things i noted on my 2nd watch of Twisters (2024)
where each song from the soundtrack plays (idk how many times i listened to it but y’all there was hell or high water playing at the diner when Javi was talking to Riggs and i felt like my third eye opened lmaooooo)
Dexter nerding out over everything (noticed this before but like 🥰🤧 this old man has my heart y’all 🥺 do you see how excited he gets mapping out the terrain and remembering which tornado effect is which???? yeah sure he probably never went to university or finished high school but you can see his love for learning and education and i bet he read every book in every library he visits)
white shirt OT3 o7 (Kate begins the white shirt effect and then it switches to Tyler and switches back to Kate then switches to Javi which switches to Tyler at the end. now, you could argue that Javi begins the white shirt effect bc Storm Par includes white shirts in their uniforms but NO! because they’re polos AND Javi wears the blue and black uniform. so truly the real argument would be Scott wore it but he’s separate from the OT3 and is meant to draw Javi away unlike Kate and Tyler and in this essay—)
Boone not answering Tyler calls (like, last time i did see when Tyler was asking Boone for forgiveness when he chased a tornado with Kate instead of Boone but the fact that Tyler only called Lily because Boone wasn’t answering just adds to that lmao)
Tyler being all shy and sweet with Kate (yeah i saw it before last time but like 🥺 he’s such a sweetie with his little crush and little smile and trying to act all cool asking for her opinion about where the twister is like 🤧🤧 adorable)
Lily teasing and being a great wingman (calling out his red face and handing Kate the food. and ok, yeah, sure, it’s a lot more likely that she didn’t see Kate and Tyler have a mini argument where Kate assumes the worst of them, but i like to think she saw how it ended and decided to clear the air her own way)
Benjamin Shopshire III (100% laughed when i read that name, i’m so sorry Ben lmao)
Mrs Carter’s narrative similarities to Aunt Meg (bbq & steak and eggs; team loving protag’s relative; not taking protag’s bs)
dead bf’s name is Jeb not Jeff (pretty sure that’s short for something but i have never heard of a Jeb before)
Tyler complimenting Javi’s radar (solely for OT3 purposes)
“Storm Par” & “Owens” (very much the when a name begins toned derogatory but ends the story affectionate)
they never specify which branch of the military Javi’s from (…….it’s free real estate)
Never Left Me plays when Javi and Kate are driving into Oklahoma (very much seals the “there was a time i’d do anything for you” quote)
but yeah there’s some. imma be letting it all soak in my brain while i rot ✌️

Fruits Basket Ao3 Media Tags Poll Results, and Some Thoughts on Ao3 Fandom Tag Wrangling
Over the past few weeks, I've put out a few polls to find out how other Ao3 users are using the different Fruits Basket media tags. Here are the results!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Obligatory disclaimer that a tumblr poll by one user with fewer than 50 followers is hardly scientific data)
For writers, it looks like most of us (52.6%, or 10 out of 19 respondents) are tagging more than one media type every time, and an additional 10.5% are sometimes tagging multiple media types (total of 63.1%, or 12 out of 19). 31.6%, or 6 out of 19, are only tagging one media type. I believe the person who selected "other" hasn't posted Fruits Basket work yet, but indicated they'd be likely to tag all three.
Of note: even though far more works are tagged with the manga tag than either anime, including when I excluded crossovers, the 2019 anime had the most works updated since January 1 of this year excluding crossovers at 25 (vs 4 for the 2001 anime, and 12 for the manga).
For readers, it looks like most of us (46.4%, or 13 out of 28) are filtering by relationship or character. (Sometimes I think I must be the only person who will read fics for any relationship or character if the premise is interesting!) For those who search using media tags, the manga tag is by far the most used at 17.9%, or 5 out of 28.
Then, 50%, or 14 out of 28 readers don't expect anything different between the three media tags. And that number raises to 78.6%, or 22 out of 28, if you include people who only expect minor differences between content found at each of the three tags.
So, why did I do these polls (and what are my thoughts on how these tags should be wrangled)? More info below the cut!
At some point between when I joined Ao3 and now, the tag "Fruits Basket" went from being a metatag that contained all 3 Fruits Basket media to being made a synonym of the manga.
In practical terms, what this meant for me was that I could no longer sort or filter all Fruits Basket works at once. I would instead have to go to all three media tags separately, and would have to repeat searches for all three media tags if I was looking for a specific trope. Additionally, I didn't actually realize this change until a couple of months after it occurred. I almost missed one of my now-favorite fics because of this change!
Worse still, it means that when I filter out crossovers, any works that are tagged with more than one Fruits Basket media are considered as "crossovers." If I want to filter out actual crossovers, it needs to be done by manually clicking all other fandoms under the "exclude" option.
So, I sent a support ticket to Ao3 asking them to either reverse this change, or add a similar "All Media Types" sort of tag.
They responded after about 12 days, letting me know that the Archive is no longer creating "All Media Types" tags, and is actually dismantling them where possible. The goal is for users to be able to find what they're looking for, and to avoid confusion, which apparently "All Media Types" tags can cause, both for creators and browsing users. They pointed out that searching by relationship or character would allow me to see all works across media tags with those characters (although this doesn't solve my problem).
(Note: no shade to this Ao3 volunteer - I'm not upset at this answer, and they were only communicating Archive policy and were very professional and gave me good and important info!)
Anyway, this confused me, so I sat with it for a bit. I did some searches of the Ao3 blog, the Reddit and Tumblr, and some tag wrangler's Tumblrs where they talk about tag wrangling, but couldn't find anything about dismantling "All Media Types" metatags. So, I decided to get some data. Hence, the polls.
Other than my continued surprise at how many people search by relationship (multishipper problems...), the polls basically aligned with what I expected. So, if I'm using the tags in a similar way to most other users, this can't be the best way for these tags to exist.
I sent a followup request outlining some of what I shared here, then decided to browse Ao3 fandoms outside of Fruits Basket to see how other fandom tags, especially anime/manga fandom tags, were generally canonized.
On the Fandoms page, several "All Media Types" tags are present (Star Wars, Les Mis, Newsies, Batman, and Captain America, to name a few). Additionally, several "& Related Fandoms" tags are also present.
But this might not be a fair comparison. Star Wars has had movies, TV shows, comics, novels, video games, audio novels, radio adaptations, theme park rides, and more. A broad metatag makes sense for that fandom.
Or maybe the Archive just hasn't dismantled those "All Media Types" tags yet?
So, what about other anime and manga? Well, several (including the extremely popular BNHA and Naruto, as well as the shoujo that's always being compared to Furuba, OHSHC) are canonized as (Anime & Manga). Some (like Haikyuu!! and AoT) are canonized so both the manga and the anime are synonyms to the overarching fandom name.
And what about a manga that had two adaptations? Well, Fullmetal Alchemist has an "All Media Types" tag, which acts as a catchall for the 2003 anime, the live action, Bluebird's Illusion (which is apparently a fan-made game?), and a single tag combining the manga and Brotherhood.
So then, I did another search for information on how the Archive is handling "All Media Types" tags.
That search led me to a Tumblr post on tag wrangling guidelines from way back in 2013. Obviously, that post was out of date, but it led me to a handful of other posts, and eventually to the tag wrangling guidelines on the Ao3 website.
I actually didn't know the wrangling guidelines were publicly available before this, so this was exciting! After some brief searching, I was able to find some relevant policies:
Wrangling Guidelines - Metatags still mentioned "All Media Types" metatags in their guidelines, so perhaps those guidelines are out of date? Or instead, they're for those exceptions where "All Media Types" tags make sense?
That page led me to Wrangling Guidelines - Fandoms, which was MUCH more informative.
Under "Base Rules" > "Shared & Similar Names/Multiple Media" > "General Disambiguation Suffixes" it says:
General Disambiguation Suffixes are a legacy disambiguation format and last-resort disambiguation options for fandom tags that could not be easily separated into specific media. Fandoms disambiguated in these ways are no longer being created and are being removed where possible.
General Disambiguation Suffixes includes "All Media Types," "& Related Fandoms," and "Ambiguous Fandom."
Under "Fandoms With Multiple Media" it says:
Existing "All Media Types" tags may have new subtags added beneath them, but should no longer be created. The different existing media tags can be made into subtags under this metatag, as they are added to the Archive. There is no need to make an "All Media Types" metatag just to connect fandoms. Such fandoms can simply sit separately.
Bleh. I guess my hopes have been dashed.
...
But wait!
Under "Anime and Manga" > "Disambiguation Between Manga, Manhwa, Manhua, & Anime" it says:
Anime and manga fandoms should be canonised separately as much as possible. For fandoms where the completed manga and anime canons overlap enough to be considered one unified canon, or the user-made works do not specify whether they are for the anime or the manga, the disambig may be (Anime & Manga), with the terms in alphabetical order.
If canons do not overlap and users make tags for the separate canons, disambiguate with (Anime), (Manga), (Manhwa), or (Manhua).
For this second quote, IT USES FRUITS BASKET AS THE EXAMPLE.
Tumblr media
So, I guess the tag wrangler(s) for Fruits Basket consider the manga and the (unspecified which) anime to... not overlap? Or not overlap enough? Again, this confuses me. The 2019 anime covered all of canon and only had extremely minor changes, and those were mostly done just to make it work better in animation instead of print. The 2001 anime only covered the first third or so of the story and had some bigger changes, but nothing outside the realm of what a fan might change in a fanwork for the manga.
So, what do I think would be the best outcome for the Fruits Basket media tags on Ao3?
When I think about it, I could see people who had only seen the 2001 anime benefiting from being able to search only for works relating to the 2001 anime. And I could see people who have read the manga/seen the 2019 anime being annoyed if the major changes of the 2001 anime were referenced on works tagged to the manga/2019 anime. But I can't really see that happening between the manga and the 2019 anime. Those changes were so minute, I doubt they'd be relevant most of the time.
So, with the caveat that I'm only one user, and I don't know for sure if my opinion is the one held by most users in the Fruits Basket fandom, here are some potential solutions that would work for me & (I believe) for most users in the Fruits Basket fandom:
bring back "Fruits Basket" as a metatag for all 3 media types, or
make the manga tag synonymous with the 2019 anime, with the new canonical reading [Fruits Basket (Anime 2019 & Manga)], and make the 2001 anime a subtag of that new combined tag, or
make both anime tags subtags of the manga tag
Anyway, if you wanted to know what I've been doing instead of writing over the past few weeks, this is it. 😅 I'd really love to hear what you think of my proposed solutions, and if the change caused problems for you as it did for me, or if it actually made things easier.
Info about another tag wrangling issue for Fruits Basket coming soon in a separate (much shorter!) post!

You seem to know a lot about AO3, do you know how to engage more of your readers? I’ve been trying to get comments on my fics but all I get is kudos. I just want to know if people are enjoying my writing
Hi there! I definitely wouldn't say I'm an expert when it comes to AO3, but I find the fandom culture around AO3 to be really interesting, so I do talk about it a lot, haha. I've only been posting works there since 2019, though, and I'm sure folks who have been doing so for longer or have volunteered as tag wranglers or on the policy & abuse committee, for example, would know a lot more than I do. <3
But I'm really sorry to hear that you only get kudos and no comments on your fics! That really sucks. :( Like you said, you have no idea what those people actually think about what you made—just that they consumed it.
Honestly, I'm not sure I'm a good person to ask about getting readers to interact because I post both fanart and fanfics, which isn't super common, at least among people I know. I'm pretty sure that most of the folks who comment on my works followed me from Tumblr to AO3 back when I used to post art here. If I wanted to share nsfw images, I could only post cropped versions of them on Tumblr, so I would sometimes do that and link to the full image over on AO3. I suspect that's a big reason why I even have subscribers on AO3, haha. My writing certainly isn't better than that of plenty of people who also write for very niche ships and don't get as many kind comments as I do.
I also started out in my current fandom making art and writing about more popular characters until I quickly shifted focus when I found some that I like much more 😂 But I'm sure that quite a few people found my stuff because of those old works, and some of them probably stuck around.
Speaking of popular... This isn't something I do because I'm only motivated to make things that I like, but of course, there's always the 'write stuff for popular ships/characters' option. :/ Even now, when I happen to include fan favorites in my fics or art, all kinds of people come out of the woodwork to comment on them. And because I'm a contrary ass, that then makes me not want to create works featuring those ships or characters XD;;; But anyway, that is one option, haha.
A friend recently told me that they started asking little questions in the notes of each chapter of their fics, and that seemed to encourage readers to respond in the comments, so maybe that would be a good thing to try? I haven't tested it, so I can't say.
One thing I have tried that I think has made a difference is adding a blurb in the end notes of my works that I got from @longlivefeedback! They have a great template that you can customize and try out if you like (just make sure to read the bug fix part about curly/smart quotes versus straight quotes, since the curly quotes will kill your html).
One tried and true method to get more people commenting on your fics, of course, is to get to know people who also like the fandom/characters/ships you write about. Read some of their stuff or comment on their art or just chat about headcanons etc. And maybe they'll check out what you wrote.
(My caveat to this would be: do not do this with the sole purpose of getting someone to comment on your fics. I've had plenty of people do this to me, and it was so transparent that they had no interest in me as a person, but just wanted me to draw their OCs or scenes from their fic, or reblog their art, etc. Trying to manipulate someone like that just for your own gain is such gross behavior, and of course, I'm not saying you would do it, but it's common enough that I wanted to mention it 😓)
Okay, unsurprisingly, this got very long and rambling, haha. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but I hope you get more folks interested in your writing!
I'd be curious to know if other people have advice for @sonofhighrock! :)

Coalition Pinned Post: About Us, How to Join, Important Links.
What is the Coalition?
This is the home of the Homestuck Fanauthor Coalition, a discord-based writing club for fanauthors of all things Homestuck! Any current or aspiring author of Homestuck fanfic is encouraged to join, with the caveat that they understand this is a place for those who have a commitment to bolstering creativity in the Homestuck fandom. We provide a space for brainstorming, proofreading, beta-reading, co-writing, and all other forms of collaboration you can think of! We uplift each-other's works and encourage each-other to keep creating. We are mostly AO3-based authors, but several of us also write MSPFAs, and a few of us even write fangames! So whatever your homestuck writing project, you can find a place among us.
As part of this, we have two AO3 Collections.
Homestuck FanAuthor Coalition Fic and Recommendations is broken into two sub-collections: Our Stuff, which attempts to catalog ever member's works, and Our Recommendations, through which we suggest fic we've read to each-other, mostly written by those not in the Coalition.
Homestuck Fanauthor Coalition Writing Competitions is where we host our competition fics! We all vote together on a prompt, then write our works anonymously, submitting them to a hidden subcollection. Once the works are due, they are revealed, and everyone (not just the participants) gets to read the fics. We then vote on a series of "best in" genres, leave a compliment, and try to guess the identity of the author. At the end, everyone gets a digital medal! It's good fun.
Our Identities, with Ao3 & Tumblr links [below the cut for length]:
Since it's pretty darn hard for the layman to find at a glance, here is our member list. We'll try to keep this up-to-date. This section is under construction, members will likely want to edit their blurbs. Right now we are trying to re-order in the order of joining us!
@thegoodthebadthealternative @madam-melon-meow / Madam_Melon_Meow on Ao3: the founder of the Coalition, M^3 has been a Homestuck fan since 2014, but only started writing fic herself in 2023, alongside her fiance Celery! It is her firm belief that fanfic is the lifeblood of fandom, and she wanted to create a space where authors and editors could meet on equal footing, rather than gather in servers dedicated to one author's fanfic, or servers generally dedicated to Homestuck itself. She saw an empty niche and decided to fill it.
@thegoodthebadthealternative @arealpeople / sarcasticcelery on Ao3: an admin of the Coalition, Celery has been in fandom since late 2018, and was 75% through Homestuck proper when the epilogues came out, so he had an interesting introduction to the community. He is of the opinion that no work of media should be left deconstructed, and that all art should be shared- especially the ugly stuff. He hopes the coalition will facilitate this in the rich seedbed that is Homestuck.
@taglineguerrillawriter @orangestorapples / orangestorapples on Ao3: Orange is one of the bot wranglers for the Coalition discord, and they started writing fic WAAAAAAY back in 2015 on WATTPAD of all things! (I know, they're old 💀) They didn't join the homestuck fandom until 2019. Orange shares the same belief as M^3, about fanfic being an important facet of keeping fandom alive, and come hell or high water they're gonna contribute.

how I think svt texts in the gc pt.1
seungcheol: gym bro. texts “good morning” at 8am on the dot every day. constantly sending motivational speeches. mediator and unofficial wrangler, he’s always trying to organize shit and get proper answers from people. only one who can drop a workout selfie without being torn to shreds
junhui: erratic. has periods where he’s spamming the gc 24/7, then will ignore it for a month. texts like a five-year-old. will send pictures of a random pigeon he saw while getting lunch. hao’s biggest hypeman when he drops a nice scenic shot or a new art piece.
soonyoung: too many emojis, his most used are 💯 and 🐯. types like a former high school popular girl who got caught in an mlm. viciously abusing katalk stickers. spelling isn’t too bad but he never uses punctuation (when he does it’s !!!!!). occasionally spams the chat with 20 tiger pictures in a row
jihoon: lurker. always online but never says anything. will leave you on read. once in a blue moon he will actually send a text that is the most scathing, dressing-down, earth-scorching insult you have ever seen and it’s five words long
mingyu: seungcheol-in-training (gym bro, not wrangling). very forgetful, misses important memos. always getting picked on, but he makes it so easy. misspelled a word in 2019 and they’ve never let him hear the end of it. sends gym selfies even though they’re mocked relentlessly. once dropped a cringe selca and to this day it’s used as a reaction pic
seungkwan: his spelling grammar and punctuation are perfect. has beef with everyone. along with seungcheol he’s always tying to wrangle the chat into some sense of order but is Not the guy for the job because he has a very short fuse. he’s like a customer service worker bc he’s always communicating in very polite and positive ways but you get the sense he is barely restraining himself from killing you underneath it
chan: texts normally unless he wants something from his hyungs, in which case he’ll use cutesy emoticons and stickers, lots of ~~~. second most picked on after mingyu, but gives as good as he gets, an absolute savage when he’s had enough. def this one bitch in my gc who sends a voice memo of him farting or burping once a week

Interview: Mike Faist Isn’t Sure About This Whole Acting Thing
“I can’t tell if I hate acting or if I love it too much,” he said ahead of the debut of the Amazon series “Panic.” Coming soon, a major role in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.” For now, he’s going to Ohio.
By Elisabeth Vincentelli Published May 27, 2021
Tall and lanky, looking as if he were born wearing Wranglers, Mike Faist cuts quite a striking figure in the Amazon Prime series “Panic”: His character, Dodge Mason, is a Stetson-wearing rodeo dude who breaks untamed horses, then soulfully gazes into their eyes.
That, however, is not at all how the character was written in the Lauren Oliver young adult novel that inspired the show, debuting Friday, in which Dodge and a dozen other small-town teenagers face off in a series of life-threatening challenges — think a naturalistic “Hunger Games” with more class war.
After shooting a pilot in 2018 in upstate New York (where the book is set), the production completely rebooted in Austin, Tex., a year later, and Dodge’s back story was changed to better fit the new locale. Suddenly, the school wimp who was interested in cards and magic had been turned into a Western archetype: the strong, do-right loner who doesn’t say much. Faist went with the flow.
“Ciphers can be really boring,” said Oliver, who also wrote the screenplay, “but he manages to capture the power inherent in a certain level of invisibility.”
Dodge is quite a departure for Faist, who is best known for his Tony-nominated performance as the tormented, cynical Connor Murphy in the Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen.” Blessed with a rangy charisma and a bone structure that appears to have been carved with a scythe, the actor, now 29, could have easily coasted in “Panic.” But his sensibility is closer to that of such atypical leading men as Adam Driver, and he modernizes a potentially boilerplate part.
“Mike really didn’t want to be a caricature, but I don’t think he ever could be,” said Jessica Sula, who plays Natalie, Dodge’s love interest in “Panic.” She recalled that when shooting resumed in Texas after a Covid-19-imposed pause, Faist chose to live in a trailer on a plot of land with his rescue dog, Austin.
“He’s just so fabulously ridiculous and wonderful,” she said of Faist, laughing fondly.
Faist’s own course has been ascendant since he dropped out of acting school at 18, and his plum role in Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated “West Side Story” as Riff, the leader of the Jets, should put him on Hollywood’s speed dial when it debuts in December. (Shooting wrapped in September 2019.)
And yet the actor spent much of a recent conversation candidly admitting to ambivalence and incertitude. He spent some of the past year driving around the country with Austin and writing a screenplay. He has been turning down offers and is now selling his Brooklyn apartment and heading back to Ohio.
Faist was warm and laid back on a recent sunny morning in Park Slope, and he laughed a lot in what seemed to be protective self-deprecation as he pondered his future, professional and otherwise. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.
How did they spring the new Dodge on you?
It was still the same elements in terms of, “Oh, here’s the new guy,” but instead of, like, a weird magician, he’s now a … cowboy? I was like, “What do you mean, I’m now a cowboy?” They were like: “Yeah, yeah, you’ll be fine. Maybe try an accent.”
You do look pretty comfortable playing a horse whisperer.
I’d never worked with a horse in a production before. There were two of them: a very calm, gentle horse and a skittish one. We just ended up working with this skittish horse because it was actually doing stuff. The scene where the horse moves toward me was not planned or choreographed at all. They are, you know, unpredictable.
It might have been less intimidating than a sex scene. Is the one with Jessica Sula your first as an actor?
Maybe. I don’t know.
Wouldn’t you remember?
You’d think! I did do a romantic scene [onstage] in “A Month in the Country” with Taylor Schilling. I remember getting a pretty [expletive] review. [Laughs.]
Since the fall of 2018, you’ve gone back and forth between “Panic” and “West Side Story.” How did you handle these very physical projects?
For “West Side,” I found these Bruce Davidson photos of Brooklyn gangs from the late ’50s. If you look at their photos, these guys are emaciated, they have tattoos, and they look wired. Any money they had, they would pool and buy cheap wine and maybe they would have French fries or something. Then they were doing drugs. So I was like, “I need to lose some weight.” But my body was totally breaking down. Then I tried to bulk up as much as possible for “Panic” — just eating potatoes.
Did you do any kind of special training?
I started going to the Mendez boxing gym in Manhattan for “West Side.” I was working with John Rosado, who was raised in New York, Puerto Rican, badass. He was like, “I can’t believe I’m training a Jet!”
Your first big job was in the Broadway musical “Newsies,” which is quite dance heavy. Still, was it daunting to audition for “West Side Story”?
I put together a tape, and then they said, “We want you to come back in and dance.” I was like, “Is there any way you could not have me dance?” They were like: “What are you talking about? This is ‘West Side Story’!” The only saving grace is that Justin Peck [the choreographer] and I have similar body types: tall, nothing but arms and legs. They had their work cut out for them in order to get me up to snuff.
Why aren’t you in the upcoming “Dear Evan Hansen” movie alongside your former co-star Ben Platt?
I feel like I couldn’t do it. I started that when I was, like, 21, and was with it for five or six years. When you’re doing eight shows a week, it very much turns into relying on your technique and the job of it. And the show was such a zeitgeisty thing. It really took a lot out of me, and I didn’t really have it in me anymore.
With “Panic” and “West Side Story” behind you, what are you lining up?
Maybe this is so pretentious, but “West Side” was everything I had ever hoped to accomplish as an actor. It’s really crazy, but it was transcendental: either I didn’t feel like I was myself, or I was the most authentic version of myself. I can’t really tell which one. Having gone from having no money, wanting to just be a working actor — I don’t want to just be a working actor anymore. I had that experience. It [expletive] me up.
What did?
“West Side,” in the best of ways. I can’t unsee what I’ve seen. The pandemic nearly killed us and — what, I just want to be an actor? That’s ridiculous. [Laughs.] I don’t care enough. It’s a weird thing: I can’t tell if I hate acting or if I love it too much. It’s not like I don’t plan on doing it. I just don’t want to follow the trajectory of what the industry wants me to do.
Which is what?
Put on a cape and wear a mask. I need to take more agency because no one’s going to do it for me. It’s tricky, but it’s interesting and pretty exciting. I’m going to hang out with my family in Ohio and then start to figure out where I’m going to go. I would like to ultimately be of service and of use; that’s when I feel at my best.

Compiling more of the street racing AU vehicles.
Pictured: Soap drives a teal 1994 Mazda RX-7. Ghost drives a black 1970 Plymouth Barracuda. Gaz has a white 2010 BMW 5 Series Sport edition as a daily, and a red Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP for fun. Rudy drives a silver and black 1971 Challenger SRT Hellcat. Farah’s daily is a dark green 2004 Jeep Wrangler soft top, her bike is a black and tan 1977 Kawasaki Kz650 Cafe Racer. Alex switches between a dark maroon 2017 Indian Scout Bobber and a yellow 2016 Harley-Davidson XG750R
Not pictured because they’re less likely to end up in the illustrated panels: Price’s main vehicle is a beat up, modded to hell military surplus Dodge M880. Alejandro is Rudy’s passenger princess (fight me) but owns a black 1995 Land Rover Defender 90. Laswell has a very sensible beige mid-2010s Subaru Forester. Graves has a cherry red 2019 Camaro ZL1from the impound lot that he genuinely does not know how to handle. Valeria has several cars, but is typically seen in a matte vinyl wrapped 2020 Escalade or a 2019 Corvette Stingray. And Shepard drives a Kia Soul with a fucked up bumper, because its funny for me to imagine.

"The story of me being a stupid drover and the punishment what followed" gets my vote
Congratulations, you've chosen the [CORPORAL PUNISHMENT] route!
A TALE OF STOCKWHIPS
Warnings for: corporal punishment, flogging, being restrained, and feelings of helplessness. READ YOUR OWN DISCRETION.
So from 2019 to 2020 (keep in mind I was eighteen in 2019) I worked as a stockman. And I'm a bleeding heart--I don't like hurting animals. I avoid it when possible and especially back then.
This was the first mob I was with. It was May of 2019, I'd only been back in Australia for a month and I was just recently promoted to wrangler at this point, so I was still learning the ropes of working with a team. I'd worked on stations as a lad and teen helping to drive cattle, but I'd never been a wrangler outside of steer and calf work. And working calves what weigh 100kg as a 5-foot 14-year-old weighing 50kg isn't that difficult. It's a lot different when you're a 5'2" just-become-a-man scrawny bloke weighing 70kg wet and you're trying to wrangle an animal what weighs 650kg.
Less rope, less brawn, and a lot more brains. Brains which I had not yet acquired!
A bull broke away from the mob. Big bloke, maybe 800kg, and I had to run him down cuz that's my job now. I break away from the mob, and Wiluna and I start a pursuit. She loved it. She lived for that shit. Me too.
Up until this point, all the cattle I'd run had banked back to the mob on their own. I crack my stockwhip a long distance behind them and it's no worries, they'll run up alongside the mob and eventually merge in.
This one didn't do that.
He goes left and I pursue him. I keep on his tail and Wiluna overtakes him on the left. We push him right, back toward the mob. But this cunt had a couple roos loose in his paddock--he doesn't run alongside the mob but instead he just charges it broadside. He's rushing toward the mob from the side and I hesitate.
I'd never whipped the hide of cattle. When I crack my whip I'm a good distance behind them. I'd never had to touch their hide with the whip, aside from a tap of the stock, because they self-correct at the mere sound of the whip on whichever side is opposite of where I want them to go. A crack left drives them right, a crack right drives them left, etc.
But he's banking right toward the mob. I crack the whip on his right side. It doesn't touch him. Go left and merge! He's not moving. I crack it again. Merge, damn you. He's not moving. He's still heading flat chat for the mob.
There was about a five-second where I could've cracked him directly on his hide and he probably would've flinches and either stopped entirely, or gone left to run alongside the mob and merge in. But I'm a bleeding heart and don't want to hurt him, so I don't take the opportunity.
He crashed into the mob. One of the stockmen in the middle of the mob is caught in the row. His horse is sent to the ground with him still on her, and then the mob rushes. I see him go down and disappear into the sea of cattle, my heart sinks into my balls, but I have to leave him behind to help my other stockmen stop the rush.
Maybe fifteen minutes later I'm circling the mob of about six-hundred head with my other stockmen. In the whirlpool of cattle I see a horse's head pop up. A few seconds later I see my stockman's head as he's climbing back into the saddle. Immediate sigh of relief. (He'd told us later that his mare had stood over him like he was a foal to protect him from the cattle until the rush cleared. She's a good horse.)
Now, rushes usually happen at night. Countless stockmen have been killed by them. Often they're trampled while still in their swags. It's a horrible death. If a rush happens and comes toward your camp, your best bet is to drop everything and climb a tree. Wiluna was a great night horse because of her ability to see in the ark and wheel the cattle into a calm.
Why do I mention this?
Well, cattle rarely rush during the day, and when they do it's usually the result of stockmen error. Like mine.
We check to make sure everyone's alright, and it seems so. My stockman's mare is a mite unsteady, but she's also breathing real hard, so we figure she's just exhausted. We give her time and she settles and recovers within the hour. We get moving again once she's been watered and checked out by our oldest equestrian.
The rest of the day is uneventful, but I keep my head down and stay at the back of the mob cuz I feel terrible. Outside of the day I lost Wiluna, this event was my greatest failure as a stockman, and I couldn't look any of my muster mates in the face out of shame cuz I'm the bloke what almost got Dale killed.
As always, that night I hobble Wiluna a couple hundred metres from the mob. Wiluna was very feisty mare and would bite horses and raise hell all night if hobbled with them, so she'd stay with me. And I can't sleep around people, so it's just be me and her away from the mob and the rest of the stockmen. I was a heavier sleeper then, and I slept on my side. Neither of these are true now.
By the time I hear the voices clear enough to wake up, two of my muster mates jump me. And I've got a history with this shit, so it's an immediate panic. My right arm's pinned under my own weight where one of them is kneeling on my ribs, the other bloke bloke has my left arm, and I'm kicking my legs in the dirt but not getting anywhere.
They rolls me onto my stomach and stretch my arms out and kneel on them. And I'm still trying to get up, but it's not exactly possible with the positioning. The bloke on my left reaches down my left side and grabs my stockwhip from where it's hooked in my belt, and he passes it to someone behind me. I can't see who it is.
All the while, off to my right, I can hear Wiluna somewhere off to my right, snorting and roaring. This only panics me further, cuz horses have a Certain Intuition and they bond with their stockman, they protect their stockman from cattle and other such threats, and the way she's roaring is telling me that she thinks I'm in danger. And I might've only just known this horse for the past few weeks, but when we crossed Warburton Creek and lost three heads she wouldn't cross cuz she knew the current was too strong. Through the sandstorm the previous week, through leading us to a watering hole during the autumn drought--Wiluna was the one what kept realising we were up Shit Creek and she was consistently the one getting us out. Wiluna wasn't an Australian stockhorse--she was a brumby, and her ancestors survived the harsh country through their intuition and instinct.
And that instinct was currently telling her that I was in danger.
I hear footsteps and the stockman what was knocked down earlier, Dale, he comes over to me and kneels down in front of me. He reaches over and grabs a fistful of my shirt at the waist and pulls it free of my daks, and he tugs it up until my whole back's exposed. And I'm huffing and swearing and hissing threats through the dirt in my teeth, but he stops there. Just holds my shirt where it is.
I hear some chatter behind me, and I recognise the voice of our muster master, the boss drover. And at first I think he's gonna interrupt whatever hazing bullshit is happening her, cuz he was always friendly with me and patient good for a talk. Nobody else on our team ever really cared for me much, but my muster master was kind. Or at least I thought he was.
I hear the wssh of leather. I know that sound. Know it intimately. It's the sound of a whip's fall coming loose.
I flinch when it touches my shoulder. Just falls across it to touch the dirt in front of me. I turn my head to look at it. I see the red leather of the fall, and then I see the grey hairs of the cracker, and that's Wiluna's hair, and that's my whip, and I am in danger and very fucking scared.
The whip pulls back. From my trap and down my shoulder blades and spine to my lumbar and the back of my daks and thighs until I can't feel it anymore. I hear it crack somewhere far above my head. Sharp as it cuts the air. I hear Wiluna snort at the sound. And I get real fucking tense. Dale sounds sympathetic when he tells me not to do that cuz it's just gonna hurt more if I do. But I stay tense, cuz "just relax" is easier said than done when you've got a bare back and can hear a whip crack.
The first lash felt like being cut. The cracker didn't hit me, cuz I reckon it woulda broke skin if it had, but I was lashed with the thong, that thick leather that tapers out which the fall is tied onto. It met my right shoulder just above the blade and ripped diagonally down my back to the waistband of my daks, almost reaching my left side. The noise I made was somewhere between a scream and a yelp. Real short, and left me gasping.
Boss raises his voice and asks how many lashes the bull would've needed for a redirection. Someone says five, someone says six, but Boss is waiting on Dale, cuz Dale was the wrangler before I came along, and he's the one what almost got killed. I realised Dale is holding my suffering in his hands. Terrifying. He doesn't owe me any kindnesses or mercy.
But Dale says three.
The word barely escaped his mouth when I got the second lash.
I'm hissing and groaning and they give me a few seconds to stop sucking wind so hard, and then I got my third. That one was the worst. Stockmen--especially senior stockmen like the Boss--have incredible aim with our whips, so each lash was laid neatly over the first. And even with my sobbing and writhing, it was perfect placement.
And then everyone got up and let me lie there and catch my breath. My stockwhip, rolled up now, lands in the dirt in front of me. I can see the group walking away, and Boss yells back that if I give a bullock has as hard as what I just got, I'll be just fine. Then everyone disappeared back for the main camp, and I was left alone to languish for the night. I went to Wiluna first to calm her down.
I wore that welt for almost two weeks.

Rip Torn (1931–2019)
Physique: Husky Build Height: 5'10" (1.78 m)
Elmore Rual "Rip" Torn Jr. was an American actor, voice artist, and comedian. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing Marsh Turner in Cross Creek. Torn's portrayal of Artie the producer on The Larry Sanders Show received six Emmy Award nominations, winning in 1996. He also won an American Comedy Award for Funniest Supporting Male in a Series, and two CableACE Awards for his work on the show, and for his roles as Zed in the Men in Black franchise and Patches O'Houlihan in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Torn died on July 9, 2019, at the age of 88.
The barrel-chested, slab-faced, and thunder-happy American thespian may qualify as a 'bear' in the broadest sense of the term. With his black cowboy boots, black Wrangler work pants held up by suspenders, a blue striped shirt, sherbet orange vest and a dusty black fedora, Torn is typecast as genially earthy, volatile, and loudmouthed good old boys. He first caught my attention as Artie on The Larry Sanders Show, but it was his scene in the god awful Freddy got Fingered where he’s shaking his ass and saying ‘fuck your daddy fuck your daddy’ that I remember him the most. He's probably remembered for his numerous DUI charges and breaking into a bank. Sure, the drunken, violent old man look could be a turn off, but if you could bottle that up. It could be damn hot.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Happy Tears (2009) - Shirtless, Rear Nudity Freddy got Fingered (2001) - Rear Nudity Jinxed! (1982) - Shirtless, Rear Nudity The Man Who Fell To Earth (1976) - Shirtless, Full Frontal, Payday (1973) - Shirtless
