As Mafuyu is heading home from cram school, the sky starts to darken. Thunder can be heard, and the air is starting to cool. Soon after, drops of rain start to hit Mafuyu.

"I didn't bring an umbrella..."

As Mafuyu contemplates just running in the rain (she'll get sick, she might not be able to study for the class test next week, and Mother will—), voices can be heard from behind her.

"I'm telling you, Futaba, that damn Mr. Yukihira is just—"

It's two students from the nearby private art class taught by a Mr. Yukihira, Mafuyu realises. She doesn't know who they are, but she's seen them taking this route to a nearby café several times.

The one with short hair cuts her rant short when she sees Mafuyu, no doubt a pitiful sight in the rain.

"Do you have an umbrella?"

It takes Mafuyu a few moments to realise the girl is talking to her. Trying her best to plaster her "good kid" smile back on her face, she shakes her head.

The girl frowns for a moment, before handing her light brown umbrella to Mafuyu and scooting closer to her green-eyed friend to share her umbrella.

"You don't need to return it, I have another one at home."

"Ah, but—"

"Futaba and I are going to a café anyways, I'll just wait out the rain there," the kind girl says with a smile. She shivers as she's pelted by the rain, the umbrella unable to fully shelter both her and Futaba.

A warmth fills Mafuyu's chest as she watches the pair leave. As Mafuyu makes her way back home, she wonders if she should look out for the girl next time she walks by that area.

She runs into her friend, that Futaba girl, occasionally, but never the girl that gave Mafuyu her umbrella.

When Mafuyu opens that light brown umbrella on another rainy day, she thinks of that smile and wonders why her heart warms at the memory.

Mafuyu doesn't know what exactly about Enanan makes her feel this way. She's not like anyone Mafuyu has met, determined and artistic yet blunt to a fault. Yet she can't shake the feeling of familiarity.

Mafuyu doesn't have much time to dwell on it, anyways. Hiding her love for music from her parents and keeping up her perfect grades is taking it's toll on her.

As she starts to dream of death, her computer screen lights up and a white-haired girl beckons Mafuyu into her embrace.

It clicks when K, Enanan and Amia enter the SEKAI for the first time.

Mafuyu is slipping away, her grip on reality slackening as time passes, but she remembers that face from that rainy day so many years ago.

The warm girl, Ena, has grown. She's started braiding her hair on the side, but her fashion sense has barely changed. She no longer has that kind look in her eyes, lost to the fights with her father that Enanan always brings up. As Mafuyu grew colder over the years, it seems Ena has, too.

When the three leave, Mafuyu wonders why something aches in her chest.

Almost a year has passed.

Mafuyu's mom has started to dig into Nightcord, and Mafuyu's mysterious musician friend.

Whatever hope Nightcord gave Mafuyu is snuffed out as her mother tells her to quit music and focus on her studies. Mafuyu gives her an empty smile and agrees.

In her rush to leave her house, Mafuyu has forgotten to bring her umbrella (Ena's umbrella) to her cram school. She frowns slightly as the sky darkens.

She doesn't want to go home. Home has become colder recently (or maybe it has always been this cold, and Mafuyu is only now realising it) and she doesn't want to return until absolutely necessary.

As Mafuyu is weighing her options, a familiar face carrying a familiar light brown umbrella stops in front of her and for a moment Mafuyu feels 14 again.

Before Mafuyu can fully grasp what's happening, Ena is already dragging her back to the Shinonome household with her (warm, slightly calloused) hand.

The Nightcord meeting has just ended, and they're in Ena's bedroom. Ena is about to dose off when Mafuyu starts to speak.

"Ena, that umbrella..."

Ena raises an eyebrow, encouraging Mafuyu to speak.

"The colour suits you."

Ena smiles at that. She starts to tell Mafuyu about how her mother bought one for her, and another identical one when Ena thought she lost it during a school field trip.

"I don't know where the second one went though," Ena yawns. "I think I gave it to someone a few years ago."

It's raining again. It seems to rain a lot when Mafuyu is feeling lost.

This time, she is without an umbrella, and there is no kind girl to give her one. Ever since her mother tossed her phone into the fish tank, Mafuyu has been wandering with no destination in mind.

Eventually, Kanade finds her and pulls her into a hug. They're both drenched, but the warmth is enough to pull Mafuyu back to herself.

Once she's warmed up at the Yoisaki house, Mafuyu thinks about the light brown umbrella still in her desk drawer at home.

Mafuyu doesn't get the chance to ask Ena about it until a few weeks later. They're both in their third year of high school now, so the workload has increased and they rarely get to speak outside of Nightcord meetings.

"Ena, your umbrella."

Ena predictably looks at Mafuyu with a confused look in her eyes.

"You said... you had two umbrellas, but you gave one to someone?"

Ena nods. "Yeah, I did. What about it?"

Mafuyu still hasn't went back to the Asahina house to retrieve the umbrella. Maybe one day she will, when the thought of seeing her mother doesn't make her feel nauseous.

"I think... you gave it to me when we were in middle school. It's still in my house."

Ena's eyes go wide, processing what Mafuyu just said. Soon, she smiles for a reason unknown to Mafuyu and just tells her it's okay.

Mafuyu wonders why her heart sways ever so slightly, as if caught in a gentle breeze when Ena smiles at her.

Neither of them bring up the umbrella again. As the seasons change, it's started to rain less.

Mafuyu and Ena are on something akin to a date, Ena chattering about the cheesecake she ordered for Mafuyu (she says it's one of her favourites on their menu, but Mafuyu can barely taste the difference).

Mafuyu doesn't know how they got to this point. Over a year ago they were arguing, Ena was yelling, and Mafuyu was looking to disappear forever.

Fast forward to the present, and they're having cheesecake at the same café Ena brought Futaba to. Ena has been trying to find more excuses to hang out with Mafuyu recently, and Mafuyu doesn't really understand it.

Not that she's unhappy to spend time with Ena, of course.

Mafuyu's been working on understanding her feelings. Although she isn't familiar with all the sensations flooding her chest, she knows that Ena feels warm and good and the opposite of the Asahina household.

Mafuyu likes it.

Okay, quick introduction to niigo, [25ji nightcord de / Nightcord at 25:00], they are a super mysterious musical unit who work at 1 am. Composed of Yoisaki 'I ruined my dad's life' Kanade, Shinonome 'I want to ruin my dad's life' Ena, Asahina 'My mom is a very nice person who totally isn't trying to control every aspect of my life' Mafuyu, and Akiyama 'I am the only one in this unit who has zero issues with my family' Mizuki /j. Okay so, Kanade, Ena, Mafuyu and Mizuki! Kanade composes the songs, Mafuyu writes the lyrics, Ena makes art for the mvs and Mizuki animates the mvs! They work on discord [nightcord] and their usernames are K (Kanade), Enanan (Ena), Yuki (Mafuyu) and Amia (Mizuki)!

As for why I like them… I forgor 💀 Ummm i don't remember most of the event stories or the main stories properly <//3 I mainly like them because of their songs. And their vocals. Because they're soft and soothing. Mafuyu and Ena's Hello/How are you cover is just so comforting, so is Kanade's Hated by Life cover! I also like Mizuki and Ena's cover of Charles!!!!

Specifically, I like the character songs, Kanadetomosusora is so soothing wagh… Lower is awesome, Nomad. Nomad oh my god Nomad. AND BUG. BUG'S AMAZING AS WELL!!!!! Kitty is also so cute~~~
