hard as i bat for trans woman mizu subtext i get the criticism of transphobia at the doylist level in how they use a reveal of mizu's body as shorthand for her "real/true" gender as a woman. truly stupid

i genuinely don't understand what they mean when they say mizu is beyond gender bc again the fact that mizu can't live as a woman is like. very explicitly an act of suppression and violence and presenting as a man doesn't make her free or happier it just. the show says it best: fixed number of paths. we see it when mizu and akemi get their love at first sight moment when the bars of the carriage cage in first akemi and then mizu-- trapped in mirroring ways both forced into roles that grant them nominal power that, yes, allows them to do more than many, but nevertheless leaves them unhappy. for akemi it's that she can only ever be a man's property even as a princess in a castle and for mizu it's that she's explicitly degendered--as a man bc of her violence, and as a woman bc of her nonconformity. and both ofc tied w her being mixed race. i love the "her gender is revenge" jokes; for the most part, i agree w them. once she loses everything and rises like the onryo bride she cares for little else but her vow and her vengeance. but this is when she's run out of all other options, when love and understanding have been denied her time and time again. ppl seeing mizu as beyond gender is inextricable from seeing her as inhuman bc of her mixed race. not to say reading mizu as non-binary is groundless. but in the show when they refuse to gender her it's a v intentional act of dehumanization. not androgyny

watching blue eye samurai like fuckkk a story abt a woman having to pretend to be a man to scrape together enough to survive the journey to her goal....a story abt a warrior who when it was finally pushed upon her loved living as a woman and settled comfortably into it until a man's restrictive notions of duty and scrupulosity took from her what joy she'd managed to build up in herself and her identity...a woman who is adept at assembling a decent hand of the cards shes been dealt but will always always peek when offered another look at what she once had to reject...i love stories abt complex trans women ! and she's even patricidal :) to then go into the tag and see every post's calling her transmasc bc she dresses up as a man even as it cuts her to be perceived as one.....sigh. whatever
