the cool thing about last night is that really, while sad to watch, it didn’t ultimately phase me. like, i watched this team lose 4-0 in game 7 of the finals and then basically get swept in round 1 the next year. i watched loui eriksson’s tenure as a canuck, only for his contract to turn into OEL’s contract, which turned into the OEL buyout, which we will be paying for years to come while OEL *checks notes* now has a stanley cup. i watched them sneak into the 2020 playoffs because the pandemic stopped the season before they could plummet in the standings too much, only to score 0 goals in game 7 of round 2 while their rookie goalie put up a historical performance. i watched them lose the first, like, 7 games of the 2022-2023 season while giving up third period leads like it was their job. the canucks can’t hurt me anymore!!! they can try but the team has been hurting me longer than most of its players have even been in the league 💓
anyway in other news if we don’t win against san jose i’m going to pass away

silent confessions
Tumblr media
September 4, 2020
Spencer clenched his jaw frustrated as the buzzer went off in the arena and he watched as Dallas all skated together celebrating happily, he could feel the arena shaking from the crowd celebrating.
The Canucks were so close, getting to game seven of the series and losing 0-3 in the last game of the playoff series.
Spencer saw Quinn’s dejected face and skated slowly to him gently nudging him and Quinn looked over and felt his shoulders relax just slighty seeing Spencer.
The two slowly skated off the ice once they congratulated the other team and walked with the team down the tunnel and into the locker room.
The locker room was filled with a tense silence, everyone angry and upset with how close they got to the Stanley cup only to fall short.
Spencer started taking his uniform off once he sat on his stall and winced slightly feeling his body aching with exhaustion and feels many of bruises aching from all the hits he took tonight.
Spencer only slowly nodded to their coach and captains speech keeping his eyes on his skates.
Spencer got up as soon as everyone was finished speaking and headed straight to the showers and hoping right in underneath the scorching hot water and just closed his eyes standing under the water.
Spencer let out a long sigh leading his head back against the cold titles, he wished they were playing at home and he could he going home tonight rather than going back to a hotel room, even if he has been living in the hotel for the last month.
Spencer knew he had to come out the shower eventually especially since he could feel his skin wrinkling from being under the water so long.
Spencer was too tired to care to get back into his game day suit and threw a pair of sweatpants and hoodie and pulling his hoodie up over his head.
Spencer walked out of the showers and back into the locker room seeing it mostly empty and he’s not surprised knowing most of the team probably quickly showered and got on the first bus back to the hotel.
Spencer saw Quinn still sitting in his stall with his head leaning back against the wall and in comfortable clothes as well.
Spencer walked over to Quinn packing up his stuff from his stall and the movement made Quinn open his eyes and look over at Spencer.
Spencer gave him a tiny smile and got one back. Quinn scooted closer to Spencer as he watched Spencer pack up his bag, Quinn has been waiting for Spencer not wanting to go back without him.
“Ready to go?” Spencer quietly whispered the first words he has spoke in hours. Quinn slowly nodded and took Spencer’s hand to stand up and reluctantly dropped it as they started walking out of the locker room.
They walked through the hallway out to where the bus was waiting and Spencer followed Quinn up the steps into the bus, Quinn tiredly walked down a few rows of the bus and flopped down on one of the rows, Spencer sat down next to him and immediately Quinn leaned his head on Spencer’s shoulder.
Spencer leaned his chin on top of Quinn’s head staring at the windows as the rest of the team got onto the bus and the equipment was finished being loaded onto the bus.
The drive to the hotel was quick and Spencer and Quinn both got up and tiredly walked off the bus and into the hotel, Spencer clicked the elevator open and they stepped in.
He clicked the floor level and they waited in comfortable silence as the elevator went up to the floor.
Quinn walked out first and Spencer followed right behind him, Quinn opened the door to their hotel room and closed it once Spencer walked in.
Spencer slipped his shoes off and walked right to his bed flopping onto his back. Quinn slid his shoes off and empty his pockets turning his phone off and tossing it onto the nightstand.
Quinn looked over nervously at Spencer.
Spencer looked over at Quinn seeing him looking at him, Spencer blinked realizing what Quinn wanted and he opened his arms up.
Quinn perked up and quickly walked over and flopped down right next to Spencer and buried his head in Spencer’s neck and wrapped his arm over Spencer’s chest and he felt Spencer’s arm come up around him holding his tightly.
They have cuddled before especially as long or hard games or when they needed comfort but Quinn has never let himself cling to Spencer this much worried that Spencer would be able to see his feelings for him but Quinn didn’t even care right now if he was being obvious about his feelings he just wanted to be held by Spencer.
Spencer let out long breath and relaxed more nuzzling his head on the top of Quinn’s wet hair, Spencer has always enjoyed their cuddling but this was way better than anything they have ever done before.
Spencer hesitantly brought his hand up to Quinn’s head and gently ran his fingers in Quinn’s hair and Quinn made a soft but happy sound and Spencer felt him relax more.
Spencer didn’t know how long Quinn and him laid there in silence but he looked out the window and saw it was pitch black now.
Quinn knew Spencer had to feel something back for him because Quinn has never seen Spencer cuddle with anyone besides letting Jack cuddle with him and Spencer is very minimal with physical touch so Quinn knows it’s really special that Spencer is letting him cuddle with him.
Quinn titled his head up resting his chin on Spencer’s chest and caught Spencer just staring at him with a soft but loving expression and Quinn wondered how he didn’t notice how Spencer looks at him.
“Hi.” Quinn softly whispered leaning his face closer to Spencer’s.
“Hi.” Spencer mumbled back just as softly, Quinn was close enough he could feel his breath lightly over his lips.
Spencer and Quinn maintained eye contact and they knew. They knew they felt the same for each other.
Spencer slowly nodded and Quinn leaned closer once more and they finally connected their lips together. Spencer finally ran his hand across Quinn’s beard and brought his hand to the back Quinn’s head holding him to him.
Quinn let out a happy sound as they pulled back for a second to catch their breath before Spencer pressed his lips desperately back to Quinn’s.
“I-“ Spencer mumbled trying to get his words out which has always been difficult for him, especially when he’s emotional.
“I know.” Quinn softly interrupted Spencer gently caressing Spencer’s cheek, Quinn has learned to read Spencer and he understands what Spencer is trying to say.
“Me too.” Quinn mumbled back softly nudging his nose to Spencer’s.
“Yeah.” Spencer hopefully mumbled back and Quinn smiled nodding.
Quinn rested his forehead against Spencer’s.
“So can i say now how hot facial hair is on you.” Spencer mumbled with a small smirk, Quinn shook his head blushing as he gently pushed Spencer making Spencer throw his head back laughing.
Quinn face was flushed and he had a shy smile as he watched Spencer laugh before slowly calming down and looking back at him.
“What i like my boyfriend’s facial hair so what?” Spencer gently teased cupping Quinn’s face not feeling to nervous as he called Quinn his boyfriend for the first time.
Quinn just grinned even brighter leaning into Spencer’s touch.

Update on trade
Again this is coming from ESPN and the Devils app
We got a goalie!!!!
The New Jersey Devils announced today that the team has acquired goaltender Jake Allen from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for New Jersey’s conditional third-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft. Montreal will retain 50% of Allen’s salary both this year and in 2024-25, the last year of his contract. The announcement was made by President/General Manager Tom Fitzgerald.
The conditions on the pick are as follows: if Allen plays in 40 regular-season games in the 2024-25 season and his club qualifies for the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the 2025 third-round pick becomes New Jersey’s 2025 second-round selection.
Allen, 33, joins New Jersey after spending the last four seasons with Montreal. The 6’2”, 195lbs. goaltender recorded a 41-68-15 career record with the Canadiens, while also earning three shutouts and a 3.30 goals-against average (GAA). Allen posted 6-12-3 record in 21 games this season for Montreal and owns a 6-1-0 career record playing at Prudential Center.
Before Allen was traded to Montreal on Sept. 2, 2020, he played in parts of eight seasons with the St. Louis Blues from 2011-12 to 2019-20. Allen earned 148 career wins with St. Louis, which ranks second all-time for Blues franchise history. The Fredericton, New Brunswick native logged his first career regular season start on Feb. 13, 2013, in a 4-3 win at Detroit. He recorded a career-high 33 wins in 2016-17 with St. Louis and earned a career-high six shutouts in 2015-16.
The veteran netminder also carries Stanley Cup Playoff experience, after playing in six postseasons with St. Louis, and was a member of their 2019 Stanley Cup championship team. Allen has played in 29 career postseason contests and owns an 11-12 overall record with a 2.06 GAA.
Born on Aug.7, 1990, St. Louis selected Allen in the second round, 34th overall, in the 2008 NHL Draft. He also represented Canada on the international stage at the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) U18 World Junior Championship (WJC) in 2007-08 and 2009-10. Allen helped Canada win a Gold Medal in 2008 and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He also earned a Silver Medal with Canada at the 2010 WJC.

(primer anon) Thank youuuu <3 <3 <3 The giant goalie hugs are SO cute 🥹 saved your sources and shall scour them on my next day off! I'd love to hear more on giant Nic hague and the other d-men (saw on cap friendly today that mcnabb and whitecloud have both been knights since season 1!) but you've already gone above and beyond helping me out and i'm sure I can find stuff in the blogs and accounts you linked if you're all worded out <3
Hi!!! sorry this took so long! It's not because it was difficult to do, but because I just had a lot going on today (i slept late and then was out / busy for most of today until now)
So, a couple of players have actually been with VGK since year one that don't get credit for it, some who were drafted by VGK (Nic Hague) and some that weren't ( Keegan Kolesar, Zach Whitecloud).
Keegan Kolesar was drafted by CBJ in 2015, but never played for them & was traded to VGK in june of 2017. He played for the Chicago Wolves (VGK, as I understand it, shared the Wolves as a dev team, since a bunch of VGK-developed guys played for them) and then played for VGK starting in 2020 (he played 1 game in 2019-2020)
Zach Whitecloud was playing for Bemidji State University in 2017-2018 when VGK signed him (he played 1 game for VGK in 2017-2018)
Hague, Kolesar & Whitecloud, despite being with the organization since practically its inception aren't considered "Golden Misfits" like Karlsson, Carrier, Smith, Marchessault, Theodore, & McNabb were (during the cup playoffs last year, Smith was traded over the summer of 2023 to the Penguins) Because they weren't part of the run to the cup final that year in 2018.
Now, that's enough just flat backstory, I think. Let's talk about defensemen. I love ALL of our defensemen.
McNabb is SO quiet? but I love him so much. When people celebrate in OT, most of the guys will go celebrate with the person who scored, but Nabber almost always goes to celebrate with the goalie first. nabber MY BRO. His notes in this video are SO cute. Hip check? Pass to Shea. Nope. SHOTS. I know this isn't much about hockey, but I just think it's really cute that Nabber had these written down. He does SO MANY reverse hipchecks on guys it's lovely to see. And Shea is his going steady d-partner, unless there's a shakeup in the d-core, then they give the baby d-man to Nabber. He's basically a capybara. Even Panda thinks so:
Tumblr media
It's Very cute.
Tumblr media
During warm ups, they have the lil pyramid of pucks and will carrier knocks them down when he goes out. all except for one, which he stands up on it's side. And then when Brayden comes out next to last (goalies come out last) he knocks it down. It's SUCH a cute lil ritual.
Nic Hague is so tall! His voice is so deep! He seems so Polite! Every guy tries to fight him and for the most part he refuses to engage it is SO funny. He did get kicked out of a game last year in the Dallas Series for giving a sarcastic thumbs up at a dude. He is sooo funny
and hot
Tumblr media
he wears??? glasses??
Tumblr media
Despite the fact that his face looks like he's never had a thought in his WHOLE LIFE when hes geared up:
Tumblr media
He won the OHL Scholastic Player of the year in 2015-2016, the year after Connor McDavid had it on lockdown for 2 years straight.
IDK if anyone has mentioned it to you, but VGK has an emoji line up - everyone has a say in their emoji to an extent, and Haguer's is a giraffe. Well, he's got a giraffe floatie.
he took the stanley cup on it
Tumblr media
Now for Zach Whitecloud:
I love him. That's what you have to understand. He's perfect and he's never done a crime in his entire life. His PIMs are a glitch.
He cried when he took a penalty in OT in 2020 and they lost the series to the stars. He cried IN THE BOX. It was his first season.
His defensive partner is Nic Hague. They were roommates in Chicago with the wolves. They were roommates in VGK for a bit (then Dylan Coghlan (now with the Canes) moved in, I think.)
They're SUCH good defensive partners, I LOVE them, but they're also excellent apart.
Zach is colorblind, so he often has very fancifully patterned suits / ties.
Tumblr media
he's always holding 2 drinks. Most of the time it's 2 coffees, but this one is a coffee and a water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
An announcer was racist about his name on air, and he got really upset about it but was SO SO gracious about it.
He's from around Manitoba (literally like half the team is, it's bonkers, GMKM, you're obsessed) and he *really really* looked up to Mark Stone. He was really excited to get to play with him.
he decided to who to pick (out of a number of teams) in a bathroom
He's just. I love seeing his face. He's an excellent defenseman, he's a great guy and i love him so so so much.
Zach and Martini have this lil "SUH DUDE" handshake that they do when they win, because they both stand and wait for everyone to get off the ice before they leave, and then they do this cuteass handshake thing where they wiggle their fingers at each other. it's *adorable*
Also i forgot about this Martini mic'd up
And now i'm gonna talk about a random guy you haven't heard about before: Ben Hutton. He's our 7th defensemen who normally is a healthy scratch, but is the 1st call up when someone else is injured. He was the guy in the video where Marty and Petro were affectionately bitching at each other who agreed with Marty.
Everyone loves him. In 2022-2023, not a lot of d-men were hurt, so he didn't get to play a lot, but Bruce said that he had SUCH a good attitude & was SUCH a lovely guy. He stayed and practiced with the guys who were on IR and they joked that "they had to go thru him" to get back to playing hockey again (they were all forwards). Which I think is really really cute.
When Vancouver did a lip sync battle for their gala, he danced to barbie girl. ANd KILLED it
He doesn't really like chocolate "I'm not a big chocolate guy" says he. His birthday is 4/20. Ate like ka whole tub of strawberry lemonade flavored ice cream (he didn't eat lunch). He wasn't sure he was gonna stay in the league, but he trained with deryk engelland (a retired VGK d-man) and improved so much that they gave him a permanent roster spot.
Hutton is another one of those guys who skates to the goalie in OT instead of the guy who scored. It's VERY cute.
Tumblr media
agreed, nic hague. that's also how i look at button
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always think it's fun to know which guys stick their tongues out when they're happy?

no because haha robo's more excited for his teammates goals than his own but it's like. obviously. obviously robo wants otter to win the vezina and otter wants robo to win the hart and the finns want miro to win the norris and delly wants wyatt to win the calder and it's just. who cares about what i deserve when my friend deserves it more? it's like who cares if i get to lift the cup as long as my best friends do? who cares about what everyone else has to say about us when i love you? it's about the sign at the 2020 playoffs that reads "their difference makes are individuals, ours is the team". it's the "i want to play dallas forever, if i can" even though the only thing the city can give you in return is their affection. it's everyone asking why you're still playing for a team that will never win the stanley cup and knowing, deep down, that they're probably right, and then staying anyway

Instagram Intros (Mitch Marner's Kids)
Tumblr media
Lucas William Marner (@lucasmarner)
DOB: August 29th 2016 Age: 32 years old Hometown: Toronto, Ontario Nicknames: Luke, Luka, Lukey S/O: Ashlyn Morris Kids: Nolan, Joshua, and Braley Best Friend(s): Eliot Nylander Aesthetic: Lucas, like his father and step-father, was a hockey player. His father had convinced his mother to put him into pee-wee hockey when he was around 4 years old and he had been playing ever since. He was an exceptional player from the beginning, already having experience tagging along to family skate and the Leafs games growing up. Luke adored his dad in every way shape and form. So when his parents split up and Olivia started dating Jack, it was hard on him to say the least. He was used to being around the Leafs family, and now being so called "stuck" in New Jersey with Jack's actual family ruined him. He was as open to Jack as his younger siblings were. Luke was being constantly berated by his mom for acting rudely towards his step-father. Jack understood to an extent, but it didn't hurt him any less. Mitch wasn't any help either though, disliking this quick relationship with his ex, talking trash and fighting Jack any time he could. When Olivia and Mitch had their one-night stand while her and Jack were on a break, and she ending up pregnant with her first daughter, Lucas thought this was finally his parents time to get back together. Olivia, however, made it clear that her and Mitch were not going to be together again. This bother Luke, but it got him to truly understand the reality of it all. His parents still tried to get along with each other, and he still visited Toronto every winter and for playoffs. Him and Jack started to bond over hockey, though Mitch was the only one he would practice with other than his brothers. When he was 18, Lucas was the first overall draft for the Toronto Maple Leafs and became a legacy player. He brought the Leafs to the Stanley Cup in 2037, 10 years after his father did so.
Tumblr media
Myles Thomas Marner (@mylestmarner)
DOB: May 10th 2020 Age: 28 years old Hometown: Toronto, Ontario Nicknames: Mile, Miley S/O: Lilly Dunn Kids: Callie and Athena Best Friend(s): Jeremiah Wagner, Matteo Aguilar, and Braydon Pham Aesthetic: Myles, unlike his older brother, was obsessed with Jack. He was only 3 when he and Olivia started dating, but he already knew he was the coolest person he had ever met. Of course he loved his dad and wanted him to win at all times, but Jack just seemed so chill. Liv watched her son follow Jack around the rink and the house all day, she couldn't believe one of her sons was actually okay with her new boyfriend. Myles used to yell at his older brother whenever he gave Jack attitude. Jack thought this was the funniest thing ever. He loved having someone on his team rooting for him. When Henry was born, Myles was ready to get him on the ice right away, but Olivia and Jack had to help him take a step back, considering Harry couldn't even hold his head up just yet. You can bet though that Myles was the first to teach him anything when he could. In fact Henry's nickname, Haz or Hazzy, was given to him by his older half-brother. The nickname stuck well into his NHL career too. Miley was the 4th overall pick for the Carolina Hurricanes and he was pretty damn good.
Tumblr media
Lincoln Daniel Marner (@linc_m12)
DOB: July 21st 2023 Age: 25 years old Hometown: Hobokken, New Jersey Nicknames: Linc, Linny, Lake S/O: Reece Mercer Kids: None Best Friend(s): Jonah Matthews and Zachery Brandt Aesthetic: Lincoln grew up in New Jersey, which makes him a Devils fan. He wasn't all that big into hockey like his brothers though. In fact, in a house full of hockey players, he sort of felt left out. He and his mom were very close, big mama's boy. She knew how he felt and tried to explain to him that it was all good if he didn't want to play the majority sport. Lincoln still played with his brother and dads when he could, but honestly wished he could just cuddle up with Liv on the bench. Mitch saw how bent out of shape Linc was and knew immediately what was wrong. He never wanted to force this life on his kids, if they liked it (like Luke and Myles) great! If not, that was okay too. Mitch, having gone through it with his dad too, didn't want to do that to his son also. Jack on the other hand, wasn't aware of this and encouraged Lincoln whenever he could to get on the ice. He thought he was helping, believing that Lincoln was just insecure about his skating or something, but to Mitch it looked like peer pressure. Whilst visiting Toronto during the winter, the whole group joined the Leafs at family skate, including Jack. Once Mitch saw Jack "bothering" Linc to get on the ice with every, shit hit the fan. Mitch started beating Jack black and blue, only stopping when JT pulled him off him. Lincoln had ran away to the locker rooms, hiding in the corner. Olivia was too busy yelling at Mitch and helping Jack with his injuries to notice Auston skating away from the rink. He had stopped by in the locker room on his hunt for the missing boy, and saw Lincoln curled up in a ball near his dad's gear. Auston pulled Lincoln into his arms and soothed the little boy. They had a long talk, and this is when Auston found out that Linc was into baseball and had been wanting to play for a while but was just too scared too say anything. Auston brought this up to Liv and had set up a schedule for him to help practice with her son. He ended up being drafted for the New York Mets when he was 18 along with Auston's son Jonah, and has been playing there since. Jack had apologised to the kid and had been at every single baseball game Lincoln ever played.
Tumblr media
Madison Jay Marner (@maddiemarner)
DOB: February 13th 2029 Age: 19 years old Hometown: Hobokken, New Jersey Nicknames: Mads, Maddie, Sonny S/O: Spencer Reynolds Kids: None Best Friend(s): Arthur Hughes Aesthetic: Madison's story is a complicated one. Jack and Olivia had been on a break for about 2 months at the time her mother had gotten pregnant with her. Mitch and Olivia had a one night stand and it ended in Madison's conception. The competition between Jack and Mitch was now at all time high. When Olivia had told Mitch about it, he was excited, thinking that maybe he could get her back because of this, but she had the plans to abort Maddie, scared that she had completely messed up her family with Jack. She had already had two little boys with him, she knew he was a good father, she just didn't know how he would react to her being pregnant with her ex baby daddy's kid. Jack freaked out for a minute, staying at his mom's house for a week, before Ellen had talked some sense into him and he went back. He understood that they had been on a break and that he can't really be mad. Jack had continued to support Liv throughout this pregnancy, though he was weary having Mitch around now more than usual. Mitch had been making a point that this baby was his and that Jack shouldn't be included in this, refusing to let Jack in at appointments, not allowing him to be a part of baby showers and what not. Olivia had hated seeing Jack so excluded, knowing that Jack was going to be the one mainly around for the kid. When she had found out the gender she was so excited! Finally a girl to be on her side! Mitch had been now bragging about how he gave Olivia, not only her first kid, but now her first daughter too. Jack found this insufferable, and he was sad a little bit too. Liv had promised to include Jack in everything and now he couldn't even enjoy the thought of having a daughter because Mitch had made it his mission to remind him that this little girl wasn't his. When Madison was born however, Mitch was out of town, leaving Jack to be there in the delivery room when she made her entrance into this world. She was a big daddy's girl too…with Jack. She didn't really care for Mitch, funny considering he was so entitled to her before. Jack was wrapped around her finger the minute she was born, and sobbed when he got to hold her and when he saw that she was named after him. As Maddie grew up, Jack and Mitch's relationship got better, for the sake of her. She hated that her dads didn't get along, wanted them to love each other as much as she did them. No, that didn't exactly happen, but they did tolerate each other for her well-being.

hello party people! the stanley cup playoffs start right now, so in an attempt to tempt y’all to watch, i have compiled a list of playoff moments that altered my brain chemistry (as someone who has watched the playoffs every year since 2010)! even if you don’t want to watch hockey, the sport is pretty ridiculous so here is just a small sample of the extent of the craziness!
washington capitals vs. pittsburgh penguins 2009 (round 2 game 2): hockey’s messi and ronaldo, sidney crosby and alex ovechkin put on a show for the washington crowd as they each score hattys in the same game. the capitals would go on to win the game, but the penguins would win the series (and later the cup), but this game has some of the best highlights as the two best players in hockey at their peaks showed off their skills for sexy, sexy hockey!
chicago blackhawks vs. philadelphia flyers 2010 (round 4 game 6): in overtime of game 6 of the stanley cup finals, a chicago player scored the game winner to win the hawks the cup. the weird part? nobody saw it go in except the player and his teammates. the crowd, flyers, and broadcasters didn’t see it go in. known as the “phantom goal” this goal won the hawks their first cup in almost 50 years.
vancouver canucks vs. chicago blackhawks 2011 (round 1 game 7): this is the game that made me fall in love with hockey. little 7-year-old me was glued to my television screen all night watching this game. the blackhawks and canucks had matched up in the playoffs for three years in a row, and the blackhawks (at the time the reigning cup champions) had beat the canucks every time. this series had gone the full 7 games, with the canucks winning the first 3 and the blackhawks coming from behind to win the next 3. earlier in game 7, hero alex burrows had opened the scoring then missed a penalty shot. with the game tied at 1, just over 5 minutes into overtime, burrows gets the puck and scores, defeating the blackhawks to send the canucks to the next round. they would go on to lose the cup in the final, but this was the golden generation of canucks games and the vibe in vancouver? unmatched. it gave birth to two of the most iconic radio calls: “they slayed the dragon” by john shorthouse, and “its a wonderful day for an exorcism” from jim hughston. this defined my childhood fr
boston bruins vs. toronto maple leafs 2013 (round 1 game 7): mere weeks after the tragedy at the boston marathon, the bruins were down 4-1 with just over 14 minutes to play in the 3rd period. they were down 4-2 with 9 minutes left. with two goals in 30 seconds, with less than 90 seconds remaining, the bruins tied the game and patrice bergeron won the game for the bruins in overtime. the maple leafs, having blown a 3 goal lead, ended their season. as of right now, they have not won a round of the playoffs since 2004.
tampa bay lightning vs. boston bruins 2018 (round 2 game 4): the playoffs can get quite scrappy! in order to get an advantage over his opponent after a little scrum, noted league rat brad marchand licked a man. yes fully licked. previously in the playoffs he had kissed and licked another man, and this caused the league to outlaw licking. the bruins would go on to lose the series, even though marchand continued his ridiculous antics
vegas golden knights vs. vancouver canucks 2020 (round 2 games 5-7): in 2020, the playoffs were played in a bubble at one arena with no spectators. after game 4, that the knights won, it was discovered that the canucks goalie jacob markstrom had an injury. with the knights leading the series 3-1, the canucks needed to win 3 games in a row to move on to the next round. enter thatcher demko, a rookie goalie who had never played a playoff game before. over games 5, 6 and 7, demko made 123 saves, including a 48 save shutout in game 6, to keep the canucks in until game 7. he stood on his head, he was incredible, and he went over 100 minutes without the knights scoring a goal. unfortunately, with a knights shutout in game 7, the canucks wouldn’t move on, but “bubble demko” would live in infamy as thatcher demko’s intro to playoff hockey. hes my favourite goalie
pittsburgh penguins vs. new york rangers 2022 (round 1 game 1): as both teams were ready to fight it out in the playoffs, this game was tied at the end of three periods. in the playoffs, overtime lasts 20 minutes with 15 minute breaks between them. in the 3rd period of overtime, and the 6th period of hockey evgeni malkin scored for the penguins after over 90 minutes of hockey. it was midnight at madison square garden. the rangers goalie, igor shesterkin, made 79 saves in the loss, and the penguins goalie louis domingue, who came on in the second overtime to replace an injured casey desmith, went viral for reports that he ate spicy pork and broccoli between periods to keep up his energy. this is one of the longest games in nhl history, and the rangers would go on to win the series in 7 games.
edmonton oilers vs. calgary flames 2022 (round 2 game 1): the battle of alberta is one of the classic rivalries of the nhl, and the first game of last year’s round 2 delivered. the goalies seemed to be unable to keep the puck out of the net, and flames and oilers fans both watched as the two teams combined for 15 goals, with the flames winning 9-6. the oilers would go on to win the series, but the sloppy, goal-heavy hockey has stuck in my mind ever since last may
these are some of my highlights! i hope you all enjoy the playoffs (because i know i will), and all the beard-growing and towel-twirling that comes along with them. happy stanley cup season everyone!

“Josi, whose NHL team was beaten by Hughes’ Vancouver Canucks in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs last spring, has been a Norris finalist three times in five years but had one of his poorest seasons after winning the award as hockey’s top defenceman in 2020.
Josi’s inclusion at the camp meant fewer puck touches but more knowledge for Hughes.
“I did take away some things from him that I’m going to keep to myself,” Hughes told Sportsnet Friday during a phone call from Michigan. “But I will say one thing Josi told me. He won his first Norris and he said, 'I've got to win another one.' And then he didn’t have a great year. And the year after that he had a crazy year (and finished second to Cale Makar in 2022 Norris voting).
“I think his point was, you've just got to continue to be yourself. You don't have to push the envelope too, too hard. And I completely agree with that. Less is more sometimes. You've got to listen to your body, listen to your mind. I took nine weeks off because I do think less is more. But when I train, I do everything with a purpose. I'm very purposeful.””

lets talk about tyler seguin brainrot because like he had triumph and tragedy very early on and then he was the party boy who everybody wagged their finger at and then once he finally decide to settle down and take everything seriously the guy hes soulbound himself to in the early days went the opposite of growth and turned into a asshole werido so now HE's suppose to be the adult who drags them to success
man are you the same person who asked me about the nolpat brain rot and the mtkachuk brain rot or are there just multiple people on this website that like seeing me spiral via essay? but yeah okay i can do segs brain rot. and i won't even write an essay this time. mostly. i lied.
but yeah okay. tyler drafted 2nd overall in 2010 to the bruins, a team that only had that pick because they got it from toronto. in reality, the bruins never should have picked that high because they had just come off a season where they made it to the second round of playoffs. of the top 15 picks in that draft, he had the best chance of winning a cup soon. and he did. 74 games in the season, 13 games in playoffs, a seven game finals series, and a stanley cup ring. then two more seasons under his belt, and he even made it back to the finals in 2013, but they lost six to chicago. and then things started to fall apart. boston trades him to dallas and the rumours and speculations follow him, saying he would rather party than practice and doubting his dedication to his team and it's just a really bad look when a team dumps a SOA after only three years, after winning a cup with him, after making it to the finals twice with him. bad look. but it's okay. he comes to dallas and the team help him build a home here and he finds a best friend in this guy who is about to become his captain too. something in dallas clearly clicked a switch in his brain, because he started playing beautiful hockey and his name and jamies are being tossed around together like crosby and malkin, and kane and toews, and ovechkin and backstrom. they were supposed to be winners together. supposed to make history, together. but dallas isn't like boston and they don't win immediately but it's fine because they're building something great still and tyler is willing to wait for that. he wants to win here too. he grows into himself as a person and as a leader and he eventually gets an A and he looks after rookies on and off the ice and he helps them avoid the same mistakes he made when he was just a kid with too much money and the world at his fingertips and dallas stars getting better and making deeper runs and then its 2020 and hes finally back. tyler seguin and the stanley cup finals meet once again. and tyler is the guy they're turning to for advice because he's the only guy who has been to the finals more than once in his career and he has a cup and there's not many other guys on the team who have that either. and they lose in six. and now its 2023 and a lot has changed. aside from jamie, he's been on the team the longest. and it's game three of the western conference finals and the captain just took a stupid penalty and got himself ejected from the game and everything falls apart again. the game goes to shit and they're down 3-0 in the series and jamie is suspended for two games but. but. they win those two games. they win and they win and then jamie is back and. they lose. 6-0. and his season ends in may.

"Currently, to qualify for automatic engraving, a player:
Must have played, or have dressed as the backup goaltender, for at least half of the championship team's regular season games. OR:
Must have played, or have dressed as the backup goaltender, for at least one game of the Stanley Cup Finals for the championship team, AND:
Must be on the roster when the team wins the Stanley Cup."
Briss does not meet any of these criteria (Lukas doesn't meet the criteria either). He hasn't even made his NHL debut yet!!
Again, being a black ace is a specific thing for playoffs. See this article.

Stuff I'm Looking Forward To in June
Can't believe we're now into the Summer season! In addition to LGBTQ+ Pride Month (6/1-6/30), Flag Day (6/14), Father's Day (6/16), Eid al-Adha (6/17), Juneteenth (6/19), and first day of Summer (6/20), as well as NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Playoffs, here is what's on my radar this month:
Movies:
Brats
Since his starring roles in 80s movies like Pretty in Pink, Less Than Zero and Mannequin, Andrew McCarthy has actually become a very prolific director. Now he's directing a documentary about the group of young actors in the 80s known as the Brat Pack that he was a part of. In this doc he looks at the phenomena and tracks down his peers today to look back on the influence it had on their career. Premieres on Hulu on 6/13!
Inside Out 2
Pixar's Inside Out was among my Top 5 Movies of 2015. Looking forward to this return of the inner workings of a tween girl. Opens 6/14.
Tuesday
At IFFBoston last month, there was a film I missed that I wanted to see. The always good Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a comic genius, but she’s flexed her dramatic muscles in films like You Hurt My Feelings. In this fantasy, she plays a mother who must confront death with her teenage daughter in the form of a talking bird. Opens 6/14 (review to come).
A Quiet Place: Day One
John Krasinki's excellent horror movie A Quiet Place was one of my Best Movies of 2018 and the sequel was one of my Best Movies of 2021. This new spin-off about a the initial invasion in NYC is not directed by Krasinski, but it does star Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o! Opens 6/28.
Music:
Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs Vagabonds, Virgins and Misfits
Guitarist Mike Campbell of The Heartbreakers and more recently Fleetwood Mac, released his first album with his band The Dirty Knobs Wreckless Abandon in 2020 and it was an impressive debut. The band's third album is dropping 6/12 (review to come).
Paul McCartney & Wings One Hand Clapping
In 1974, Paul McCartney and Wings went to Abbey Road Studios for a documentary and a possible live album. That album was never released, but it has become an in-demand bootleg over the years with select tracks appearing on special editions here and there. Now it is finally getting an official release on 6/14.
Wilco Hot Sun Cool Shroud
A Wilco release is always a high priority for me and this new EP featuring 6 new songs from the Cousins sessions is coinciding with the release of their Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, MA. EP drops on 6/28 (review to come).
TV:
The Acolyte
The newest live action Star Wars series is here. This one is set 100 years before the events of Episode 1. Premieres on Disney+ on 6/4.
Conventions:
Fan Expo Boston
The annual Boston comic con hits the Hynes Convention Center (after being in the Seaport for a few years). Some of the guests that will be appearing include Vincent D'Onofrio, Rose McGowan, Chevy Chase (and a ton of Vacation stars), Marisa Tomei, Rosario Dawson, Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Raimi. Convention is from 6/14-6/16 (watch for my coverage).
Super Megafest
As if Fan Expo Boston wasn't enough, the annual Super Megafest comic convention is at the Verve Hotel in Natick. Guests include Sid Krofft (and a number of cast members from his shows), Kiss's Bruce Kulick, Christopher Atkins and more. Convention is from 6/28-6/30.
