Pundits keep claiming that there are no trans men competing with other men. In reality, there are dozens of amazing trans men playing in the men's leagues, including some impressive Olympic athletes. Here are 5 trans sportsmen who recently joined men's divisions:

Japanese champion boxer Shindo Go generated much interest when he announced he was rejoining the ring in the men's division after transitioning. He just had his first trial fight in December, narrowly losing (29-27) to his opponent. He's set to return professionally this year!

Brazil's champion table tennis player Luca Kumahara began playing against other men in December. He quickly became a finalist in a national competition, defeated only by the championship winner. The 29-year-old trans man is currently providing commentary at the Olympics after playing in the 2012, 2016, and 2021 games.

Loui Sand is a Swedish handball player. He thought he would have to retire in 2019 when he transitioned but Kärra HF contracted him to play on the men's team shortly after! Unfortunately, like too many trans athletes, he had to end his career early in 2022 due to harassment.

Danny Baker started boxing when he was just 14. After transitioning in his 20s, he became Britain's first professional trans boxer in the men's division. He's already won several matches against cis men and continues to fight his way up the ranks!

Finally, fencer Bobbie Hirsch joined his college men's team last year as their first trans male fencer. He placed in the NCAA regionals only weeks after starting. I want to highlight Bobbie because, like many other young trans men, he will undoubtedly make history with his athletic skills.

Bernie Sanders Introduces Long COVID Moonshot Legislation

This legislation "provides $1 billion in mandatory funding per year for 10 years to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support Long COVID research, the urgent pursuit of treatments, and the expansion of care for patients across the country." Announcement on Sander's twitter and the Long COVID Moonshot website.

This announcement references the number 22 million for adults affected by Long COVID in the US but that number is certainly much higher; in 2022 the CDC reported that 7.5% of US adults have Long COVID and that number can only have increased.

Here is an article published today on PBS if you need a primer or a refresher on what Long COVID is and why everyone needs to care about it. From the article:

"Long COVID is a complex chronic condition that can result in more than 200 health effects across multiple body systems. These include:

Heart disease

Neurologic problems such as cognitive impairment, strokes and dysautonomia. This is a category of disorders that affect the body’s autonomic nervous system – nerves that regulate most of the body’s vital mechanisms such as blood pressure, heart rate and temperature.

Post-exertional malaise, a state of severe exhaustion that may happen after even minor activity — often leaving the patient unable to function for hours, days or weeks

Gastrointestinal disorders

Kidney disease

Metabolic disorders such as diabetes and hyperlipidemia, or a rise in bad cholesterol

Immune dysfunction"

I know it's easy to give into despair but THERE IS HOPE for the future! For decreasing transmission of COVID-19, for developing preventatives against Long COVID, and for treating Long COVID. To highlight just a few of the possible pathways to prevention and treatment being currently researched:

The possibility of using antivirals to treat not just Long COVID but any autoimmune disease

The development of N95 masks that can sense SARS-CoV-2 in exhaled breath using a printed immunosensor

A nasal vaccine that halts transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (though does not stop the user from developing COVID-19)

A Japanese research team is looking to treat COVID-19 by using embryonic stem cells to target the virus

The possibility of using already-developed arthritis drugs to treat Long COVID respiratory symptoms

Researchers just identified a possible protein to target in treating Long COVID fatigue

This is an incredibly small collection of studies researching potential treatments but they themselves and the decades of research they are built on had to be funded. In fact, since the pandemic began, more than 24,000 scientific publications about COVID-19 have been published, making it the most researched health condition in any four years of recorded human history.

So there is hope! But all this research needs money. Money that Long COVID Moonshot will provide. And while we wait for research to bear fruit, that $1 billion per year will also be crucial in caring for those suffering from Long COVID in the meantime.

So What Can You Do?

Keep masking - We've just hit 900,000 new COVID cases per day in the US and this wave is not even at its peak yet (For reference, Fauci stated back in 2021 that getting under 10,000 cases per day would allow for mask mandates and safety measures to relax...)

Go on the Long COVID Moonshot website and write to your legislators in support (You can use their script, it only takes 1 minute!)

Keep yourselves and others informed - On the Moonshot website they also offer handy graphics and facts sheets that you can post wherever you can. Spread the word!

And if you or someone you know has Long COVID, you can write in to the Long COVID Moonshot website about your experience

And remember, no one is safe from Long COVID; your chances of developing Long COVID increase with every reinfection. Until research like what Long COVID Moonshot will fund discovers viable preventatives and treatments, the only way to not get Long COVID is to not get COVID-19 in the first place.

Creatively, the group was handed over to February Harp by Wist’s CEO in their early days as they sought a new western influence to handle their newest project. While the musicality itself was deeply appreciated, the concepts and imagery used to visually interpret the sound was a big part of why they are so popular. Driver Profiles: Oscar Piastri

Hello, this is part of a series where I focus on one driver on the current (as of Oct 2024) grid and give an overview over their career and driving styles. I will be going in championship points order. Enjoy!

Name: Oscar Jack Piastri

Age: 23

Driving Style: Piastri is most well known for his calm demeanor, and it is incredibly rare to see him ruffled. This also translates to his driving, which is composed, methodical, and precise. He is one of the cleanest drivers on the grid right now (rare for a rookie) and since the Mclaren car started having more boost this year, he has shown to be ambitious. As he spends more time in F1, he is beginning to gain recognition for his overtakes. Many have noted that he overtakes when people least expect him to, essentially meaning he is not really following the typical overtake playbook. We saw this happen against Leclerc in Baku 2024 and Norris in Monza 2024. While he is still new to the grid, he has shown he can adapt very quickly to high levels of competition. My only criticism is that he tends to not qualify particularly well. If he could fix this one aspect, he would be on the podium (at least) every race with that speedy Mclaren car.

History:

Son of a wealthy businessman, Piastri started his karting career in 2011. By 2014 he had gone professional, and competed in various Australian races and championships. 2015 he began competing in European and other CIK-FIA karting championships . In 2016 he moved to the UK in order to further his career.

In 2016 Piastri landed his first big sponsor, which allowed him to enter into single seater racing for the first time. Later in 2016, Piastri made his single-seater debut in selected rounds of the Formula 4 UAE Championship  and claimed two podiums, taking sixth in the championship. He would go on to take part in F3, GP3, and F2. When he took part in British F4 championship he took 2nd place home. For the next few years he would make appearances in various different series and championships, but never gain himself a title.

In 2020, PREMA Racing, the reigning F3 champions, signed Piastri for the upcoming season. It was during this season that his potential really came out, as he regularly found himself on podiums and on the top step. This led to him clinching the F3 World Championship for 2020 with a tight three-way battle. At the end of this season, Piastri announced he would be graduating up to F2 with PREMA Racing. He would go on to win 6 GP's for the 2021 season, and joined Charles Leclerc on the short list of drivers who won the F2 championship in their rookie year.

In 2020 Piastri joined Renault Sports Academy, and was the reserve drive for Alpine (Renault) in 2022. After Fernando Alonso left Alpine for Aston Martin, it was assumed by most (including Alpine) that Piastri would be part of their driver lineup in 2023. This, however, was proven to be false as Piastri had already signed a contract with Mclaren for the 2023 season, replacing Daniel Riccardo.

The 2023 season at Mclaren was his first official year as an F1 driver. He had a rather impressive rookie year, getting up to 11th in the championship by the end. He acheived his first podium at the 2023 Japanese GP, taking third behind his teamate. Shortly after he received his highest finish in Qatar, taking 2nd place. While he did not match his teammate Lando Norris points wise, he was universally praised. Halfway through the season he reupped his contract with Mclaren, extending to 2026.

The current season has seen Piastri get his maiden win. Unfortunately for the driver, his win at the 2024 Hungarian GP was doused in controversy, as a very public mess with team orders led fans to say the win was given to him by his teammate. He went on to get his 2nd win at the 2024 Azerbaijan GP (Baku) where he held off Charles Leclerc for 1st after a much admired overtake. This win was his first one without the cloud of controversy hanging over it. All in all, the 2024 season has shown that Piastri is a competitive driver.

Major Races:

2023 Japanese GP - Piastri's first podium displayed that he could battle with the top drivers. His consistency and control throughout the race are what helped him get up on the steps.

2023 Qatar GP - Piastri's second podium and highest finish in 2023. His composure was noted as a huge boon in this stressful race, and he only benefitted from the previous days sprint win. Wins always give drivers more confidence.

2024 Hungarian GP - A controversial win to be sure, but Piastri excelled in this race. He overtook his teammate early on in the race and held tight to the lead, only losing it after a Mclaren strat failure. His teammate was then ordered to give the position back, which led to Piastri's win, but nonetheless it was an excellent race by Piastri

2024 Azerbaijan GP - By far Piastri's most impressive race. Baku is an intimidating circuit, but Piastri took to it with ease. His overtake on Charles Leclerc mid race (which in itself was impressive) allowed him to stay ahead of the Ferrari. He then went on for a majority of the race with Leclerc less than a second behind him and putting pressure on. It was Piastri's calm head that won the race, as well as the minimal mistakes he made, not giving Leclerc a single chance to get by.

Alrighty that's it for Piastri. I know there are less major races than the others, but he has been in F1 for a short time. Up next is Carlos Sainz.

tobio can see the end come with unmistakable clarity. it takes a second to score the final point; a raucous breath rattles the lungs to the core, weight rises up from the soles of the feet to the dazzling ceiling lights, the piercing screech of shoes sends the body flying, a sharp glance asses the position and height of the block. then all the strength of argentina's number 2 knocks the ball down, between the rigid fingers of a wall that is no longer insurmountable. a booming sound rumbles through the stadium as the ball crashes down, explosive and unstoppable, even for yaku, shoyo, and kiyoomi.

on the other side of the net, the argentinian team collapses on itself as soon as the whistle blows its verdict. 3-2. tears of joy, tight embraces, and a group hug submerges the players in a tide of light blue. only a few tear-streaked faces and smiling eyes emerge from the huddle, only to be reabsorbed again, pulled into a collective eruption of joy.

kageyama himself is dragged away from the net by foreceful hands and falls into his teammates' arms. the game is over.

tobio takes a breath in, and begins to recover. yaku pats him on the back, his smile trembling with tears, but he grins at kageyama and praises him heartily for his outstanding performance. a wet-eyed atsumu quickly hugs tobio and congratulates his fellow setter. ushijima shakes his hand hard and thanks him for the precision of his plays. sakusa gives a grateful nod. bokuto almost jumps onto him, grateful for his tosses. hajime walks over to his team, and even if their fingers grazed olympic gold only to settle for silver, his eyes shine with tears of pride.

hajime distributes hugs and words of support, congratulations, and comfort left and right. he pats the back of tobio's neck through his timid hug, and assures his former kouhai that he couldn't be prouder of him.

then, tobio watches hajime take a step back, make sure that his players are holding each other up, and walk over to the other side of the court, ducking under the net. he opens his arms wide and, on the argentinian side of the court, tooru comes running to him.

tobio's gaze wanders back to his side, where he meets shoyo's. the assistant coach pats his shoulder and congratulates him on a great game, to which shoyo replies with a thankful word, even though the corners of his eyes are red from rubbing out tears. still he grins at tobio, invites him forward.

tobio joins him, touching the hands open for him to take.

“your sets were the best today, kageyama!”

“your spikes were... weren't... that bad either,” tobio brings himself to say - a little raspingly, timidly. but shoyo reads him with such patience and persistent care, that tobio hopes he sees through him this time too. “but you still have to work on your receive. don't think we can stop at this, dumbass.”

“i was never going to,” shoyo frowns, but his face lights up with combativeness. the disappointment from second place morphs into a new goal, a new height that tobio wants to take him to. “next time, we'll get gold.”

after the medal ceremony, journalists and cameras flock to the victorious teams for post-game impressions and comments. these interviews are the ones tobio finds easier - no anecdotes to share, no personal questions to answer, no games to play. just volleyball.

as the japanese national team meets the interviewers who warmly congratulate them on their silver medal, tobio sees hajime pass by tooru out of the corner of his eye. the argentinian setter is already expressively chatting with a journalist, the hard-won gold medal sitting next to the sun of the argentinian flag on his chest. tooru catches hajime's shoulder in passing and he drags him into the interview, smiling brightly as he tells the world that he could count on the support of his /husband/ throughout. hajime's hand brushes the hollow of tooru's back and a playful smile sets on his lips as he says that marrying his rival was a real handful. but he couldn't be prouder of both his own team, and tooru.

tobio looks away, down at his feet. a sudden flush shoots up his cheeks, but the realization is a simple one: he has everything he's ever wished for. the silver medal gently weighing on his neck, the burnt taste in his throat, and the dried sweat on his forehead are his olympic dream. the someone better who kazuyo promised him came to found him, in the form of his high school teammate and rival, his opposite hitter on the jnt, his partner in volleyball and life. shoyo.

seeing hajime and tooru stand side by side, tobio thinks that maybe there is just one thing missing. he walks over to shoyo before a journalist can assail the japanese greatest decoy with post-game questions.

“hey, hinata.” heat rises to his neck, but tobio fights back - he knows all he has to do. “you're going back to brazil, and i'm going back to italy soon,” he begins.

shoyo nods with this look tobio knows by heart: he is determined to aim for the next challenge. “yes, but i'll keep track of my wins and defeats so i can win against you too!” he adds playfully, to reassure tobio before their ways part once again. “when you visit me in brazil again, or i come to italy, i'll be even stronger.”

“i'm counting on it. don't fall behind,” tobio counters instinctively, and the task at hand doesn't seem so overwhelming anymore, not so big. it is just the next logical step. shoyo's competitive smile, reserved for tobio only, and the optimistic, loving look in his eyes, are tobio's answer. “do you want to get married?”

“what— you mean...”

“to me,” tobio clarifies at shoyo's thunderstruck stutter. “before we leave japan.”

“tobio.” shoyo's parted lips break into a choked-up laugh. “of course i want to get married to you!”

“great.” a relieved smile softens tobio's serious expression. “i don't have a ring though,” he remembers, as if he only just became aware of the full implications of his proposal. “but... here.” tobio takes his silver medal off, putting it around shoyo's neck instead. “you can have this.”

“tobio...” shoyo pulls him into his arms, holding tobio tightly against his chest, where both medals dig into their jerseys, a silver thread that runs between them, keeps them close together.

“i win this time too,” tobio murmurs into shoyo's shoulder, with a victorious gentleness to his low voice.

“are you saying you just /beat/ me to proposing?”

“i did.”

“no way, kageyama! this doesn't count as winning and losing!” shoyo takes a step back to argue - lightly, with fresh redness around his eyes, like so many tearful furrows of happiness.

“it does.”

“absolutely not! this is not volleyball. or, only just a little bit!”

“alright. fine,” tobio grumbles at shoyo's insistence. “just promise me that you won't ever stop trying to get better than me.”

later on, the moving picture of the japanese setter and opposite hitter hugging each other by the court is all over the media. when shoyo and tobio take their leave off the olympic court, journalists don’t let the occasion pass.

“hinata-senshu, congratulations on a well-deserved silver medal! how did you feel during the game? did you imagine that you would go home with a medal at the start of the olympics?”

“the team and i always fought with the goal of winning an olympic medal in mind. we can’t predict the future, but the challenges of each game took us one step further. it was a difficult path, and this last game was no exception. the argentinian team played with amazing strength, they beat us fair and square, though we put up a fight too. i’m really happy for oikawa-senpai!”

 ⠀⠀  ⠀nakyung was born on april 1st, 2001 as nicole lee in toronto, canada. she grew up in port hope, ontario, canada with her older brother, daniel, and younger sister, ciara. her mother, angie, worked as a middle school music teacher and her father, joshua, was a construction worker.

 ⠀⠀  ⠀she became interested in music early on, her mother teaching her how to play guitar and piano as soon as she was old enough. when nakyung wanted to be a singer “just like stevie nicks” at eight-years-old, angie put her in vocal lessons.

 ⠀⠀  ⠀after being persuaded by her best friend, she joins the free ballet classes at her school with her. she starts to take dance and her vocals more seriously, finding it more fun than instruments. 

 ⠀⠀  ⠀when she’s thirteen, her parents tell her and her siblings that her mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer the year before. they wanted to wait to see if chemotherapy would help. angie had gotten laid off from her job, leaving joshua the only financial support. 

 ⠀⠀  ⠀for more financial stability and emotions support, the lee family moved from canada to south korea to stay with angie’s parents. nicole didn’t even have time to say goodbye to her friends.

 ⠀⠀  ⠀nicole, now going by nakyung, didn’t make very much friends in her new school and kept mostly to herself. she got a job under the table as a waitress to help her parents with bills, telling her family she was at a dance studio by her school.

 ⠀⠀  ⠀while working, she was scouted by pledis entertainment. despite her parents thinking it was sketchy and cult-like, she auditioned and was accepted. as her brother was going to seoul national university, she moved to seoul with him to train at pledis.

 ⠀⠀  ⠀in 2016, nakyung’s parents announced that angie was in remission. she started working as a teacher again after becoming healthier.

 ⠀⠀  ⠀nakyung was in the final line-up for pledis’ upcoming girl group, but was pulled out due to ‘not being ready’. she almost left the company until her mother convinced her to stay and become better.

 ⠀⠀  ⠀with no news of a new pledis girl group, nakyung volunteered herself to join mnet’s survival show, produce 48. she would end up placing second in the last episode and debuting in temporary girl group, IZ*ONE, in 2018.

 ⠀⠀  ⠀in 2020, nakyung’s parents announced that angie’s cancer had came back— being part of the 10-20 percentage of ovarian cancer recurrence. angie would not try chemotherapy again, wanting to be with her family and go to new zealand. due to the pandemic, the family would ultimately stay in korea and not fulfill angie’s wish.

 ⠀⠀  ⠀in 2021, her mother dies and IZ*ONE disbands. nakyung is not seen for a long time, not even by her IZ*ONE members until her OST song for kdrama ‘twenty-five twenty-one’, stardust love song, was announced. she would, again, disappear.

 ⠀⠀  ⠀in 2022, it is assumed nakyung left pledis around this time as she later joins S2 entertainment after lee haein offered her a spot in ber upcoming girl group.

͙͘͡ ★ ◞  FATHER.     joshua lee was born march 13th, 1973 in daegu, south korea as lee jaehyun. the day he turned eighteen, he left his house and moved to canada with his best friend and legally changed his name to joshua lee. he met angela park in 1994 and would go on to have three children with her. the first being daniel in 1997, nicole in 2001, and ciara in 2004. he doesn’t want to be in korea when they have to move but does it for his wife. when angie dies in 2021, he completely barricades himself in their room. one day, his number is changed and all of his belongings are gone. we never find out what happened to him but he either killed himself or changed his name again and started a new life. he is referred to as ‘dad’ or ‘deadbeat’. (non affectionately)

͙͘͡ ★ ◞  MOTHER.     angela ‘angie’ lee was born on october 29th, 1975 in jeju, south korea as park jangmi. she goes by angela or angie now because she likes the name. she was studying abroad in canada when she met joshua. in 2012, she is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. together, they decide to bare the news on their shoulders alone and decide not to tell anyone unless chemotherapy doesn’t work. it begins to work, but it’s too expensive and she’s laid off. they have to move to seoul to be near her family for help. she hates the person she is while on chemo, and turns to god in her sickness and health, even when she’s in remission in 2016. she begins working again. in 2020, the cancer come back, but angie doesn’t want to be on chemo again. she wants to be with her family, in new zealand. but then they can’t go and she dies in korea. she is referred to as ‘mom’.

͙͘͡ ★ ◞  BROTHER.     daniel lee was born on august 15th, 1997 in toronto, canada. he grew up teasing his younger sisters, ever so mean to them during puberty but there for them when they were upset. his relationship with his parents wasn’t so great, always noting a difference in the way they brought him up compared to his sisters. when he was eighteen, he left for seoul national university in 2015 with his sister. he now works as a cyber security engineer. he is referred to as ‘daniel’, ‘danny’ or ‘dumbass’. (affectionately)

͙͘͡ ★ ◞  SISTER.     ciara lee was born on november 3rd, 2004 in ontario, canada. she grew up wanting to be everything like her sister, wanting to be around her constantly. she slightly grew up in nakyung’s shadow, but that didn’t matter to her— it just made her want to be her even more. she wants to become an idol just like her older sister— and she will. she currently lives with their aunt, sooyoung, and her girlfriend, bora, in busan, south korea. she is referred to as ‘chaeyoung’ or ‘cee’ or ‘ciara’.

͙͘͡ ★ ◞  MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER.     park seoyoung was born on january 19th, 1955 in busan, south korea. she met lee hojin in 1972 and shortly married him a few months later the same year. they would go on to have three children, one boy, two girls. in 1996, seoyoung and hojin moved to chungnam, south korea and settled there for the rest of their lives. in 2017, her health begins to decline. in 2018, she dies in her sleep peacefully. she is referred to as ‘할머니’ (halmoni).

͙͘͡ ★ ◞  MATERNAL GRANDFATHER.     park hojin was born on may 12th, 1949 in ulsan, south korea. after his father died during the korean war, his mother moved them to busan. he met seoyoung in 1972, marrying her and having three children with her. in 1996, he and seoyoung moved to chungnam. in 2001, he suffered from a heart attack. he is currently retired, but used to work as a contractor.

͙͘͡ ★ ◞  PATERNAL GRANDFATHER.     lee jihyuk was born in 1950. he was verbally and physically abusive to his son, jaehyun, which was one of the leading factors of why jaehyun left forever at eighteen. he died in 1994 of a heart attack.

͙͘͡ ★ ◞  PATERNAL GRANDMOTHER.     jung yeonhee was born on july 1st, 1954. she never tried to protect her son from her husband, but joshua was soft on her and it took a lot of him to leave her behind. after jihyuk died in 1994, she tried to find jaehyun, as she knew him, but failed. she later settled in jeju, south korea in 2000 and died of a car accident in 2011. 

͙͘͡ ★ ◞  PATERNAL AUNT.     lee eunbyul was born on december 28th, 1981. her brother was nine years older than her and never cared enough to talk to her, despite the two having more in common than he thought. she was relieved when their brother left and then her father died. when her mother tried to look for her brother who never even wanted them, she grew angry and began to resent her mother and her brother even more.
