July 2019 - Paige POV
I was deep into my basketball workout, the sound of the ball echoing through the gym as I went through the drills with precision. My trainer standing by the sideline, coaching me through each movement — footwork, ball-handling, shot mechanics. I was lost in the rhythm of it all, my mind focused solely on the next move, the next shot, just as I did every offseason.
But then, something on the TV caught my attention.
The US 3x3 tournament was on — I hadn't been paying too much attention to it, but I always found time for basketball, no matter who was playing. It was in my blood. I just loved the game at all levels.
My focus slipped for a second as I looked over at the screen, noticing the score was a little close. Then I saw Azzi.
I froze, the ball bouncing softly at my side as I watched everything unfold. One minute, she was pushing through the defense, looking like she was about to make a play, and the next, she was on the floor. Her knee buckled awkwardly, and I saw her fall, immediately clutching it. The pain was clear as day on her face.
"Oh fuck," I muttered under my breath, the word escaping before I could stop it. My trainer immediately moving toward the TV to turn the volume up.
The announcers' voices filled the gym, sharp with concern. "All of a sudden there’s concern for the health of one of the best high schoolers in the country. We can only hope Azzi Fudd is able to walk out of here on her own which will be a good sign for all the viewers who I’m sure are holding their breath as this all unfolds." One said, the gravity of the situation weighing heavily in his tone.
I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the screen as Azzi stayed down, her face twisted in pain, tears welling in her eyes as the camera zoomed in on her. I hate when they do that shit.
I didn’t particularly like Azzi. She was too passive for my liking, not nearly as fiery or intense as I thought a player should be. Especially someone of her caliber. Plus she fouled the hell out of me for no reason that one time. But seeing her in that kind of pain? That wasn’t something I could enjoy. Despite all the rivalry, despite everything, I hated seeing anyone get hurt.
For all our back-and-forth, the trash talk, the competitiveness that had grown between us, I never wanted to see her hurt. She had just had an incredible season, her name up there with the best in the country — and now, it could all come crashing down in a second. This injury could change everything for her, just like that.
I was snapped out of my thoughts when my trainer asked, “You think she’s going to be ight?”
I didn’t answer right away. I just stood there, watching as they helped Azzi off the court, her face still contorted in pain as she limped off. It hit me kinda hard — this was a big deal, and despite everything that had happened on the court between us, I couldn’t help but feel for her.
“Yeah,” I muttered. "I’m sure she’ll bounce back."
After that the gym felt a little different now. The ball didn’t bounce as loudly, and the drill didn’t seem as important. All I could think about was how quickly things could change in an instant. How that could have been me. How it could still be me.
…
Later that night, laying in bed, Paige aimlessly scrolled through social media. Her feed was flooded with news of Azzi's injury. It was everywhere. All anyone seemed to be talking about was the #1 player in the class of 2021 tearing both her ACL and MCL after her incredible sophomore year. Paige had to admit, it hit her in a way she wasn’t prepared for. She had seen Azzi's growth first-hand the few times they’d played — her rise to stardom, the awards, and now, this. The thought of the rivalry they'd shared now feeling so... empty... nagged at her.
Paige knew that she’d see St. John’s again twice next year but something about the thought of no Azzi in the mix made it not as exciting. Without Azzi, there wouldn’t be any real competition left. Their games had been some of the most intense, back-and-forth battles she’d ever played in, and now that felt like it was over. There was no way Azzi would be back before the playoffs next year.
Paige’s fingers hovered over her phone screen as her mind wandered. She didn’t know why she was doing this, but she found herself scrolling through her contacts, looking for Azzi's number. They’d played together on the U16 team and Paige had everyone’s number from the team saved after they insisted on having a groupchat. She tapped it and paused, unsure of what to say, knowing if she was in Azzi’s shoes no words would ease whatever she was feeling. Still she sent a message anyway.
You'll bounce back. It's just a setback Fudd.
She stared at the message, fingers hovering for a moment before hitting send. She didn’t expect a response. What was she even doing? Azzi probably didn’t even want to hear from her, they didn’t even like each other. But it felt wrong to just leave it at that — to not acknowledge what Azzi was going through. She knew the girl after all.
With a heavy sigh, Paige set her phone down and went to brush her teeth to get ready for bed. She didn’t really expect a response back.
But when she returned, phone in hand, her screen illuminated, signaling a new notification.
Thank you, means a lot.
Paige typed a quick reply: Anytime.
Then she put her phone on the nightstand, settling into bed as she turned on a WNBA game.
November 2019
Azzi sat at the end of the bench, her leg throbbing slightly beneath the brace, trying to make sense of the game she’d just watched. Her team had been outclassed from the jump, and without her on the floor, it felt like they had no chance. Paige of course had been unstoppable—37 points, and the craziest part was, she didn’t touch the floor the whole fourth quarter. It was almost embarrassing to watch.
When the buzzer finally rang, signaling the end of the game, Azzi’s shoulders slumped and she sighed in relief that it was over. She didn’t even look at the scoreboard; it didn’t matter. She stayed seated as her teammates lined up to shake hands with the Gonzaga players. The energy in the gym was deflated—everyone had known the outcome was a foregone conclusion the moment the game tipped off.
As Azzi adjusted her knee brace and slowly stood up, she was surprised to see Paige walking toward her.
The other players from Gonzaga hadn’t thought to come over and shake her hand, but Paige didn’t hesitate. She offered Azzi a quick high five, her face a mix of competitiveness and something else. Azzi raised an eyebrow, taken aback by the gesture but unwilling to show any emotion to the blonde in front of her.
Paige’s voice was light, almost teasing. “What’s that, 4-1 now, Fudd?”
Azzi couldn’t help but scoff. “You didn’t talk shit the whole game,” she said, eyes narrowing. “You just had to come over here and ruin it, didn't you?”
Paige laughed, a playful glint in her eyes. As she turned to walk away, she tossed over her shoulder, “No comp to talk shit to on the court that’s all.”
Azzi watched her go, a mix of annoyance and begrudging admiration in her chest. Paige had a way of making things look easy, and even though Azzi hated it and hated how she acted, she couldn’t deny it—Paige was damn good.
March 2020 - Paige’s POV
I was sitting on the edge of my bed, my head in my hands, stomach in knots. My phone sat next to me, buzzing with more notifications I couldn’t bring myself to check. The championship game we’d worked so damn hard for, the perfect season we’d earned — all of it, gone. Just like that.
CoVid-19 had canceled the last game, and I couldn’t wrap my mind around it. It felt like a bad dream. The end of my high school career. Just like that, like a snap of a few fingers. Kind of funny how life is in that way.
We had been unstoppable. Undefeated. We were supposed to go out on top. I was supposed to walk off that court with my teammates, with that championship trophy, the culmination of all the hard work and sacrifice after losing last year. But now, it was all over, and I was left with nothing but this empty feeling in my chest.
It felt wrong, especially after the season I’d had. Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year. Gatorade National Player of the Year. Naismith Prep Player of the Year. Morgan Wootten National Player of the Year. I was on the cover of SLAM, for fucks sake. A McDonald’s All-American. I was supposed to play in the Jordan Brand Classic. The championship with my team was supposed to be the last piece of the puzzle. And now it was just... taken from me. From all of us.
I wasn’t the only one feeling it, but that didn’t make it any easier. My teammates were crushed, too. We all were. We’d worked for this. We had dreams about our comeback season, and now they were dashed. I just couldn’t understand how everything had unraveled so quickly.
It wasn’t just about the game, though. It was everything that came with it. The way everything seemed to be falling into place too quickly. My future at UConn was waiting, but it felt like the rug had been pulled out from under me before I was ready. All of a sudden, the world felt uncertain even though I knew exactly where I was headed for the next four years.
I tried not to think about the stuff I’d lose, like the last game I was supposed to play, the players I was supposed to compete against, and the milestones I was supposed to hit with my team. Instead, I kept thinking about what was next.
The only thing I could do right now was work. There was no championship trophy to hold, no fans to cheer for me, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t still prepare.
So, I grabbed my shoes and headed to the gym. I knew there was no real closure here. Not right now, so it was pointless to get in my feelings about it. Pointless to sit around and be sad. There was still a season ahead of me, more basketball to play. College was waiting now.
…
The gym was quiet except for the sound of basketballs bouncing. Paige was working through her shots, focused as she tested her range and worked on different combo moves. She wasn’t expecting company, everything was shut down. Her thoughts were elsewhere—on the future, not on what had been taken from her. The weight of losing her senior season to the pandemic still hung over her, though she didn’t let it show in her work.
Then, she heard the faint sound of footsteps behind her. She pulled off her headphones and turned around, surprised to see Azzi standing there. It had been about seven months since Azzi’s knee injury, and seeing her standing there in person was different from seeing her in a game. The two of them never really spoke outside of playing one another, and the awkwardness of the situation wasn’t lost on either of them.
Azzi paused when their eyes met. “My bad, didn’t know anyone was here,” she said, clearly about to turn and leave. The gym was small and only half a court and she didn’t want to deal with whatever Paige had to say today.
Paige shook her head in disagreement, clearly not phased by her presence. “It’s cool. You don’t need to leave.”
Azzi hesitated before nodding and walking over to the bench, sitting down to put on her basketball shoes. Paige returned to shooting. Once Azzi had finished getting ready, she stood up, stretched, and grabbed a ball. Paige was still shooting when she glanced over taking off her headphones again.
“How’s the knee?” Paige asked before she could stop herself, looking down at the black sleeve covering Azzi’s right leg. Her voice broke the silence, and Azzi looked at her, surprised by the blonde speaking to her.
“It’s a work in progress,” Azzi replied, her tone softer than Paige had ever heard. It was clear she was still recovering, but she didn’t seem too eager to talk about it.
Paige simply hummed in response, turning back to the basket. Neither of them said much after that.
Paige continued to go through her drills as Azzi worked on her shots, most of them swishing effortlessly through the net, though she was missing more than usual. Paige, focused as always, didn’t really think too much about what the other girl had going on. After a while of silence, Azzi turned to her.
“Congrats on all your awards, by the way,” Azzi said, her voice genuine, even if it came out a little unexpectedly and awkwardly. Paige nodded, briefly acknowledging it with a half smile. There wasn’t much more to say—her accomplishments had all come in a season that felt incomplete, and she didn’t really wanna think about that right now.
Then, on a rebound, Azzi’s ball went a little further than expected, and Paige jogged to retrieve it, having been closer as she was getting some water. Azzi watched her and when Paige came back, she passed Azzi the ball without a word.
That was the turning point. Instead of keeping to their separate routines, they began to shoot together. Azzi rebounded for Paige, and Paige did the same for Azzi. They moved around the court, each shot a natural rhythm as they stepped into the pass. The way they moved, the way they passed and shot, was effortless, like they had done this a thousand times before. Neither said a word as they shot, they were just happy to not have to run after their own rebound every two seconds. The ease between them told a story of mutual respect even though it was usually clear they weren’t too fond of each other.
The silence between them stretched on as Paige and Azzi continued to shoot. The rhythm of their movements, the swish of the net, and the soft thud of the ball bouncing were the only sounds filling the gym. They both seemed absorbed in their own thoughts as they passed the ball back and forth.
After some time, Paige’s phone kept buzzing so she glanced at the clock. She had been there longer than she’d planned, and she remembered telling Drew she’d take him to the movies. So she reluctantly made her way to the bench to take off her basketball shoes even though she hadn’t cleared her mind like she hoped. Azzi was still shooting, focused and intent, as if the ball and the hoop were the only things that mattered.
Paige bent down to untie her shoes, glancing up as she did. Azzi missed another shot, and the ball rolled off to the side. Paige grabbed it without thinking, tossing it back to Azzi with a casual flick of her wrist.
As the ball landed back in Azzi’s hands, Paige couldn’t help but notice the slight hesitation in Azzi’s movements, the way she seemed to favor her left leg a bit. Azzi took a moment before shooting again, but the ball missed again, clanging off the rim and bouncing awkwardly as the girl groaned in frustration.
Paige stood up, grabbing her shoes from the ground as she spoke. “You’re favoring your left side when you shoot now,” she said, her voice calm but observant. “That’s why your shot’s not falling. You gotta trust that your knee will be fine.”
Azzi paused, the ball resting in her hands as she processed the comment. Paige could see the wheels turning in Azzi’s mind, the realization slowly dawning on her. She didn’t reply, but Paige noticed the way she shifted her weight as she took a second shot, more thoughtfully this time as it went through the net.
Paige didn't linger, just headed toward the door. Azzi didn’t say anything more either, lost in her thoughts as she continued to shoot.
November 2020
Azzi had been wrestling with the decision for weeks. The pressure to commit was everywhere, with coaches, family, and even fans weighing in with their opinions. Narrowing her choices to UCLA, Maryland, and UConn had been easy enough—each school had its appeal.
Maryland offered familiarity. The hometown hero story would mean playing in front of her family and friends, building a legacy close to home. UCLA? Well, their facilities were out of this world, and the program was on the rise and it would be nice to be the player who brought them to the top. But UConn... UConn was something else entirely.
The school was synonymous with greatness. Azzi had grown up dreaming of wearing that blue and white jersey, playing under Geno Auriemma, and being part of a dynasty, of being a husky. There was no denying the opportunity to grow under one of the best coaches in basketball history.
But there was a large problem. Paige.
Azzi had only crossed paths with Paige a handful of times during their games, but each interaction had left a bad taste in her mouth. Paige Bueckers was an undeniable talent, but her confidence often read as arrogance. The way Paige carried herself—with that smirk and cocky demeanor—rubbed Azzi the wrong way every time. Could she really spend years as a teammate to someone who seemed so self-absorbed? She couldn’t imagine having to share the court with the girl let alone the ball that she would probably never pass to Azzi.
Azzi turned the thought over and over in her mind day after day, replaying memories of Paige’s antics during games, her posturing, the way the media fawned over her, the way she soaked it in. It was irritating. Still, Azzi decided she couldn’t let one person dictate her future. This was her dream, her opportunity to compete at the highest level, to win championships.
When Azzi made her commitment to UConn public, she felt a weight lift off her shoulders. The decision was made, and she was ready to face whatever came next—even Paige and all of her bullshit.
A couple of states away in Connecticut, Paige sat scrolling through her phone in the gym when the news broke. A tweet caught her eye, and as she opened it, her jaw nearly hit the floor.
"DMV’s Azzi Fudd, 2021 #1 Recruit Commits to University of Connecticut"
Paige stared at the screen, rereading the headline as if it would change. Her eyebrows shot up, and her eyes bulged in disbelief.
“What the fuck” Paige muttered to herself.
December 2020
During high school winter break Geno organized Azzi to come on a visit to meet the team before her official arrival. The visist had been going smoothly—almost perfectly, in fact. The facilities were incredible, Geno’s warmth and charisma made her feel valued, and the team seemed thrilled to have her there. Everything felt right. Everything except the glaring absence of Paige Bueckers.
It wasn’t like Azzi had come to the visit just to ‘officially’ meet Paige, but it would’ve been nice. Paige was clearly the face of the program now, the freshman star everyone raved about. If they were going to be teammates, Azzi figured they’d at least cross paths before she officially got to campus the upcoming summer. But so far, Paige had been conspicuously absent from all the introductions, the tour, and now the relaxed hangout in the dorm's common area.
The team was great, though. Christyn and Olivia, two of the team’s upperclassmen had gone out of their way to make Azzi feel comfortable, sharing stories about what it was like to play under Geno. Christyn was particularly funny, throwing in sarcastic comments about Olivia’s sometimes over-the-top pregame rituals.
Aaliyah, Nika, Saylor, and Piath—some of the freshmen—were a mix of energy and chaos. Nika’s personality was magnetic; she was constantly cracking jokes and pulling Azzi into the group’s banter. Aaliyah had a quieter, grounded presence, offering up thoughtful questions and laughing at Nika’s antics. Saylor and Piath added their own flair, with Saylor occasionally teasing Nika for her over-the-top expressions and Piath keeping things calm when the group got a little rowdy.
Then there was Aubrey, who was nestled between the older and younger players. She had an easygoing vibe, but there was something quietly sharp about her observations and she didn’t seem to talk much. But as the night wore on, Aubrey began to loosen up a bit and was leaning in to share a few inside jokes about the team dynamics here and there.
“You’ll like it here,” Aubrey said, nudging Azzi with her elbow. “Well, once you get used to all the chaos… and Paige.”
The mention of Paige brought the blonde’s absence into sharper focus. Azzi glanced toward the only closed door in the suite, making her assume it was Paige’s. Azzi had heard what sounded like the same game replaying over and over since she’d been in the suite coming from behind the closed door. She hadn’t thought much of it earlier, but now it felt a little deliberate that she hadn’t come out yet.
Evina noticed Azzi’s glance and sighed. “I’ll go get her,” she said, standing up and walking toward Paige’s door.
Before she could get there and knock, the door swung open. Paige emerged in a whirlwind, a granola bar clamped between her teeth, headphones slung around her neck, her phone in one hand, and her basketball shoes in the other.
“Hey, P,” Evina said, trying to stop her. “Come hang out for a bit. Azzi’s here.”
Paige grunted, barely making eye contact. “Can’t. Played like ass yesterday,” she mumbled around the granola bar before walking past everyone and out of the suite.
Azzi scoffed, unable to hold it in. It was hard not to take it personally. She didn’t know Paige well, but her quick exit felt more like an insult than anything else.
“No, don't take offense,” Evina said, noticing Azzi’s reaction. “Paige is… well, she’s Paige. You’ll get to know her. She’d live in the gym if we let her. Trust me, it’s not about you.”
Aubrey snorted from her spot on the couch. “Yeah I lost a bet and had to drag her out of there twice this week. First time, I turned the lights off. She didn’t even notice, or didn’t care. She just kept shooting until she got tired of me messing with her music and walked out.”
Azzi raised an eyebrow. “And the second time?”
“Had to practically carry her out,” Aubrey said with a laugh. “She gave up eventually, but only because I promised her Nika wouldn’t eat all the protein bars anymore.”
“I don’t eat all of them!” Nika protested loudly, drawing laughter from the group.
Azzi chuckled slightly but her irritation still lingered. Sure, Paige might be obsessive about basketball, but her absence still felt pointed with Azzi knowing the older girl didn’t like her. Azzi decided to ignore it though and as the night wore on, the team’s easy camaraderie pulled her in, and Azzi found herself genuinely liking everyone. Even looking forward to being here in the summer.
But Paige’s absence hung over everything, making it hard for Azzi to fully relax. When it got close to midnight and Paige still hadn’t returned, Nika, Aubrey, and Evina began debating who should go to the gym this time.
“I went twice already!” Aubrey said, throwing her hands up. “I’m not doing it again. I’d rather wrestle Olivia’s big ass for the remote.”
“You didn’t even try last yesterday,” Nika teased. “You just texted her and gave up and I had to go eventually.”
“Yeah, because she’s a weirdo when she’s like this.”
Evina groaned, standing up. “Fine shut up. I’ll go.”
Azzi watched as Evina grabbed her keys and headed out, her frustration bubbling to the surface again.
About thirty minutes later, the door to the suite swung open, and Evina stepped in, followed by a very irritated Paige. Azzi immediately noticed the tension as Paige, her hair sticking slightly to her forehead from sweat, strode in mid-sentence.
“It’s not that big of a fucking deal, E,” Paige muttered, clearly continuing a heated discussion the two had been having on their way back.
“It is a big deal,” Evina shot back, her voice calm but firm. “And you’re going to handle it. Now.”
Paige groaned dramatically, tossing her basketball shoes onto the floor by her room before following Evina inside. The door shut behind them, and for a brief moment, the suite was quiet.
Then came the muffled sounds of what was unmistakably yelling. Azzi wasn’t sure whether Paige or Evina was louder, but she could hear enough to piece together that Evina was getting on Paige about something.
The team, meanwhile, carried on as if this was perfectly normal, as if it was their routine. Aaliyah was fiddling with the remote trying to find a game, Aubrey was scrolling through her phone, and Christyn and Olivia were engaged in a debate over which snack brand had the best pretzels.
Eventually, the noise from Paige’s room stopped, and a few moments later, Evina emerged, her expression relaxed and a victorious smile playing on her lips. “She’ll be out soon,” she announced, as if this was some kind of accomplishment.
True to her word, a while later, Paige reappeared. She had swapped her clothes for a loose hoodie and joggers, her wet hair thrown over her shoulders. She glanced at Azzi, her blue eyes softening slightly.
“Hey,” Paige said, offering a small, almost sheepish smile. “Sorry for missing most of your visit. Welcome to UConn Azzi.”
Evina, leaning casually against the kitchen counter, watched the interaction with a knowing grin, as though she’d personally orchestrated this rare moment of civility.
Azzi blinked, caught off guard by Paige’s shift in demeanor. She nodded, her response clipped but polite. “It’s all good.”
Paige didn’t seem to notice Azzi’s hesitation—or if she did, she didn’t care. She flopped down onto the couch between Nika and Olivia with an exaggerated sigh, stretching her legs out and leaning her head against Nika’s shoulder.
“Welcome back to the land of the living twin,” Nika greeted her, her voice light and teasing.
Paige tilted her head, giving Nika a look that Azzi couldn’t quite decipher. It was like an entire conversation passed between them in a single expression. Nika burst out laughing, shaking her head as she nudged Paige playfully, making the blonde crack a smile as she leaned back on Nika’s shoulder.
The casual interaction threw Azzi off. For someone who’d seemed so intense and standoffish earlier, Paige was now practically melting into Nika. It was… strange.
Nika, Azzi had learned over the course of the evening, was one of the sweetest and most outgoing members of the team, always cracking jokes and making people feel included. On the surface, she and Paige couldn’t have been more different, yet here they were, leaning on each other like lifelong best friends.
Before Azzi could think too much about it, Christyn, who had been munching on a bag of chips, reached into the cabinet and tossed two protein bars at Paige, hitting her square in the chest.
“Eat,” Christyn ordered, her tone casual but firm. Paige barely reacted, opening one of the bars and shoving a piece of it in her mouth without a word.
Azzi couldn’t help but notice the dynamic. It was almost as if it was second nature for everyone to take care of Paige. Dragging her out of the gym, making sure she ate, looking out for her even when she seemed pissy about it.
It was strange to witness but oddly endearing picking up on how much they cared about each other. Azzi still wasn’t sure how Paige fit into the easygoing, tight-knit vibe of the rest of the team, but seeing her now—grumbling about snacks while slouching into Nika’s shoulder—it was clear there was more to her than Azzi had originally thought.
Azzi had planned to be the bigger person today and put all their bad blood to the side. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that Paige had been avoiding her, and it left a sour taste, so she kept her mouth shut.

canucks management can claim that petey isn’t injured all they want, and they can leak info to reporters to corroborate this message as well, but that doesn’t make it believable.
keep in mind that during this regime’s tenure we’ve had jason dickinson play nearly an entire season with a broken hand that he didn’t know was broken until he was traded, demko play through a knee issue that resulted in a groin issue (back in 2022-2023), mikheyev play much of a season on an acl that he tore in training camp before ultimately having a season-ending surgery (he said it was his decision but if you as a medical staff are letting a player do that then???), and botched tanner pearson’s hand injury so badly that quinn hughes himself said that he thought it was mishandled. arguably, they rushed demko back before the playoffs last april, which is how a knee injury ended up as the first-ever nhl popliteus injury.
remember in late 2021 when pettersson wasn’t playing as well as usual and lots of people thought he looked injured? and everyone denied it? and then it turned out that he’d had a wrist injury? lol!!!!
pettersson’s current performance issues started around feb 2024. he said himself that his knee started becoming painful in january and kept getting worse from that point. in training camp, he admitted that he had to train around his knee in the offseason. given the weird situations that have happened under the canucks’ medical staff, why exactly would canucks fans look at petey (who very clearly isn’t moving as well as he used to), look at his skating data (which proves that he isn’t moving as well as he used to), listen to what the player personally has said, and think “idk he probably just doesn’t try hard enough anymore”?
add in that canucks management apparently were unhappy that he had been honest about his knee at the end of last season (iain macintyre said this in a canucks central postgame show fairly recently — i believe after the miller trade?) and i just quite simply have zero reason to believe that they’ve handled this situation well.
maybe his knee isn’t really injured anymore — maybe — but even if that’s the case, it is so difficult for players to build up strength during the season that they didn’t have going into the season, and we know he had to train around his knee this summer. personally, i just sincerely hope that all this public tough love, criticism, urges to “move his feet,” etc. aren’t the only thing that management/coaching are saying to petey in private, but they seem to have some “back in my day we’d play through an amputated foot if we had to!!!” tendencies to them.

lmao anon i love you thank you because i was literally just typing a post up by itself. but now i get the benefit of looking like i'm not the ONLY person to care about this. (there's at least two of us!!)
ok so! too much rambling about things that i could no way actually know anything about irl BUT
kyle and ja’marr being together in paris is VERY interesting to me. their whole relationship is really because like. okay. i have joked that kyle and ja’marr are there to pick out joe’s wardrobe for next year together lmao but like!!! the clothes saga is SUCH a thing with ja’marr. the man has a Complex about joe and fashion and his part in it. we know this. i hardly need to go over the clothes saga with y’all again. but i will because it’s fun for me. ja’marr claims in GQ that he buys clothes for joe all the time and drops them off at 'the house’ for him. which is insane enough if that’s true. then a few days after that article drops (and also joe’s appendix explodes) he says nah never mind i was lying! (“kinda”). and that’s insane too. but whatever, we let it go, there’s football to play. then that offseason tee decides to cause some chaos i guess and confirms that actually ja’marr HAS bought joe clothes ‘multiple times’ so that’s. something!!! (along with TB in that one pivot podcast with all three of them teasing ja’marr about it!!) and then SOMEHOW none of this gets brought up again until a few months ago when ja’marr is just like “yeah actually i’ve been buying him clothes since last year” which is still a year later than he first said he bought him clothes 🤔
ALL OF WHICH TO SAY that ja’marr is fucking weird about this. he may or may not buy joe clothes (i’m still leaning yes on this), and he may or may not want people to know about it. i think he realizes just how intimate of a thing that is, to repeatedly buy someone you care about clothes that you think he would like, that you’d like to see him in. and i think if we go back to my Vision of insecure at times ja’marr, it’s one way to explain his back and forth on this.
but then!! insert kyle, who i believe only became joe’s stylist within the last year. before that i don’t think joe ever really had anyone Official to help him out with specific outfits/styles/branding etc (i’m sure the joe girlies will correct me if i'm wrong on this). and now i can only imagine that ja’marr might be feeling a little…possessive of joe here (what else is new lol ‘that’s my qb not their qb’ type shit). like if we believe he’s been buying him clothes since at least 2021, that’s like…that’s ja’marr’s Thing at this point?? even if it only started happening in 2023, that’s still a long time of "oh hey i saw this and thought of you and will you wear it and when you wear it will i feel a little thrill knowing that you took my advice knowing that you value my opinion knowing that the clothes touching your skin are only doing so because i bought them for you in the first place etc etc." and now here’s joe paying someone else to do it?? and who the fuck is kyle why him why does HE get to do it he didn’t even win a national championship with him in college???? (ja’marr obviously would be more rational than that. of course joe should pay someone to help him out with style as he does events and builds his brand more. but as a fellow Emotional Person myself, the rational response is never the first or strongest one.)
so like! there’s that. that alone could make ja’marr not inclined to LOVE Kyle, ya know? and then if we want to get really Deep and dive into internalized homophobia of Male Athlete Culture. of my version (MY VERSION JUST MY VERSION THIS IS NOT ME SAYING ANYTHING IRL ABOUT HIM) of ja’marr and how he might cope with feelings and attractions that do not neatly fall in line with what is Expected of him and Has Been Expected of him since he was a kid. like fuck. do we remember how his dad said ja’marr used to like to read with his cousins (who were girls) but then his male friends came around and made fun of him for it, so he stopped reading altogether as a child?? thinking about that still makes my heart hurt! aughhh Gender!! and then even a few weeks ago on stream when ja’marr accidentally said that kyrie was sexy and IMMEDIATELY the chat and his friends jumped on him for it!! like yeah it was all lighthearted and all that but he got all embarrassed and even fucking apologized??? just the immediate policing of language/behavior followed by the immediate apology and moving on to no longer watching kyrie clips lol. crazy!!! Male Athlete Culture is SUCH a trip!!
and kyle is gay! very much out and proud and not hiding or ashamed of any of it (fucking good for him tbh. i know he’s not Loved in this fandom but like that does genuinely take guts to be yourself like that in a culture like this. and make a career out of it! and he seems to be thriving!) and i just have to wonder like, how many queer people ja’marr really knows well?? the nfl has their corporate pride month bullshit where they celebrate the like 1 out gay assisant coach? 1 out gay FORMER player? if there are more queer people in the nfl, they are not very public about it. so again, how much daily interaction does a typical football player like ja’marr get with queer people?? i do imagine all the connections that are growing with the fashion world help of course! like kyle! who it’s clear he’s at least friendly with, if not the best of friends. and so like, i wonder about how that could stir complicated emotions in ja’marr if we go with my (AGAIN JUST MINE I’M NOT ACTUALLY SAYING ANYTHING IRL) version of him as a guy who has Feelings about male teammates sometimes and struggles with Dealing With That.
and throw in the fact that ja’marr primarily knows him as this guy who’s always hanging around joe lol. taking over his role as joe’s personal stylist?? being free and open and ALLOWED to be attracted to all these guys, to joe himself!! (and if he thinks too hard about that he REALLY gets in his feelings). and it’s not jealousy really because he knows how important he himself is in joe’s life. kyle’s not replacing their history, he’s certainly not replacing his value to joe on the field, their close friendship, etc. but! he occupies a space in joe’s life that ja’marr can’t touch. he can publicly and proudly buy joe clothes. something that ja’marr WANTS but keeps shying away from. he can feel any feelings and any attraction he happens to have, he’s not hiding any part of who he is. if he thinks joe’s hot, if he thinks joe looks particularly attractive in an outfit he chose for him, he can! he will! he does! and i think that that just HAS to drive ja’marr a little fucking crazy.
so yeah. he likes the guy. they’re friendly. he’ll do a goofy lil dance when prompted by him for social media. but it’s Complicated. it’s Very Complicated. (to me.)
#once again obligatory 'you are following a crazy person' warning#also lmao i am aware that kyle has a tumblr but i blocked it on the day we all found out about that#so he shouldn't be able to see any of this thank god#but just in case i'm not using any Full Names in the tags and if you rb i'd ask that you don't either#but i will tag it as#joe'marr#since it is kind of that. adjacently. and now i can find it again if i need to for whatever reason lol#ANYWAY though. yeah. shit's wild.#i dunno i kind of had been thinking about all this already#and then when kyle grabbed his shoulder ja'marr turned and obliged with a lil dance#but there was no Warmth like there usually is in those eyes lmao#(which could easily be explained by he was bored/distracted/etc. but. instead i did all this. so!)#hope y'all enjoy if you get through all that. i didn't know i had /quite/ that many feelings about it actually lol

September 11, 2021
Hayden walked through the arena for the banquet before the season started and before training even started.
The banquet is supposed to be more formal so Hayden has on a pair of tan trousers, a brown off the shoulder top and brown high top converse, with her hair down straight.
She walked into the giant room in the arena that the team turned into the banquet, she saw many of her teammates already there and a few new faces.
Hayden immediately walked over to Lauren and Connor who were standing with Leon and Celeste.
“Hayden Darling!” Lauren beamed immediately once she saw Hayden walking over to them.
Hayden only got into Edmonton late last night so she hasn’t seen any of them yet.
Lauren immediately pulled Hayden into a tight hug having missed her like crazy over the off season. Lauren and Connor haven’t been able to Hayden during an off season yet besides at the award ceremony.
Hayden smiled back and eagerly hugged Lauren back.
Lauren pulled back firm the hug and smiled at Hayden’s outfit as she had bought it for her, “Congrats Hayden for receiving the A.” Lauren proudly congratulated her again.
“Congrats Hayden!!!” Celeste happily congratulated Hayden again.
Hayden smiled at the two in thanks and hugged Celeste back.
“Hey Leo.” Hayden grinned once she let go of Celeste.
Leon smiled fondly and pulled her into a hug, “Hi Mäuschen.”
Connor waited patiently for his turn to say hi to one of his favorite people, “Hey Rook.” Connor fondly greeted as he hugged her.
“I’m not a rookie.” Hayden playfully protested mumbling in the hug but she knew she was never losing the nickname.
Connor just smiled having no plans to ever stop calling her that.
“Oh have you met Zach yet?” Connor asked Hayden when they pulled away from each other and Hayden shook her head no.
Zach had been traded to the Oilers in the offseason.
“Come on let’s go find him.” Connor walked away with Hayden as Connor brought them over to Zach, who was with his wife and their son talking to both Ryan’s and Ryan H wife.
“Zach!“ Connor called out making the group with Zach turn toward Hayden and Connor, “Zach this Hayden.” Connor introduced them.
“It’s nice to meet you!” Zach kindly spoke to his new teammate shaking his hand.
“Nice to meet you too!” Hayden himself replied back her eyes flickering the young boy curiously.
Zach smiled as he noticed her glance, “This is Theo our son he’s almost a year old and my wife Alannah.” Zach proudly introduced his family.
Hayden shared a smile with Alannah but her attention was focused on the young boy who was in his moms arms staring at Hayden curiously, Theo reached out a hand and Hayden out her hand out and he grabbed her finger smiling.
Zach and Alannah shared a smiling look because Theo is usually more shy with strangers.
Ryan moved over to stand next to his best friend and bumped her gently being mindful that a baby is holding her finger.
Bre and Ryan both smiled seeing Hayden and said their hellos to her as Hayden’s finger was being stolen by the baby.
Zach was actually really excited to be able to play with Hayden he thought it is incredible what Hayden has accomplished and really admired what Hayden is doing in the league.
Eventually after a little while of the four just chatting as Theo happily held onto Hayden’s finger he slowly fell asleep and let go of her hand.
Hayden and Connor said bye with Ryan coming with them as they headed back to Lauren, Celeste and Leon seeing them sitting down at a table with the Nurse’s. Lauren and Celeste seemed to be cooing over the baby.
Hayden gave a small hug to Mikayla and Darnell before sitting down with Ryan and Leon next to her and looking over at the baby, Aiden curiously who was currently in Lauren’s arms.
Aiden was born only shortly after their season ended but everyone had headed home already so the team haven’t met him yet.
“Wanna hold him?” Mikayla offered the younger girl seeing Hayden looking at her son.
Hayden slowly nodded, she really hasn’t been around a lot of small children and hasn’t really ever held a baby before.
Lauren gently set Aiden in Hayden’s arms and it was natural as Hayden held Aiden absolutely perfect, “Is this correct?” Hayden asked not taking her eyes off the baby.
“You’re holding him perfect.” Mikayla reassured sharing a soft look with Celeste and Lauren. Hayden looked absolutely adorable with the baby in her arms.
Lauren of course took a few sneaky photos as Hayden held Aiden.
“He’s adorable.” Hayden softly spoke smiling gently at the baby who was watching her curiously.
“He’s all Mik.” Darnell smiled fondly at his youngest teammate holding his first born son. He was telling the truth, Aiden is an identical copy to Mikayla.
“Hayden look up for me.” Mikayla asked softly holding up her phone to take picture of Hayden holding Aiden.
Hayden smiled at the camera holding Aiden gently but firmly in her arms.
Hayden focused back on Aiden completely after the picture and did not even realize dinner was being served until Mikayla offered to take him back so Hayden could eat.
“It’s okay you can eat i can hold him.” Hayden kindly reassured knowing Mikayla and Darnell probably don’t get a lot of warm meals because someone has to watch the baby and she did not mind waiting so they get to both eat their food warm.
Mikayla flashed a relieved look and a thankful smile at Hayden, it still surprises her at times how truly kind Hayden is to everyone.
Aiden made a cooing sound making Hayden awe softly and he sucked on her hand making her laugh glad she had washed her hands before she saw either of the babies.
Hayden just held Aiden in her arms for the rest of the event sneaking a few bites of food in but really to caring because he had her full attention the entire time.
“Aunty Hayden.” Lauren smiled as she watched Hayden and knew Hayden was going to become every child of the Oiler’s now and future favorite.
Mikayla and Celeste smiled agreeing with Lauren, Hayden is going to be an amazing Aunt as she already is with Aiden and she just met him.
“Aunty Hayden.” Mikayla agreed knowing that’s what her son will call Hayden.

woof juicy news day for us pens fans. not only do we have sidney crosby’s Seduction of kyle dubas, now we have this article on Why Hextall Sucks (and how he pissed off even sidney crosby) + some angsty Geno details that i will only relish now that he’s still with us:
Early last summer, at his spacious home in Montreal, Kris Letang finally saw the document that secured his future in Pittsburgh.
No stranger to the multi-page, standard player contract, this one was particularly special. It was his fourth, and probably his last. It contained specific elements Letang and his agent required. One line read “six years.” Another read “$36.6 million.” The line that Letang really loved?: “full no-movement clause.”
Together, those words recommitted Letang and the Penguins, the only NHL franchise he had ever known. At 35, he would finish his career in Pittsburgh.
As word spread last July 7, Letang’s phone blew up. The flood of well-wishers included teammates past and present, various Penguins personnel he’d befriended over his previous 16 seasons, and family and friends. He took only a few calls. Among them: Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, his oldest and dearest teammates in Pittsburgh, who were thrilled for him.
Crosby, the Penguins captain and franchise icon, had made it clear to general manager Ron Hextall and president of hockey operations Brian Burke as far back as the 2021 offseason that he wanted the team to re-sign impending free agents Letang and Malkin so the three veterans and lifetime Penguins could take another shot at a Stanley Cup together.
Would Crosby pressure ownership to sign Malkin and Letang? “I’ve never wanted to be GM,” Crosby said. “I think they know how I feel.”
While the negotiations with Letang took longer and were more difficult than expected, Hextall’s discussions with Malkin had turned dark. Only days before the start of free agency last summer, Letang, Crosby and coach Mike Sullivan worked overtime trying to calm Malkin, who was stewing over lowball early contract offers, limited communication with Hextall and veiled public shots from Burke.
“How bad is it?” Letang asked Crosby about the state of Malkin’s emotions and the negotiations.
“Pretty bad,” Crosby said.
Hextall first irritated Malkin late in the 2021-22 season by offering a short-term contract extension to his agent, J.P. Barry. In the offseason that animosity built as weeks passed without a follow-up conversation from Hextall. On June 17, Hextall told Barry that the team’s offer was “take-it-or-leave-it,” and the next day Burke used those words to characterize the negotiations during multiple media interviews. Not surprisingly, Malkin, a sure Hall-of-Famer, went from annoyed to insulted.
For weeks leading up to and after Letang’s deal was finalized, Malkin stewed at home while Crosby, Letang and Sullivan checked in with him from afar. With no deal in sight, Malkin began speaking to his small inner circle as if his time with the Penguins was concluding.
Hextall fielded daily questions from Fenway Sports Group brass about why Malkin hadn’t yet been re-signed. Hextall was also taken aback by the barrage of calls and texts — from Penguins alternate governor Dave Beeston, from Crosby and Sullivan, from president of business operations Kevin Acklin — after reports surfaced that Malkin would test free agency. He told his agent he wanted to “show Hextall and Burke” by trying the open market.
Malkin had joked during the ’21-22 season that he was “a rich guy,” insisting he didn’t need to worry about money on his next contract. He was having a laugh, but was also somewhat serious. He had taken less than market value on two previous deals with the Penguins and expected that trend to continue on his final NHL contract.
He was about to turn 36. He wanted to play until he was 40. He sought a contract with a no-trade clause. But more than money, he needed the Penguins to show they really wanted him, something he felt was lacking, especially from Hextall. By July 11, 2022, Malkin was convinced he’d already practiced in Cranberry for the last time.
After tucking in their son, Nikita, Malkin and his wife, Anna, sat on their leather couch and looked at a summary sheet of Hextall’s latest offer: four seasons, $24.4 million total, a full no-movement clause.
Malkin was fine with what he read. The sticking point was his bruised feelings.
“They not think I good player,” Malkin wrote in a text message to Crosby.
“They not want me,” Malkin texted to Letang, who had stepped up efforts to console Malkin after signing his deal.
Malkin wanted to stay in Pittsburgh, but he no longer trusted either Hextall or Burke. Crosby and Sullivan intervened. Each spent hours on the phone with Malkin as July 11 became July 12. Careful not to tell him what to do, Crosby and Sullivan implored Malkin to “not worry about those guys” — Hextall and Burke — when making a final decision. Letang, too, jumped into the mix. Together, two-thirds of the Big Three and their coach brought up every special moment, funny story and great time they could remember to remind Malkin what they had built in Pittsburgh. Malkin paced from room to room at his condo in Fisher Island, finally beginning to feel wanted again.
As early morning shifted to late afternoon, Malkin had heard enough to make a decision. He called his agent, Barry, with instructions to re-engage with Hextall and take the offer. Upon calling, Barry was surprised to find a receptive Hextall.
After hanging up with Barry, Hextall bragged to his assistant GM, Chris Pryor, and a handful of staffers, that he “got him on my terms — that’s how you negotiate.” Malkin informed Crosby, Letang and Sullivan that he was staying. When talking to Crosby and Letang, Malkin sounded happy for the first time in a long time.
“We win next year,” Malkin told his friends. “Big year get back Cup.”
also these bits 🥺
After McGinn was put on waivers, he played a memorable final game with the Penguins, blocking shots and setting up Crosby for a dramatic tying goal in the third period. In the locker room afterward, his soon-to-be-former teammates named him player of the game, eliciting a massive roar from the group that could be heard through closed doors.
Hextall traded Teddy Blueger during the same trip. In the middle of a dinner with the players’ fathers, arranged by Crosby at Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa, Blueger learned via social media that he had been dealt to Vegas. He and his dad abruptly left the restaurant. Crosby rushed to console his now former teammate and after a few minutes returned to the dinner. “That’s not how we do things in Pittsburgh,” he said. Crosby remained mostly quiet the rest of the night.
…Long after most of their teammates had left the locker room after the demoralizing 5-2 defeat, the Big Three remained.
Malkin was emotional, his voice rising as he spoke. He had been dreaming of his beloved parents, Natalia and Vladimir, returning to Pittsburgh for another postseason run. Instead, they’d stay in Russia.
Letang, in the adjacent corner of the room, spoke thoughtfully and contemplatively. He had been through hell and back all season, and the Penguins’ loss was another blow.
Then there was Crosby, who sits at the center of an arc of connected lockers. The Penguins captain, with gray hairs that seemed to grow more plentiful throughout the season, sat stoically. After finishing interviews, Crosby sat by himself, staring straight ahead before slowly walking out of the locker room.
sorry need to add the header too because i would totally watch this telenovella

#wowwwwwww#i just… the teddy detail really slayed me#sidney crosby#evgeni malkin#kris letang#teddy blueger#pittsburgh penguins

Little rant bear with me, I just finish crying in a bathroom. Bear with me .
I don’t get this team.. how we this bad when we have a QB who playing MVP levels and can’t be in that talk bc the team let him down. Like how. I know things need to be change. Coaches all sides. I get worry that Chase would decline whatever offer they give him. You have one the best WR in nfl and insane talent QB who can do 4 to 5 TDs and loses. Chase who catches insane TD and Tee. And our defense fails us. Look at Joe.. he a fucking broken man. How much he gonna take b4 he cracks. You have insane QB WR and good ass RB. A kicker who just can’t make his fucking kicks.
Today that press conference was hard, he look broken, and he need this week off badly. Something need to change. Maybe we need a whole ass new playbook. More build better. Both sides. We need a good draft this offseason. And please sign your good players and stop being cheap!!
Like you after not give Joe men bc you want to keep him on the team for 5 years 4 now. I understood team
Need a QB and QB need his best WRs. How long before he just gonna ask for a trade? Do we really need any Joe career to be he good and his team just sucks ass. I don’t want him to leave. He work well over there. Zac you did bring us to the SB. I give you my respect but this year there none. We need a new defense coach. Defense just not clicking.
Those comment Joe said about fans how we support them and other thing he said. Love that he can still say things like this after a lost.
Just I’m broken I wasn’t expecting this season to be like this. Not even 2021 and 2022 was great. Last year can’t say much bc he was injury. I’m done. I’m gonna just stay up most the night thinking. Look of broken man gosh it hard.

This is part of a story on a website called Wildfire Today. A firefighter working in Louisiana on prescribed burns was fired recently from his job.
Lanny Flaherty was over 2,000 miles from home setting prescribed burns in Louisiana when he was fired from his Forest Service job.
The termination was immediate and did not include a severance package, Flaherty told WildfireToday. Despite being miles away from his Oregon home on official duty, Flaherty was told he’d have to find his own way home. It took his union fighting on his behalf for the USFS to temporarily rescind his termination so he could get home.
Flaherty was a range ecologist in Oregon’s Wallowa-Whitman National Forest whose primary duties were studying vegetation and fungi. But, like countless other USFS employees, he had wildfire-fighting secondary duties that made up around half of his job.
I pulled end-of-the-year earning and leave statements for the last few years and saw that I was spending around 40% to 50% of my hours on fire incidents,” Flaherty said. “That alone is thousands of man hours that aren’t going to be available the next time a fire pops up.”
Duncan said Flaherty’s experience was incredibly common across the Forest Service. Around 75% of the USFS probationary employees that the Trump Administration fired had secondary wildland fire duties, according to numbers Duncan obtained from the National Federation of Federal Employees’ Wildland Fire division.
“While ‘primary firefighters’ were exempt, the positions that were cut made some pretty huge contributions to operational wildland fire,” Duncan said. “For example, eastern national forests rely much more heavily on these collateral duty folks to do a lot of prescribed burning and initial attack of wildfires…There were people working the LA fires who, because it was the offseason, weren’t primary fire but were filling in on engines and crews.”

Flaherty’s experience is just one of the countless examples showing the cahaos that the Trump Administration has caused in it's mass firings of thousands of federal land employees, chaos that will have ripple effects for the nation’s wildland firefighting force, according to Grassroots Wildland Firefighters Vice President Riva Duncan.

The United States Department of Agriculture previously told Wildfire Today that it didn’t lay off operational firefighters, but the people it did fire provided critical help to wildland firefighters.

The U.S. wildland firefighting force has been critically short-staffed for years, with former Forest Service Chief Randy Moore testifying in 2022 that firefighting positions in some areas were only 50% filled. Union leaders have feared a looming mass exodus of firefighters every time a 2021 pay boost is narrowly passed by Congress.
Both Duncan and Flaherty said the recent cuts would only strain firefighters further. Not only will the layoffs deprive firefighters of much-needed help, but firefighters have also since been asked to help pick up the duties of fired personnel, increasing an already heavy burden within the fire workforce.
“The remaining workforce becomes people charged with picking up trash at campgrounds or marking timber while we aren’t having fires,” Duncan said. “A lot of firefighters are concerned that they’re just going to be told to do even more with even less, have more of a burden, and maybe even held back from fire assignments to work on some of those other things, because some areas still do that.”
Despite the turmoil Flaherty’s firing caused, he said he’d still be willing to return to his job if an offer came his way. He still believes in the work he was doing and the importance of land stewardship, even if the current administration doesn’t believe in him or people like him. In the meantime, he hopes a tragedy doesn’t occur with understaffed fire crews.
“This is ultimately going to cost lives and endanger everybody that’s out there on the fire line,” Flaherty said.
Flaherty’s chance may come sooner than he expected. The Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), an independent federal court that focuses on government employee complaints, issued a stay order against the USDA on Wednesday. The Board ordered the reinstatement of every position terminated within the department since Feb. 13 to be reinstated for at least 45 days, on the grounds that USDA’s mass and indiscriminate termination was likely unlawful.
It’s unclear how the reinstatement will actually play out, and how many employees will return, according to Duncan.
“No one seems to know what the next steps are or how to re-hire people,” Duncan said. “In other words, nothing seems to have trickled down to the (Forest Service) or (Department of the Interior) regarding this and the process.”
If Flaherty’s job, and the thousands of other public land positions, are reinstated, the process may be as chaotic as the original firing, which doesn’t inspire confidence in the department’s employees and an already strained wildland firefighting force.
USDA was ordered to submit proof it complied with MSPB’s stay by March 10.
Fire season for the last few years has been year round. These mass firings are just the start of a major screw up from this Administration the DOGE queen!

The Essential USWNT Friendship Series: Kelley and Sonnett
Who you are: a person who has stumbled across this post because you are gay, and/or someone who wants to get into the women's world cup and the USWNT but whose fandom experience requires knowledge of the Narratives And Friendships
What this isn’t: an endorsement of being weird to players in public spaces (in real life or comment sections, or on unlocked Twitter accounts)
What this is: a (hopefully) comprehensive collection and explanation of the (public!) friendship between two fan-favorite members of the 2023 WC squad
I know I’m missing stuff and it’s likely I’ll come back to add to this! Every time I try to add anything to this post the draft editor throws me an error message so consider this a part one. Please note this is a sideblog 🫶🏼

Sonnett’s first cap was against Brazil on October 25, 2015–she started and played all 90 minutes as a centerback (beside Becky). Kelley was on the bench.
On Feb 15, 2016 they played together for the first time! They both started against Puerto Rico and Kelley scored!
Kelley was a good mentor to Sonny immediately, her little Georgia peach padawan
They didn’t appear to really get close until winter 2016-2017, when they trained together in Atlanta during the offseason and started to hang out in a smaller group and one on one
Eventually they played on the same team (Washington Spirit in the 2021 and 2022 seasons) and won a championship together! (2021)
It was Kelley's first NWSL playoff run and her first championship, but Sonny's second championship (she won with the Thorns a few years before)
Kelley scored the game-winner in the championship final, in overtime, as a header. She does not typically score, much less with her head (she is like 5'4'' on a good day). It was insane.
------------
PRE-SPIRIT
Once they were friends they were BEST FRIENDS. Kelley loves to annoy Sonnett and has since day one. Couples massage!!, training together with Moe Brian
Typical rookie/vet prank but cuter because they're besties: BOO!
They drink coffee together: Sonnett Sunday, theee Kelley O'Hara,
Sonny is secretly an artist (seriously, she can draw): Lactose Tolerant Cow
They dance together so much. Seriously, so much (bonus Rose). In the car, anywhere.
They hype each other up: Snacks at the beach, blue on navy, flexin, cutest sports girl ever, Sonnett is an undercover singer,
Even their friends have pointed out their similarities. Are they the same or are they the same?
The 2019 World Cup parade was deeply chaotic: please beer and god they drank nonstop idk how they survived, they also napped on the plane back from france with pinoe and ashlyn
they help each other out: cold towel, guest coach kelley,
They threw out the first pitch for the Braves after the World Cup (with Mal, whose husband Dansby played for the Braves at the time)
They also made an appearance at an Atlanta United game together
They were chaotic in every team picture, X,
they took on the Tokyo olympics together (feat many teammates)
they were extremely annoying in the BFF quiz while Kelley and Alex tried to win (link to the BFF quiz episode below in required viewing section)
THE SPIRITS
Sonny's e-bike is their bike, not her bike, but sometimes they biked together too
More coffee adventures, in DC this time, X + X
Mentoring rookies, but this time together
When half the Spirit got COVID in 2021 and had to quarantine at a hotel in Portland, somehow they did not get tired of each other
Exploring restaurants together
Taking pictures of each other (they called each other Rick and Morty for a while which I try to forget), & with their bikes, & with matching orange beanies, more matching orange beanies
more dancing and celebrating, even celebrating carli as a duo, celebrating moving onto the nwsl final
getting jumpscared by their own rookies...together this time
being stinky and sweaty together and generally chaotic
cheering on the braves together on kelley's couch, being very loud and annoying
celebrating the spirit championship together, X + X + schwasted dancing with Kelley's girl together, doing a tiktok with Trinity and the trophy, making memes out of their championship cellies
showing off their championship rings together and celebrating the CBA signing at Audi together
they went to DC pride with the spirits
they developed this weird euopean cheek kissing thing
clowning in huddles together and doing tiktoks with the kids
Being annoying on the player's pod they recorded with Trinity and Andi (link to the pod below in the required watching section)
Still hyping each other up, of course: nice kick!, sonny's soft spirit fingers
POST-SPIRIT
Kelley took a pic of her abs when she got cleated at the CONCACAF tournament in 2022 and in solidarity, Sonny nearly took her shirt off
still taking lots of pictures and videos of each other, mostly Kelley. (I'm putting this in post-Spirit because although we didn't know it yet, Kelley already knew she was leaving DC)
Kelley literally left the Atlanta airport during her layover to hang out with Sonny on her birthday
loving on their Spirit rookies together, even after Kelley was off to NJ, +1 (Trinity's first goal in the 2023 WWC Send-off game)
celebrating Mal's wedding together with Andi and Rose
bringing each other up in every conversation
Being annoying about Taylor Swift
Sonnett almost killed Kelley within the first 30 seconds of them playing against each other for Gotham and the Reign and Kelley thought it was hilarious
OTHER PHOTO DUMPS / COLLECTIONS
Georgia girls
Glued together in Tokyo
More Spirits shenanigans
NT Camp besties
Kelley's visit to Portland in 2019
Hyping each other up in Instagram comments
General camp/NT shenanigans including the infamous "you're so wiggly" video
2019 WC Parade ridiciulousness
More coffee! Plus a cookie (and a "cookie")
MISC PHOTOGRAPHS THAT I JUST HAVE LYING AROUND
more of Kelley mentoring rookie Sonny on the NT
Kelley and Sonny in Atlanta in 2016 or 2017 (I don't remember exactly, I also cropped Moe Brian out of this but it was 800 years ago, sorry Moe)
A moment caught in the background of a post-2019-final celebration picture
Pre-2021 NWSL championship moments: not impressed with someone's pregame speech, Sonny wore 6 for the Spirit so they were neighbors, something Sonny was saying with her mouth full was very interesting to Kelley ,
Some more Spirit NWSL championship moments: they can't believe it, Kelley was beside herself, tongues out for the gals, I would pay to know what Kelley said here, another moment where I would love a transcript,
REQUIRED VIEWING
Kelley's episode of Laughter Permitted with Julie Foudy, where a few of her best friends surprise her with an appearance, including Sonny, Allie Long and Alex Morgan
The BFF Quiz Championship, moderated by Sonnett
The Player's Pod with Sonnett, Andi Sullivan, and Trinity Rodman
1v1 with Kelley O'Hara (pre-camp 2023 WWC)
Throwing the first pitch out with Sonnett, Kelley and Mal

AJ’s Analysis- Week Three Preview⚡️: Chargers (2-0) at Steelers (2-0)
Disclaimer: I am a Chargers fan so this will obviously be biased BUT I have been a football fan for the last 12 years and absolutely love dissecting the game and making comments so I figured I would give this a try! Please feel free to make comments and let me know your thoughts in my inbox!
Players to watch
Los Angeles
#10 Justin Herbert QB- Oregon- Year 5🩵
14/20 and threw for 130 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception last week. Suffered a high ankle sprain but did finish out the game and has played through more pain so I would be surprised if he didn’t gut it out and play tomorrow.
#27 JK Dobbins RB- Ohio State- Year 5
Leading the NFL in rushing yards. Looking to add to his recent dominance this week.
#26 Asante Samuel Jr. CB- Year 4
Haven’t heard his name much yet this season (7 total tackles, one assisted) so I’m sure he’s due for a breakout game. Played in all 17 games last year with 63 total tackles and 2 picks.
Entire Offensive Line
My brothers might be in for a long-ish afternoon and with a quarterback who’s mobility is sure to be limited if he plays so keep an eye on them and what the pressure looks like. Good luck to them.
#70 Rashawn Slater LT
#75 Bradley Bozeman C
#76 Joe Alt RT
#77 Zion Johnson LG
#79 Trey Pipkins III RG
Will Brenden Rice make his debut this week and how will the WR room do?
Steelers
#2 Justin Fields QB- Ohio State- Year 4
First year as a steeler after being kicked to the curb by the Chicago bears this past offseason to draft Caleb Williams and take away most of our offensive weapons like Keenan Allen and Gerald Everett. But moving on, he deserved better and I hope Pittsburgh is a wonderful fresh start for him.
Went 13/20 last week throwing for 117 yards and one touchdown. Dual threat QB who rushed for 1,143 yards in 2022 so we need to watch out for that too.
#22 Najee Harris RB- Alabama- Year 4
Has yet to score a touchdown this season so we should keep it that way. 17 carries for 69 yards last week but did have a 1000 yard rushing season last year with 255 carries, 1,035 yards and 8 touchdowns.
#14 George Pickens WR
Also has yet to score a TD this season. Two catches for 29 yards last week but had 63 catches for 1,140 yards and 5 touchdowns last year so I would keep an eye on his production tomorrow as they continue to open up their offense.
#97 Cameron Heyward DT- Ohio State- Year 14
He is only on here because I am messy. Last time these teams played Cam basically used Justin’s body to stand up and it looked like he punched him in the stomach. Seven tackles so far this season, 33 tackles and 2 sacks last season in 11 games played.
*Here is the 2021 play for reference*
#90 TJ Watt LB- Wisconsin- Year 8
Six Pro Bowls. Four time DPOY finalist, one win. Four time First team all-pro. 3 seasons leading the league in sacks and tied for most sacks in one season with 22.5. 7 tackles and 2 sacks on the season so far. Will be an issue and make his presence known.
#39 Minkah Fitzpatrick S- Alabama- Year 8
Four Pro Bowls. Three time first team all-pro. NFL interceptions co-leader in 2022. 14 total tackles, no picks so far on the year.
