after I finished the episode) instead of doing it after I finished all the episodes. So I have way more thoughts this time lol, my short term memory was struggling before. All this is to say this is much longer than my last recap thoughts, also this is one of the best seasons of the show so it made the rewatch more enjoyable.

Poor Rose and very dumb on Damon’s part to leave Elena with her having absolutely no idea what the werewolf bite was going to do. The dream sequence he gives Rose is one of the best Damon scenes ever IMO. RIP Rose and that awful wig.

Elena told Damon to be the better man and the groan I let out... I wish you an eternity of misery Kevin Williamson!

I could not stop laughing at Stefan's brilliant idea of talking to Tyler involved him sneaking into his house and then slamming him against the wall LMFAO!! Genius idea Stefan that definitely made him want to help you and be friends, truly a mystery that you two never get along.

The Lexi flashbacks made me sad I was 100% with Stefan glaring at Damon like BTW you’re awful in case you forgot.

Is Alaric wearing eyeliner sometimes or am I seeing things?

The Damon/Andie scenes just make me so mad and uncomfortable, there's moral ambiguity that always exists in this show and then there's this disturbing storyline, fuck the writers.

Ok I admit Matt and Caroline have one good scene (though Caroline does the heavy lifting here) when she sings to him at the grill and they kissed. I clapped, a moment of weakness. Matt ruined the good feelings by the end of the episode though so balance has been restored.

Unintentional Intentional Foreshadowing? At the 60s dance Stefan and Elena are dancing and then Caroline and Matt come in. Stefan leaves Elena to go dance with Caroline and spins Elena into Damon’s arms. While this is happening the song playing is Last Kiss, which is a song about a guy who lost his girl in a car crash. I don't think it was intentional but if I were the writers I would totally take credit and say it was.

I'm sure this is part of the Delener manifesto (which I will never read) but the line "I don't mind being a bad guy. I'll make all the life and death decisions, while you're busy worrying about collateral damage" had me like DAMNNNNNN. Maybe I don't give Damon enough credit because that was a pretty great summarization of why Stefan eventually lets Elena die in 3x22 by "respecting her choices".

I am so tired of the suicide missions this season, choose life!

At least Caroline chooses life! This is when I really started seeing how Caroline is climbing up in the narrative and especially how her love life is gaining more depth and importance. The porch and door scenes in particular because lovers and potential lovers on the porch was something Elena got in S1. For Caroline the doorway represents her heart. We got Tyler inside while Matt is outside in 2x10 because that's when she was helping Tyler and started falling for him, meanwhile she broke up with Matt to protect him. Then Tyler fucks up and he gets the door slammed in his face. Stefan says he can come in if she wants him to in 2x13 but she's not ready to let Stefan in yet, and he realizes that so he brings back-up. Then you've got Matt back inside her heart but really her Mom put him there to spy on her. I really like the shot of Matt at the door looking at Liz in 2x18 before the dance.

IMO most of this season Elena has a relationship with both brothers; she has a physical one with Stefan and an emotional one with Damon and she does that so they are both all about her. And I think this current version of the triangle was the only way she could have both. Because Stefan doesn't care that Damon is also in love with Elena because it means he'll protect Elena (re: quote above) and he'll be in Stefan's life which is all he ever wanted. And Damon because he's so obsessed and consumed by Elena will stay there pining and flirting and acting out when he feels ignored because Stefan will be there to "clean up it up." Everyone wins in a very fucked up way. The problem is she couldn't keep Damon at just an "hopelessly pining" distance and once Elena chose Damon, Stefan wasn't interested in being the one in an emotional relationship.

Klaus knowing all the Mystic Falls gossip already lol.

Tyler saying who’s Klaus my poor boy I wish you never found out. Really loved the Tyler and Caroline scenes the last few episodes (I mean the heart eyes he gives her in the tomb *melts*), they'll always hold a place in my heart.

I'm sorry Liz but you were a terrible sheriff, my god. In fact MFPD is up there with GCPD as the most inept police department in all of fiction. How the hell could they not take down one vampire who was weakened by werewolf venom?

The Stefan and Elena goodbye in 2x20 was so heartbreaking damn, they absolutely have moments where I totally ship them and that's one of them.

2x21 is the best episode of this half and overall the storytelling in this season is really solid. Everything with the sacrifice ritual was well done and even though I knew exactly what was going to happen I was intrigued the whole time, the best was Bonnie coming in with the wind and the fire and the magic. I feel like the show often has a problem where one half of a season will be good than the other meh, this season was solid throughout. Loved the twist that the sun and moon curse was made up.

Some of the acting choices Joseph makes while Klaus is watching Stefan drink the blood bags are… sir I see you and I appreciate you.

Lines that made me laugh:

Damon: Don't mistake the fact that we haven't set you on fire in your sleep for trust. (this made me laugh so hard I had to pause LMFAO his jabs at her were so good)

Caroline: Everyone just needs to stop kissing me! (a classic! Caroline's milkshake brings all the boys to the yard)

Not a line but Alaric having to write “The dagger will kill you…” on a piece of paper and then their mad faces was hilarious! They are just so dumb.

and about s2 in general: it's so well written, gosh. watching for the first time i hadn't notice that, but i love how even the more silly ones were Important to the narrative. my favourite episodes were probably chimney begins, haunted, awful people, and careful what you wish for, but it's such a hit season that it's hard to choose them. also!!! something i miss in these most recent season: the calls. they are So Fun and fit so good to the characters personal lives – that first bomb call on 2x17 paralleling the way shannon dies is INSANE. the foreshadowing throughout the season... just phenomenal.

Julie said it was Kevin's idea to have Damon significantly regress after Rose's death by writing in things like killing Jessica and his treatment of Andie:

When "The Vampire Diaries" writers' room first broke the story for the episode in which Rose dies, the hour had a very different ending. "We had written that entire script, and we had ended Damon's journey on that hug with Elena. We were done with the script and we were moving forward, and somebody said, have we taken Damon to too emotional of a place? He's sad, and he's upset, and he's struggling with dealing with his feelings," Plec says.

"The idea came up that maybe he should just completely regress as a knee-jerk response to having too many emotions. That changed everything."

From there, co-producer Kevin Williamson wrote the speech Damon gave, he snapped the neck of a pedestrian and "it really reinvigorated all of us for that character because Damon is all about how deliciously bad he can be and how epically good he can be, and how the two are always at odds with each other."

This is what she said after 2x13 aired:

Katherine's absence in Damon's life over the last 145 years left room for what Plec calls "the parts of Damon that are so self-destructive and so violent and so aggressive." Damon has lived in that dark place for so long that it's become his nature. Of course, there's something to be said for nurture - and Damon has changed.

After 2x13 aired she also added that Elena would notice and talk to Damon about his treatment of Andie. There was a scene where a script leaked of Elena and Andie talking about Damon in 2x18 but because it leaked it seems like they got rid of that idea: "Damon's continued association with Andie will start to make Elena look at him and wonder... once Elena kind of figures that out and has time to have a heart to heart with Damon, it's certainly something that she's going to discuss with him. He's kind of exploiting this woman and our girl Elena is not going to be so down with that."

Ah man, I wish they would've kept that Elena-Andie scene in. But I am glad they didn't end on the Delena hug. I love Jessica's death so much it's not funny. He's struggling with his two sides, and should struggle with it for a while because he has lived in that dark place for so long. It wouldn't have felt right for his character to not let that crisis play out.

Every time I think about Damon living in the dark for 145 years, I think of a feral cat and what it takes to redomesticate. That's why I laugh when he refers of himself as a mountain lion in 1x4. He not only acts like a cat, he has the personality of one. They have their leash/collar references in 8x9, but he's a total feline.

i agree, the reveal of nancy being lucy's baby and all of 1x16 in general is one of my favorite things from the show, it was so perfectly done. and i do love the death curse storyline. 4x01 was immaculate, it really was. i think my favorite will forever be season 2, specifically 2x18, that one just hits every time. but i truly think s2 is one of the best seasons of television like ever. she's that girl.

I do love season 2, but there are certain things in s2 that sometimes make me mad/sad, so it's a roller coaster. Like Drew Crew's treatment of Nancy at the beginning of the season, and overall really bothered me a little. But they had some strong episodes that I absolutely adore, and I thought the wraith storyline was so well executed. I wish we'd have seen more of the aftermath though? (look at me ramble away again)

Omg, whatever gave you that impression 😂 it's not like I talk about her constantly 🙈 ooof, asking the hard questions I see! So my fave album is always gonna be Reputation. It came out at a very low point of my life and I really related to it so much. Rep is always gonna be that bitch 😎 As far as the songs go, my fave is The Lakes, idk it just makes me feel soft and happy. I also adore ATW 10 minute version.

I'll always associate The Great War with Nace. It's their anthem. And ours. 🥺 I'm always a firm believer that every TS song can be adapted for any ship, but there are some I 100% connect with them, You are in love has some lyrics that always make me think of nace, and so does Long Story Short (long story short it was the wrong guy / And he's passing by / Rare as the glimmer of a comet in the sky / And he feels like home). Exile and I almosr do when I'm feeling especially angsty about S4. Timeless got me through the darkest s4 moments so I'll always associate it with them. And for Nancy I always think of her when I hear You're on your own kid. And State of Grace for Ryan and Lucy 😭.

They're not together long, or shown to be all that established back in 2x06, so it's conceivable he didn't know her abandonment issues. But Emma never made that a secret to anyone. Hell, they met when she stole a car, so she probably did mention it. Then she begged him to let her go with him to Canada and not leave her, and when they were discussing finding Tallahassee, they were clearly discussing their abandonment, underscored when Emma mentions Neverland, the home of lost children, and on their first date in 3x22 at the carousel where she sympathises with his abandonment [where he breaks in, locks her into the swing, tries to shove his hand into her glove then gives up, and there are sirens in the background the entire time - but that's a whole other essay].

And he laughed in Manhattan when she tried to tell him how she felt, cut her off and laughed at her trying to tell him her feelings. Then again he laughed at her in 2x06 Tallahassee when she said she could steal and they could be together, another minor misogynistic, unsupportive act. And again he laughed at her lie detector skills in front of Henry, belittling her in front of Henry in 2x18(or thereabouts) [which is just as bad considering he was therefore laughing at her the entire time she was telling him about her lie detector when they were together, because he knows he was lying and she never caught on]. When he 'apologises' in the episode before he dies, it's a great pre-death character monologue but not an apology. And when she says he hurt her so much she wished he was dead so she didn't have to deal with her trauma he caused anymore, he immediately follows her and basically says, hear you, but I don't respect you enough to leave you be.

I just saw some bitter person complaining about an ask I got about Swanfire and HarleyJoker and how they are both unhealthy, toxic relationships. They said, “what fucking show are they watching?” When I should ask the same question, what show are YOU watching? But considering the amount of OUAT hate on your blog, it doesn’t seem like you even like the show or even watch it so that says a lot right there. 

But anyways, HJ is on a way different level, obviously, I never said they are the same. What I SAID was that they are BOTH unhealthy and toxic relationships, which they are. Swanfire was toxic AF and completely unhealthy for Emma. He belittled her, took advantage of a young, native, underage girl who has abandonment issues, made her feel like crap, betrayed her, laughed in her face when she expressed the pain it felt when he abandoned her, put down her skills and made her feel worthless, LEFT HER IN PRISON PREGNANT FOR HIS CRIME, 

and never even bothered to find her and properly apologize but, instead, say he “didn’t have a choice” even though August clearly gave him one. He could have stayed with her and helped her find a way to break the curse together, but instead, was a coward and ran away from his problems.

He also said if he had known who Emma was he would have never gone near her. Now doesn’t that just sound like true love and healthy? *being sarcastic*

He had hurt her SO BAD that she had wished he was dead. Now does any of that sound health and romantic? Hell fucking no.

Swanfire is unhealthy, toxic, not good for Emma at ALL. And I thank my lucky stars that this ship isn’t canon and has sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Even JMo, who knows her character very, very well and knows Emma Swan WAY better than anyone, agrees that Neal is not her happy ending. He has betrayed Emma too many times.

So yes, Swanfire is toxic and unhealthy. If you’ve got a problem with that than I suggest you stay away from my blog and the anti SF tags, where my post was PROPERLY TAGGED.
