Chayne Gray was born in 2007 in the UK but moved with her family to Southern France at the age of 5. She has lived ever since near the city of Perpignan. She is perfectly bilingual in French and English. She has been writing and recording music using her family's equipment since 2020. Number One" is about the "dumbing down" effect the "influencer" culture seems to have on us all - where the only aspirations are to look and live like a pornstar...for a lot of younger people anyway

My Original Character 'Nephele' and Her Narrative in My Music
Since beginning my 'Nephele' project earlier this year, I've taken it upon myself as an artist to not only release sonically unique music, but a meaningful, complex story to go along with it. This post will be a deep dive into my thought process while creating the storyline.
Who is 'Nephele'?
Art depicting Greek Goddess 'Nephele' by Francie Klopotic
Nephele is a Greek cloud nymph that among other things, represents duality as well as the dark, mistrustful side of men. She was originally created by Zeus in the image of his wife, Hera, as a test for Ixion, who lusted after Hera. Later on, she was abandoned by her husband for another woman.
She was a woman created by and disposed of by men.
As such, I decided to name my character after her. My Nephele represents the dichotomy between escapism vs. reality in a young woman’s mind, brought on by society’s failure to her and the crushing hardships brought on by living under the patriarchy.
She is a 21 year old stripper and her story takes place around 1987.
She was a rebellious, troubled teenager.
She is running from her feeling of constant misplacement, struggling with the power dynamics between herself and men around her.
She is critical of the imperfect world, and as such, wields a very artistic mind.
She dreams up stories impossible to come true. Stories where she feels loved above all else, stories where she’s the heroin and the world rearranges itself to suit her needs and desires. It’s medicine to her, to numb the pain of reality.
She struggles with self-worth and self-criticism, social anxiety and depression.
Her ultimate goal is to become a star, a famous singer.
Key Inspirations for the Nephele Project
Nephele is a hopeless romantic at heart, but rather than an easy, happy love story, the ones that grip her are the tragic, heart-wrenching ones instead.
Dance of the Damned (1989) is a movie about a rather existential conversation that takes place between a suicidal stripper and an immortal vampire who wants her as his next meal. Through this movie, I was inspired by the themes of power dynamics and the idea that
Romeo and Juliet (1968) is one of my absolute favorite movies. The idea for inspiration here is that Nephele uses this movie as a basis for all of the daydreams she has about love--they are sad, dramatic, and full of passion that defies fate. Such a love is what she craves; to be wanted so badly that destiny itself is ignored in pursuit of her.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004) is another one of my all-time favorites. The inspiration taken from this movie has to do partly in the actual sound of my music as well as the characterization of Nephele's antagonist. Sonically, I really liked the dramatic string bass, the synths, and the organ used in the score for the movie, so I incorporate those elements into the songs for this project. The Phantom himself influneced the character design I created for Nephele's antagonist, a masked man named 'the Music Man', whom I will talk about in another post.
Sound Design of 'NEPHELE: Act I'
'NEPHELE: Act I' is the name of the first album in my Nephele project, which will be coming out on October 13th (a Friday for the extra spooky vibes), 2023.
I have always loved 80s music, and so that was the very foundation for the sound on this album.
In terms of specific musical inspirations, I have a mix of modern & 80s artists such as: a-ha, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Modern Talking, Lana Del Rey, The Neighbourhood, MARINA, and Billie Eilish to name a few.
Artists like The Cure and a-ha have influenced me the most in terms of sound, while Lana Del Rey (I grew up on 2013-2016 Tumblr, so of course she raised me) has inspired the way I write lyrics.
The genres that this project falls under are Synthpop, New Romantic, New Wave, Alt-Pop, Dream Pop, and Darkwave predominantly
You can see these inspirations amalgamate yourself in some of the songs I have pre-released for this album here:
'DANCE of the DAMNED' is my most recent release, and it's the fifth full song off of the upcoming 'NEPHELE: Act I' album.
I'll explain in a future post what this song in particular is about!
My Hopes for Nephele
As an artist, part of the thrill is putting your work out there for everyone to perceive. It's a scary thing to do, because your creation isn't just your own as soon as it's out in the world, and it isn't up to you how others receive it. While this admittedly intimidates me, I also find it cool. You can relate to my music and art in ways that I didn't necessarily intend, but that fit you better.
With that being said, my intentions for Nephele are that she represents a desire for something more, something better, the deep-seeded need to be loved, and the sensation of missing something unidentifiable inside.
She is a comfort character and a voice for any woman who feels incomplete, who is dissatisfied with life and who dreams of being more and being strong, who feels the weight of the world on her shoulders and want to make it a better place but feels powerless to do so.
She is a representation of the journey of self-discovery and a journey of self-mastery.
She creates a space for maladaptive, daydreaming women
She opens the conversation for why we feel the need to self-soothe through fantastical creations of art and stories.
She is a voice for the quiet girl/woman with an overactive-imagination.
If you made it to the end of this post, I thank you sincerely for caring enough to read through it all! I hope it resonated with you in some way, and that if you do decide to check my music out, it does the same!

One of the cool things about putting out a new track is discovering the work of other artists while checking the blogs and playlists that have featured my work. It’s been a while since I took such a deep dive into up-to-the-minute new music, and I’m excited to report back that it’s renewed my faith in contemporary production!! People (myself included) often complain about how hard it is to find new stuff to listen to, especially with big services like Spotify favoring “classic” tracks with their algorithm.
I made a playlist featuring my favorite new discoveries - if you’re looking for new things to listen to, maybe you want to check it out and give it a follow… I plan to update it every couple of weeks - and I have some new stuff of my own coming out soon that I’ll be adding on too so give the playlist a like/follow and keep checking back!
Shout out to the playlist artists, some of whom I know and many of whom I don’t

Hi!! I haven’t shared this on tumblr at all yet so I thought I would.
I’m a disabled, autistic singer/songwriter and I make music from my bedroom. This is my most recent song, which is all about growing up autistic, especially my experiences with the mental health system. The artwork is art I drew as a kid! It’s a song about accepting myself as autistic and it’s super important to me. I hope other neurodivergent and disabled folk like it!!!

Don't Believe In Ghosts presents: Brooklyn Baby
New York City-based alternative indie rock band Don’t Believe In Ghosts celebrates the release of their brand-new single, “Brooklyn Baby,” available today. The song, co-written and produced by Grammy-winning producer Ken Lewis (X Ambassadors, FUN.), captures the excitement, allure, and challenges faced by those who leave everything behind to chase their dreams in New York City.
Steven Nathan, the band’s lead singer and producer, shared insight into the song’s creation: “I originally wrote the demo and sent it to my good friend and Grammy winner Ken Lewis, who generously would give me some tips as I was working on a song. This time, he said, ‘Get on a plane, and let’s finish this one together.’ So we did.”
The single release comes ahead of their performance at a special charity event benefiting the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, hosted by Melyssa Murray, founder of No. 95 Candles, and Murr from Impractical Jokers. This event will be held on Saturday, November 9th, 2024, at 18 Label Studios in Montclair, NJ. Don’t Believe In Ghosts will headline the VIP after-party, performing live to support Alzheimer’s research.
The band expressed his enthusiasm for the event: “We’re beyond excited to be a part of this incredible event. When Melyssa and Murr asked us to play, we didn’t hesitate—supporting Alzheimer’s research is a cause that truly hits home for us. Being able to contribute through music and help raise funds for such important work is an honor.”
In addition, the band will return to their hometown for a special live performance at Mercury Lounge on Saturday, November 30th, 2024. This will mark their first NYC show in over a year, where fans can experience the live debut of “Brooklyn Baby” along with new music the band has been working on. Tickets for the Mercury Lounge show are now on sale.

Don’t Believe in Ghosts is an alternative rock band formed and based in New York City. Singer Steven Nathan leads the ensemble and features Dan DelVecchio on guitar and Ken Yang on drums. They are widely recognized for their breakthrough track “Put Your Head Back”, which not only featured in the AppleTV+ series “WeCrashed” starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway but also graced the show’s soundtrack. The track, mixed by the renowned Mark Needham, known for his work with ‘The Killers’ and ‘Imagine Dragons,’ has garnered extensive praise nationwide.
Steven Nathan encapsulates the band’s philosophy with the phrase, “Don’t give energy to the ghosts of your past,” emphasizing the importance of focusing on the present and moving forward without the weight of external judgments. Through their music, Don’t Believe In Ghosts continues to offer a blend of honesty, creativity, and relatable narratives, making every song not just heard, but felt.

A compelling state-of-the-art indie pop band with an eclectic New York City sound. Don't Believe in Ghosts, led by singer/producer and writer Steven Nathan, rose from his home studio in 2017. The band is rounded out by Dan DelVecchio on Guitar, Alex Goumas on Bass, and Ken Yang on Drums.
The night the world shut down in 2020, Don’t Believe In Ghosts was set to headline Brooklyn's Knitting Factory. This on the heels of two sold-out headline shows at New York City’s Iconic Bowery Ballroom and the band's first U.S. tour, 2020 was lining up to be a breakout year for the band. With touring put on hold just as the band's single "Living Like This" began taking off at radio, singer Steven Nathan and his family were dealt a direct hit as his brother Robert Nathan passed away from COVID 19.
In the spring of 2021, Don’t Believe In Ghosts signed with Imagen Records and released Solutions their debut label album on May 14th.
Currently, the band is featured in the Apple TV+ show We Crashed where they performed live in a scene. The song ‘Put Your Head Back’ is also featured in the show and on the official soundtrack.
The bands’ achievements include song features on many TV shows including Ink Master and The U.S. OPEN. Don’t Believe In Ghosts teamed up with 8-time Grammy-winning mixer Ken Lewis for their single "Don’t Wake Me Up". The song's video featured famed comedic actor Gilbert Gottfried. "Don’t Wake Me Up" earned more than one million retail and radio plays. In 2019, Don’t Believe In Ghosts sold out their first headlining show at New York City's Bowery Ballroom. In the summer of 2019, the band embarked on their first U.S. tour. "Living Like This," the band's single in 2020 quickly became their most popular, receiving hundreds of radio plays across the U.S. while the music video gained critical acclaim.
“Don’t give energy to the ghosts of your past,” says Steven Nathan when describing the meaning behind the bands' name. “Worrying about what other people may think can be draining and debilitating.” Don’t Believe In Ghosts amplifies this theme throughout their music.
