Writing Update: January 2025 

Hey-LO, what is up? I fell off the wagon sharing these early on in 2024, because last year did its damnedest to kill me. It failed, because I am the human equivalent of a cockroach. However, my writing definitely took a hit. 

But! 2025 is gonna be better, and is already off to a none-too-shabby start! Total wordcount is a nice tidy number, especially given that I did have my usual winter hibernation, and didn’t start writing until the bottom third of the month.

Highlights: 

Started another Deadpool fic, because I love that character so much, he’s so delightfully unhinged

Made significant progress on the BDSM AU (Paradigm)—it’s almost finished! I’m so excited! 

Made a good chunk of progress on the Demon Eskel AU I’m cowriting with @piceuscelus

Have made serious progress on Patreon content creation, such that I should be able to get back into the flow of things and work far enough ahead on content that a regular schedule is back in reach

I signed up for an event! (It's a bingo)

Goals for February: 

Finish the BDSM AU—it’s so close I can taste it

Post the short Witcher crackfic I have written

Start writing for bingo (and maybe post some of the ridiculous that will ensue)

Continue the Patreon work, so that a schedule can be re-established and I can have less stress in my life

GL Odds and Ends January 2025

I'm still trying to figure out what 2025 means for me in terms of where and how I spend my time, but one thing I am passionate about is making sure there is a record of GL media, so I'm going to try to prioritize keeping this up to at minimum monthly, though I might change up the format. Last one was end of December 2024. If you're interested in GL older than that, check out my GL rec list and my #gl recs tag for the other odds and ends posts. Series new to the roundup are marked with an asterisk*.

Currently airing (with thoughts up to 31 Jan):

Petrichor ep 9/10 (Thai, Saturdays, 10:00 AM ET, iQIYI) I've appreciated the struggle that Tul has gone through in terms of wanting to use her police powers to protect her family though that goes against her morals, and some of the procedural aspects I was grumbling about before have been explained by the plot. However, it still bothers me that she's not a very good detective. That being said, Engfa and Charlotte still have fantastic chemistry, and Na is having what seems like the time of his life.

*Us the series ep 2/12 (Thai, Saturdays, 8:00 AM ET, YouTube) I admit I think I have Chao Planoy fatigue. Age gap, both characters are lying to each other, there are abusive family members, and a guy who seems nice but I'm braced for a reveal about how he's actually awful. I'm feeling like I'm playing bingo. Honestly If someone gets hit by a car I might lose it. All my baggage aside, the pacing on this feels uneven and it doesn't feel like it has its feet yet.

*Call Me By No Name ep 4/8 (Japanese, Thursdays, 12:30 PM ET, GagaOOLala) Honestly I am not buying the romance between these two protagonists and I am finding them a little overwrought.

*Trunk Girl ep 1/? (Korean, possibly Thursdays, YouTube) This has just started, and the vibes are off. I am suspicious of the circumstances that led this runaway to stay with her friend, especially when she kissed her in her sleep (and I don't mean suspicious of sapphic feelings, those are already taken as given considering the genre).

*FirstLOVE ep 5/? (Korean, Mondays, YouTube) Toxic girlfriend gets replaced and then regrets letting her lover go. We'll see how this ends but this is another messy drama that feels pretty rough.

*I Am Devil ep 5/? (Thai, Saturdays, YouTube) Gonna be honest with y'all I watched ep1 and shelved the rest, it's a pulp in the style of high drama like Sastra and JPC below produce and just isn't my jam. If you're looking for high heat lakorn-style drama, give this a try.

Recently Completed:

The Fragrance You inherit 8eps 25mins each (Japanese, 8 Nov 24-27 Dec 24, no official distribution but fansub on @isaksbestpillow's blog[thank you Siiri!] I loved this finale and wrote about it here. For those who don't want to click the link, in short this is not a romance but a really beautiful and sweet show about all kinds of interpersonal relationships.

Pluto 12eps 45 mins each (Thai, 19 Oct 24-04 Jan 25, YouTube) This series showcased the skills and chemistry of Namtan and Film, and had some of the most iconic product placement in a GL to date. The plot was messy but held together, and as much as I was unimpressed with their choices week to week, their choices made sense within the narrative (and genre) being told. I knew this one wasn't for me, but what it was doing, it did pretty well, and beautifully. The one real ding from me was the use of blindness as a metaphor that essentially got handwaved away; that and I think it was doing too much. But I am glad that before that, there was some great use of their platform to highlight the importance of universal design.

INTP 4eps 5 mins each (Korean, 27 Dec 24-22 Jan 25 YouTube) This is the latest short series from RedQ, who produced some of my favourite GL short series including More than or equal to 75 degrees C, and To the Ex who Hated Me. I said when this started that the setup of this one reminded me of Semantic Error if SangWoo realized he was attracted to JaeYoung at their first group assignment meeting, and I think that holds. These two fell for each other because they both care about the group project, and both protect each other. It's a bit short but I found it very sweet.

Mate, 12eps 50+ mins each (Thai, 26 Nov 24-28 Jan 25 fast-track or 4 Feb 25, WeTV (uncut version)) In the end this show remained a struggle for me. There were things it was doing that I really liked (the characters tried hard not to resort to noble idiocy, and when characters did resort to noble idiocy they were confronted with the consequences, for example), and things that I really did not, and there were parts that were really hard to watch and will haunt me. There are a lot of things I like about this show, so I don't want to discourage views. Just go into this one informed, and make the decision that's right for you.

*Adrenaline 4eps 15 mins each (Thai, 10 Jan-31 Jan 25, YouTube) This show is a cross between a travel ad and a lakorn. This is a major spoiler, but the main character has a secret condition where she forgets things that causes her to forget her first time with her girlfriend!? This show is so messy lol

Recent One-offs, Side Couples, etc.:

Fireworks of Yesteryear/When We Met has been made available on YouTube. A 35-minute Chinese GL that includes a makeout and as a result the production team have been working hard to get it in front of eyeballs. This is a moody piece with an open ending; there's an age gap too so YMMV (30s and 22).

GL microseries Your Name Engraved Herein (not to be confused with the BL feature film) has been subtitled by @douqi7s. Watch the original on Bilibili and enjoy the subs on YouTube. This one is also melancholy but it's some really tight storytelling in under 2 mins and manages to feel hopeful even though it's sad.

There is a lesbian side couple in Flirt Milk the series (airing now on iQIYI). This couple Noon and Praewa previously appeared as sides in Love Senior.

There is a new MV featuring a lesbian couple for the artist KnomJean on YouTube. This is one of those MVs that tells a story (TW for family violence) and after getting through the sad backstory, celebrates marriage equality in Thailand.

IdolFactory is re-running GAP the series on YouTube. If you've been putting off watching, now is a good time!

Speaking of re-runs, Yes Or No and the two sequel/spinoffs (Yes or No 2, and Yes or No 2.5) are all newly on GagaOOLala for streaming in some regions (I know for sure they're in North America, not sure about others)

Uranus2324 is starting to show up in particular places on the internet. I watched it and after all of the negative things I'd heard I actually liked it lol I'll see if I can write about it more this week

My suspected wlw sides in See Your Love ended up being implied only I was a little sad about this but at least I wasn't imagining the vibes.

Mom Ped Sawan is still airing but I still don't have a source for subs

Sastra film app YouTube channel has several short Cambodian GL series that come out weekly Honestly they are not to my taste but I don't like gatekeeping GL especially from smaller markets. I check in on these time to time and if there are any that I think are great I'll give them a shout-out

In my quest to find high school romcoms to fill the gap Kieta Hatsukoi left I followed my fascination with fictional idols. Concepts like Uta no Prince-sama and Idolmaster is interesting in how they produce idols and an alternative form of idol otaku culture, but what about fiction that aim to be relatable but also wish fulfillment to those who are deep into stan culture, or its Japanese equivalent: Oshi-culture (Oshi more or less being the Japanese equivalent of a Bias). Tamon's B-side begins when our heroine Utage, who has a near religious love for her bias: the wild and fanservice-y Tamon of F/ace, not only forms a direct and personal relation to him, she not only learns that his private self is a self-hating, gloomy, near suicidal at all times young man who despite his massive popularity believes himself to be nothing more than a mold spore infecting the earth. Utage is determined to make the people's prince gain confidence and stop wanting to leave this mortal coil at any given time. The series manages to capture the fearsome consumerist machine that fans participate in, the elaborate social codex they operate under, but also captures the conflicting nature of romantic fantasies involving your bias. Because in oshi culture your oshi belongs to no one but the fans as a collective. And whats a religious zealot to do when her deity gets attached to her. All while being a really fun comedy that plays on exaggerated slapstick and emotional extremes. Really hoping the anime adaption brings some fun music to go along with the series bc the official stan twitter accounts are already so fun.

I need to paraphrase a short review I saw for Sanmon Shousetsushuu: "I thought the lady novelist was pretty nasty but the guy is a piece of work himself". Imagine watching your father die a really horrible death, but the way he died is so ridiculous your trauma is never taken seriously. Our protagonist has been a laughing stock his whole life because of his failed comedian father whose life ends with a failed stunt in an aquarium shark tank. But one night he hooks up with a woman who rather than laugh at his story cries. She disappears in the night and years later he finds out she has made a whole career off of his life story. This begins a twisted love/hate affair between the eccentric novelist and a "wild dog". Love nasty adult romances where neither party needs each other for anything but still can't leave each other alone I think there's something beautiful in that. The included one-shot while a bit saccharine with its conclusion I also found pretty satisfying in its portrayal of twisted attachments.

And want to report that Ball and Chain (first chapter has been scanlated!!) as well as Hirayasumi are not losing steam after the great first volumes for each series. Can't wait to read more in 2025!!

“Well, I’m telling you, I’ve seen you in many, many states over the years, babe, and this… this is definitely the epitome,” Louis murmured. Told in a series of flashbacks, the story of Zayn and Louis from children to parents.

Fall of 2024 rolls around and they find themselves on a writing retreat/reunion at Zayn’s farm. Can they finally figure out what it means and give it a shot? Or will this be one of those things? A story that plays on in a memory while the future marches ever forward. A youthful comfort and nothing more.

1. looking for a fic where there was a secret fight club in Hogwarts, a lot of boys would fight (don't know if mud was involved or not) but in the end the loser would get fucked by the winner, in the fic harry and draco fought and Draco won, he tried to give harry an out and let him do it in a private room but Harry refused because those weren't the rules, they should do it in front of the whole club

2. Draco becomes friends with Harry’s wife. Harry came out as gay years ago, but after going to the continent he came back with a French wife. The Weasleys and Hermione were introduced to the wife by Harry prior to the events taking place in the fic, but they didn’t and still don’t trust her. Years later, it seems that Harry has run off. The Weasleys and Hermione are concerned for Harry but they don’t really know what happened. Draco befriends Harry’s lonely wife and ends up looking after Teddy (as a nanny perhaps?). Draco finds out that Harry is being imprisoned in the house, because the wife, who had love potion-ed Harry, couldn’t keep him oblivious anymore. Harry is being seriously starved. Teddy is worried about it and misses Harry, he also doesn’t like the wife, even though he has to act like he does sometimes (and is being manipulated by her). Teddy helps Draco uncover the truth. Post War Drarry story. Original Female Character (Villian). Spousal abuse / domestic abuse. Imprisoned/kidnapped Harry.Teddy Lupin (Kid Fic). Complete fic. Long (approx. 12000 - 40000 words I think?). Read on AO3

3. There are two scenes that I remember and a couple bits of general world building. I’m fairly certain the fic is at least 10k+ words but I think it’s longer and had multiple chapters. It’s been completed. The relationship isn’t pre-established (although both the scenes I remember are from after they’ve gotten together). I think Draco works in a shop of some kind, possibly brewing potions, but not necessarily. The Malfoy fortune has either been seized post-war or he’s estranged from his parents, but either way, he now lives in a slightly run down flat instead of the manor. I think it’s mostly third-person limited to Draco’s POV, but there are at least a few moments where we see Harry’s thoughts. The first scene I recall is slightly more hazy. Draco asked Harry to dinner and then something prevented him from going. I think he may have gotten sick/depressed or something but when Draco doesn’t arrive, Harry is concerned since he’s not usually late. He shows up at Draco’s flat and Draco is kinda of out of it and confused and when he asks why Harry’s there, he explains and Draco says something like “I’m never late” to which Harry agrees and says that’s why he knew something was wrong and that he’s glad he came because no one should be on their own like this. Draco is upset because he thinks maybe that means Harry isn’t really there because it’s him, but because he’d do this for anyone, and Harry quickly clarifies that he wants to look after Draco specifically. The second scene is a bit more specific. Throughout the fic, Draco has been staying over at Harry’s after they sleep together and Harry has been going out in the mornings to get them pastries for breakfast. The first time that they sleep at Draco’s flat, he’s gone when Draco wakes up. Draco lets his insecurities get the better of him and convinces himself that Harry has decided he’s not worth his time and left. He’s surprised when Harry returns with their morning pastries and Harry realizes something is off. He asks Draco what’s wrong. He may have even asked if something had happened with his mum but Draco is embarrassed and gets a bit tetchy and doesn’t want to talk about it. He tries to get Harry to just eat breakfast and not worry about it, but Harry keeps pressing. He wonders if Draco noticed and was upset by the tiny bit of snooping he did when he woke up. Finally Draco admits that he was worried Harry had decided he wasn’t good enough and left. Harry is obviously a bit horrified and asks why he would think that. Draco says something along the lines of “This is all I have and now that you know how little I have to offer, it just makes sense that you’ll leave”. Harry reassures him by saying something like “I don’t need you to offer more of what I already have”. And then they make up and eat their yummy breakfast treats. If I’m being honest, I’m not entirely sure that these two scenes are from the same fic.

4. I’m looking for a fic I read a while ago and never found again. It’s set on 8th year and it starts off with drarry already in a relationship because they started talking again the summer before eight year, Harry used to go to Malfoy manor I think and Luna a Draco were friends?? Or cousins? I’m not sure but they were in good terms. When it starts they’re in class and Harry is late, Draco thinks he’s going to hide but Harry sits next to him immediately so Ron and hermione are confused because they didn’t know Harry was talking to Draco. I remember Harry was going through training for the aurors while in Hogwarts and at some point something happened so Draco had to do something in Harry’s neck, like a bond or something like that and hermione didn’t like it much. Ron thought at first that Harry was going after pansy but then Harry told him he was with Draco and they fought, hermione was having nightmares or some kind of issue too with erasing her parents memories and Draco gave her advice later. That’s all I really remember

5. oneshot, I think it was eighth-year. Draco was obsessing over Harry and Pansy was teasing him, telling him he was drooling. Harry was over the Gryffindor table with Ginny. Throughout the fic, Draco was obsessing over Harry’s physique. HPDM end up making out in the eighth-year common room, much to Ron’s loud disgust saying that nobody wanted to see that, and Pansy saying ‘speak for yourself’. Ron asked Herms for backup and she shrugs because she agrees with Pansy. Then they go up their own room and smut ensues. Top Harry/Bottom Draco. A few days laster Draco complains to Pansy that his arse hurts because Harry was VERY enthusiastic, which follows up with Harry entering the eighth year common room to try to seduce him, and Pansy asking in amusement if he still wants to be saved. The fic ends with Harry obsessing over a part of Draco’s body like Draco was obsessing over Harry earlier in the fic. So it’s a smut oneshot from ao3.

6. It is either a force bonding or accidental bonding fic, in which draco had to move to No 12 Grim place. He calls for his house elf for help when Hermione gets angry coz slavery and muggle history. She is black i think in this fic. So draco explains that there is a symbiotc relation between pureblood and elf, where the elf bonds with one pure blood and they get their magic/energy source from the wizard and in returns they work for them. Hence why freeing an elf is not that easy unless they want to.

The Cluster (Session 1) Alun R. runs for Joe F, Kae, and Sabine V. A Routine Cargo Run - We meet Gallant, a Deacon of Galiel's Aid & Order, an authoritarian government to whom he betrayed his parents. He is accompanied by Nestor Green, bought out of 'The Creche' of the barely survivable world of Snagg by a mercenary company, before going AWOL, and Jax Merrin, former dodgy investigator among the asteroids of Iron Wreath, who made a choice that led to his partner being pushed out of an airlock... A routine cargo run to the Galiel colony of 'Budding Two' turns complicated when there are missiles, a hot reception, and a a misunderstanding calmed down. Then, disturbing clues of criminal involvement, smuggling and heresy...

The Cluster (Session 2) Alun R. runs for Joe F, Sabine V., and Will H A Budding Mystery - When Deacon Gallant goes missing there's a difficult meeting with an unconcerned Dean for which Dr Marion Rillisk comes down from orbit to join Jax & Nestor. Dissatisfied with the Dean's response the team split up to look for Gallant. There's a cigarette break that turns into a knife fight (or maybe just practice); an attack (that might have been an assassination attempt); and an explosion that threatens potential evidence. Then, a suspect presents herself but the involvement of a potent Faction causes everyone to take a deep breath before the team gets back together...and gets a potentially very valuable job!

The Cluster (Session 3) Alun R. runs for Kae, Sabine V., and Will H A Whisper in the Void - Though Jax stays off-screen the reunited crew depart on a potentially lucrative job through the Ring Gate to the Void system. There's the cramped quarters and discomfort of travel between Gates and some shore leave before there's a Whisper to follow. Then, a distress call, PDCs at short range, and a high G pursuit that turns into a missile duel...

The Cluster (Session 4) Alun R. runs for Joe F, Kae, Sabine V., and Will H The Forsaken - The Crew land among the high peaks that keep the Forsaken 'safe' above the dense jungles, fungal infections and spore storms that leave the rest of the planet largely uninhabitable. Deacon Gallant is surprised by missionaries and Nestor isn't sure why they'd want to hunt down a stranger, while Jax and Rillisk con Captain Golvan into giving them access to the Whisper's logs. There's spare parts collected and a short interdiction by the Ring Gate Authority, while Gallant's a crisis of faith is painfully resolved (or is it) and a salvage op turns into the rescue...that may provide the segue-way to Season 2...

Wickedness (Session 1 of 3) Donogh runs for Matthew Doughty and Sabine V. Using the Urban Fantasy playset, discover the Sanctuary, City and the Underworld our coven of witches find themselves in. Meet Pepper the Pure Heart, Ivy the Wild Spirit and Motley the Old Soul, their friends and neighbours and their truths.

Wickedness (Session 2 of 3) Donogh runs for Matthew Doughty and Sabine V. The Coven's trouble begin when Ivy is captured by a Greedy Devil and placed in a gilded bird cage for purposes unknown. How will the others rescue their friend?

Community Radio: WAYS "You'll Find Yours, Just Wait" Lowell Francis runs for Cale P, Casey T, David S., and Rae Nedjadi We play a one-shot of Quinn Murphy's Community Radio. Your town has deep secrets, terrifying monsters, unspeakable evils, a clandestine city council making strange decrees...and a public radio station! In Community Radio, a group of 3 - 10 people gather to improvise scenes that show what life is like in this town, with accompanying public radio broadcasts. It's a game of dark humor and fast thinking that can entertain for 1-2 hours. If you like Welcome to Nightvale, this is the game for you!

Kingdom 2e: Far Station Eschaton (Session 1 of 2) Lowell Francis runs for Dominik M., Eliot, and Marc The first of a two-part series of Kingdom 2e by Ben Robbins, with a frame influenced by Deep Space Nine and Babylon Five. In this session we split between set up and playing out our first Crossroad. Far Station Eschaton has experienced a boom with the opening of a new wormhole leading to a sector of space shrouded in legend. But this has created new pressures from population, a nearby civil war, and the influence of a Confederation that is a shadow of its former self.

Kingdom 2e: Far Station Eschaton (Session 2 of 2) Lowell Francis runs for Dominik M., Eliot, and Marc The second of a two-part series of Kingdom 2e by Ben Robbins, with a frame influenced by Deep Space Nine and Babylon Five. In this session we split deal with the fallout from the first Crossroad and explore a second one. New forces threaten Far Station Eschaton when a new alien people emerge from the wormhole and offer an alliance. Will the station take up this opportunity? What costs must be paid?

January has been the toughest month I’ve had in a very long time. Midway through I honestly couldn’t see the end of it. I’ve spent many days not writing anything at all, which is totally fine but was also very demotivating—on top of everything else. Realizing you’re not even able to do this one thing that helped you push through the past year is hard.

Anyways, I honestly didn’t think I’d meet my monthly goal but I did and I’m embracing this as a win. And no, the win is not the number of words I’ve written, the win is the fact that this month is over and that I’m just. here at all. I’m thankful for the way writing can be such an escape and how healing it can be sometimes. ❤️

All this to say I’ve decided to try documenting each month’s roundup for future me and am starting now.

Writing Update - January 2025

So, uh, whoops! I totally forgot to do a monthly roundup last weekend. Better late than never!

In my defense, work has been absolutely kicking my butt for the last while. Plus we have some house infrastructure stuff that has been stressing me out, so I've not been at my best. Alas.

I got a bit of writing done in January. Of note, I finished the draft for The Prime and His Protector! 🥳 In doing my revisions/edits I realize that I still need to do some major surgery on the last chapter to tie up a loose end, but otherwise... Whew. Excellent, so glad to have that off my plate.

I'm going to be focusing on some smaller stories for the next while, even though I do have some longer ones kicking around in the wings. I still have plans to work on the longer "how they met" humanformers fic as a self-indulgent thing, and finish working on the next long story in my fantasy AU. But I really want to get back into churning out silly stuff more regularly without having to worry about overarching plots and stuff. No more political stories for a while, because writing those is very hard on my brain.

Anyway, while I was finishing Prime/Protector, I churned out 10,183 words in January, blowing past that 3k target. I'm gonna leave that target where it is for February, though.

Let's see if I can get February's update up on time next month. XD

Resonant. 5300 words. This is a prequel to Prime/Protector, focused on Bluestreak/Hound. I've had some people go "whaaaat" at what happened to Blue in the first chapter of the main fic, so this is intended to be a little twist of the dagger. 😅

The Prime and His Protector. 64,500 posted so far. I've got about 14k left to post for this fic, give or take. It'll end up being 25 chapters long.

total monthly word count: 4114 (about a third of what i wrote in december, and one of the lowest monthly wcs since i started tracking)

i only made this goal after my last monthly post, so it wasn't included in that, but in the spirit of wanting to finish my longest-running wip, vampire chrissy au, i want to try to make it at least 10% of what i write every month! it's only 7% this month, but i honestly didn't do a whole lot of writing this month so i'll give myself a pass.

things i said i would do this month:

start on my actual main steddie bingo - ❌ i have not started planning this even a little bit 😬
