Bollinger’s badass EV utility trucks arrive in 2021 The age of automotive electrification is once again upon us. Startups like Rivian and Lordstown joining industry stalwarts like Ford and Hummer in developing the next generation of EV SUVs and pickups. But none of them can compare to the sheer power and utility of the Bollinger B1 and B2, which the company showed off this week at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. You might remember Bollinger from the 2017 LAAS when the company debuted its initial 2-door EV truck concept. Well, two years later Bollinger is back with two new models each with 2 additional doors. There's the B1, a 4-seat sport utility truck with an enclosed rear end, and its sister, the B2, a sport utility pickup. From the quarter panels forward, the vehicles are identical. Both are equipped with a pair of electric motors producing a total 614 horsepower and 668 ft-lb of torque. That gives it a 0-60 in 4.5 seconds with a 100 MPH top speed -- not quite as quick as the Rivian R1T's 3 second score but still faster than virtually any gas-powered truck currently on the market. The B's are just as capable off-road as they are on. Each offers 15-inches of ground clearance which can be raised or lowered an additional 5 inches. Their hydropneumatic suspensions self-level when hauling heavy loads (they're rated up to 5,000 lbs of cargo and 7,500 lbs towing capacity) and both offer AWD. "The way the suspension is done, it'll feel the same way driving it whether you're carrying 5,000 pounds [of cargo] or not," Robert Bollinger, the company's founder, told Engadget. The Bollingers get all that power from a massive 120 kWh battery pack set under the vehicle's floor using the same basic "skateboard" design as the Rivian. 120 kWh is simply massive. It's 20 percent larger than the biggest battery pack Tesla sells. That translates into an estimated range of 200 miles or around 10 hours of off-roading. What's more, each comes equipped with a 15 kW inverter, allowing you to run anything from phone chargers to power tools through the vehicles' nearly dozen 110V outlets. Unfortunately, that huge battery pack also translates into exceedingly long charging times. Even with a Level 2 (240V) charger, you're looking at a good 8 - 10 hours to fully replenish the system. However if you can get access to a Level 3 commercial charger, you can completely refill the Bollinger's batteries in just 75 minutes. The B's are not available as kits, Bollinger will only be selling them as finished vehicles, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to customize it to your heart's desire. Pretty much everything on the B's is removable. That includes the windows, the doors, the roof panels, the bumpers and the rear seats -- even the windshield if you're so inclined. You can practically strip these trucks to the frame and they'll still function. Most of the body is made from aluminum to keep the weight down, though the company is looking into offering carbon fiber components in the future, as well as potentially a cab-on-chassis design where customers can customize their vehicle from the ground up. If you do take out the rear seats, the B1 and B2 offer a total of 113 cubic feet of cargo space. And if you need to haul extremely long items, say 12-foot lengths of 2x4s, the Bollingers offer a clever passthrough system running the length of the vehicle. Since there's no internal combustion engine in the way, you can flip down both the rear and the front tailgates to accommodate the long load. The Bollingers are massive vehicles. They're rated as Class 3 trucks, putting them on par with the likes of the Chevy Silverado 3500 or Dodge Ram 3500 (minus the dually). As such, the Bollingers do not come with airbags. "We simulate side pole impacts for both passengers and batteries," Bollinger said. "Rollover is a big one [on account of the off-roading capabilities], and we also have to crash test for a number of things. We're going to do a lot of due diligence safety work on top of what [the NHTSA] requires." The company is currently ramping up production on the B's and hopes to have that completed by the end of next year with the first batch of deliveries made to pre-order customers by early 2021. Sometimes it seems like everyone is driving a pickup truck no wonder trucks are the family car of choice for increasing numbers of households. In the world of pickup trucks, particularly the Heavy Duty realm where this 2019 Ram 2500 dwells, it’s all about the numbers.

It’s hard to make direct comparisons, with so many different configurations when it comes to Heavy Duty pickups; but both numbers are ½ a second quicker than we’ve ever gotten with a Chevy Duramax or Ford Powerstroke.

You certainly won’t be whipping in and out of cones through a slalom course at the job site; but doing so here, enabled us to get a feel for how the Ram would behave should perform in emergency maneuvers, or when pulling a big load up a curvy mountain road.

Turn-ins are slow, and the tires feel like they want to roll over, but the Ram remains very stable, with seemingly zero body roll. Steering is light, and at times you feel like a seafaring Captain battling a storm with how much input it takes; but ultimately it gets the job done.

You certainly ride high, and the pavement appears a long way down. Think taxing a 747.

Now, this new Ram 2500 is about more than just big numbers from a diesel engine. The interior has been completely redesigned. And much like the Ram 1500 that inspired it, which is the greatest interior in all of truckdom; it takes interior comfort, technology, and flexibility to new levels for the HD ranks.

But, not everyone needs a tank-towing diesel, so we also spent some time in a base Tradesman 2500 with the standard 410-horsepower 6.4-liter HEMI V8 with 429 lb-ft. of torque.

The 1,000-Pound Ambition That Became a Real Torque Number For The Ram 3500

The Ram 3500 with the 6.7-liter turbodiesel I-6 is now on sale. We’ve driven and tested it and had time to process the numbers, but quite frankly we are still gobsmacked by that one insane four-digit number.

The Cummins diesel generates a mind-blowing 1,000 lb-ft of torque as well as 400 horsepower, allowing it to tow 35,100 pounds. (Chevy has since topped that with a Silverado HD that can tow 35,500 pounds.) So when we caught up with Jim Morrison, head of the Ram Brand in North America, we had to know the story behind hitting the big 1,000.

Did it start as a joke? A stretch goal to make engineers laugh and cry at the same time?

The story behind the story is marching orders to engineer the new heavy-duty to be the most capable in the marketplace in terms of payload, power, and torque, Morrison tells us. Torque was the biggie since it also affected payload.

Then something mathematical happened. “To drive the 35,100 pounds of trailer tow,” Morrison says, “when the guys did all the math, they came up with something in the high 900s. It was something like 980 or 985 or something like that. And then we were, ‘OK, we’re that close. We gotta be the first truck to get to 1,000.’”

Initially they thought it was a stretch target, but the team kept working. ‘That’s kind of our approach to life at Ram, just keep working until you get there,” Morrison says.

“It was a little bit of a ‘we made it’ moment when he heard back from the Cummins folks that they had dynoed the first one and we had got that,” Morrison says of the first 1,000 reading. “It was a heroic moment for the truck engineers,” and the proof was on a lot of peoples’ phones in Auburn Hills.

Morrison was as gobsmacked as anyone. “I remember these trucks in the ’80s having 400 lb-ft of torque with the first Cummins engines,” he says. “That was groundbreaking then. We’ve exponentially grown beyond that. We thought having one more digit on our torque was a good way to really emphasize the Cummins power. It was kind of fun to go all the way to 1,000.”

There are no plans to stop selling the previous-gen Classic yet, and Ram still has a few tricks up its sleeve, like the addition of a $37,040 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Warlock, a limited edition throwback that pays homage to the Dodge Warlock pickup of the late ’70s. The new Warlock sells at a popular price point, about $6,000 less than a new Ram, and has become important for government and fleet sales.

Is Ram working on an electric pickup?

Ram 1500 has standard eTorque on V-6s, and the mild hybrid tech is offered on one of the variants of the Hemi V-8, improving torque, increasing fuel efficiency by 2 mpg, and giving the truck 12,000 pounds of towing capability. As for a pure electric pickup? “I can’t talk about the future,” Morrison says.

How is development coming on a compact or midsize pickup?

A smaller pickup is in FCA’s five-year plan, but Morrison won’t spill any details. On the recent first-quarter earnings call, however, CEO Mike Manley stressed the importance of getting a midsize truck for the Ram brand. But as has been the refrain for the many years that FCA has tried to get a smaller truck on the market, the automaker is struggling with what platform to put it on. Although sharing with the Jeep Gladiator would seem logical, that is not necessarily the route Ram will take. “Being able to find a cost-effective platform in a region where we can build it with low cost and it still being applicable in the market is what they’re struggling with at the moment,” Manley told analysts and media on the call.
