25 in 2025
tagged by @agardenandlibrary! I like how we've just decided to keep adding one book every year. How long can we keep this up? Personally, I never plan my reading out super far in advance, so when making a list I always stall around 10 books and have to run around my house looking at stacks of books I have sitting out/scroll through my haphazard "to read" tag on here. But here's a rough idea of what I'll aim to read this year! (Color key below)
Conrad's Fate, Diana Wynne Jones
The Pinhoe Egg, Diana Wynne Jones
Deep Secret, DWJ (I'm already rereading this, but I didn't start until 2025!)
The Merlin Conspiracy, DWJ
Maiden's Trip, Emma Smith
At least one Ngaio Marsh or Dorothy Sayers book (I just know this will happen at some point)
Trashlands, Alison Stine
Where the Dark Stands Still, A.B. Poranek
Elatsoe, Darcie Little Badger
Survival of the Fritters, Ginger Bolton
The Alpine Zen, Mary Daheim
Strange Brew, Kathy Hogan Trochek (and probably the rest of this series, but feels like cheating to put all 3 as separate items!)
Swordspoint, Ellen Kushner
Graveyard Shift, M. L. Rio
The Examiner, Janice Hallett
Saving Susy Sweetchild, Barbara Hambly
A Sorceress Comes to Call, T. Kingfisher
Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer
Dread Journey, Dorothy B. Hughes
The Signal and the Noise, Nate Silver
River-Horse, William Least Heat-Moon
Caste, Isabel Wilkerson
The Odyssey, trans. Emily Wilson
Forthcoming Benjamin January series book, Barbara Hambly
Hopefully some weird fantasy/old mystery book I find in a used bookstore on an upcoming vacation
Planned rereads (of books I own), library books (already checked out, or planning to check out), owned books I need to read/finish for the first time, books I hope to own by the end of the year
The first four library books I have currently checked out and need to get to soon, the rest are just books I want to read but don't plan to purchase. The red owned books aren't books I'll necessarily keep (except Braiding Sweetgrass, which I just got for Christmas) but I got them somehow or other, from free libraries or friends/family passing them along, and now I need to read them and decide!
I promised to tag @bigcats-birds-and-books so here is that belated tag! and then some people who I don't think have done this yet? @tinynavajoreads, @therefugeofbooks @theinquisitxor and anyone else feeling the urge! (No pressure, as always!)
#now i remember why i think i avoided doing this last year#coming up with a full 25 books was hard!#i feel fairly confident I'll actually read a good few of these though#braiding sweetgrass#seems to be on several people's lists; so i'm glad to be on that bandwagon!#(of course several other people have already read it - so i look forward to joining your ranks!)#25 in 2025#to read#(<- so i can find this later and remember what i said i'd read!)

CURRENTLY READING: FEBRUARY 2025
In the Ravenous Dark by AM Strickland
I remember following the hype and release of this one on twitter! And then the library never got it and it was never a priority and then I found it online for four dollars and now I am reading it :D Big fan of demons and blood and magic and pansexuality so I have hopes for this one.

25 in 2025
here are 25 fiction books (plus 5 nonfiction books, because of who i am as a person!) that i want to read in 2025, color-coded!
The Fic:
Craft: Stories I Wrote For The Devil by Ananda Lima
The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djeli Clark
Lost Ark Dreaming by Suyi Davies Okungbowa
Metal from Heaven by August Clarke
Blackfish City by Sam J. Miller
Camp Zero by Michelle Min Sterling
Catchpenny by Charlie Huston
Between Earth and Sky Trilogy by Rebecca Roanhorse
The Future by Catherine LeRoux
A Grace Paley Reader: Stories, Essays, and Poetry
Look No Further by Rioghnach Robinson and Siofra Robinson
Aces Wild by Amanda DeWitt
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling
The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera
A Cage Went in Search of a Bird
Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino
In the Watchful City by S. Qiouyi Lu
The Archive Undying by Emma Meiko Candon
Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh
Bright by Duanwad Pimwana
How to Dance by Jason B. Dutton
Even Though I Knew The End by CL Polk
Whirlwind Romance by Sam Thompson
You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi
the blue this year are Just Because books--i've gotten a zillion novellas in the last couple years that i'm super hyped to read, and i do like stacking my reading material with the season, so i'll try to do CAMP ZERO and BLACKFISH CITY while it's still wintry out there.
purple things are still driscoll-adjacent (writing project coded)--either weird or YA or sentient settings or crisis of faith or community, this year (i'm starting to Reach haha)(hopefully i'll finish these revisions this year though!!).
green starts my NaNo prep, because my aro ass is going to write some weird aro horror/romance hot mess in november, and i need Romance Novel Fodder--i've got a few other things on deck as the time approaches, but this is the start of my list for now >:D
The Nonfic, presented with neither pomp nor colorful circumstance:
Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube by Blair Braverman
Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake
A Taste for Poison by Neil Bradbury
A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf
shout out to @e-b-reads for promising to tag me, which was apparently all the invitation i needed lmao.
tagging @asexualbookbird, @sixofravens-reads, @alloreli, @agardenandlibrary (although you may have already done this?), and anyone else who wants to play!
#text#books#25 in 2025#books of 2025#also some of the blue is adjacent to other writing projects that aren't driscoll lol#LOST ARK DREAMING is hugely an alicia interest for me#so is aces wild actually but we'll lump that with driscoll for YA#the first two nonfic are from my subscription box and i'm going to try to stay on top of those if i can!!#POISON is short story fodder#ENTANGLED is for last year's nano#anyway i'm so excited i spent all day (as of drafting this) reorganizing and rearranging books#and i have a dedicated shelf IN MY ROOM for the ones i wanna read this year!!!!!!!!#asexualbookbird#sixofravens-reads#e-b-reads#alloreli#agardenandlibrary

25 Books for 2025!
Thank you, @myheartalivewrites, for the tag! I'm very excited to read lots this year.
If you follow me on Bluesky, you might have seen the massive and incredible reading rec list I got from my friends on there. There are 60 books on it so far, so I can't list them all here. Also, I only read 20 books in 2024, lol, so I think 25 is probably a more manageable number.
Without further ado:
The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian
When the World Tips Over by Jandy Nelson
The Extraordinaries by TJ Klune
Circe by Madeline Miller
Revolting Prostitutes by Molly Smith and Juno Mac
This is Why They Hate Us by Aaron H. Aceves
When the Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley
The Pairing by Casey McQuiston (I KNOW OK)
Loveless by Alice Oseman
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw
Mortal Follies by Alexis Hall
Crush by Richard Siken
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
Here We Go Again by Alison Cochrun
When We Believed in Mermaids by Barbara O'Neal
Love at First by Kate Clayborn
The Thief of Always by Clive Barker
On Earth, We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
Greta & Valdin by Rebecca K Reilly
The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer (but I'm scared)
Miss Kim Knows and Other Stories by Cho Nam-joo
Margo's Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe
Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
Ok, honestly, that felt like a LOT. Hahaha. I'm tagging @hgejfmw-hgejhsf, @firenati0n, @kiwiana-writes, @holygnocchi, @roseharpermaxwell, @caterpills, @anincompletelist, @cha-melodius, and anyone else who wants to share what they're hoping to read this year!

show me what 9 or 25 or any other number of books you want to read in 2025!📚
#and tag spam ends here i promise lol#book tag#and what sort of number is that even - 9?🤨#half of my life as a reader is actually reading books and then the other half is constantly narrowing down my tbr🤦♀️#last year my list of books that i want to read in the foreseeable future was comprehensive and included 214 titles#i read at least half of them in 2024 and thought for sure next year it's gonna be much shorter than that#but i actually had to narrow down the 2025 updated list to be no more than 225 books!#my tbr is like the lernaean hydra - you read one book and three new ones pop up in its place#this top priority list was also hard to narrow down but looking at it now i'm satisfied😌#btw the hands of the emperor i'm already 25% into but i decided that i'm gonna finish it next summer bc it's a summer book

25 books for 2025
Thanks for the tag @agardenandlibrary ☺️
Honestly, I just want my physical TBR to go down, but there are some books I really want to read before the others. Although I didn't really put them in any kind of order here
Le Paris des merveilles #2, Pierre Pevel (and #3 I guess)
Blackwater, Michael McDowell (the whole series, really)
A dowry of blood, S. T. Gibson
All these sunken souls, anthology (mostly for Joel Rochester aka fictionalfates)
Nettle and bone, T. Kingfisher
These violent delights, Chloe Gong (from my advent calendar)
The dark days club, Alison Goodman (also from my advent calendar)
The ballad of songbirds and snakes, Suzanne Collins
Camp damascus, Chuck Tingle
The locked tomb #1, Tamsyn Muir
Reread The ruin of kings #1, Jenn Lyons (so I can do the whole series)
Reread Iron Widow (Xiran Jay Zhao) so I can read Heavenly tyrant
Dr. Greta Helsing #4, Vivian Shaw (coming out this year)
Le jour du caillou, Véro Cazot (story) & Anaïs Flogny (illustrations) (it's a graphic novel)
The jasmine throne, Tasha Suri (and then read the whole trilogy if I like it)
Before the coffee gets cold, Toshikazu Kawaguchi
Pageboy, Elliot Page
Coraline, Neil Gaiman & illustrated by Aurélie Neyret
He who drowned the world, Shelley Parker-Chan (I need a refresh but I don't have the strength to reread book 1)
Any of the Jules Verne I own, honestly. At least one
Nous, Christelle Dabos
Any of the 2 Osemanverse books I still have to read, so either I was born for this or Radio silence (Alice Oseman)
The priory of the orange tree, Samantha Shannon (one day I'll finally read it)
Ariadne, Jennifer Saint
The sunbearer trials, Aiden Thomas
Tagging some people but feel free to participate if you want!

Normally I don't plan my reading in advance, because I simply follow whenever my fancy leads me, but this challenge seems fun! 25 books I want to read in 2025 - let's go.
(I've been missing the classics recently, so this list is a bit classic-heavy. Also I ended up being unable to keep it to 25. Oops.)
Color coding:
pink = fiction
green = nonfiction
An asterisk means it's a book I already own in physical form.
As I read books on this list, I will italicize them.
1. Willa Cather - My Ántonia
2. Gabriel García Márquez - One Hundred Years of Solitude
3. Timothy Snyder - On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century
4. Han Kang - Human Acts
5. Geraldine Brooks - Horse
6. Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone - This Is How You Lose the Time War
7. Ruth Kinna - The Government of No One: The Theory and Practice of Anarchism
8. John Steinbeck - The Grapes of Wrath
9. Virginia Woolf - A Room of One's Own
10. Leslie Feinberg - Stone Butch Blues
11. Mary Doria Russell - The Sparrow
12. Banana Yoshimoto - Kitchen
13. Howard Zinn - A People's History of the United States
14. Betty Smith - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
15. Fyodor Dostoevsky - Notes from the Underground
16. Upton Sinclair - The Jungle
17. Jorge Luis Borges - Labyrinths*
18. Olga Tokarczuk - Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead
19. Akwaeke Emezi - Little Rot
20. Naomi Klein - No Logo
21. Hengameh Yaghoobifarah - Ministerium der Träume
22. Kim de l'Horizon - Blutbuch
23. Yaa Gyasi - Homegoing*
24. Susanna Clarke - Piranesi
25. E. M. Forster - Maurice
26. Richard Adams - Watership Down
27. Ursula K. Le Guin - The Left Hand of Darkness
28. Henry James - The Portrait of a Lady
29. Mikhail Bulgakov - The Master and Margarita
30. Frank Herbert - Dune
Additionally, I'm going to tag on a second goal list. My "currently reading" pile has become way too huge, because I have a fickle heart and tend to hop around from book to book (or, as Bertie Wooster would say, I "flit and sip" like a butterfly). So I'm aiming to finish at least five books that I already started in 2024:
1. Albert Einstein - Essays in Humanism
2. Daniela Dröscher - Lügen über meine Mutter
3. Priscilla Murolo & A. B. Chitty - From the Folks Who Brought You the Weekend
4. Frantz Fanon - Black Skin, White Masks*
5. Simon Blackburn - Think: A Compelling Intro to Philosophy*
#25 in 2025#reading challenge#booklr#books#reading#cosmo gyres#actually i own several more of these in physical form than are marked with asterisks#but they're stored away in boxes somewhere in another country :(#i miss my old book collection#my current one is so much smaller#return to this#also yes i am adding books in only two languages to my reading list this year#that may seem a bit sad to those who know me but don't worry!#i'm still planning to read in various languages as usual#but i don't want to aim too high and start stressing out about something that's supposed to fun
