♪ "Still trapped in this endless dream // I don't know where I'm going tonight" ♪

The wait is over! I have been so confused about this whole concept project since the very first announcement came out (i.e. flying poster landed on the sidewalk) about this completely random Jeonghan & Wonwoo duet, but it's finally making more sense with the full MV out. This whole time, all the company SNS updates kept spamming "THIS MAN", but then the title track is actually called "Last Night" (works out for me in the end).

"Who wouldn't want to go with him?" — What a great way to end the prologue before the song starts!

You can hear the guitar in the intro now! Funny how the editors timed Jeonghan's "This silent moonlit night" with him opening his eyes (the literal translation is more like "moon-rising night").

"Nox" is Latin for "night", which fits the entire concept.

It looks like Jeonghan is eating clam chowder based on the color & how he added black pepper to his bowl (just random thoughts).

"It's a PAIN that digs deep" — "PAIN" is in English. Reminds of the awful font where "MAN" was stylized to also look like "PAIN".

"The more it hurts me, the happier I'll be." — OK Wonwoo XD

The transition from each verse/prechorus to the chorus is surprisingly fast (feels like less than a second in between).

Not a whole lot of rapping for Wonwoo, but his 2nd verse is something else... The cartoon lemon reminds me of his juice box.

BLACK & WHITE ANIMATED JxW FOR LIFE! (even if the cameo was short) I can't stop replaying the scene where Jeonghan falls to his knees dramatically at daybreak (i.e. TIME TO WAKE UP) while Wonwoo kneels down slowly & (mercifully) takes JH out of this (miserable) dreamland.

I assume white-shirt Jeonghan is in reality whereas black-suit Jeonghan is in his dreamland. (Wonwoo wears black during the entire MV.) Whoever styled his hair at the very end when he woke up (with the glass of lemonade) made him look like Joshua. @_@

There is LITERALLY NO VISIBLE CHOREO in this MV (& barely any lipsyncing to the lyrics), so you have no idea what to expect for any upcoming performances (which might only be 1 or 2 at most based on current chatter).

Technically, there isn't a 3rd/final chorus, but after the UNIQUE BRIDGE (thank goodness for that) is a repeat of the post-chorus. Both are enough for my expectations!

You get Wonwoo as the MV thumbnail because Jeonghan is already on the teaser thumbnail :D It took me a while to cleanly make this GIF of the animation sequence.

As for the B-side solos, I have very different thoughts about each, but I agree that they both could be OSTs (for completely different drama genres, though):

"Leftover (Wastebasket)": I could play Wonwoo's solo on repeat (genuinely surprised by the ballad theme). The chorus reminded me of "Endless Love" by Jackie Chan & Kim Hee Seon (from their movie "The Myth"). This song could be an OST for a modern or historical drama (just have to slightly modify the lyrics).

"Beautiful Monster": I don't think I can play Jeonghan's solo ever again because it's too bubbly for me (no 3rd chorus = more than a minute shorter than Wonwoo's solo). This sounds like an OST for... a Taiwanese idol drama??? (I'm being as nice as possible here)

i wanna see old musician wayne. someone eddie always thought was cool (when he still had all his hair) growing up. someone who ended up with this sad little kid who needed an outlet and teaching him the basics. the kid falling in love with music.

watching him be something he never could’ve done, he wasn’t good enough, but his boy is good enough, his boy is going places. be it music or otherwise, his boy has a passion he knows it special.

then spring break happens. and his boy’s spark is dimmed, flickering, hanging on by some miracle.

wayne notices. he sees it not just eddie’s aching body, bandaged gashes and sore stitches. he sees it’s not just injuries. his boy doesn’t want to play, not just because he can’t.

he gets a flinch in reply to a question about a guitar. he gets brushed off when he asks if he’s itching to play. he gets sudden distant eyes, and a static reaction when he sets up his record player.

his boy doesn’t heal as fast he should. his boy avoids going out. his boy struggles to get his feet under him, let alone to stand back up.

watching his boy become a husk in front of his eyes. monotone and vacant, he seems checked out without the narcotics.

once brazen and defiant, he’s watching it get snuffed out. and by god if he’s going to stand idle any more. he’s not letting his boy give up on himself like he did.

he avoids the more typical eddie style, and sits down with his acoustic. wayne snagged it when that harrington boy dragged him out of the house the other day, eddie didn’t even notice it’s absence.

it’s been years, far too long, having let eddie take the reins of tight strings over frets all those years ago. he plays something mellow, something by ear, something by heart, something eddie will know.

he’s only playing for a maybe a minute before a curious head peaks out from around the corner, and then a whole body leaning against the wall.

“can’t believe you still know how to play.”

“sound that bad, huh?” eddie snorts, shaking his head slightly, uncrossing his arms and making his way to join on the couch across from wayne.

he starts again from the beginning, playing the old tune from his favorite album, the last one his sister listened to—the last one eddie’s mom listened to.

making room for eddie to join him, he doesn’t hum along, just plays the melody.

the first few seconds go by quiet, just the two of them listening to the gentle strums. eddie starts to mutter the words, tapping his knee to the beat, like he’s unable to kept himself away from the lull of music.

steady rhythm, eddie closes his eyes, bashfulness at softly singing or falling right into wayne’s obvious trap it doesn’t really matter. his boy starts to bounce his foot, body thrumming with the noise.

“but listen carefully to the sound,

of your loneliness,”

he looks at home, a nice picture to the empty shell he seems to be. he’s still there, just hiding himself, feeling far too exposed, to open. it’s not the first time wayne’s had to crack the shell he locks himself away in.

a bit rusty and corse, wayne joins him.

and for what it’s worth—the small smile that breaks across his face—it’s worth millions to him.

“thunder only happens when it's rainin'”

he’ll keep playing if his boy can’t. he’ll keep playing for his boy. till his fingers bleed, till he’s at deaths door, it doesn’t matter.

and whether eddie adds more kindle to his flame or not, wayne isn’t letting it get smothered any time soon.

J'ai juste besoin de lui ; rien ne sait compter plus que lui. J'ai besoin de le voir sur la table, à se faire comprendre pour avoir des croquettes ; et puis miauler, parce qu'il sait bien faire maintenant, et miauler parce que ça va pas assez vite ! Je veux le retrouver tout mouillé et que monsieur attend qu'on l'essuie parce que quand même, il va pas se sécher tout seul ! Je veux le sentir frétiller sous la serviette et ronronner même un peu ; et puis le voir descendre de la table, avec sa démarche de danseuse et réclamer à sortir encore, alors qu'il pleut et que je viens de l'essuyer ; de quoi je me plains, c'est un honneur de recommencer ça toutes les dix minutes !

J'ai besoin de le prendre dans mes bras, de l'embrasser partout sur la tête et le sentir serein, bien posé, sentir son tout petit poids relâché, là, dans le creux de mes bras. Même qu'on ronronne un peu mais pas tant, mais je sais que chez lui c'est énorme, qu'il a appris y'a même pas si longtemps ! Parce qu'il s'arrête jamais d'apprendre à être heureux, de comment c'est d'être un petit chat ; un jour, il ira vraiment pour préférer un carton à n'importe quoi d'autre dans une pièce... En attendant il est décidé qu'il dormirait à tel endroit et puis c'est tout ! J'aurais beau le ramener dans le lit, non non, il part directement pour se mettre dans le coin le plus inconfortable de la baraque ! Vraiment sa spécialité ça, alors qu'il a cent autres endroits où se mettre, tous mille fois plus confortables que ça !

Ouais, il a encore beaucoup à apprendre ; il m'impressionne toujours autant, parce que maintenant il fait des progrès de géant ! Alors qu'il est effrayé par les gens, il parvient à leur donner sa confiance maintenant, parce qu'il me croit, parce qu'il me voit aimer et que si j'aime la personne, il peut y aller aussi ! Il a ce grand coeur qui demande que ça dans le fond, comme avec Osiris ; le supporté pas au début et finalement c'est devenu son meilleur pote, à miauler derrière lui pour être sûr qu'il rentre quand on vient ouvrir la porte, qu'on y voit que du feu à se dire que c'était Marvel et en fait non !

Je veux qu'il revienne me faire râler ; en montant sur mes épaules ou sur mes cuisses quand je suis sur le pc ; à dormir sur mes côtes la nuit, à m'obliger de me réveiller un peu pour bouger sans l'écraser ; à le tenir d'une main tout en me tournant, en râlant dans mon sommeil avant de me rendormir, tandis qu'il se réinstalle en s'en fichant bien que je râle !

J'ai oublié ce que c'est, de vivre sans lui.

Parce qu'il m'a fait vivre pour lui.

Parce qu'il a vécu pour moi.

J'ai peur que cette journée se termine. J'ai peur de me réveiller demain. J'ai peur de me dire que ça fera déjà une journée sans lui. J'ai peur. J'en veux pas, de tout ça.

Je voudrais juste retrouver sa chaleur tout contre moi.
