Test Drive: Why the 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition Is Worth a Look

Don’t dismiss the sleeper sports sedan with all-wheel drive and an NSX paint job.

DETROIT--A quick recap of the car I've recently test-driven for this review: Shortly before Acura unveiled its enticing 2021 TLX sedan, Honda's premium/sport marque assembled 360 examples of the outgoing model at its Performance Manufacturing Center, which normally hand-builds the NSX hybrid supercar. The 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition is painted Valencia red pearl previously limited to the NSX, with a nano-pigment technology that "produces exceptionally high color saturation and deep levels of contrast." Shortly after Acura's PMC completed its run of TLXs earlier this year, it assembled 330 MDX SUVs in the same paint color.

The bottom line on the 2021 Acura TLX PMC Edition's window sticker is just shy of $50,000, which might seem a bit excessive for a marque that is in the process of emphasizing its performance image over its long-struggling premium/luxury image. As for the NSX Valencia red pearl paint, though, it looks flawless to these eyes. What's more, that bottom line for the PMC is just $2,600 more expensive than a 2020 Acura TLX SH-AWD with Advance package, painted, say, Performance Red Pearl. However, with the new model on the way, you're likely to find bigger price breaks on the car assembled at the automated factory than in the NSX sector.

What really makes the TLX special and worth the money is its combination of Acura's super-handling all-wheel drive--Honda's variation on torque-vectoring--and its excellent steering precision, feedback, and weight. Steering historically has not been Acura's strong suit, though the NSX has always been an exception, and chassis engineers have done a good job of extending this quality to the rest of the lineup. All-wheel drive historically has not been my favorite method of bringing a transverse-engine, front-drive-based car up to longitudinal-engine, rear-drive sports-sedan handling levels, but SH-AWD has proved to be a credible alternative.

SH-AWD makes sure the 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition like the one featured in this test drive handles quick curves with a neutral attitude, though you can feel the impending understeer until you lift the throttle mid-turn and the nose comes back to you.

The naturally aspirated, 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 that comes with all SH-AWD TLX models (a 2.4-liter, 206-hp I-4 is standard on FWD models, with the V-6 optional), works nicely in concert with this chassis. The launch is not overly torquey, but this engine offers a fat mid-range which enhanced by unusually useful manual-shift paddle controls for gearing up and down the automatic's nine speeds. This makes for a sport sedan that exceeds its reach, perhaps not as an alternative to the Genesis G70, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, or Cadillac CT4-V, but certainly to the Audi S4, for example.

In Acura's marketing move to emphasize its performance creds, the 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition marks a nice gap between commodity brands like Honda and the expensive, overtly premium luxury brands. The TLX is an overachieving sports sedan for enthusiasts who don't want to pay premium prices for luxury badges. For an extra $2,600, the 2020 Acura TLX PMC Edition is absolutely a worthy garagemate for people lucky enough to own an NSX.

2020 Acura NSX First Test: Fine Motor Control

Putting the words “hybrid” and “supercar” next to each other in 2010 would have been a mistake. That, or an oxymoron made to poke fun at the dullness hybrids were (and are still) typically derided for. In the middle of the decade the Porsche 918 transformed the conjunctive “hybrid-supercar” from irony to fantasy, but it was reserved only for those with immense personal capital. The 2020 NSX is proof that the formula set out by the 918 is alive and well today, but now it can be had for less than a quarter of the price.

The first time I drove the NSX earlier this year—a 2019 car—my time with it was limited to an afternoon. My initial impression? Quick with a capital Q. Fair enough, considering the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 and three electric motors combine for 573 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque.

When I got home that night and told my friends and family I’d driven a supercar that day, the first thing they asked was, “How fast is it?” I suspect they meant quick, not fast. Alas, MotorTrend hadn’t tested a refreshed NSX, and I could only quote old numbers. According to our testing, a 2017 NSX dispatched the 0–60 sprint in 3.1 seconds and raced through the quarter mile in 11.3 seconds at 123.6 mph. Impressions confirmed.

Fast-forward to December and what rocks up to MotorTrend’s front door? None other than a brand-new Acura NSX, this time a 2020, resplendent in Indy Yellow Pearl. These things just keep finding me. This time it’s in for testing, too, and I was to be the $164,695 super-hybrid’s keeper for much longer than just a few hours this time.

First order of business was an obligatory trip the test track. On the 40-mile drive there I expected to be knocked around by a stiff ride and irritating engine drone, the normal supercar compromises. But the NSX didn’t show any of them. The ride, while firm, isn’t any harsher than a 911 Carrera S set to Comfort mode. Lumps and bumps only result in small rattles, and the NSX was rarely upset by road imperfections.

Leave it in Quiet mode, and the V-6 acts as nothing more than a ballast. When restricted to its most docile the NSX was cruising along at speeds of up to 55 mph as a pure EV. Talk about easy. Eventually it was time for a little theater, so I turned the dial into Sport+ mode to crack open the exhaust. The engine comes to life instantly with a deep yowl. Mash the gas, and a whoosh of intake gurgle fills the cabin. The brisk shifts of the nine-speed DCT make it easy to experience the motor-on song over and over. Sonorous? No. Satisfying? Oh, yes.

A post-refresh NSX gets you stiffer toe-link bushings, larger front and rear anti-roll bars, a body-colored beak instead of a chrome one, and, perhaps most important, new rubber. The standard tire is the new Continental SportContact 6, tailor-made for the NSX and measuring 245/35ZR19 up front and 305/30ZR20 out back. Pirelli P Zero Trofeo Rs remain an option.

The options on our test car weren’t exactly performance enhancing, though. A $3,000 carbon-fiber wing, $700 red brake calipers, and $500 for a satellite radio package–which I used not once—was all we got. No ceramic brakes or Trofeo Rs here.

At the track, it was time to see if the changes Acura made to the NSX would net improvements or otherwise. Launching the NSX is, frankly, too easy. Twist the drive select knob all the way to the right and hold steady for a few seconds to engage Track mode, depress both pedals for a moment, and remove your left foot from the brake. Bang. Off you go.

“Quicker than I remember it being, and more thrilling, too,” road test editor and acceleration guru Chris Walton said. The NSX now rushes to 60 mph in 3 seconds flat and through the quarter mile in just 11.2 seconds at 124.0 mph.

In 2017, an NSX equipped with optional Pirelli P Zero Trofeo Rs and ceramic brakes stopped from 60 in a world-class 95 feet. The 2020 car we tested lacked both the fancy brakes and the track-ready rubber. Its 101-foot stop was still good, but far off the mark of something like a 992 Carrera S, which made the same stop in just 94 feet (and can be had for far less money).

Although it’s easy to scoff at a brake-by-wire system, in the NSX it gets rid of any carbon-ceramic pedal weirdness. The orange car I drove in July had the ceramics, and the pedal felt identical to the yellow car we had for this test, equipped with steelies.

Although the brake pedal lacks feel under hard braking, it is beautifully linear all the way into the ABS. The stopping power is always at the top of the pedal when driving hard on a good piece of road, and the brakes are easy to modulate. The more you press the pedal, the more braking you get.

Around the figure eight, the new NSX posted a 23.8-second lap, six-tenths off the pace of the 2017 car—keep in mind the old car’s racy tires, though. It also pulled 1.00 g around the figure eight, three-hundredths down from our previous test. Testing director Kim Reynolds noted abrupt brake fade, though.

“I had to bail out of a couple of corners because I couldn’t stop soon enough,” Reynolds said. Maybe the ceramics would have been a good idea. “Good power, though, and shifting is really great. This car used to have an overwhelming video game quality to its handling, but now it’s genuinely authentic and fun.”

Less video gamey though it may feel, the NSX’s quirks still abound. The rinky-dink cupholder (which feels like it’s been lifted out of a Honda Insight) means you’re guaranteed to spill your grande mocha latte all over the Ivory leather interior—as I did, twice. There’s still no place to put your sunglasses, and the trunk is so small it borders on useless.

The inclusion of Honda’s previous-gen infotainment setup is almost inexcusable at this price, and we’re thankful for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Look into the driver’s-side footwell, and you’ll no doubt notice exposed wiring looms and frayed carpeting. Interior quality simply doesn’t befit the $160,000 price tag. Much nicer insides can be had for the same money (@AudiR8, @Porsche911, @AMGanything). Oh, and fuel economy doesn’t really say “hybrid,” either. We averaged just 17 mpg in our time with the car. Luckily, the rest of the car makes up for these faults.

Despite the quirks and the unfinished interior, the NSX is plugged in. The second your butt finds its way into the low-slung seat and your hands wrap themselves around the cold leather steering wheel, the NSX knows what to do. Gas mileage and cupholders be damned, let’s just go fast. And after carefully chaperoning the NSX to the test track and wowing my girlfriend, her parents, and my parents, I decided that was enough showing off. It was time to see if the refreshed NSX drove as sharp as it looked.

On a good road the NSX isn’t just quick, it’s a bully. The two electric motors up front claw at the road in the quest for extra grip at all times. The SH-AWD system overdrives the outside front wheel, and the effect is, essentially, added turn-in. The NSX is easy to push, even if your fists are made of ham, and as features editor Christian Seabaugh noted, there’s a truly disgusting amount of midcorner grip.

Though it bullies a road into submission, the NSX is always friendly to its driver. Perhaps the best thing about driving the NSX is you’re rarely penalized for making a mistake on the road. Overshooting a slow corner isn’t met with punishing understeer. Being too enthusiastic with the throttle won’t result in a big slide, or worse. Instead, the NSX calmly puts its hand on your shoulder and urges you to give the road and the car your full attention. It’s for the best.

When we first drove the NSX in 2015 we said Acura let us drive it a few years too early. Now that those years have passed, we’re left with the car we wanted in the first place. Even if the interior is still an ergonomic nightmare and the mpg is still awful, the changes Acura made to the 2020 NSX turn it into a $160,000 super-hybrid that’s worth its price tag. Oh, and your R8 can’t cruise around in EV mode, can it?

The Audi R8: Origins, Generations, Specifications

Audi R8 Essential History Despite a rich motorsports history with overwhelming success in both rallying and endurance racing, Audi's always remained at arm's length when it came to producing a true sports car. The once-popular Audi TT has most of the right ingredients, but the front-wheel-drive underpinnings pulled primarily from the VW Golf kept it well below the Porsche Boxster, Nissan Z cars, and BMW's assorted roadsters and two-seat coupes.

Since the early 1980s, Audi remained content developing high-performance versions of its premium coupes and sedans, focusing on promoting all-wheel drive technology and turbocharged engines, even if the resulting speed-specials were softer and more road-oriented than the adrenalin-charging weapons from Mercedes-Benz' AMG or BMW's M division.

It was only during the early-2000s when the reality of an Audi supercar began to coalesce, born from Audi's ongoing Le Mans domination and the then-recent acquisition of Lamborghini by the Volkswagen Auto Group. To amortize the cost of development of the nascent Lamborghini Gallardo and to bring Audi a little closer in-line with Mercedes and BMW, the plan for the mid-engine Audi R8—the brand's first supercar—took shape with the Le Mans Quattro concept in 2003.

Audi Le Mans Quattro Concept Visually, the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept was nearly identical to the production R8 that arrived in 2007, though the wild twin-turbo V-10 engine was tossed for a more production-friendly iteration of Audi's naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V-8. Power was reasonable for a mid-engine sports car of the era, with 414 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque sent to all-four wheels through either Audi's R-Tronic six-speed automated manual or a gated six-speed manual transmission. Zero-to-60-mph times for these early R8s were around the low four-second mark, with a top speed around 188 mph.

The Audi R8 Goes V-10 For the 2009 model year, the R8's Lamborghini roots shone in full-force, when the updated 5.2-liter V-10 from the Lamborghini LP560-4 was shoehorned into the R8. Fun fact—that Lamborghini V-10 is actually an Audi V-10 pulled from the S6 and S8. So, the R8 V10 actually uses an Audi V-10 pulled from a Lamborghini, but we digress. The V-10 engine increased the R8's output to 518 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, dropping the zero-to-60 mph sprint to 3.9 seconds, and raising top speed to 196 mph.

The Audi R8 Spyder Drop-top Spyder variants launched for both the V-8 and the V-10 models, with the V-8 adding an extra 14 horsepower over the V-8 coupe, growing the total to 428 horsepower, though torque remained unchanged at 317 lb-ft. The limited edition R8 GT arrived in 2011, cutting 220 pounds from the curb weight of the regular R8 V10, while increasing the V-10's output to 552 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. As you'd expect, the R8 GT also brought with it a range of suspension, braking, and aerodynamic upgrades over the regular car to compensate for the additional power and to enlarge the overall performance envelope. Production of the GT was limited to 333 units worldwide, with an additional 333 unit run of the corresponding R8 GT Spyder.

The first-generation R8 received a mid-cycle refresh for 2012 in the rest of the world, arriving in the U.S. in 2013 as a 2014 model year. The refresh brought mostly aesthetic updates, though a few significant mechanical upgrades were also brought to the R8, most significantly a new seven-speed dual-clutch replacing the balky R-Tronic automated manual transmission. Standard magnetic damping was also added for the R8 V10, an optional upgrade for the V-8 models.

The R8 V10 Plus arrived on our shores in 2014, adding a new range-topping trim with extra power and performance in the same vein as the older R8 GT.
