Here is the finished t-shirt quilt that has been an on-going project for the last few months. Erin has it on her bed now and is super happy with the results. * Erin used to do the Irish dancing and I had been to several of her feis events and was just amazed at what those kids could do with their bodies! These are the tshirts that had been purchased over the year. * Super proud that Erin has been accepted into NC State in the College of Engineering. Super smart girl with a bright future ahead of her. Great job Erin! * * * #ilovemyjob #ilovesewing #ilovetosew #sewingfun #sewing #quiltsofinstagram #quilting #quiltingcotton #quiltingcottons #handsewing #handsewn #handstitching #tiedquilts #2020senior #quilters https://www.instagram.com/p/B-QKwdjgHSF/?igshid=1q7rz221wem4x

Artist Feature: Martha Wheeler
Do you believe in ghosts (apparitions)?
Absolutely. In fact, I ghost hunt in my spare time with fellow artist Jem Brock and I have delved into spirit photography with the wet plate process.
What is the most dangerous thing you have done for your art?
Playing with cyanide and ether to make photographs. I’ve never come close to an accident with my chemicals and I love being a part of a small community of female collodion photographers, defying anyone who dare ask, “Should you really be messing with that stuff?” If I were a man, they would never ask.
What was the biggest turning point in your career for your work(art)?
A big turning point was when I realized that photography was the most effective method to share my ideas – to document the world in a format that creates a relationship of trust between artist and viewer in a way that a painting or drawing cannot. In the Collodion Witches project, there is a truthfulness to how contemporary witchcraft is portrayed, even though the viewer is separated from the subject by a number of factors including my own bias, they see the witch in the way they wish to be seen.
What is your art about?
Using a photographic process invented in 1851, I document the rituals, experiences, and altars of witches. The wet plate collodion process is unforgiving, often susceptible to failure, with low success rates yet produces entirely unique images through the tintype and ambrotype. While providing its photographer with unparalleled contrast and haunting forms, this process lends itself to the portrayal of witchcraft through the use of dangerous, rudimentary chemicals and long exposure times. The collodion plates elevate the witch as they become ethereal forms, mystical beings with ghostly eyes and wavering bodies. Contemporary witchcraft blends a mix of various historical practices that traditionally provide power to its users. The people photographed in Collodion Witches have systematically been denied rights and safety, finding sanctum within witchcraft as a source of control and power. The wet plate process reimagines witches in a light that distracts from the negative stereotypes assigned upon them, representing the subjects with truth to reveal their lives and experiences.
Martha Wheeler (b. 1997) is an artist specializing in the 170-year-old wet plate collodion photographic process as well as performance art. Her work delves into issues of otherness, femininity, and violence currently through the Collodion Witches project in which she photographs contemporary witches and their rituals. Her photographs have been shown in various galleries in the Colorado Springs area such as Kreuser Gallery and The Gallery Below and in 2019 was featured in a solo show at The Dock. She is graduating from UCCS in 2020 where she also serves as co-president of Art Club. Martha lives and works in Colorado Springs taking photographs with a 100-year old camera and a self-built, portable darkroom in the back of her car.

The past three years of high school went by extremely quickly and now there are only a few short months left to enjoy it! I’ve spent the previous years dreaming about graduating, and now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. But like most things in life, my expectations don’t always align with reality.
To have smooth sailing during my senior year, it helps to know what to expect and how to deal with it. For starters, senior year is a time to remain focused on ending the year strong and keeping my grades up. To avoid succumbing to senioritis, making sure I set realistic goals throughout the year and stay focused on achieving them.
Since I’ll be extremely busy, developing my time management skills and keeping my schedule organized. Besides, making sure I get started with your college applications early to avoid making any last-minute mistakes!
When the year draws to an end, I’ll have a chance to pick a quote for graduation and your yearbook.”live in the moment and dont regret it , you never know when a pandemic is gonna ruin your last months in your senior year”
stay safe ,and wash your hands!

My commencements were horrendously boring. My senior prom was a disaster. Afterwards, I thought to myself: “I shouldn’t have even gone to those things. They were a waste of my time.”
BUT I HAD THE OPTION. I was able to make a decision on if I wanted to go or if I didn’t. 2020 Seniors don’t get that option, and for that I am so sorry. My heart goes out to you, and I hope that you all find your own ways to work through those thoughts and emotions on top of everything else you are going through right now.
So for now: stay inside, stay strong, and plan one hell of a party for when this is all over.
to everyone who is losing things like concerts and senior proms and commencements and brunches they’d had planned forever and literally anything they’ve been looking forward to i’m sorry. i really am. it sucks and i’m sure there will be people in your life who will tell you to get over it because others have it worse right now and while it may be true that others have it worse that doesn’t make your pain, disappointment, or sadness any less real or valid. keep your head up.

After so many years of school from preschool to senior year, it's nice to say officially that I'm done with school. I'm proud to be a 2020 Senior, especially with going to the awesome school named Lone Jack High School. I have learned a lot on this journey and have met so many awesome people that I will never forget. Truly grateful and I am going to the parade on May 16th, I love this school. As for my senior class, it's great to have been in the group! Once a Mule, forever a Mule!! #2020seniors #lonejackhighschoolc6 #ljhsmules https://www.instagram.com/p/B_9uqf3Anuk/?igshid=1tywr92sldxcv

Hey #classof2020 and #2020seniors don’t feel bad you can’t go to your senior prom. I didn’t go to my prom and look how well adjusted I turned out. The left pic is when I was a few weeks from finishing my masters, a real adult, and spilled buffalo sauce all over myself. You bet it looks like I peed my pants! And you bet I had to walk through a college campus student center to purchase overly priced sweatpants! The right shot is when I was a senior in college a few weeks away from graduation. Another real adult moment. It’s too complicated to explain what was happening here...but LOOK AT HOW NORMAL I AM! It’s cool. Prom wouldn’t have helped me. It’s really weird I couldn’t get a date though right? Makes no sense. #tbt #throwbackthursday #embarrassing #2020 #hotmess (at Hot Mess Express) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_5JQ_Cg1Uy/?igshid=5elnmz573vop

Artist Feature: Ashley Andersen
How does your process change your relationship with materials?
This depends on my starting point with a specific piece. If I am starting with an idea then I will do research on what materials aid in communicating that idea, but often my inspiration for a piece begins with an intuitive attachment and curiosity with a specific material. Regardless, material is one of the primary motivations within my process.
What texture can you not stand?
I hate the feeling and sound of an uncovered mattress…and microfiber when it sticks to your fingertips!
How do your parents feel about you getting an art degree? I have been incredibly blessed to have been raised in a family that never discouraged my desire or pursuit of art. They always encouraged the way I saw the world and often were co-creators or co-problem solvers in the construction of my work. They have always been my support group.
What is my art about?
Ashley Andersen is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is motivated by the sensual ambiguity of the conversations around the issues of memory, histories, and our experiences. By examining the memory housed within materials through her site-specific installations she opens a dialogue between the present and the ignored or forgotten past. These immersive experiences respond poetically to the presence of abandoned domestic sites, while her objects encourage introspection. Within her work she aims to make the viewer feel more human by giving them objects, encounters, or images of scenes where they are presented with elements of the familiar juxtaposed with the strange. Such experiences can enhance the amorphous territory that occurs within a memory or affective happening. It is in that place that we navigate within our senses.
Ashley Andersen lives and works in Colorado Springs. In 2017 she transferred to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs where she received the Suzy Weinert Scholarship, and the Haris Scholarship in consecutive years. She was exhibited in Colorado’s Statewide Artists Showcase in 2019 where she was named the top Emerging Artist and was awarded the Best of Show for emerging talent.
