Whether you opt for the 6.4-liter gas V-8 or the famed 6.7-liter Cummins diesel, the truck is surprisingly quiet, something Ram went to great lengths to achieve with improved sound deadening, an acoustic windshield, and an active noise-cancellation system for top-of-the-line models.

The frame and axles have been strengthened, and the suspension geometry revised to improve ride and handling. The 2500 models feel as steady as the half-ton trucks of not-too-long-ago, and while the 3500s get leaf springs in the rear and are noticeably harsher, they’re still surprisingly comfortable given their ability to haul up to 7,680 pounds in the bed.
Last year’s 5.7-liter gasoline V-8 has been dropped; the base engine is now the 6.4-liter gas V-8, which returns with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque and a new eight-speed automatic. But it was the Cummins turbo-diesel that put Ram HDs on the map, and it’s been extensively updated. The 6.7-liter straight-six now makes 370 horses and 850 lb-ft in standard trim, and—warning, headline material ahead—400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque in high-output form. Currently, the Chevy tops out at 910 lb-ft and the Ford at 935. For perspective, the base engine in a new Peterbilt 579 semi makes 1,150 lb-ft. Both versions of the diesel get six-speed automatics, but while the standard-output engine gets a beefed-up Chrysler transmission, the high-output version gets an Aisin unit.
Cummins did a lot of work on the engine to facilitate the upgrades, including a new compacted graphite iron (CGI) block, a redesigned cylinder head, a new turbocharger, and a 2,900-psi fuel system. The strength of the CGI block allowed many of the nonstructural components to be switched from iron to aluminum, and as a result the new engine is 60 pounds lighter. FCA engineers had to increase the size of the cooling system, and were rather pleased that they were able to do it without altering the Ram’s signature styling.
The Part Where We Drive
We started our drive in a 3500 regular-cab Big Horn, one step up from the entry-level Tradesman, with a V-8 engine up front and a 1,500-ish-pound load in the bed. With an interior done up in black plastic, the truck was all about function over form, but we were impressed by the simplicity of the layout and the quality of even those basic materials, which is more than we can say for Ram trucks of just a few years back. Big mirrors and a commendable lack of bulges on the hood make the big Ram as easy to drive as a half-ton.
Our second truck, a 2500 Limited crew-cab with the stoutest diesel, was a real cowboy Cadillac, awash in leather and wood and featuring the massive 12.0-inch vertical infotainment screen. We’re not totally convinced about the latter—we prefer real buttons for the climate controls versus a touch-screen, though perhaps owners will grow familiar and won’t mind. Only the column shifter, an unbending affair that looks as if it were made from a piece of bar-stock steel, stood out as slightly awkward. But the overwhelming impression was that it’s a lovely truck to drive, with a comfortable ride, a dearth of engine and road noise, and power, power, power.
Naturally, we towed a trailer—a 30-something-foot fifth-wheel palace for horses and people. In terms of towing and hauling technology, Ram offers a comprehensive camera package, including a wiring harness for a remote camera that can be mounted on the back of (or inside) your trailer. The trucks also have an automatic emergency braking system which can trigger the trailer brakes or be disabled if you’re towing horses. We were more impressed by Smart Brake, a feature that’s been on Ram HDs for some time. Put the exhaust brake in Smart mode, take your foot off the accelerator, and it will use the transmission and exhaust brake to maintain the same speed as you cruise downhill. Very cool—and very safe.
We also did some off-roading in the new Power Wagon, the 2500-based macho version of the Ram HD, which benefits from the new eight-speed automatic that gives it a 50:1 crawl ratio. The built-in winch (which precludes the Wagon from getting the diesel engine) now uses a synthetic cable in place of steel, saving 28 pounds. We hit some pretty intense trails in Hungry Valley, one of which required some help from the winch (with another Power Wagon as the anchor point). Suffice it to say that it’s a great off-roader on trails big enough to accommodate a truck its size—and anything the Power Wagon can’t fit through, it can probably knock over.
As for pricing, the cheapest HD, a 2500 4×2 regular-cab Tradesman, starts at $35,090, including the $1,695 destination fee. 3500s start at $36,540. Power Wagons begin at $54,595 and Mega Cabs at $48,195. The most expensive model, a 3500 4×4 Limited with the Mega Cab, starts at $68,745. Want a diesel? 2019 Ram HD First Test: How 1,000 LB-FT Performs at the Track

I made the sacrifice to stay in a five-star hotel away from my sleep-averse toddler only to play with the big dog, to experience the main event, to drive the Ram with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline-six with—are we all sitting down—1,000 lb-ft of torque! Tradesman had 2,500 pounds of lumber in the bed, the thing still felt fleet and darty. Sure, any truck is going to ride better with weight in the bed, so yes, Ram PR totally tricked me.
However, if you actually use your truck to move stuff around, the 2500 Tradesman is a great, low-dollar, high-capability alternative to a half-tonner. Ram hasn’t announced pricing yet, but I’d guess you’ll be able to slide into the Tradesman’s vinyl-skinned interior for about $35,000 with no options whatsoever, just like the example I drove.
On the other end of the pricing spectrum sits the full-fat, 3500 Mega Cab dually with the aforementioned optional 1,000-lb-ft engine, in either Laramie Longhorn or Limited trim with the Max Tow package—which can set you back over $90,000.
What if you want the capability of a big, strong diesel powerplant, but the notion of a near-six-figure truck leaves you cold? Don’t worry. For $9,100 over the base gas engine, you can opt for a 370-horsepower, 850-lb-ft version of the Cummins. Jumping from 850 to 1,000 lb-ft—which requires a different transmission and transfer case—costs another $2,695. Still, you can buy a very capable Ram heavy-duty hauler for well under 50 large. How capable?
I got behind the wheel of a 3500 Limited dually with its 850 lb-ft of torque and a large, enclosed box trailer hanging off the gooseneck. All the trucks present had little white placards inside announcing both the trailer weight and the weight of what was on/in said trailer. All the trucks save for the Delmonico Red bruiser I was sitting in. Some other journo swiped it. I’ll ask the PR guy later, I told myself.
Even though 850 lb-ft of twist is weirdly a “normal” amount of torque these days, the trailer felt very light. “Maybe it’s empty?” my passenger mused. Yeah, maybe. The two of us guessed that the unladen trailer weighed 2, maybe 3 tons, max. We made this assumption because the ride quality wasn’t all that great. As stated earlier, heavy-duty trucks tend to ride much better when under a heavy load. Imagine our stunned shock to discover the trailer was full of bags of rocks; thus we’d been hauling 16,580 pounds. As for the ride quality, I’m thinking the Max Tow package solves that problem. Why am I thinking that?
Finally it was time to climb into the truck I’d come to drive, a 3500 Limited dually with the Max Tow package plus the 400-hp, 1,000-lb-ft king Cummins. As it happened, this particular truck was hooked up to an 8,440-pound trailer with a 9,100-pound skid-steer strapped to it (total: 17,540 pounds). Heavy, yes, but the crazy part is that 17,540 pounds is less than half of the truck’s capability. That’s right, this rig is capable of hauling 35,100 pounds.
(An aside: Sadly for Ram, Chevy just announced that its heavy hauler can handle 35,500 pounds. Meanwhile, Ford’s new thing is to announce numbers without actually revealing the numbers—such as saying the GT500 will be 700-plus horsepower. So, Ford’s 7.3-liter V-8 will have some sort of output—but you can rest assured that the 2020 Super Duty’s max tow rating will be at least 35,501 pounds.)
Up the Grapevine we went. Although it’s not quite the legendary Davis Dam towing test we employ as part of our Truck of the Year festivities, the California Grapevine up through and past Gorman is quite mountainous. The big Ram got itself up to 50 mph on a flat section of freeway, no problem whatsoever. I waited for the uphill and then punched it. As it turns out, knowing you have four-digit torque at your disposal and experiencing said tidal wave of force are two radically different things. I knew this truck wouldn’t sweat the load, but I wasn’t prepared for how effortless it would feel. To my astonishment, I watched as the 3500 HD accelerated up to 65 mph as easily as an unladen passenger car would perform the same act.
Going downhill was as easy. Ram includes an automatic exhaust brake that acts as a sort of smart descent control. After double-tapping the exhaust brake switch twice, all you do is ever so lightly drag the brake pedal to hold your current speed. Touch the throttle to override it. Simple. Also worth noting, with the Max Tow package, the rear brake rotors are larger (14.4 inches) than the fronts (14.2 inches). Why? The rear brakes of the truck act as the front brakes of the trailer. Think about it. Clever, no?
After turning around to head back to base camp, I found myself stuck behind a motorhome struggling to go 25 mph up the hill. During Truck of the Year, testing director Kim Reynolds calls this the Frustration Test, and it has become a staple of our Truck of the Year testing (though we test accelerating from 35 to 55 mph). I pulled out to the left and floored it as we passed Tejon Ranch on the way up to Frazier Park.
I checked my rearview display, and, yup, cars were bearing down on me and the giant Ram. I didn’t know it at the time, but the 3500 Limited I was driving weighs 9,060 pounds empty. Counting the trailer and at least 800 pounds of passengers (including Ram HD chief engineer Rod Romain, who has a 1,000-lb-ft handshake), we’re talking more than 27,000 pounds that needed to get from 25 to 65 mph uphill in a big hurry. Moment of truth, as they say.
In our standard testing, this big Ram hits 60 mph in 8.4 seconds and runs the quarter mile in 16.4 seconds at 84.9 mph. On paper, these numbers sound like nothing. Back to knowing versus experiencing, this big ol’ hoss feels much quicker than our instrumented numbers say.
There’s this Bentleyness (for lack of a better word) to this sensation—that the tsunami of torque you’re surfing will never crest, will never cease, will never relent. The times on paper aren’t quick by modern standards, but by the seat of your pants, this engine in the Ram feels invincible. Also, this 4.5-ton monster truck rides remarkably well completely empty. As for the Frustration Test, I ask, “What frustration?” We passed that slow-moving motorhome without breaking a sweat.

Torque, Thrust: 2019 Ram 2500 / 3500 HD First Drive
To an outsider, the launch of Ram’s new heavy-duty pickups might seem like a symphony of chest thumping. After all, Fiat-Chrysler’s engineers trumpeted the new Ram’s best-in-class 1,000 lb-ft of torque and 35,100-lb towing capacity when it debuted.
But a week or so later—and three weeks before we were allowed to tell you how the new Ram trucks drive—Chevrolet announced a 35,500-pound towing capacity for the Silverado 3500. Meanwhile, Ford also showed off its revised F-series Super Duty, with a promise of increased but as-yet unspecified towing numbers. It wouldn’t surprise us if Ram finds a way to up its own specs (“You can tow more if you remove the window glass!”), because the HD-truck arms race will continue unabated until the sun swells up and swallows the earth.
Thing is, though, the new HD Ram doesn’t need to brag on its numbers. That’s because it follows in the tread marks of its redone-for-’19 half-ton sibling, the Ram 1500, which is the nicest and best truck on the market. And if sales of the light-duty 1500 are any indication, the public is figuring that out.
Rugged Luxury
It’s no secret that pickups have been getting posher over the years, but Ram has taken things to a new level. It proudly boasts that its top-of-the-line HD models have more leather and wood than any other pickup, and we’re content to take the company’s word for it. The Limited model has leather on the seats, leather on the console, leather on the dash, leather on the door panels, and leather on the gear selector. And where there isn’t leather, there’s open-pore wood trim that looks freshly hewn. If cowboys designed Bentleys, this is what they’d look like.
Among the impressive elements about the new truck are the lengths Ram went to in order to differentiate the trim levels. Every model has its own personality, reflected in its interior accents, fabric choices, grillework, and even the fonts used on the instruments. Sit in a low-level Tradesman or Big Horn, then check out a top-of-the-line Longhorn or Limited, and they feel almost like completely different trucks. It’s a real contrast to GMC’s latest Sierra, in which there’s little differentiation between the top-line Denali and lower trims.
In-vehicle technology shares the spotlight. Ram offers three sizes of touchscreens, the largest of which is a 12.0-inch, vertically oriented monster that allows two standard-size views (for example, the climate-control display and the audio system) to be displayed at one time. It can also show a giant map in full-screen mode, very handy when one is hauling a heavy trailer and needs to preview the road ahead with a critical eye.
But even the bottom-of-the-line Tradesman, outfitted with commercial-grade vinyl seats, a plastic dash, and the smallest available display, shows an attribute we’re not used to seeing in heavy-duty trucks: refinement. Whether you opt for the 6.4-liter gas V-8 or the famed 6.7-liter Cummins diesel, the truck is surprisingly quiet, something Ram went to great lengths to achieve with improved sound deadening, an acoustic windshield, and an active noise-cancellation system for top-of-the-line models.
The Dirty Bits
Naturally, there has been much beefing up of the mechanicals. We’ll leave the technical deep dive to our colleagues at Truck Trend, and instead hit the highlights. The frame and axles have been strengthened, and the suspension geometry revised to improve ride and handling. The shocks are valved to provide variable response to softer or harsher inputs, and optional rear air-spring leveling is offered on both the 2500 and 3500 that not only self-levels the truck, but also gives it the ability to squat down under a trailer hitch and then raise itself to hook up.
2500 models have a five-link rear suspension, which does wonders for the ride. It doesn’t seem that long ago that heavy-duty trucks rode like, well, heavy-duty trucks. The 2500 models feel as steady as the half-ton trucks of not-too-long-ago, and while the 3500s get leaf springs in the rear and are noticeably harsher, they’re still surprisingly comfortable given their ability to haul up to 7,680 pounds in the bed.
Last year’s 5.7-liter gasoline V-8 has been dropped; the base engine is now the 6.4-liter gas V-8, which returns with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque and a new eight-speed automatic. But it was the Cummins turbo-diesel that put Ram HDs on the map, and it’s been extensively updated. The 6.7-liter straight-six now makes 370 horses and 850 lb-ft in standard trim, and—warning, headline material ahead—400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque in high-output form. Currently, the Chevy tops out at 910 lb-ft and the Ford at 935. For perspective, the base engine in a new Peterbilt 579 semi makes 1,150 lb-ft. Both versions of the diesel get six-speed automatics, but while the standard-output engine gets a beefed-up Chrysler transmission, the high-output version gets an Aisin unit.
Cummins did a lot of work on the engine to facilitate the upgrades, including a new compacted graphite iron (CGI) block, a redesigned cylinder head, a new turbocharger, and a 2,900-psi fuel system. The strength of the CGI block allowed many of the nonstructural components to be switched from iron to aluminum, and as a result the new engine is 60 pounds lighter. FCA engineers had to increase the size of the cooling system, and were rather pleased that they were able to do it without altering the Ram’s signature styling.
The Part Where We Drive
We started our drive in a 3500 regular-cab Big Horn, one step up from the entry-level Tradesman, with a V-8 engine up front and a 1,500-ish-pound load in the bed. With an interior done up in black plastic, the truck was all about function over form, but we were impressed by the simplicity of the layout and the quality of even those basic materials, which is more than we can say for Ram trucks of just a few years back. Big mirrors and a commendable lack of bulges on the hood make the big Ram as easy to drive as a half-ton.
Our second truck, a 2500 Limited crew-cab with the stoutest diesel, was a real cowboy Cadillac, awash in leather and wood and featuring the massive 12.0-inch vertical infotainment screen. We’re not totally convinced about the latter—we prefer real buttons for the climate controls versus a touch-screen, though perhaps owners will grow familiar and won’t mind. Only the column shifter, an unbending affair that looks as if it were made from a piece of bar-stock steel, stood out as slightly awkward. But the overwhelming impression was that it’s a lovely truck to drive, with a comfortable ride, a dearth of engine and road noise, and power, power, power.
Naturally, we towed a trailer—a 30-something-foot fifth-wheel palace for horses and people. In terms of towing and hauling technology, Ram offers a comprehensive camera package, including a wiring harness for a remote camera that can be mounted on the back of (or inside) your trailer. The trucks also have an automatic emergency braking system which can trigger the trailer brakes or be disabled if you’re towing horses. We were more impressed by Smart Brake, a feature that’s been on Ram HDs for some time. Put the exhaust brake in Smart mode, take your foot off the accelerator, and it will use the transmission and exhaust brake to maintain the same speed as you cruise downhill. Very cool—and very safe.
We also did some off-roading in the new Power Wagon, the 2500-based macho version of the Ram HD, which benefits from the new eight-speed automatic that gives it a 50:1 crawl ratio. The built-in winch (which precludes the Wagon from getting the diesel engine) now uses a synthetic cable in place of steel, saving 28 pounds. We hit some pretty intense trails in Hungry Valley, one of which required some help from the winch (with another Power Wagon as the anchor point). Suffice it to say that it’s a great off-roader on trails big enough to accommodate a truck its size—and anything the Power Wagon can’t fit through, it can probably knock over.
As for pricing, the cheapest HD, a 2500 4×2 regular-cab Tradesman, starts at $35,090, including the $1,695 destination fee. 3500s start at $36,540. Power Wagons begin at $54,595 and Mega Cabs at $48,195. The most expensive model, a 3500 4×4 Limited with the Mega Cab, starts at $68,745. Want a diesel? You’ll pay $9,100 extra for the standard-output version and $11,795 for the beefier one. Other option costs have not yet been announced, but based on the current truck, we could be looking at Ram trucks closing in on—and maybe passing—$100,000.
As sure as the sun will cross the sky, truck fans will spend thousands of hours bragging and debating the various capacities of different rigs. The Ram HD may or may not be the most capable on the market at any given moment, but it’s clear to us that it’s the nicest and easiest-to-live-with heavy-duty truck on the market—and we don’t see that changing any time soon.

2019 Ram Heavy Duty Priced Starting at $35,090
When Ram announced its new Heavy Duty pickup trucks, the biggest news was the fact that you could add an all-new 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel good for 400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Now we know how much it will cost to get your hands on the burly Rams.
It will take $35,090 to get behind the wheel of a base-model 2500 Tradesman regular cab 4×2. If you want the 4×4 model, plan on spending another $2,900. Upgrading from the gasoline V-8 to the diesel inline-six adds a whopping $9,100.
To get the 1,000-lb-ft version of that diesel engine, though, you’ll have to spring for the Ram 3500. That truck starts at $36,540 for the base 4×2 and $39,340 if you want four-wheel drive. Adding the high-output diesel will then add cost an extra $11,795. At the top of the range, the 2500 4×4 Mega Cab Limited $67,395, with the 3500 version costing $68,745. Equip the 3500 4×4 Mega Cab Limited with the high-output diesel, and that brings the total up to $80,540 before options.

When Ram announced its new Heavy Duty pickup trucks, the biggest news was the fact that you could add an all-new 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel good for 400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Now we know how much it will cost to get your hands on the burly Rams.
It will take $35,090 to get behind the wheel of a base-model 2500 Tradesman regular cab 4×2. If you want the 4×4 model, plan on spending another $2,900. Upgrading from the gasoline V-8 to the diesel inline-six adds a whopping $9,100.
To get the 1,000-lb-ft version of that diesel engine, though, you’ll have to spring for the Ram 3500. That truck starts at $36,540 for the base 4×2 and $39,340 if you want four-wheel drive. Adding the high-output diesel will then add cost an extra $11,795. At the top of the range, the 2500 4×4 Mega Cab Limited $67,395, with the 3500 version costing $68,745. Equip the 3500 4×4 Mega Cab Limited with the high-output diesel, and that brings the total up to $80,540 before options.

Specs Check: 2019 Ram HD vs. 2020 GMC Sierra HD vs. 2019 Ford Super Duty
Given that torque figures on American heavy-duty trucks have steadily crept upward over the past few years, it was only a matter of time before someone hit that big four-digit mark. Ram was the first to cross that threshold with its 2019 Ram HD unveiled at the 2019 Detroit auto show with 1,000 lb-ft of torque. The 2020 GMC Sierra HD was also just revealed, and its top engine makes more horsepower but less torque than the Ram. However, it takes more than just torque numbers to win over heavy-duty truck buyers. Below, we compare specs of Ram’s redesigned HD truck against the competition from GM and Ford. Let’s see what the numbers say.
Power
The 2019 Ram 3500 HD’s class-leading 1,000 lb-ft is specific to the high-output version, which also makes 400 hp and comes backed by a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The standard version of Ram’s updated Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel I-6 pumps out 370 hp and 850 lb-ft. For 2020, GM’s Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 will continue to make 910 lb-ft but will use a new Allison 10-speed automatic. Although full specs haven’t been revealed yet, the Duramax in the 2020 Silverado HD will likely make the same 445 hp as the Sierra HD. Ford will be refreshing its Super Duty lineup for 2020 and will probably increase power, but if not, the 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8 will continue to churn out 450 hp and 935 lb-ft. The current TorqShift six-speed automatic is expected to be replaced by a 10-speed unit.
If oil-burners aren’t for you, each automaker offers a gasoline option. The Ram’s 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 makes 410 hp and 429 lb-ft. GM will introduce an all-new gas engine, possibly a Navistar-sourced 6.6-liter V-8, which should eclipse the 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of the current 6.0-liter Vortec V-8. The Super Duty’s 6.2-liter V-8 produces 430 lb-ft, and horsepower is rated at 385. A power bump could happen if the engine is updated for 2020.
Towing and Hauling
That 1,000 lb-ft of twist is not just for show, as the 2019 Ram HD claims a class-leading maximum towing capacity of 35,100 pounds with a gooseneck or fifth wheel. Although “class-leading” is technically true, it just barely beats the Super Duty’s 35,000-pound maximum rating. Towing figures for the 2020 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD have yet to be released, but GM claims the maximum capacity will be “well in excess of 30,000 pounds.” When it comes to hauling, the Ram HD can carry a maximum payload of 7,680 pounds in its bed, a smidge more than Ford’s rating of 7,640 pounds. Currently, the Silverado’s max is 7,153 pounds (6,112 for the Sierra), but expect an improvement for 2020. Interestingly, those max payload numbers all apply to gas-engine variants. (The heavier diesel engines lower each rating slightly.)
The EPA doesn’t rate heavy-duty trucks for their fuel economy, but the size of the fuel tank will give you an idea of each truck’s driving range. The Ford Super Duty’s fuel tank capacity depends on the engine and configuration. The Power Stroke’s tank ranges from 29 gallons in the shortest wheelbase to 34 gallons for the mid-wheelbase models and 48 gallons in the model with the longest wheelbase (crew cab with the long bed). The gas engine’s tank is either 34 gallons for the regular and super cabs or 48 gallons for the crew cab.
The 2019 Ram HD gets a 28-gallon tank standard in regular-cab diesel trim or a 31-gallon tank in crew-cab and Mega Cab configurations with the 6-foot, 4-inch bed. Regular-cab and crew-cab models with the 8-foot box get a 32-gallon tank standard. All of GM’s current HD trucks have a 36-gallon tank, regardless of engine and body configuration, though that could change for the 2020 models. Interestingly, those max payload numbers all apply to gas-engine variants (the heavier diesel engines lower each rating slightly).
Bed Dimensions
We know how much weight these trucks can haul in the bed, but how much stuff can you fit in them? The Ram HD’s standard bed is 76.3 inches long and can hold 57.5 cubic feet of cargo. The long bed measures 98.3 inches long and has a volume of 74.7 cubic feet. Both beds have 51 inches between wheelhouses. GM’s standard bed on the outgoing HD truck is 78.9 inches in length, and the cargo volume is 61 cubic feet. Long-bed length is 97.8 inches, and cargo volume is 76.3 cubic feet. Width between wheelhouses is also 51.0 inches. Bed dimensions for the 2020 models have not been released yet, but GMC promises “class-leading heavy-duty cargo bed volume” in the Sierra HD.
The Super Duty’s standard bed is the largest at 81.9 inches long with a cargo volume of 65.4 cubic feet. Its long bed is just shy of the Ram’s at 98.1 inches long, but cargo volume is the largest at 78.5 cubic feet. Both beds have 50.5 inches between wheelhouses.
Acceleration
It’s almost impossible to say which HD lineup is the quickest with the various body, bed, axle ratio, and engine configurations offered. But to give you an idea, here are three that we tested. Our former long-term 2017 Ford F-250 King Ranch diesel 4×4 hit 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and completed the quarter mile in 15.5 seconds at 89 mph. The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Z71 diesel 4×4 made it to 60 in 6.5 seconds, on its way to a quarter-mile time of 15 seconds at 91.8 mph. We didn’t get our hands on a 2500 diesel model, but the previous-gen 2016 Ram 3500 Limited diesel 4X4 clocked a 0–60 time of 8.6 seconds and ran the quarter mile in 16.6 seconds at 84.0 mph. But expect the new Ram’s numbers to improve with the added power (our tester had 385 hp and 900 lb-ft).

Twist and Stout: The 2019 Ram HD Has 1,000 LB-FT of Torque
Got torque? Sure, you do. But how about 1,000 pound-feet of it? The 2019 Ram Heavy Duty offers three engine options to meet various needs, but the headliner is the all-new 6.7-liter inline-six Cummins diesel with 400 horsepower and that massive, massive pile of twist. It’s mated to an Aisin six-speed automatic because, well it can handle the torque.
There’s also a lower-output version of the Cummins six with 370 horses and 850 lb-ft; it hooks to an eight-speed automatic as standard, or can be upgraded to the sixer. The final available engine is the standard 6.4-liter Hemi V-8; it’s good for 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque and uses the eight-speed automatic exclusively. Whichever gearbox is underneath, the Ram Heavy Duty employs the familiar shift-by-wire rotary gear-selection dial instead of a console or column-mounted shifter. Four-wheel-drive versions of the Ram 2500 and 3500 HDs use a BorgWarner part-time transfer case; buyers can opt for electronic or manual control. The front and rear axles are new with larger half-shafts, and include a 12-inch ring gear on the max-tow unit.
Ram claims that 4×4 dually 3500s with the high-output Cummins and 4.10 axle ratio can tow up to 35,100 pounds, and that 4×2 3500s can haul up to 7,680 pounds of payload. The heavily revised—Ram calls it all-new—and fully boxed frame now contains 98.5 percent steel, and the trucks are said to shed up to 143 pounds thanks to increased use of high-strength steel, as well as lightweighting measures used on the chassis, bumpers, and powertrain. To that end, the Cummins now uses a compact-graphite-iron block, while it also gets higher-strength internals, revised pistons and head, new injectors and high-pressure fuel pumps, and improved exhaust-brake performance.
Trims—in order of opulence and price—include the Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited. There’s also a new Power Wagon off-road special with Bilstein dampers, a factory winch with a synthetic cable that’s 28 pounds lighter than before, an upgraded eight-speed automatic, a removable front air dam, and a special off-road camera view for navigating trails. New sensors on dually models aim to help owners better navigate those trucks’ prodigious widths.
The styling is familiar overall—Ram tells us that it focused on the interior and capability rather than making a departure from the previous truck—but there are six new massive grille designs with active shutters based on trim. As you move up the model hierarchy, the headlamps are halogen, LED, or full LED/projector.
Ram is claiming increased refinement for its workhorses, too, with new body mounts that reduce torsional loads on the cab and help reduce idle shake. The suspension has variable-rate springs and dampers at all four corners to deliver better handling and a smoother ride when unladen. Air-suspension-equipped trucks offer active load leveling as well as a new bed-lowering mode to make trailer hook-ups easier. The weatherproof, lockable, illuminated, and drainable RamBox storage bins built into the bedsides now tout a 115-volt outlet.
The interior has been completely remade in a design theme echoing that of the 1500 models, and features high-quality plastics and materials throughout—the Limited and Laramies are particularly impressive, more the stuff of luxury cars than big-boy pickups. There’s a new instrument panel—fully digital in higher-spec trucks, including specific themes based on trim—push-button start, an available tablet-style 12.0-inch Uconnect navigation touchscreen, an active noise-cancelling system, and acoustic glass for a quieter experience. The expansive Mega Cab offers he rear legroom and up to 9.1 cubic feet of storage space that includes two bins behind the rear seats. In all models, there’s enough space inside the center-console bin to stash a 15-inch laptop. The new Ram HD also features five USB ports and up to three 115-volt plugs. The latter outlets can handle up to 400 watts to charge or power tools. Safety features run from automatic emergency braking that will also activate the trailer brakes to a 360-degree camera, and four audio systems are on offer, topped by a 750-watt, 17-speaker Harman/Kardon system.
The Mexico-built 2019 Ram Heavy Duty will be priced closer to its on-sale date this April.

Twist and Stout: The 2019 Ram HD Has 1,000 LB-FT of Torque
Got torque? Sure, you do. But how about 1,000 pound-feet of it? The 2019 Ram Heavy Duty offers three engine options to meet various needs, but the headliner is the all-new 6.7-liter inline-six Cummins diesel with 400 horsepower and that massive, massive pile of twist. It’s mated to an Aisin six-speed automatic because, well it can handle the torque.
There’s also a lower-output version of the Cummins six with 370 horses and 850 lb-ft; it hooks to an eight-speed automatic as standard, or can be upgraded to the sixer. The final available engine is the standard 6.4-liter Hemi V-8; it’s good for 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque and uses the eight-speed automatic exclusively. Whichever gearbox is underneath, the Ram Heavy Duty employs the familiar shift-by-wire rotary gear-selection dial instead of a console or column-mounted shifter. Four-wheel-drive versions of the Ram 2500 and 3500 HDs use a BorgWarner part-time transfer case; buyers can opt for electronic or manual control. The front and rear axles are new with larger half-shafts, and include a 12-inch ring gear on the max-tow unit.
Ram claims that 4×4 dually 3500s with the high-output Cummins and 4.10 axle ratio can tow up to 35,100 pounds, and that 4×2 3500s can haul up to 7,680 pounds of payload. The heavily revised—Ram calls it all-new—and fully boxed frame now contains 98.5 percent steel, and the trucks are said to shed up to 143 pounds thanks to increased use of high-strength steel, as well as lightweighting measures used on the chassis, bumpers, and powertrain. To that end, the Cummins now uses a compact-graphite-iron block, while it also gets higher-strength internals, revised pistons and head, new injectors and high-pressure fuel pumps, and improved exhaust-brake performance.
Trims—in order of opulence and price—include the Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited. There’s also a new Power Wagon off-road special with Bilstein dampers, a factory winch with a synthetic cable that’s 28 pounds lighter than before, an upgraded eight-speed automatic, a removable front air dam, and a special off-road camera view for navigating trails. New sensors on dually models aim to help owners better navigate those trucks’ prodigious widths.
The styling is familiar overall—Ram tells us that it focused on the interior and capability rather than making a departure from the previous truck—but there are six new massive grille designs with active shutters based on trim. As you move up the model hierarchy, the headlamps are halogen, LED, or full LED/projector.
Ram is claiming increased refinement for its workhorses, too, with new body mounts that reduce torsional loads on the cab and help reduce idle shake. The suspension has variable-rate springs and dampers at all four corners to deliver better handling and a smoother ride when unladen. Air-suspension-equipped trucks offer active load leveling as well as a new bed-lowering mode to make trailer hook-ups easier. The weatherproof, lockable, illuminated, and drainable RamBox storage bins built into the bedsides now tout a 115-volt outlet.
The interior has been completely remade in a design theme echoing that of the 1500 models, and features high-quality plastics and materials throughout—the Limited and Laramies are particularly impressive, more the stuff of luxury cars than big-boy pickups. There’s a new instrument panel—fully digital in higher-spec trucks, including specific themes based on trim—push-button start, an available tablet-style 12.0-inch Uconnect navigation touchscreen, an active noise-cancelling system, and acoustic glass for a quieter experience. The expansive Mega Cab offers he rear legroom and up to 9.1 cubic feet of storage space that includes two bins behind the rear seats. In all models, there’s enough space inside the center-console bin to stash a 15-inch laptop. The new Ram HD also features five USB ports and up to three 115-volt plugs. The latter outlets can handle up to 400 watts to charge or power tools. Safety features run from automatic emergency braking that will also activate the trailer brakes to a 360-degree camera, and four audio systems are on offer, topped by a 750-watt, 17-speaker Harman/Kardon system.
The Mexico-built 2019 Ram Heavy Duty will be priced closer to its on-sale date this April.
