New Branch
A hunched tree, With a trunk as wide as I am And probably just as old, Grows new branches. They are thin and wispy, And at just the right height For bored schoolkids to snap them off as they pass. I worry that these tender beginnings will never grow strong, Will never become reliable boughs that children can climb on And trust to hold their weight. Destruction is most pitiful when potential is thoughtlessly crushed.
